LOST CIRCULATION:
The PBL M ulti-A ctivation Bypass System is an effective tool to com bat lost circulation
problem s. W ith the tool run as low in the BH A as possible it can be opened
(activated) by sim ply dropping a ball. W hen the tool opens operators are not lim ited
in the size or concentration of LCM they can pum p. The lim itations rest w ith the surface
equipm ent. O nce circulation is regained the tool can now be closed. Sim ply drop
a steel ball or balls to close the tool and drill ahead. If the problem is encountered
again the PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass System can be closed (de-activated)
dow nhole as the tool can be opened and closed up to six tim es a bit run.
In addition to loss circulation control the PBL M ulti-A ctivation Bypass System can
deal w ith num erous other dow nhole applications including horizontal drilling
hole cleaning, w orkovers and com pletions. The tool offers other apparent
cost/tim e saving advantages and enhancem ents.
INCREASING FLOWRATESBEYONDCRITICALLIMITS:
A ll direction D rilling tools have critical lim its that operators m ust not exceed. The
lim its set on directional tools by m anufacturers often restrict operators from
achieving preferred circulating rates for effective hole cleaning. The PBL
M ulti-A ctivation Bypass system is useful in increasing circulation rates 4 tim es that
of rates allow ed through directional tools by m anufacturers. C irculate at 4 tim es
the critical lim it through the PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass System .
WORKOVERS & COMPLETIONS:
C irculating rate and pressure loss application, this application proved very effective
for operators w orking in w ells w ith liners on bottom . The PBL tool is utilised to
bypass sm all w orking strings inside liners. W ith the tool positioned directly above
the slim hole string in the liner it can be opened to bypass the friction loss
associated w ith the slim hole w orking string. Increased flow rates can be as high
as five tim es that of the rate achieved w hile circulating through the slim hole
string. The Bypass system allow s operators to rotate and reciprocate during the
displacem ent operation. This w ill greatly help to reduce casing, erosion or w ashing.
HORIZONTAL ACIDISING & STIMULATION:
In m ultilateral horizontal w ells it is necessary to find the lateral leg w hich requires
stim ulation. For this reason it is necessary to run expensive M W D Tools. W ith the
PBL tool run directly above the M W D tool, stim ulation can be achieved w ith no
adverse effects on the M W D tool. A ll acid can be pum ped through the PBL Tool
and the PBL Tool can be opened and closed so that the operator can regain
signals from the M W D Tool.
HORIZONTAL DRILLING:
W ith increased activity and dem and for horizontal drilling it becam e apparent
that there w ere yet m ore applications for the tool in this specialised area. O ne of
the m ore interesting applications is using the tool to break circulation w hile
running in the hole w ith dow nhole m otors.
This application allow s operators to break circulation through the PBL Bypass
System w hen running in the hole. This is an advantage w hen running m otors
w ith bent housings and PD C bits. This application elim inates m otor and bit
rotation preventing bit w ear and tear as w ell as casing w ear. W ith the BH A on
bottom the Bypass System can be closed to com m ence w ith drilling. This is very
effective for TTRD operations.
These three applications for the PBL M ulti-Functional Bypass System have proven
effective to operators in som e of the m ost extrem e environm ents w orldw ide.

UNDER BALANCED DRILLING
The tool can be used for this application, m ost com m only the tool is run in the vertical
section of the w ell. The tool is used so that the zone of interest is not exposed to
contam inated fluid. The tool can be opened up to allow the displacem ent of
w eighted m aterial in the vertical part of the w ell bore for safer tripping of the pipe
or for w ell control operations. For this application the ball catcher can be run dow n
the string just above the M W D or non-m ag tools, this w ill allow free point and
back off operations to be perform ed as low in the hole as possible
FIXED CUTTER/BI-CENTRE BITS OR REAM WHILE DRILLING TOOL
(RWD) APPLICATIONS.
W hen these above m entioned tools are run in conjunction w ith dow n hole
m otors som e operational problem s can be elim inated w ith the use of the PBL
M ulti-A ctivation Bypass System . Pum ping through drilling m otors w ith the above
m entioned tools is not recom m end w hile inside casing or tubing. In m ost cases it
is not recom m ended to turn these bits inside the casing/tubing w ith the drilling
m otors as this can dam age the bit, the casing or the tubing. The PBL M ultiple
A ctivation Bypass System can solve this problem as follow s:
Before running in the hole:
W ith one of the above m entioned assem blies, put the vinyl activation ball, preferably
w ith a dart com bination into the PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass System . W ith the
ball in place in the tool circulation can be achieved w hen desired w ith the flow
going out of the PBL Bypass System and not through the m otor or M W D . W hen
the drill string enters the open hole the PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass System
can be deactivated to allow for circulation through the M W D and m otor.
SUB SEA RISER/BOP JETTING
The PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass System can be utilised to jet BO P's and risers
during drilling and com pletion operations. The jetting application can be
perform ed by opening and closing the PBL Bypass System w ithout the need for
tripping jetting tools in and out of the hole.
Jetting your sub sea BO Ps w ill clean shale and debris out of the cavities in the sub
sea BO P stack greatly enhancing safety. Jetting the riser w ill effectively clean the
riser during drilling and com pletion operations.
U tilising the PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass System for jetting sub sea BO P's and
risers w ill greatly reduce rig tim e. By having the tool as a com ponent of the BH A ,
this jetting operation can be perform ed during each trip as and w hen required.

w ell bore clean out during TTRD and slim hole restricted flow rate situations.
The PBL Bypass System w ill elim inate turning the bits inside the tubing string
w hen RIH or PO O H .
D ual ported tools w ith increased TFA are recom m ended to enhance flow rates.
Tools can be m anufactured to suit all required specifications.
CORING APPLICATIONS:
A fter core cut increase flow rates and reduce core disturbance w hilst circulating
or pum ping out of the hole.
Elim inate w et trips if core jam m ed or corebit/corebarrel packed off.
Enhance w ell control capabilities.

C) ACTIVATION PROCEDURE:
Before activating the tool check and m ake note of pum p pressure/stroke. This w ill
be referred to upon de-activation of the tool to confirm de-activation.
Break the drill string at the floor and drop the vinyl ball ( NEVER RE-RUN PBL
ACTIVATION BALLS) . The vinyl ball can be displaced at a high flow rate for 50% -
70% displacem ent volum e. If ball/dart com bination is used, displace at a high
flow rate for no m ore than 50% of drill string volum e. The tim e it takes to pum p
the vinyl ball dow n and seat and open the tool w ill be affected by the fluid
characteristics and volum e. Extreme care to be taken when pumping or
landing the vinyl ball into the tool. D o not seat the activation ball at high
fluid rates or pressures as this could cause the vinyl ball to be blow n through the
seat and w ill result in the procedure having to be repeated. If this happens, drop
the steel de-activation ball(s) to ensure the vinyl ball has blow n through the seat
prior to dropping another vinyl ball.
The vinyl ball w ill alm ost alw ays seat sooner than calculated pum p strokes due to the
gravity and fluid characteristics, so be careful w hen pum ping dow n the vinyl ball.
If the drill string is plugged there is an em ergency Ball/D art com bination that can be
used to activate the tool. This m ust be dropped D A RTend first. This Ball/D art can
be used if flow rates are greatly restricted or the drill string is becom ing plugged. The
w eighted dart w ill help to get the lighter activation ball to the tool w ithout flow .
W hen the vinyl activation ball hits the seat, the inner m andrel w ill drop to its open
position and the m ud w ill be diverted through the side port(s). The PBL Bypass
System requires 100-150psi to activate and open the port(s).
Surface indication that the tool has opened is a pressure drop. O nce the tool is
open, the pum ps can be increased to desired rates.
W e recom m end that a constant pum p rate be m aintained w hile the tool is opened.

CIRCULATING RATELIMITATIONS
W ith the PBL A ctivated the circulating rate lim itations depends on the Ball
shearing pressure setting. The pressure drops across the port or ports acts on the
A ctivation Ball. This pressure drop w ill increase w hen port or ports becom e
restricted. Som e situation that could cause port/ports to becom e restricted.
D ebris A nnuals in the directional horizontal w ells the ports on the low side of
casing or open hole can becom e restricted causing the pressure drop to increase.
D ual Ported Tools are recom m ended to m inim ize the pressure drop on restrictions
across the port or ports. The port or ports are large on PBL Bypass System so in
m ost cases the C irculating Volum e does not create a pressure drop even close to
the Ball shearing pressure setting on Tool. In m ost cases it is recom m ended to
m aintain the pressure drop across the port or ports 1000psi below the preset ball
shearing pressure.
EXA M PLE:
Ball shearing pressure = 4000psi
M axim um operating pressure = 3000psi

9
D) DE-ACTIVATION PROCEDURE
Break the drill string at rig floor and drop appropriate steel deactivation ball(s)
and pum p at drilling rate or higher. W hen steel balls reach the PBL tool they w ill
cut off flow through the ports creating a pressure increase. It is preferred, w hen
the steel ball lands in the tool to increase pum p rate and achieve preset ball
shearing pressure as quickly as possible, this w ill reduce the w ashing effect of the
m ud on the ball and port.
The vinyl activation ball w ill blow through the seat at the preset ball shearing
pressure and be caught in the ball catcher sub/sleeve. (Ball Shearing Pressure can
be set to O perators preference).
The piston w ill then m ove up closing the circulating ports and causing the steel
balls to drop in the ball catcher sub/sleeve. C irculation w ill then be through the
bottom hole assem bly. Pum p rates i.e. strokes/pressure w ill be the sam e as before
the PBL Bypass tool w as activated.
E) RECOMMENDATIONS
Never re-run PBL Activation Balls as they becom e dam aged through the
de-activation process. A fter retrieving balls from the ball catcher cage, the vinyl
activation ball(s) should be discarded im m ediately. W ith regards to Acidizing -
only use High Temp PBL Activation balls during acidizing process.
It is im perative that w hen you drop a vinyl ball to activate the tool that you follow
it w ith a steel ball(s) to de-activate the tool. It is im portant that this sequence is
carried out at all tim es to insure that the tool operates correctly.
W e recom m end that once the tool is below the rig floor, that you function test the
tool at this point to ensure the tool is w orking before running in the hole.
This w ill also acquaint personnel w ith the operation of the tool. There w ill be no
charge for this vinyl ball if this procedure is follow ed. The PBLtool must be pulled
and balls removed out of the ball catcher sub before running in the hole.
F) EFFECTS OF HIGH TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES ON BALL SHEARING
AND BALLS
W ith continuous operation of PBLs w orldw ide, our experience has show n that in
high tem peratures and high pressures the density of the vinyl balls is slightly
affected causing ball shearing pressure to be decreased by 200-400 psi.
Standard tem perature balls service tem perature is 340F (171C )
High tem perature balls, m ay be included upon request, w hich w ithstand 450
o
F (232C).
H ot hole balls are indicated by colour coding (D ark m etallic w ith a yellow ring
around the circum ference of the ball).

G) EFFECTS OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS ON SEALS
PBL M ultiple Activation Bypass Tools are dressed standard for Hot Hole Service (450F / 232C)
H) Q.A. ON OPERATION BALLS
All operating balls are m easured using a m icrom eter, to see if w ithin specifications.
I) INTERNAL DRIFT
The drift is the sm allest inside diam eter of the tool and w hen the tool has been
activated and deactivated and there are balls in the ball catcher cage the drift is
elim inated. That is w hy w e recom m ended running the tool as low in the BH A as
possible.
J) BALL DART COMBINATION
Note: Must be inserted dart end down
The use of the ball dart com bination is recom m ended for the follow ing situations.
1) If the drill string or annulus becom es plugged or packed off it w ill be hard to
get the standard activation ball to the tool to activate (open) it. The ball/dart
com bination w ill add density to the ball to help the vinyl activation ball get to
the tool faster. W ith the tool activated it m ay be possible to break circulation
through the tool and clean up the annulus. W ith the annulus clean the tool
can be deactivated to allow the operator to continue drilling ahead. If the bit
is plugged it w ill allow the operator to circulate.
2) In situations w here high m ud w eights are used the ball dart com bination w ill
help to speed up the activation process.
3) In the past, PBL Bypass System s w ere sent out w ith an em ergency steel ball
the sam e size as the vinyl activation balls. This em ergency ball w as to be used if
the drill string becam e plugged. It w ould m igrate dow n the string to the tool
through any m ud w eights even w ithout circulation to activate the tool. The
ball/dart com bination w ill do the sam e, although if desired, the ball/dart
com bination can be blow n through the tool deactivating (closing) it.

K) SURVEY BARRELRECOMMENDATIONS
The PBL M ultiple Activation Bypass System is com patible w ith Survey Barrels. It is recom m ended to land the
Survey Barrel on the Ball C atcher Sleeve in the tool 6 1/4and larger and on the Top Sub ID in the
4 3/4tools and sm aller. O n the larger tools if there are balls in the Ball C atcher Sleeve the Survey
Barrel w ill land on top of the Balls. The ID going through the Ball seat on 6 1/4- 6 3/4tools is
1 7/8. So betw een 1 3/4and 1 3/8Survey Barrel should be used. The 4 3/4tools have an ID of
1.520on the Top Sub so any Survey Barrel larger than this w ill be com patible. It is recom m ended
to check the Survey Barrel in PBL Bypass Bypass tool to confirm com patibility.
W ith regards to D irectional Surveys som e m odification can be m ade to m ake the PBL
Bypass tool com patible w ith m ule shoe / orienting Sub System s. To m ake 4 3/4PBL tools
com patible, the orienting Sub can be run above the PBL Bypass tool. The ID of the
orienting Sub Sleeve w ill have to be opened up so a 1.500Ball can pass. This has proven effective
in the past. W ith regard to 6 1/4- 6 3/4PBL Bypass Tools, D SI can provide a larger m ule shoe
and orienting Sub Sleeve to fit in the top of the PBL Bypass tool. This w ill allow the 2
Vinyl Balls to pass through the orienting Sub Sleeve in the top of the PBL Bypass Tool. The
O D of the m ule shoe provided by PBL is 2 3/8.
L) DRILLSTRINGPLACEMENT
For drilling, it is recom m ended to run the PBL M ultiple Activation Bypass System as low in the hole as possible
i.e. Just above non-m agnetic com ponents in directional situations and just above the Bit Sub in
conventional vertical D rilling. This w ill allow operators to free point and back off as w ell as Survey
as low in the hole as possible.
M)FORCOMPLETIONS
Run the PBL M ultiple A ctivation Bypass tool at the crossover of the tapered w orking string. D uring
com pletions, operators are w orking in cased hole so free point and back off is not necessary as the
likelihood of becom ing stuck in the hole is very rem ote.

PBL Multiple Activation Autolock Bypass System
(Ball Lock Series)
Additional Features of the
PBL MULTIPLE ACTIVATION AUTOLOCK BYPASS SYSTEM
I. INTRODUCTION
The PBL Bypass System has provided a sim ple and reliable solution to various drilling problem s,
including lost circulation. The new PBL Autolock M ultiple Activation Bypass System w as developed at the
request of the operators to allow for safer and tim elier tripping. By locking the tool in the open posi-
tion, the drill string can easily drain and fill during tripping operations. This new PBL Bypass System
allow s operators the ability to open and close the tool dow n hole up to 5 tim es to assist in dealing
w ith hole conditions. This new system is safe, reliable and effective.
APPLICATION DETAILS
a. Trip Dry Pipe: W hen the PBL Autolock tool is in the activated position by dropping the Locking Ball
the tool w ill lock open. This is confirm ed on surface, as the Plastic Locking Ball
w ill cut the TFA in half, so surface indication is clear. W ith the Locking Ball
Seated there is 1 x 1 1/8or 1 3/8full opening port to drain the pipe.
Pulling dry pipe w ith Lighter W eighted pills w ill be realized.
b. Fill pipe: Running in the hole w ith the PBL A utolock Bypass System w ill elim inate
costly tim e filling the pipe. W hen it is desired to close the tool, drop tw o
Steel D eactivation Balls and close the tool.
c. Equalize & Ifdifferential sticking occurs the PBL A utolock Bypass tool can be opened to
Reverse allow lighter fluid to be pum ped dow n the annulus until the pipe com es free.
Circulate: W ith the pipe com ing free conventional circulation can be resum ed to
displace the lighter fluid out of the hole and out of the system .
d. Equalize & Reverse Utilize the PBL Autolock tool to reverse fluids during displacem ent operations to
Circulation for achieve m axim um annular velocities to clean the w ell bore. Resum e conventional
effective circulation at any tim e as w ell as open and close the tool 5 tim es w hile
completions in hole.
e. To Shock the Pipe: By locking the PBL A utolock tool open and dropping one Steel
D eactivation Ball, the system w ill pressure up and shear the plastic locking
Ball. This has the effect of shocking the pipe. The debris falling off of the
ID of the pipe w ill exit out the Port in the PBL A utolock Bypass System , this
w ill elim inate debris from contam inating the BH A . D rop the second Steel
D eactivation Ball to reset tool and resum e drilling.

II. LOCKING TOOL FOR HYDRAULIC RESET
For locking tool open, a Plastic Locking Ball is used. U sing this procedure, w ill allow operators to lock
the tool open and open or close the tool dow n hole anytim e.
D rop Vinyl A ctivation Ball/D art pum p 50% to 70% of pipe volum e ports w ill open, pressure w ill drop
indicating the tool is open. To lock the tool open, drop Plastic Locking Ball. Pum p the locking Ball to
the tool @ 50% of drilling rate w hen the pressure decreases, the A ctivation Ball has opened the tool.
W hen the pressure increases the Locking Ballhas seated in the nozzle, the tool is now locked
open. W hen the circulation stops the tool w ill rem ain locked open w ith the Plastic Locking Ball
holding the sleeve open. To close the tool drop tw o Steel D eactivation Balls, the Locking Ball w ill
shear through the nozzle and the tw o Steel Balls w ill restrict the flow out of the ports. The system
w ill pressure up and the Vinyl A ctivation Ball w ill shear and the tool w ill close. The Steel Balls w ill
end up in the Ball C atcher Sleeve w ith the activation Ball. W ith the ports closed drilling can resum e.
This procedure can be perform ed on below the rotary table or in the hole at any tim e. This
procedure is also used to surface reset tool after tripping in locked open position.
III.WELL CONTROL CONSIDERATION
W hen the PBL A utolock Bypass tool is locked open there is com m unication betw een the
annulus and the ID of the drill string. Flapper valves can be run above the PBL A utolock tool to
elim inate influx through the port and into the drill string. Standard flappers can be provided that w ill
drift up to 2vinyl activation balls. M odified flappers can be provided to drift 2 1/2vinyl activation
balls. If flappers are not used above the PBL A utolock tool drill crew s should be briefed on
stabbing value and w ell control procedures.

As testament to the success of our products, over the years, some of our clients have stated:
The multi-open/close feature of the PBL sub with the ability to rotate pipe has allowed us to now
effectively and cost efficiently clean up our wells. In fact I would say I had not been able to attribute any
Non Productive Time on the completion side to pipe dope or drilled solids for the last three or four wells.
Ian Frizell, rig superintendent Eider, North Cormorant and Cormorant Alpha.
We have been using the PBL tools extensively on BP Forties operations for the past 18 months we have
found them to be a very reliable tool no matter how many times they have been cycled during drilling or
workover operations. The tool provides us with a very effective means of achieving enhanced flow rates
when required.
Drew Liel, drilling superintendent, Noble Drilling.
Petroleum Development Oman have been using the PBL subs with success for the last 24 monthsThe
PBL sub is now a standard component of the drilling BHA in Oman.
Pierre Andre, DES manager, United Engineering Services L.L.C.
The sub has been used primarily for drilling in formations where severe lost circulation is encounteredIt
has proven to be a reliable tool meeting our performance expectations.
L. N. Westermark, manager, Drilling & Completion Services, Imperial Oil / Esso
The main applications are: pumping LCM across loss zones, pumping acid for stuck pipe, increasing flow
rates to clean the 9.5/8 above 7 liner lap with 4.3/4 OD drill string, and displacing well bore fluids during
completion operations. These tools are being used on a regular basis by Occidental Petroleum and
various drilling operators with minimal problems. It is anticipated that these tools will continue to be used
and more frequently as the benefits are fully realised by all concerned.
Phil Woodard, senior directional drilling co-ordinator - Qatar, Sperry-Sun Drilling Services.
Shared Service Drilling (SSD) has utilized the PBL subs with very favourable success as an integral drilling
tool since December of 1996In general terms, the savings attributable to keeping BHA in the hole while
spotting the high concentration LCM pills is near $50,000 per occurrence.SSD has been quite satisfied
with the service provided by PBL Inc. and plan to continue to utilize the specialty subs in the foreseeable
future.
Lames E. Smith, senior drilling engineer, Shared Service Drilling.
No operational problems were experienced in running and/or functioning the tool when requiredBased
on these initial results, the PBL Bypass System would seem to be an effective downhole tool for control
of lost circulation without affecting to any observed degree normal drilling operations.
P. Kapral, drilling supervisor, Mobil Oil Canada Limited.
We have been using the PBL subs for all clean-up operations on the Shell Central Field over the last two
years without a single failure.
Hans de Vries, senior drilling engineer,
Santa Fe Drilling Company (North Sea) Limited.
The wells encountered major lost circulation from 3000 to TD at 5200. The PBL sub allowed drilling with
nozzles in the bit while still being able to spot large amounts of lost circulation materials. In areas where
lost circulation is expected we will continue to use the PBL tool.
S. J ay Milner, P. Eng. Drilling Engineer Chieftain Development Co. Ltd
British Petroleum has been utilizing the "PBL" in our operations in Colombia for the last five years
increasing our flow rates specially in small hole sections, changing mud properties making our transitions
more effective another important application during completion phases we can increase our flow rates
considerably while displacing well bore fluids. We are implementing the utilization of your product in our
future projects, as we are also looking forward to the transition into the Dual Ported Subs, since our initial
test runs showed even more displacement capacities.
