Before we begin with the i 7.1 announcement highlights, lets review the IBM i roadmap. A
major release of i is delivered consistently about every two years. In between major
releases, IBM may deliver interim release as we did with i 6.1.1 which was provided to
support the new POWER7 announcement. While i 7.1 is brand new, work is in progress on
the next major i release which is currently targeted for 2012.

Figure 1-8. DB2 for i: XML support AT961.0
Notes:
In many applications today, business processes and logic are being controlled by data that
is described in XML which is a standard way to describe information that is exchanged
between customers and their suppliers and partners. That data was not immediately
available to DB2 for i. The new enhancements in 7.1 make XML easier to process in DB2
for i by providing an XML data type that allows applications to store XML documents in DB2
and perform standard DB2 operations on those objects. You can also take existing data
stored in DB2 and create an XML document from that data to make it easier to exchange
information with partners using standard interfaces.
This is a strategic replacement for the XML Extenders product.
The OmniFind Text Search Server makes it easy to search XML documents for specific
information within a document such as a customer name. This is a separate product that is
available with IBM i for no additional charge.

Figure 1-9. DB2 for i: Additional enhancements AT961.0
Notes:
In addition to XML enhancements, there are many other DB2 enhancements which will be
discussed in even greater detail in the next presentation. Column Level Encryption is one
of those features which customers and ISVs have asked for. DB2 provides the ability to
encrypt individual columns for security purposes such as credit card numbers, social
security numbers, and so on. We have also partnered with tool providers shown here that
have supplied encryption algorithms which can be used by application providers to take
advantage of this support in their applications.
Additional enhancements for application developers, query performance improvements,
and new support to monitor and manage queries is also provided in this release.

Figure 1-10. DB2 Web Query enhancements AT961.0
Notes:
One of the most successful products on i over the past few years is DB2 Web Query. It gets
enhanced in 7.1 with added security and change management features, improved
performance and more detailed analysis capabilities, and functional enhancements to
improve the development of custom dashboards and get more out of Active Reports.
These enhancements are also rolled back and supported for those users on i 6.1 and 5.4
as well as the new release.
Now that DB2 supports an XML data type in the new release as discussed earlier, DB2
Web Query now supports this data type in i 7.1.
The boxes on the right side of this chart are reminders of why customers should be using
DB2 Web Query if they have been Query/400 users or are using other BI and query
solutions on other platforms.

Figure 1-12. PowerHA SystemMirror for i: IBM 7.1 enhancements AT961.0
Notes:
Here is an overview of the key enhancements to PowerHA for i 7.1.
Asynchronous geographic mirroring allow you to have the primary site and disaster
recovery site to be much further apart than in the past. The new support allows the primary
system to continue processing as data is being mirrored to the DR site without having to
wait for the mirrored operations to complete. In the event of a failure, automatic failover is
provided to the point where the two systems are in synch. Support is provided for
Independent ASPs for any storage type supported on IBM i, integrated, SAN, or virtual
disk. Many usability improvements have also been added to the product in 7.1.
PowerHA can be used as a local solution for two systems in the same data center that are
sharing an independent ASP to store its data. In previous releases, switching and
automatic failover was supported only with integrated disk. Now in i 7.1, switching and
automatic failover can also be done with DS8000 and DS6000 that are attached natively or
through a Virtual I/O Server with NPIV.
More information will be provided in the PowerHA presentation which is covered later in
this class.

Figure 1-26. IBM i integration with BladeCenter and System x enhancements AT961.0
Notes:
We continue to improve the integration between IBM i and BladeCenter/System x which
many of our customers are utilizing to make it easier to manage their x86 environment. In
7.1, the Power System no longer requires a separate iSCSI adapter. This target support
can now be provided via software in IBM i using standard ethernet adapters to connect the
Power System to the BladeCenter or System x. This support provides for both 1 gig and 10
gig ethernet connections. On the BladeCenter or System x side, you have the ability to
connect to either an iSCSI adapter card or the software initiator which has been available
for some time.
i 7.1 will support Windows Server 2008 and 2003 along with version 4.0 of VMWare ESX
and ESXi.
To continue our goal of integration, a new installation wizard has been added to simplify the
configuration and installation of Windows and VMWare operating systems when they
integrated with IBM i via this iSCSI support. This is just another way to simplify and lower
the cost of managing x86 systems.

Figure 1-28. IBM i Storage Management enhancements for SSD AT961.0
Notes:
The storage management architecture of IBM i made it fairly easy to support Solid State
Drives (SSDs) when they became available in 2009. SSDs offer tremendous performance
improvements over spinning drives, but do so at a higher cost. Thus it is important to know
when and where to utilize SSDs to get the best return on that investment. IBM i now makes
this easier by providing a new hierarchical storage management feature which can
automatically collect I/O performance data and move the most used data to the solid state
drives where better performance is desired. Support for SSDs have been integrated with
DB2 for i such that a DB2 file/table can be identified as a candidate to be placed on an
SSD. More statistics are collected which can be used by a new SSD Analyzer Tool to
determine if a system could significantly improve performance by using SSDs. This tool is
also supported on i 5.4 and 6.1 systems. Experience with this technology has shown that
customers can often benefit by replacing a small portion of their traditional disk drives with
SSDs for data that is accessed very frequently.
Here is an example at Associated Bank where going from 72 spinning drives to 60 spinning
drives and 4 SSDs resulted in a 40% reduction in the time it took to complete an important
batch run.

For managing your IBM i system, we introduced Systems Director Navigator in 6.1 and it
gets enhanced in 7.1 with support for managing additional items from a single web
browser. Tape, journal management and BRMS functions which were previously provided
only in the client-based navigator is now also supported in the browser-based navigator in
7.1. Additional performance metrics can be collected for DS800, the latest I/O bus
technology, and other activities. Performance Data Investigator provides a way to view
system and application performance through numerous graphs and tables. It has been
enhanced to include disk response time and Java memory usage graphs.
Systems Director is our multi-platform systems management product and it has also been
enhanced for better management of IBM i 6.1 and 7.1 environments along with other
operating systems. The Systems Director product will be covered in more detail in a future
presentation in this class.

Notes:
As the capabilities of IBM i continue to grow, we also have been receiving new
requirements for ways to install and upgrade systems running i. In 2009, we provided the
ability to install products and fixes to an i 6.1 system from an NFS server. In October 2009,
we announced the capability to upgrade a 6.1 system to 6.1.1 over the network. Now, we
can upgrade i 7.1 from either i 6.1 or i 6.1.1.
Note the future plans which will get us to a brand new installation being made available
over the network.
All function discussed here is available only on POWER6 and later servers due to required
virtualization technologies that are available only on those servers.

Figure 1-31. Application Runtime Expert for i: Statement of direction AT961.0
Notes:
Application Runtime Expert for i is a new program product which is planned to be available
later in 2010 sometime after i 7.1 is released. The purpose of this product is to help in those
situations where an application stops working well and we didnt change a thing. In reality,
we all probably know from experience that something has changed, we just cant identify
what it is. The Application Runtime Expert is designed to give you the ability to take a
snapshot of application attributes when the system is running well so you can compare the
results with the current environment when the application is running poorly. This acts as a
valuable problem determination tool which can help reduce the time it takes to understand
and solve the issue. The product also provides an option to perform a health check and
offer to fix potential problems if some are identified. This tool can be used beyond the IBM i
provided software. A customer or ISV could define runtime attributes to be checked for their
application which could help identify potential issues with that application.
The Application Runtime Expert is scheduled to be available for both i 6.1 and 7.1.

Figure 1-32. Web Server enhancements AT961.0
Notes:
We continue to enhance the web serving capabilities of i with additional enhancements in
7.1. In this new release, the HTTP Server for i will be updated to use Apache 2.2 and add
new support for PCI compliance. Java 5 and 6 is supported for both 32-bit and 64-bit JVMs.
7.1 is the release where the classic JVM is no longer being shipped. The newer 32-bit and
64-bit JVMs provide more functionality and better performance than the older Classic JVM.
The Integrated Web Application Server which was shipped a few years ago is updated to
support Java 5 and 6 applications with i 7.1. The Integrated Web Services Server received
a major performance boost in 7.1, provides support for static WSDL and is now enabled to
work with programs that exist in an Independent ASP.

A major enhancement is from Rational is a new offering called Open Access for RPG.
Open Access extends the capabilities of RPG applications by allowing them to reach the
latest end-user clients and devices without requiring a 5250 data stream provided by an
IBM product like HATS or a non-IBM screen scraping product.
Open Access for RPG provides the software that allows applications to use new devices in
a simpler way than before. It requires something called handle solutions which tool
providers are working to provide for common devices and interfaces.

Notes:
In order to take advantage of this new support, minor changes need to be made to the RPG
program to utilize handlers which translate whatever you want to do in your application and
make it available in the format the handler supports.
This chart describes at a high level the difference between todays RPG applications and
those that use Open Access. By eliminating the 5250 data stream, you can have a much
richer client experience that is suited for the device being used by the end-user of the
application.
Weve been working with several companies who offer pre-built handlers for many
pervasive devices. If they dont have what youre looking for, you can contract with IBM
Lab Services to build the handler you need.

While the strategy for managing IBM i moving to a browser-based solution via Director
Navigator for i, we continue to support and enhance the IBM i Access family of products for
7.1. Improvements for interoperating with .NET solutions and with ODBC and OLE
database providers are included. Now that the XML data type is supported in DB2 for i, the
IBM i Access product now supports the use of this data type.
Many networking enhancements have been provided as well. As IPv6 becomes adopted
throughout the industry over the next decade, IBM i is being enhanced to use the ISC
DHCP server which is provided by an industry standard consortium which will make it
easier to take advantage of changes to IPv6 technology in the future. More networking
functions in the i operating system now support IPv6 in 7.1. Another very important
networking enhancement in 7.1 is the enablement of the Telnet client to use the SSL
protocol. This feature which many customers have asked for is also being PTFed back to
6.1 and 5.4.

be used to compare relative performance versus earlier generations of POWER
technology. As you can see from this chart the POWER7 systems can provide over 300%
better performance over comparable POWER6 models due to better performance per core
and more cores per chip.

Figure 1-54. IBM i license transfer AT961.0
Notes:
For those customers who are not upgrading from POWER6 to POWER7 such as those
who want to move from a POWER5 system directly to POWER7, we now have a License
Transfer PRPQ which makes it more economical to move up without an upgrade because
some of the value of the original IBM i license is preserved and transferred to the new
system. Some fees will apply, but this is a very good option for those who are considering a
replacement system, want to move workloads from one system to another, or want to
consolidate workloads from multiple systems onto a single system.
This PRPQ is implemented though the eConfig tool from 550 and larger systems and
requires a SWMA contract on the systems involved.

Figure 1-55. POWER6 to POWER7 upgrades AT961.0
Notes:
Another announcement in 1H 2010 was an upgrade path from the POWER6 570 to the 3.5
GHz Power 770 or both options of the Power 780. So customers who have a POWER6 570
can upgrade to one of the new systems and keep their serial number. There is no upgrade
path from the POWER5 570 to POWER7, but you can still upgrade the POWER5 570 to
POWER6 and then upgrade from POWER6 to POWER7 at some time in the future if you
want to maintain the system serial number. Many i customers value the upgrade path
because the IBM i licenses move to the new system with the upgrade which can be a
considerable cost savings.
Also, a statement of direction was announced for a POWER7 follow-on to the Power 520
and the Power 595 which are the POWER6 low-end and high-end servers respectively. If a
customer has a Power 520 2 or 4-core type 8203 server, they will be able to upgrade to the
new POWER7 low-end server when it becomes available. The Power 595 statement of
direction for POWER7 indicated that there are plans to offer up to 256 processor cores in
the same physical footprint and energy envelope as the largest Power 595 64-core server.
Upgrade paths are also planned from the Power 595 with 12X I/O to the new POWER7
high-end server.

Power 520 Statement of Direction
IBM plans to provide upgrade paths in 2010 from the POWER6 Power
520 2 and 4-core
servers to next generation POWER7 processor-based entry servers.
Power 595 Statement of Direction
IBM plans to deliver a new high-end server in 2010 with up to 256
POWER7 processor cores. Designed to operate within the same
physical footprint and energy envelope of the current 64-core Power 595
server. IBM also plans to provide an upgrade path from the current IBM
Power 595 server with 12X I/O to the new POWER7 high-end server.
