Transition IVM to HMC
HMC V7 R770 driver
Terminology
Transition means the conversion of managed system(s) that are currently managed by
the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) to the Hardware Management Console
(HMC) environment
Transition Types
Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) to HMC
What is Transitioned
Managed System(s)
What is Not Transitioned
All partition related information is stored on the managed system itself, so that will
not be lost
The partition profiles are not transitioned but are reconstructed from the
managed systems partition data
Dumps, system/error logs, user data

Transition Managed Systems Steps IVM to HMC
Precondition: Managed System is in IVM Managed State
Step 1: Connect Managed System to HMC (Transition will be done as part of
this step)
Step 2: Update FSP Passwords
Post Condition: Managed System is now HMC Managed
Note: Unlike the automatic IVM to HMC transition, the process of HMC to IVM
transition is manual

Hardware Management Console
What is the HMC?
The IBM Hardware Management Console for Power Systems
provides a standard user interface for configuring and operating
multiple Virtual Server and SMP systems. The HMC supports the Host
system with features that enable a system administrator to manage
configuration and operation of Virtual Servers in a Host system, as
well as to monitor the Host system for hardware problems. It consists
of a custom 32-bit Intel-based desktop PC with a DVD-RAM drive
running Linux.
What does the HMC do? (Request the actions to be performed)
Powers the Host systems on and off
Creates and maintains a multiple-Virtual Server environment
Displays a virtual operating system session terminal for each Virtual
Server
Displays virtual operator panel values for each Virtual Server
Detects, reports, and stores changes in hardware conditions
Acts as a service focal point for service representatives to determine
an appropriate service strategy and enable the Service Agent Call-
Home capability
Activates additional resources on demand CoD (Specific to certain
HMC code levels and Firmware levels)
Performs Virtual Server Relocation

performance also equals worst overall utilization. Its a trade-off

30
Maximum number of Virtual Servers limited by the number of available
Cores
Hypervisor creates Dedicated Pool of cores without the PowerVM
feature activated during the power-on of the Host system
Hypervisor creates Shared Pool of cores with the PowerVM feature
activated during the power-on of the Host system
Dedicated processor pool is created when dedicated Virtual Servers are
activated
Best Performance all cpu cycles are dedicated to the Virtual Server
POWER5 unused cpu cycles are wasted
POWER6 / POWER7 unused cpu cycles CAN be used by the Shared
Pool if the Host is properly configured
Dedicated and Shared Processor Pools

31
Dedicated Processor Entitlement
Minimum Processors - Smallest processor entitlement during Virtual Server activation
- Limit for dynamically decreasing processor entitlement
Desired Processors - Optimal processor entitlement
- Processor entitlement determined at Virtual Server activation
- Processor entitlement between Minimum and Desired settings, but the minimum processing
unit entitlement must be attained for activation
Maximum Processors - Limit for dynamically increasing processor
entitlement
AIX and PowerVM Workshop
2013 IBM Corporation
32
Shared Processor Micro-partitions SPLPAR
Virtual Servers are defined to be dedicated or shared
Dedicated VServers use whole number(s) of cores
Shared VServers use whole or fractions of cores from a Shared Pool
Shared processor pool - subset of physical cores in a system
All cores that are not dedicated to Virtual Servers
Entitled capacity (EC) expressed in the form of number of 0.01 core units
Desired: Size of Virtual Server EC at activation, between minimum and desired
Minimum: Virtual Server wont start if minimum EC is not available
Maximum: EC that cant be exceeded in Dynamic operation(s)
Divided among the virtual processors in the Virtual Server
Capped vs. uncapped
Capped: Entitled Capacity limited to desired entitlement
Uncapped: Entitled Capacity limited by unused capacity in the pool
SPLPARs (another term for Shared Processor Virtual Servers) run in virtual
processors
Virtual cores in an Virtual Server are dispatched on physical cores in the POWER
Server
Virtual Server weighting to determine preference when pool cycles are constrained
Some VServers more favored (max weight 255), some less favored (min weight 1)
