GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

Friday, November 20, 2009 -10:00 a.m.


325 Graff Main Hall

Members Present: Michele Thorman, Kasi Periyasamy, Rob Dixon, Glenn Wright,
Abdulaziz Alfessi, Jim Finch, Michelle Stertz, Bernadette Taylor
Consultants Present: Bruce May, Charles Martin-Stanley, Chris Bakkum

The meeting was called to order at 10:02 am by Rob Dixon.

1. M/S/P (7-0-1) to approve minutes from October 23, 2009 meeting.

2. M/S/P (8-0-0) to move into closed session to review RSEL grants and
graduate faculty applications.

3. RSEL grant review

M/S/P (7-0-1) to approve full funding for the 14 proposals that were recommended
for full funding by the RSEL grant review subcommittee (Bushman, Cohen,
Kaphingst, Kreitinger, Tepper, Jeanes, Horlitz, Rentschler, McHugh, Pustina,
Bauer, Foltz, Richters, Stoner).
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve the RSEL subcommittee’s recommendation to not fund the
Holthusen proposal
M/S/P (7-0-1) to approve the RSEL subcommittee’s recommendation to not fund the
Hoppenjan, Rooney, Schuh, Sobotta and Jones joint proposal
M/S/P (7-0-1) to approve the RSEL subcommittee’s recommendation to not fund the
Gerlach, Stommes, Price, Ostrem and Quealy joint proposal.
M/S/P (7-0-1) to approve the RSEL subcommittee’s recommendation to not fund the
Alford proposal.
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve partial funding of the Gehrke and Steenstra proposals
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve the RSEL subcommittee’s recommendation to not fund the
Johnson proposal.
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve partial funding of the O’Brien proposal
M/S/P (7-0-1) to approve partial funding of the Hovseplan proposal
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve partial funding of the Passow proposal
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve partial funding of the Volt proposal
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve partial funding of the Coolidge proposal
M/S/P (8-0-0) to approve partial funding of the Thompson proposal

4. Problems encountered while reviewing RSEL grant proposals were discussed.


Some faculty mentors provided virtually identical support letters for multiple
students. It was generally agreed that faculty should provide a support letter with
specific information about each student who has submitted a proposal. This issue will
be communicated to faculty by a method to be discussed at a future grad council
meeting.

Several Occupational Therapy student joint proposals requesting support for


international experiences were not funded. It was generally agreed that the RSEL
grant program is not an appropriate source of funds for these international
experiences.

5. Graduate Faculty Status Application Review

College of Business Administration


MSP (8-0-0) to approve granting Murray and Yang associate graduate faculty status
as recommended by the review subcommittee.
MSP (8-0-0) to approve granting William Mass associate graduate faculty status
instead of the full graduate faculty status applied for.

College of Liberal Studies


MSP (8-0-0) to approve affiliate graduate faculty status as recommended by the
review subcommittee to Autz, Hylkema, Lynch, Ratigan, Tyvoll, Stoeckly, Void
and Witt-Smith and to approve associate graduate faculty status as recommended
by the review subcommittee to Bakken, Basten, Crank and Kortenkamp.
MSP (7-0-1) to approve granting Vandenberg Davis full graduate faculty status

College of Science and Health


MSP (8-0-0) to approve affiliate graduate faculty status as recommended by the
review subcommittee to Conaway, De Jager, Fritsche and Kaiser and associate
graduate faculty status to King, Lesher, Lin and Pettit as recommended by the
review subcommittee.
MSP (8-0-0) to approve granting Anita Baines full graduate faculty status as
recommended by the review subcommittee.
MSP (7-0-1) to approve granting Karen Graham full graduate faculty status as
recommended by the review subcommittee.
MSP (8-0-0) to approve granting Sumei Liu full graduate faculty status status as
recommended by the review subcommittee.
MSP (6-0-2) to approve granting Stacey Meardon full graduate faculty status as
recommended by the review subcommittee.
MSP to approve granting Greg Sanderfoot graduate full graduate faculty status as
recommended by the review subcommittee.

6. MSP (8-0-0) to go into open session.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
