MACEDONIA AND FACT RELATED MATTERS

MACEDONIA AND ITS AHILEES HEEL

Macedonia has been a civilised region since time immemorial.
Its one of the oldest constantly populated areas in the world and has had varying time periods.
It has enjoyed independence and sovereignty as well as being dominated and governed by an
outside force.
It has had mixed fortune as any other part of the world and enjoyed periods of great stability and
progress as well as decline, occupation and being a vassal state or being integrated into an invading
empire, all in a time span of about two and a half millennia.
Theres been no safe pattern between periods of imperialist expansion and global world domination
and being swamped into another expanding super power, as it happened when Alexanders global
dominion disintegrated and from a period of initiative in only a matter of seasons it became a
province in the fast expanding Roman Empire, all in a single lifetime.
A Macedonian man of only one generation could tell extreme stories of World rule and deteriorating
and humiliating defeat and subsequent integration into foreign hands.
Periods of great initiative and proactivity as well as being a cultural influence on the rest of the world
have changed hands with occupation and an effort to assimilate the local population into another,
most often resulting into times of great poverty when self determination and the own identity of the
native indigenous Macedonian was denied.
However, most of the time Macedonia as a region has had a distinctly authentic and original history
of evolution and development well different from any other neighbouring part.
Even under occupation, Macedonia enjoyed a level of autonomy and it has been a well established
region in its own right.
With its specific multi cultural, religious and multi ethnic character, even when administered from
the outside, it has been a whole integrated region with its own unique way of life.
Regional political affairs, even invading foreign rulers have always had a great amount of respect for
the integrity of the region.
Macedonia always came as a whole regardless of the situation and the ambitions of the invading
forces.
With a well developed infrastructure even before the arrival of the Romans, Macedonia was one
well integrated region and has always enjoyed a reasonable level of autonomy.

Macedonia stood the test of time, and resumed with integrity even after periods of mixed regional
rule.
But the Macedonians always moved around different centres of gravity in the region.
The most serious blow to future integrity of the region came at the beginning of the twentieth
century, when the super powers of the day made a decision to divide Macedonia along totally
artificial borders in a bald and shallow attempt to reduce regional power and influence in European
politics, to marginalize the authority of the region as well as to break up any attempt for future
independence.
In the most imperialist divide and rule manner, Macedonia was divided among the neighbouring
countries and the parts were integrated into the tree existing Balkan states.
The biggest reason for this was the fact that the Macedonians did not manage to come up united
and form a coalition of strength and unity, which was one of the key aspects that would lead to
future sovereignty.
This was concluded very well in the writings of one of the most prominent Macedonian
revolutionaries of the time, the late Goce Delcev, who in the end of his political activity finally made
one big call for all the Macedonians to unite, regardless of religion and ethnic background.
Today, contemporary Republic of Macedonia is a realization of his vision.
Macedonia today comes one full circle, and once again after Alexander the Great is consolidated into
a cultural, religious and ethnic melting pot.
In the sovereign Republic of Macedonia today, Albanians, Muslim and Catholic, Turks, ethnic Serbs,
Slav Orthodox Macedonians as well as a Sunni Muslim community of Slavs called Torbeshi, a small
Shia Turkish community called Bektashi, a thriving Vallachian community, an established Catholic
community, as well as an old Jewish community and a thriving Roma community thats well
integrated into Macedonian society with their own political representatives and members of
parliament, all live side by side participating and contributing to the multicultural character of the
country in one big and peaceful joint community.
Independent Republic of Macedonia since its declaration of sovereignty and establishment of state
has categorically rejected a one nation state solution, which has been a mainstream trend with all
the other neighbouring countries.
Macedonia is multiethnic and multireligious by constitution, allowing even the smallest communities
absolute freedom of self determination and religious practice as well as education in their own
language and preservation of their culture and heritage.
