Welcome back to the start of another year at St Aloysius and a special welcome to those of you for whom this
will be your first
of many years at the College. With trials for summer sport teams in Basketball, Waterpolo and Cricket taking place this Friday and Saturday, thank you for assisting your son with his summer sport choice. All boys have now been accounted for in terms of choice of sport for selection trials. Boys will be transported to trials on Friday to various locations and the trials will continue on Saturday 31 J anuary for most boys. The following points regarding these trials should be of assistance to you;
CRICKET Boys from Years 3 to 6 may trial for cricket with 2 or 3 teams in each age group* (In each year group we have an A team being traditional team and 2 super 8 teams for the B and Cs in the Year 5 & 6 age groups). Traditional cricket lasts approximately 3 hours on a Saturday morning and Super 8 games last for 1.5 hours. There are approximatel y 12 boys in A team sides and 10-12 boys in Super 8 team sides.
*In regards to Year 3 there is only 1 cricket team for this age group and all remaining boys who do not trial or wish to play cricket in 2015 will be participating in skill sessions during Friday afternoon sport.
Please note for all years that if your son does not wish to trial for cricket in Term I there is no opportunity for him to play in Term IV when the summer sport season re commences. This applies to all sports.
BASKETBALL YEARS 5&6 Boys in Years 5 and 6 may trial for basketball with eight teams made up of mixed ability year 5 and 6 boys. Games last approximately 50 minutes on a Saturday morning. There are approximately 8-10 boys per team.
I suggest that if your son wants to trial for basketball then he attends to this first as if he is not successful by 3pm Friday then he may attend the cricket trials on the Saturday in his year group.
If you son is not successful in basketball by 3pm Friday and does not want to trial for cricket on the Saturday then he is not required on the Saturday and will do Healthy Lifestyle for the remainder of Term 1 starting week 2.
BASKETBALL YEARS 3&4 Boys in Years 3 and 4 may trial for basketball in 2015. Those who are not successful on the Friday may attend Cricket trials on the Saturday morning. If your son does not make basketball on the Friday and does not want to play cricket he does not have to attend the Saturday trials and will do healthy lifestyle as his chosen sport for the remainder of the Term. There will be four teams made up of mixed Year 3 and 4 boys. Games last approximately 50 minutes on a Saturday morning. There will be 8 boys per team.
TENNIS Tennis trials will have already been conducted (new students were notified in term 4) in Term IV 2014 and are now closed. Grading will take place during this trial period. A separate note from our MIC of Tennis will be distributed to your son.
WATERPOLO
YEARS 3 & 4 - N/A
YEARS 5 & 6 COMBINED - There will be 2 teams depending on the numbers made up of nine to twelve boys each from Years 5 and 6 combined. All teams train twice a week, once either before or after school and once during school hours on a Friday. Matches are on Saturday mornings with each game being 45min long in duration. Please note though that if your son is not successful at Fridays water polo trial he may attend Saturday morning basketball (slightly harder trial) or cricket trials. If he does not attend either then he will not be playing a summer sport for the school.
NOTE As indicated to you earlier your son may not get his first preference for the sport that he has chosen.
HOW THE TRIALS ARE CONDUCTED FRIDAY 30 January 10.30am-2.30pm On Friday all boys are required at school at normal time (bus departure is 9.00am) in their sports uniform, they may bring any sport specific uniform and or equipment with them in their sports bag but all other equipment is supplied. Boys will then be asked to move to the buses travelling to the sport which they nominated for during the first week of school. Regardless if you live close by to the trial venues parents are NOT PERMITTED to drop off their sons to these. A sports assembly will be held prior to boys being dismissed to the buses and every boy is to arrive at school a little earlier than normal for this Friday specifically. Please see the attached trial schedule for further details of all trials and venues. At 2.30pm on Friday all trials cease and boys are returned to school by bus for normal dismissal.
Boys are to bring with them sunscreen, water bottle, recess and lunch as there will be no canteen facilities available that day. All students must also bring hats as all trial venues are outdoors.
SATURDAY 31 January VARIOUS TIMES Parents are asked to drop off their sons (who were successful on the Friday afternoon) to the training venues (please see trialling table marked SATURDAY 31 Jan TRIALS) 20min minutes before the start time and ensure they are correctly attired (students are asked to wear summer sports uniform to the trials and new students are asked not to purchase any sport specific uniforms before team selections are complete). Boys that arrive late only minimise the time that the selectors can view them in skills and drills.
Parents may be asked by the selectors to assist in the rotation of groups but if you are not asked to assist by the selector please watch from a distance so as to ensure equality for all boys during the selection period. Please do not approach the selectors.
MONDAY 2 FEBRUARY SQUAD LISTS DISPLAYED On Monday SQUAD lists for all summer 2015 sports will be displayed. If your sons name is on this list then he will attend team training in that week. Parents are asked to purchase sport specific uniforms for the first game that is scheduled for Saturday 7 th February. Draws and training timetables for all team will available for viewing and downloading through MANRESA.
