Subject: October 30, 2013 Hearing Officer Training (Spokane)

East Side Hearing Officers,

Please find attached a copy of the agenda for the October 30, 2013 training session. You are the 9
hearing officers on the east side that have signed up for the October 30, 2013 training session in
Spokane. It will be held at my office from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. along with a sandwich lunch. As
you can see by the agenda, there are 6 recent Supreme Court cases that need to be covered. I have
assigned one case to a number of you. We are fortunate to have David Thorner to recite on the
Starczewski case a case he handled as hearing officer.

For those of you assigned to recite on a case, please plan to spend 15 minutes on your assigned
case. Please focus on what you feel will be of benefit to us as hearing officers. If you have any
questions concerning this, please feel free to contact me.

This will be a smaller group for training so you will have an opportunity to discuss any points of
wisdom or concern. Please review the new ELCs that will go into effect on January 1, 2014 so we
can address any questions.
Julie Shankland will open the session with a power point explaining the adopted changes to the ELCs.
Lots of changes to cover!

Also, at this meeting we can all welcome our new hearing officer, Rebecca Stewart.

Shelly Gleason from my office will contact you with a sandwich menu so you can order lunch. We
can enjoy our lunch during the training session so we will not have to take a break.
