27 Years of Service
August 2014
SHARING the JOY of SOROPTIMIST SERVICE
Share the JOY of Soroptimist Service
Team SICO did it again! Kicking off the
year with the Adopt-a-School project led by
Maile Kanemaru and Marion Poirier, the J oy
of Soroptimist was spread through out the
Kipapa Elementary, Kahuku Elementary and
the Hale o Hooulu a me Mauliola, the day
program of the Bobby Benson Center. Leona
Soto, chairperson for the Leeward Abuse
Shelter, also spread J oy with school supplies
and back packs for the children at the Shelter.
Although the budget was spent and still the
needs were not met, Leona and Maile ap-
pealed to our members who generously do-
nated supplies and cash.
If all of our members could witness the J oy,
gratitude and appreciative smiles, you would
know how much your generosity impacted
each of the schools and the Shelter clients.
The Hale staff had
a major funding cut
and is seeking a
smaller area for a
classroom. Their
priority was a book-
shelf along with
school supplies.
Their focus is on
children who need
alternative learning
choices so they can

return to regular school and attain gradua-
tion with their peers. The staff helps the
children learn to make better choices to
increase their self esteem and be able to
function more productively.

Message
NA MEA HOU
Aloha Members,
What a feeling! Our SICO members donated and distributed
much needed school supplies at a critical time for families
preparing their children for the new school year. J ust imagine
the feelings of gratitude in receiving the assistance, and an
even greater joy in being able to give from the bottom of our
hearts. Mahalo for sharing the SICO aloha spirit at Kipapa,
Kahuku, the Leeward Abuse Shelter and the Bobby Benson
day program. Times are tough for so many.
Thank you also to Susan Lau who will join me in working at
the Mililani Uka Elementary Polling place to help donate our
stipends to SICO to help our service projects. Your civic duty
is most appreciated.
The October 26
th
Annual Fundraiser at Ala Moana Hotel
will be here soon and we need your help with silent auction
items valued at $50 or more, and sales of tickets. Please ko-
kua as much as you can. This is our major fundraiser to help
sustain our service projects.

Mahalo for your compassion,
Rene
ALA MOANA HOTEL
The time is getting closer for SICOs biggest fundraiser.
Get your friends and family excited to join us for a great din-
ner, great bargains at the Silent Auction tables and a fun cos-
tume parade. Its a masquerade,
after all.
Members are reminded to start
earlier to get their silent auction
items listed with J ackie. New
technology with the auction
awaits us. Make your contacts
for gift cards/certificates to add to
the many baskets that are accu-
mulating. Lets all insure a great
fundraiser to fund us through this
year and maybe, for future years too.

Happy Anniversary
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Tammie Cullen, August 9
Lyn Lurbe, August 14
Linda Ah Hee, August 26
SICO members celebrated a very spe-
cial lady for her birthday. Glenda Rother
was instrumental as an advisor and in the
founding of SICO. Those members who
could enjoyed her company at one of
Glendas favorite places, Assaggios in
Hawaii Kai. Shes shown with her favor-
ite dessert. SICO will be celebrating 28
years of service in September and Glenda
has remembered to send us a card on each
of these anniversaries.

Kahuku Elementary rarely receives any assistance and their
new Principal, Sam Izumi, was overwhelmed with the amount
of supplies we were able to donate. Their priority for a new
program was ear buds. Chair Maile used up the budgeted
amount for 29 ear buds and the remainder of the supplies were
member donations. Mr. Izumi mentioned that parents were
already calling the school regretting that they were not able to
furnish school supplies for their children.

At the Shelter, backpacks were a priority.
Leona was able to provide the requested
amount along with lots of school supplies.

SHARING THE JOY OF SOROPTIMIST SERVICE
SICO has supported Kipapa School
for several years. Again this year, SICO
members also assisted with distributing
the school supplies to the targeted chil-
dren. Here, too, the parents are so very
appreciative.

For this photo op, members later learned that the back packs had been do-
nated by a non-profit group in support of Marshallese families. Someone
watching dubbed this lineup as the candidates for Miss Kipapa. Principal
Corinne is between J ackie and Lorraine with Vice Principal Leeann at the far
right.
