ABOUT TONIGHTS SPECIAL INGREDIENT: CHICKPEAS
By using locally grown ingredients to source its school meals program in countries like Ethiopia, WFP is not only
feeding hungry children, but also supporting small-scale farmers. Known as homegrown school meals, this
approach boosts income for small-scale farmers by creating a reliable buyer for their crops.
Since 2008, WFP has been working with small-scale farmers across the globe to achieve better yields, reduce their
losses after harvest and improve the quality of their staple crops
With an average of 22% protein, chickpeas are a more sustainable alternative to meat and have the potential to
reduce risk of coronary artery disease and diabetes.
Ethiopia is already the worlds ffth largest producer of chickpeas. Experts say the country could grow more than
twice as much if farmers had access to better seeds and modern farming techniques.

ABOUT CAVA
As children of Greek immigrants, longtime friends Ike Grigoropoulos, Dimitri Moshovitis and Ted Xenohristos
decided in the summer of 2006 that they wanted to open a Greek restaurant that reminded them of the mezze/
tapas style dining of their home. Since then, the trio has opened two other restaurants and a casual dining called
Cava Grill. Te trio also sells their all-natural spreads in food markets up and down the east coast. Cavas philoso-
phy is their belief in big favor with a small footprint and giving back to those in need.
Cava Mezze wanted to be a part of WFPs eforts because it values its commitment to helping children
and families around the world. WFP strives to not only raise money to help fght the worlds hunger
problem, but also help people in need build better futures. Giving people money is one thing, giving them
the tools to succeed is another and that is exactly what WFP is doing.

in low-income countries who would otherwise be forced to marry young or work to feed themselves.
Just 25 can provide a school meal to a child in need. Just $50 can feed a child for an entire school year.
