Climbers Killed By UK R
Avalanche Fell 1,000 Feet
A MOUNTAIN rescuer says the four
climbers who died in an avalanche in the
Scotland Highlands fell around 1,000 feet
and ended up buried in thick snow.
The two men and two women were
found dead last month after the ac-
cident at Glencoe, one of Scotlands
best-known glens. A ffth woman in the
group, aged 24, has been hospitalised
with serious injuries and a sixth man
managed to escape using his ice axe.
Andy Nelson from the Glencoe
Mountain Rescue team said the group
was buried in snow up to 6-1/2 feet deep.
He said the slide would have unfolded
in a split second and they would
have been traveling at a speed that was
impossible to stop.
13 Hurt After Helicopter R
Crashes In London

A HELICOPTER crashed into a crane
and fell on a crowded street in central
London during rush hour January 16,
sending flames and black plumes of
smoke into the air. The pilot and one
person on the ground were killed and
13 others injured, offcials said.
The helicopter crashed in misty
weather just south of the River Thames
near the Underground and mainline train
station at Vauxhall, and close to the
headquarters of spy agency MI6.
Police said one person had critical
injuries. Six were taken to a nearby
hospital with minor injuries and seven
treated at the scene, ambulance of-
fcials said.
It was something of a miracle that
this was not many, many times worse,
police Cmdr Neil Basu said.
The pilot, who was killed, had re-
quested to divert and land at the nearby
London Heliport because of bad weath-
er, the heliport said in a statement.
The London Heliport never gained
contact with the helicopter, the state-
ment said.

A TEENAGE Pakistani girl shot in
the head by the Taliban for promoting
girls education has been released from
hospital.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birming-
ham offcials said last month that Malala
Yousufzai will be treated as an outpa-
tient before being readmitted for further
cranial re-constructive surgery expected
in early February.
Experts have been optimistic that
Yousufzai, who was airlifted to Britain
from Pakistan to receive specialized
medical care, has a good chance of re-
covery because the brains of teenagers
are still growing and can better adapt
to trauma.
Dr Dave Rosser says her medical
team decided shed beneft from being
at home with her family.
Malala was returning home from
school in Pakistan last year when she
was targeted.
LAST MONTH saw the London Tube turn 150 years old.
Opening in 1863. the London Underground became
the worlds first railway system of its kind, taking the
heavy traffic off the the congested streets above
and making it easier to get into London.
Through the years the tube has taken on a number
of roles, most notably being used as air-raid shelters
during the WWII Blitz.
Today the underground carries more than three
million passengers a day across 275 stations on its
253 mile network.

To Visit Rome In March
ROYAL OFFICIALS in Britain say
Queen Elizabeth II will be visiting Rome
for two days in March.
Buckingham Palace says the monarch
will be making the trip with her husband,
Prince Philip, on March 6 to 7.
There were scarce details and it was
not clear if the queen will be visiting the
Vatican as part of the trip.
The queen last visited Italy in 2000,
when she toured Rome and Milan.
Philip represented the monarch at
Pope Benedict XVIs inaugural mass
in the Vatican in 2005.

BRITISH and Irish burger fans could face
a Whopper shortage. Burger King has
stopped buying beef from an Irish meat
processor whose patties were found to
contain traces of horsemeat.
The fast food chain said last month it had
dropped Silvercrest Foods as a supplier for
its UK and Ireland restaurants as a volun-
tary and precautionary measure.
Silvercrest, which is owned by ABP
Food Group, shut down its production line
last month and recalled 10 million burgers
from supermarket shelves in Britain and
Ireland after horse DNA was found in some
beef products.
TRADITION
Rival McDonalds said it does not buy
beef from Silvercrest or other affected
suppliers.
The presence of horsemeat in beef is a
sensitive issue in Britain and Ireland, which
do not have a tradition of eating horses. The
British tabloid The Sun reported the Burger
King story under the headline Shergar
King, a reference to a famous racehorse.
Products from another Irish frm and
one in Britain also were contaminated by
horsemeat. Most had only small traces, but
one burger of a brand sold by the British
supermarket chain Tesco contained 29
percent horsemeat.
Burger King says its patties are made
from 100 percent beef.
Offcials say the horsemeat poses no risk
to human health, but the episode has raised
food security worries.
ENVIRONMENT
More concern arose when lawmaker
Mary Creagh, environment spokeswoman
for Britains opposition Labour Party,
said that several horses slaughtered in
the country last year had tested positive
for phenylbutazone, an anti-infammatory
drug given to horses that can cause cancer
in humans.
The Food Standards Agency confrmed
that meat from fve horses had tested posi-
tive for the drug, but said none had been
approved for sale in Britain. It said the rel-
evant food safety authorities were informed
in cases where the meat was exported to
other countries.
CROCODILE
Very little horsemeat is sold in Britain
but the country sends thousands of horses
a year abroad to be killed for meat.
The handful of hardy entrepreneurs who
sell horsemeat in Britain say the scandal
has paradoxically been good for busi-
ness, raising the profle of a meat few had
considered.
Weve been very busy the last couple of
days, said Paul Webb, director of Exotic
Meats, a company in the English Midlands
that sells horse burgers, sausages and steaks
alongside cuts of crocodile, kangaroo and
impala.
He says typical horsemeat buyers are
middle-aged, middle-class people who
want to try something different.

a helicopter gunner in Afghanistan drew
intense media coverage in Britain this

following a 20-week deployment in which
he served as a co-pilot and gunner in a

SEVERAL HUNDRED schools in
England closed last month because
of heavy snow, prompting some har-
rumphing that the nation surrenders
too easily to foul weather.
About 5,000 of the 23,500 primary
and secondary schools in England
closed January 22, and hundreds
were closed again the following day
especially in the southwest.
Brian Lightman, leader of the Asso-
ciation of School and College Leaders,
told the BBC that the nation needs to
resist a culture in which a little bit of
snow produces chaos.
Lightman suggested, however, that
the problem was more to do with roads
not being cleared than with heads of
schools. People in southern England
are notoriously ill-prepared for snow.
Snow shovels are scarce and walkways
often remain treacherous until warm
weather fnally melts the ice.

Proposes British
Vote On EU

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron
pledged last month to offer citizens a vote
on whether to leave the European Union if
his party wins the next election, prompting
rebukes from European leaders accusing
the premier of putting the blocs future at
risk over domestic politics.
Claiming that public disillusionment
with the 27-nation EU is at an all-time
high, Cameron used a long-awaited
speech in central London to say that the
terms of Britains membership in the bloc
should be revised and the countrys voters
should have a say.
Cameron proposed that his Conserva-
tive Party renegotiate the UKs relation-
ship with the EU if it wins the next general
election, expected in 2015.
Once that new settlement has been
negotiated, we will give the British people
a referendum with a very simple in-or-out
choice to stay in the EU on these new
terms. Or come out altogether, Cameron
said.
The speech was seen by many as a
gamble to shore up support from Cam-
erons fractured, increasingly anti-EU
party that risked antagonizing other
countries focused on stemming the euro
zone debt crisis.
ENTHUSIASTIC
The fercely independent island nation
has never been an enthusiastic member of
the bloc, seeing itself as culturally differ-
ent and balking at having policy dictated
by Brussels. But the drumbeat has grown
over fears that new EU regulations to ad-
dress the debt crisis will further restrict the
countrys control over its own economic
policies.
Many EU member states, which had in
the run-up to the speech stressed the impor-
tance of Britains presence in the bloc, took
a sharper tone after Cameron spoke.

last month saw chocolate baby heads being
very popular.
An artist is selling the realistic life-sized
babies heads made out of white chocolate,
and the bizarre creations weigh just over
2lbs, contain 5,000 calories, and cost 35.
One would have thought buyers may have
been cautious over the bizarre delicacies,
but creator Annabel de Vetten, 41, from
Birmingham, says she has been swamped
with orders.
The look is quite controversial but if
everybody liked them they wouldnt be as
fun to make, she said. They were originally
commissioned for a pilot episode for a UK
TV show which wanted something with a
serious shock factor. From that point of
view, Ive accomplished the mission, added

Real Rail Attempt
A FIRM that makes toy trains has made an
offer to run a free train service on the West
Coast Main Line. The company also prom-
ises no delays and frequent services.
But the plans have brought protests from
Sir Richard Bransons Virgin Trains.
Toy train makers Bigjigs lodged a bid to
run services on the West Coast Main Line,
promising no delays, frequent services and
free trains for all.
But, after frst winning in their tongue-
in-cheek bid, the decision was overturned
following Virgins legal challenge.
The Department for Transport promptly
replied, thanking the firm for its helpful
proposals that would certainly brighten up
the railway.
In its letter to transport secretary Patrick
McLoughlin, Bigjigs Toys bosses wrote:
There is only one company that stands head
and shoulders above the rest. This company
has been delivering exceptional service on
time and to low cost for its customers for
years, and should be considered a serious
candidate amongst the other four bidders.
You might ask who can run such a service.
Simple. Bigjigs Rail.
Department for Transport private secre-
tary Mark Reach replied thanking Bigjigs for
its letter and with advice on how to proceed
with its application.
However he warns the bid is unlikely to
succeed with Bigjigs wooden train carriages
unlikely to meet modern crashworthiness
standards.
British Garlic Smugglers
Sought By Police In Sweden
POLICE ARE hunting two Britons who are
suspected on being behind a 10m garlic-
smuggling scam in Sweden.
Investigators believe the pair not named
by police shipped tons of the pungent veg
into neighbouring Norway from China and
then traffcked it across the border to avoid
EU import taxes.
State prosecutor Thomas Ahlstrand told
local media: Were talking about big money
and a proftable operation. It involves many
shipments of garlic.
According to a Swedish arrest warrant the
pair set up a company in Norway in 2009 and
have since smuggled more than 100 tons of
garlic into Sweden to dodge a 9.6 per cent
import duty.

did fnd the movie prop on a recent hotel stay
in the UK. Other odd bits and pieces that
have been left behind are: breast implants

Budget chain Travelodge says a winning
EuroMillions lottery ticket, a bucket of live
crabs and a diamond-encrusted iPhone were
also found in vacated rooms.
Each year our lost and found depart-
ments provide plenty of revelations, said
Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed.
From keys to a Bugatti, Harry Potters original
wand, a micro pig, breast implants to a script
from a well-known British soap programme,
our customers left-behinds demonstrate
what a cross section of people stay in our
527 hotels.
Other bizarre items included a box of 200
Queen Elizabeth masks, a trunk of chocolate
bars and a pantomime horse. In a Travelodge
in Essex, an 8ft pop-up spray tanning booth
was left behind by a group of girls nursing
their hangovers.
More than 20,000 books were also left
behind in hotel rooms, 7,000 of which were
of which were copies of EL James Fifty
Shades of Grey.

RETAILER JESSOPS announced last month
they would no longer be accepting gift
vouchers, nor accept returned goods as they
went into administration.
The application for administration was
fled at the High Court, leaving some 2,000
jobs at risk.
PwC administrator Rob Hunt said: Over
the last few days the directors, funders and
key suppliers have been in discussions as
regards additional consensual fnancial sup-
port for the business.
Jessops has struggled amid the digital
photo revolution and the retail shift to online

Live Broadcast
GALE FORCE WINDS and a mouse played
their parts in a recent live BBC TV weather
forecast.
Presenter Kate Kinsella was reading a
bulletin for BBC Three Counties radio, which
is broadcast to Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire
and Buckinghamshire, when she shrieked as
she spotted the rodent.
During the forecast, she said: We could
be seeing gale force winds from time to time
through the afternoon.
The good news is it will start ... ahh!
Sorry, theres a mouse just run past me in
my studio.
Asked by host Iain Lee if she was okay,
she replied: Yes Im fne, its just the unique
way in which this studio is run, there was
a mouse. Its quite sweet actually, bless
it, she added. The presenter fnished by
saying: That is your forecast, along with
the mouse.
Squirrel Rescue Takes Three
Fire Engines To The Scene
A SQUIRREL that was trapped on a pond
island must have been fattered when it saw
three fre engines rushing to its rescue.
At least seven frefghters with two ladders
helped to rescue the squirrel, in Watford
town centre, after a resident called to say
it had fallen in. The fre crews laid a ladder
between the pavement and the island in an
attempt to persuade the squirrel to crawl its
way back to safety.
The rodent ended up in the water again,
but it managed to swim to the ladder and
climb up the rungs to reach dry land,
bedraggled but apparently none the worse
for its ordeal.
Steven Giles-Medhurst, a local Lib-Dem
county councillor, questioned why it was
necessary to send such a large response to
rescue a wild animal.
On the face of it three fre engines for
a squirrel sounds excessive, and maybe
questions should be asked as to why there
were so many, he said.
A spokesman for Hertfordshire Fire and
Rescue said: The frst call we received
about this indicated that people were in
the water.
Had it been made clear to us during the
frst 999 call that no one was in the water, we
would have left the squirrel to the RSPCA.
Teachers In Trouble Following
Gangnam Style Video
FILMING A Gangnam Style video seemed
in innocent-enough prank for teachers at a
Roman Catholic school in Accrington. But
offcials were not happy that the shoot took
place on school property.
Staff including the headmaster at Mount
Carmel Roman Catholic High School in
Accrington, Lancashire, performed the
moves made famous by South Korean
rapper Psy.
The video shows teachers, receptionists
and cleaners performing Psys distinctive
lassoing and galloping dance moves in
locations around the campus.
It opens with school headmaster Xavier
Bowers with his feet on the desk in his
offce being fanned, and goes on to feature
staff performing in classrooms, corridors, a
minibus, a lift and the reception.
In one scene, copied from Psys original
video, two male members of staff wearing
only towels around their waists sit in a
changing room.
The video posted on YouTube with
the caption, You will never see our staff
in the same light again! has attracted a
variety of comments on the schools offcial
Facebook page.
One mother said it was hilarious but
added: How will I keep a straight face on
parents evening?, while a pupil noted: I will
never look at my teachers the same again.
Peter Britcliffe, a local Conservative
councillor, said: I am not a killjoy but I have
looked at the piece, which is being discussed
all over Accrington. It is the talk of the towns
young people.
Having viewed it myself, while most of it
is just good fun, there are parts of it certainly
that might not improve the respect there
should be between teachers and pupils.
Bowers rejected the criticism, saying:
This kind of thing strengthens the relation-
ship between teachers, pupils and parents
who have given us an overwhelmingly good
response.

catering assistant (washer up).
The new recruit will mainly work in the
staff restaurant but also be required to wash
other royal dishes. The successful candidate
needs to be punctual, reliable, able to work
well in a team and have a fexible and willing
attitude, according to the advert.
He or she will be based at Buckingham
Palace, but must be happy to travel and
work at other royal residences in the UK and
at weekends.
This would mean trips to Windsor,
Sandringham, Balmoral and the Palace of
Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh as and when
the household moves around.
You must be willing to work away from
London for up to three months of the year,

ADAM PACITTI believes in doing all it takes
where acquiring employment is concerned.
The unemployed graduate spent his last
500 on a billboard to help fnd him him
a job.
Pacitti, 24, of Ryde on the Isle of Wight,
said he acted out of desperation after
applying for more than 250 jobs in three
months.
As well as the billboard, in London, Pacitti,
who gained a frst class degree in media pro-
duction at the University of Winchester, has
also set up a website, employadam.com.
The site features a tongue-in-cheek video
in which Pacitti promotes his marketing
skills.
In it, he says: As you can see from my
email inbox I have spent countless hours
applying for jobs with no luck which is why
I have launched employadam.com. I am
looking for work in the ultra-competitive,
cut-throat and slightly vacuous industry that
is the media.
He continues: So if I seem like your ideal

Oompa-Loompas Sought
Following Violent Kebab Shop
Mugging
A MAN was attacked outside a kebab shop
last month, and detectives said they were
looking for two Oompa-Loompas to help
them with questions.
Police said the 28-year-old victim, in
Norwich was left with cuts to his face, nose
and lip, and two black eyes, reported The
Guardian.
The Oompa-Loompas, accompanied by
a man and a woman who were not wear-
ing fancy dress, attacked the victim in the
early hours.
Police are seeking a group of four people
a spokesman for Norfolk police said.
Two of the males were dressed as
Oompa-Loompas from (the Roald Dahl
book) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,
with painted orange faces and dyed green
hair and were wearing hooped tops.
The spokesman added: One of the males
in the group then pushed the victim to the
foor, before he got up. He was then hit on the
head, fell to the foor and hit again.

LIBRARY visitors to an Australian library
last month were smiling when faced with
a sign notifying them that all Lance Arm-
strong books were soon to be reshelved
in the fction section.
The sign was posted in Manly library
in Sydney just days after Armstrong
confessed to doping during his Tour de
France years in an Oprah TV interview.
The sign read: All non-fction books by
the cyclist, including Lance Armstrong:
Images of a Champion, would soon be
moved to the fction section.
A council spokesman said the sign
was a joke and that local libraries could
not arbitrarily reclassify books.
Armstrongs interview was watched
around the world as the 41-year-old
confessed to his drug taking.
Of the library sign, Chris Parsons of
Manly Council said: This was a prank,
and a member of the public has taken a
photo and posted it on social media and
its gone viral on social media.
Local reports said the sign was posted
by a student working part-time in the
library. Parsons did not confrm this but
said a little review would take place
at the library.
Pictures of the sign which ends
with a smiley face have been widely
circulated on social media, with many
commentators congratulating the library
on its stance.
Librarians do have a sense of
humour, said one Twitter user. Awe-
some. Slow clap Manly Beach Library,
said another.

The newly restored Met Steam Locomotive
No 1, the last one to be built by the Metro-
politan Railway, pulled Met Railway Jubilee
Carriage No 353, the oldest operational Tube
carriage.
The original idea for building an under-
ground railway came about when Victo-
rian engineers were charged with relieving
congestion on roads between Paddington,
Euston and Kings Cross mainline stations
and the City.
Travelling on the new railway was a nov-
elty that thousands of Londoners were eager
to experience and on the opening day long
queues formed at every station.
The line was a huge success, with more
than 25,000 passengers a day using the
Underground during its frst six months.
It now carries about 3.5 million passen-
gers on weekdays, serves 275 stations, and
has 253 miles of track, 45 per cent of which
is underground.
STAMPS MARK THE TUBES
BIG YEAR
A hidden treasure thats served London
for 150 years is being celebrated on a set
of stamps.
Showing the London Underground from
its formative days as a steam locomotive on
the Metropolitan Line, in 1863, to the opening
of the Canary Wharf station in 1999, the ten
stamps went on sale earlier this month.
Royal Mail commissioned the set for the
Tubes 150th anniversary.
THRONE INTO CHAOS
Youll have to wait until 2063 to fnd out
who will ascend the English throne.
At the Court of Human Rights in Stras-
bourg an immaculately dressed aristocratic
man and a devout Roman Catholic woman
a few years his senior are both fanked by

not be as absurd as it sounds.
The Succession to the Crown Bill, which
will change the ancient laws governing the
royal line of succession, is already on the
table. When passed it will ensure that the
Duke and Duchess of Cambridges frst child
will reign regardless of his or her gender.
The Queen has already decided that all
the children of the eldest son of the Prince
of Wales should be given the title of Royal
Highness, meaning that a daughter will au-
tomatically become a princess.
But unless the law-makers in Parliament
get it spot-on, any future second-born
son to William and Kate will possibly be
free to challenge his older sisters right to
rule quoting 1,000 years of history as
legal precedent.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY INTERNET
AGED 30
It seems hard to imagine that it was only
30 years ago that the Internet was born on
January 1, 1983. That was the frst time
that the US defence departments Arpanet
network fully switched to use the internet
protocol suite system.
Six years later the World Wide Web would
come into existence and our lives would be
changed for ever.
Mr Chris Edwards, an electronics cor-
respondent for Engineering and Technology
magazine, said: I dont think that anybody
making that switch on the day would have
realised the importance of what they were
doing.
The Internet means that there is nowhere
and no-one in the world that you cant reach
easily and cheaply.
Based on designs by Welsh scientist
Donald Davies, the Arpanet network began
as a military project in the late 1960s. It was
developed at prestigious US universities and
research laboratories, such as the University
of California, Los Angeles, and the Stanford
Research Institute.
Starting in 1973, work on the powerful and
fexible IPS and Transmission Control Proto-
col technology which would change mass
communications got under way. The new
systems were designed to replace the more
vulnerable Network Control Programme used
previously, making sure that the network was
not exposed to a single point of failure.

of interlinked hypertext documents which he

PLAN TO PRIVATISE MOTORWAYS
Ministers are to give the green light to radi-
cal plans to privatise motorways and A-roads
to create new toll roads in London.
The aim is to pump new private-sector
money into the crumbling road network to
ease the growing gridlock at a time when
cash is tight and raising taxes is politically
unacceptable.
Under the shake-up, private frms will run
and manage the roads in the same way that
controversial utility companies run gas and
electricity supplies.
Private companies will pay to run the roads
and be able in return to levy tolls on any extra
capacity such as extra lanes or signifcantly
improved stretches.
A slice of road tax could be used to pay
private frms to run the roads in England and
Wales topped up by the tolls on new roads.
The Treasury is keen because the plan could
save it money, and even earn it billions by
leasing lanes.
But motoring groups fear that the move
will see already heavily-taxed drivers being
feeced even more and will pave the way
for a wider national road pricing scheme in
future, covering all roads.
Under the plans, which were being con-
sidered in October by ministers, drivers could
pay higher road tax for using motorways and
major routes.
Cameras that can read number plates
would catch any drivers using the trunk roads
without having paid up.
SCANDAL OF LEICESTER SQUARE
The 17.1m bill for the makeover of Le-
icester Square has been labelled a scandal,
amid claims that costs overran by an unau-
thorised 1.7m.
Westminster council was accused by its
Labour group of trying to cover up extra costs
at a time of intense pressure on funding for
essential local services. The Conservative-
run authority claims, however, that the rede-
velopment came in 2m under budget and
was a catalyst for hundreds of millions of
pounds of private local investment.
The new-look Leicester Square was re-
opened by Mayor Boris Johnson in May.
The 17-month project involved installing
130,000 square feet of granite paving, seat-
ing and decorative lighting, mirrored stainless
steel railings and gates, together with a new
fountain around the statue of Shakespeare.
Labour group leader Paul Dimoldenberg
said that he has seen internal council docu-
ments revealing that a dispute with Irish con-
tractor SIAC swelled the bill from the original
15.38m to a fnal 17.1m.
According to the report on the work: The
original budget approval for this project was
15.385m. The revised project cost will be
17,108m. Therefore approval is needed to
an additional 1.723m of capital expendi-
ture. The extra spending was due to delays
caused by utility company digging and a
series of disruptive events in the square,
including the flm premiere of Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows: Part II in July.
HALF OF LONDONS POLICE
STATIONS TO SHUT
Nearly half of Londons police stations
face the axe under Scotland Yards latest
plans.
More than 60 would close in a bid to
help plug the Mets 500m budget gap.
Boroughs would each be left with just one
station manned 24 hours a day under the
radical proposals.
Westminster alone would have two, open
all night, although this is down from the cur-
rent six. A leaked Metropolitan Police docu-
ment marked Restricted reveals for the
frst time detailed plans to cut the total number
of stations in the capital from 133 to 71.
The number of 24-hour stations would
fall from 64 to 33, part-time stations from
52 to 33 and volunteer-manned stations
from 17 to 5.
However there would be a large expan-
sion of more than-200 contact points in
supermarkets, libraries and even coffee
shops- where the public could report crime
at certain times.

The crash unfolded at the height of
the morning commute when thousands
of pedestrians in the area were trying to
get to work. The weather at the time was
overcast and misty with fog and poor vis-
ibility, according to the Met Offce weather
forecasting service.
William Belsey, 25, a landscape worker,
also said he heard the helicopter hit the
crane.
Luckily the crane operator was late for
work this morning. He picked a good day
to be late, Belsey said.
Mayor Boris Johnson said the crane
had been secured and was not in danger
of collapsing.
British aviation authorities had issued a
notice to airmen warning pilots about the
crane, which extended to 770 feet above
ground. The crane is lit at night, and police
said investigators would look at whether
the light was faulty.

CAR COMPANY Jaguar Land Rover says
its adding 800 jobs in Britain as it enjoys
a big boost in sales in China, which is now
the luxury auto brands largest market.
Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement
late last month that it had sold nearly
72,000 vehicles in China last year, more
than the roughly 68,000 vehicles it sold in
its UK home market.
The company said that sales were up 30
percent globally despite the uncertain econ-
omy, with big increases also recorded in the
United States, Russia, and Germany.

AT BELFAST City Hall, the fagpole is
bare and the streets are flled with night-
time fear and fury.
These are dangerous times in Northern
Ireland, a long-divided corner of the Unit-
ed Kingdom that is supposed to be at peace
after decades of unrest thanks to its hard-
won cease-fres and a Catholic-Protestant
government. But the lowering of a single
Union Jack has exposed a society still split
between two competing identities.
Last month, Catholics who narrowly
outnumber Protestants on the council
voted to reduce the flying of the flag
to just 18 offcial days a year, ending a
century when the British national symbol
favored by Protestants few uninterrupted
year-round.
Catholics billed the move as a compro-
mise, since they wanted the fag removed
completely. Last month, the fag futtered
for the frst time since the vote to mark
the 31st birthday of Kate, Duchess of
Cambridge, but was taken down again
at sunset.
RESPONDED
Protestant hard-liners have responded
with nightly illegal street blockades that
often have degenerated into street battles
between riot police and masked protesters
armed with everything from sledgeham-
mers to snooker balls. Police say 66 of-
fcers have been wounded, including six
during just one week of last month, and
more than 100 rioters arrested.
Nobody seems to know how, or when,
the strife will end. While Northern Ire-
land suffers intercommunal confict each
summer because of traditional Protestant
marches, this is the frst time that Northern
Ireland has suffered a month straight of
angry civil disturbances in the winter.
CONFLICT
At the heart of the resumed confict is
the rapid change in Northern Irelands
population balance and political system.
Northern Ireland was created as a
Protestant-majority state in the UK shortly
before the overwhelmingly Catholic rest of
Ireland won independence in 1922. But the
days of Protestant domination of politics
and the police are distant memories.
The latest census published last month
shows Catholics in the majority in Belfast
and gaining throughout Northern Ireland.
The peace process has produced a new
system in which a former Irish Republican
Army commander now jointly leads the
government, and a decade of preferential
Catholic recruitment has produced a more
Irish-oriented police force that Protestant
militants increasingly view as the enemy.
TOUCHSTONE
The vote on the fag was a touchstone.
It transformed Protestant and unionist frus-
tration into outright anger, said Mike Nes-
bitt, leader of the No 2 Protestant-backed
party, the Ulster Unionists. Even if you
put the fag back up 365 days a year and I
accept its not going to happen that would
not fx the anger on the streets.
Many shop and restaurant owners in
downtown Belfast are fuming, too about
scared-off customers, bills they cant pay
and a political culture that wreaks eco-
nomic havoc over matters of symbolism.
They blame Catholic politicians for pick-
ing a needless fght right before Christmas,
and blame Protestants for infaming mobs
with no ability to rein them back in.
But Peter Robinson, the Protestant frst
minister of the government who still backs
the protests so long as they remain peace-
ful, insists hes done all he can.

A BRITISH judge last month sentenced
a woman he called a devoted and loving
mother to at least 17 years in prison for
beating her son to death after he failed to
memorize passages from the Quran.
A jury at Cardiff Crown Court in Wales
convicted 33-year-old Sara Ege last month
of murdering seven-year-old Yaseen and
burning his body to destroy the evidence.
Judge Wyn Williams said Ege beat
Yaseen repeatedly with a stick over several
months, causing internal injuries.
He said that, on the day he died in 2010,
Yaseen had been kept home from school
to memorize verses from the Muslim holy
book, and that his failure was the trigger
for the beating that killed him.
INDIA-BORN
The judge agreed with defense argu-
ments saying India-born Eges state of
mind was a devoted and loving mother
who suffered from depression and had
been a victim of domestic violence.
Still, he said, she subjected her son to
prolonged cruelty.
Ege admitted killing her son in a confes-
sion taped by police, but later retracted it
and blamed her husband, Yousef. He was
tried and acquitted on a charge of failing
to prevent his sons death.
Ege sobbed as the judge passed sen-
tence. Williams said the 2-1/2 years she
had spent in secure psychiatric units since
her arrest would count toward her 17-year
minimum sentence.

AFP, Sandiford said she was fling
an appeal against the decision of the
Denpasar district court on January
22, without giving other details.

obokan prison in Denpasar where
Sandiford is being held, told AFP that
the Briton was stressed and always
crying.

ON JANUARY 2, 2013, Secretary of Home-
land Security Janet Napolitano announced the
implementation date of a procedural change
aimed at reducing the time US citizens are
separated from immediate relatives who are
seeking to become lawful permanent resi-
dents. As discussed in an earlier article, prior
to this change, which goes into effect March
4, 2013, a foreign national who entered the
US without inspection or illegally was
required to depart the US and apply for an im-
migrant visa green card at the US consulate
in their home country. This procedure often
resulted in the separation of families for an
extended period of time.
Many visa applicants faced these delays
because the departure required to complete
the visa process abroad often triggered a
three- or 10-year bar from reentry into the
US (depending on the length of unlawful pres-
ence). So, as the applicant is attempting to
follow the process required to obtain the visa,
they are simultaneously putting themselves
at risk of being separated from their families
for up to a decade.
Most applicants apply for a waiver of
these bars on reentry by demonstrating
their absence would create an extreme
hardship on a US citizen spouse or parent.
If the applicant is unable to overcome this
high standard, they are forced to remain out
of the US for the duration of their bar. This
process often creates the dilemma for US
citizen children who are faced with leaving
their country of citizenship to be with their
parents or to remain in the US without means
of support.
The new details released last month will
now allow some visa applicants in this situ-
ation to apply for a waiver while they remain

in the United States. If the waiver is approved,
the applicant would then depart the US to at-
tend her immigrant visa interview with an ap-
proved waiver in-hand. This process would
cut down on the amount of time families are
separated in addition to eliminating the un-
certainty of the process. This signals a rare,
positive shift in the way USCIS administers
the laws that are currently in place.
We do not anticipate this change to have
a large affect on the way family-based
immigrant visas for Brits are processed,
although we have seen this problem on oc-
casion. The more common example we see
for family-based petitions from the UK is for
the foreign national to enter the US on holiday
with a visa waiver and apply for a green card
after their authorized stay has expired. In the
great majority of those cases, a relatively
straight forward adjustment of status ap-
plication can be fled and processed while the
UK national remains in the US. The critical
requirement in this type of case is that the
applicant must demonstrate a lawful entry
which virtually all Brits can. It is not fatal if
the applicants lawful status expires IF they
become the spouse of a US citizen. Cases
that can beneft from this new procedure
involve those where a lawful entry cannot be
proven rendering a domestic adjustment of
status application not an option.
Sainsburys Celebrate Record Christmas Sales
WITH TOTAL sales up 3.3 percent on
last years third quarter, Sainsburys
the supermarket chain were very happy
with their festive season.
The retailer, which sits in third posi-
tion behind Tesco and Asda, said Christ-
mas was the 32nd consecutive quarter
of like-for-like sales growth.
It said stores open over a year saw
sales rise 0.9 percent, in the 14 weeks
to January 5.
Sainsburys said it served a record
number of customers over the festive
period, with the week before December
25 its busiest ever.
16m of sales were achieved in one
hour alone, between 12pm and 1pm on
Sunday, December 23.
In total it said rang up more than
100m in sales on Christmas Eve. All
fgures did not include fuel.
The performance confrms the pres-
sure on smaller rival Morrisons, which
disclosed a 2.5 percent slide in Christ-
mas sales earlier last month.

Court: BA Discriminated Against Christian Staffer

BRITISH AIRWAYS discriminated
against a devoutly Christian airline em-
ployee by making her remove a crucifx
at work, Europes highest court ruled
last month. But the court rejected dis-
crimination cases by three other Christian
claimants.
BA check-in clerk Nadia Eweida
sparked a national debate in Britain over
religion in public life when she was sent
home in November 2006 for refusing to
comply with rules banning employees
from wearing visible religious symbols.
BA eventually changed its policy and
Eweida returned to work, but she pursued
a claim of religious discrimination, seek-
ing damages and compensation for lost
wages.
British courts backed BA, but Eweida
went to the European Court of Human
Rights.
The Strasbourg, France-based court
ruled that the airlines policy amounted
to an interference with her right to manifest
her religion.
Eweida, 60, said when she heard the
verdict I was jumping for joy and saying
thank you Jesus.

par with other col-

visibly and not be
ashamed of their
faith, she said.
Prime Minister
David Cameron tweeted that he was de-
lighted that principle of wearing religious
symbols at work has been upheld.
REMOVE
But the court ruled against Shirley
Chaplin, a nurse who was told to remove
a crucifx necklace at work. The judges
said Chaplins employer banned neck-
laces on health and safety grounds, and
so asking her to remove the symbol was
not excessive.
Chaplin said she was very disap-
pointed by the ruling.
But I am gratifed that the cross has
been recognized as a Christian symbol,
she said. I think that will give a lot of
Christian workers good heart that they can
show their faith in the workplace.
The judges also struck down claims by
Lillian Ladele, a local authority registrar
who said her Christian faith prevented her
from overseeing same-sex civil partner-
ships, and marriage counselor Gary Mc-
Farlane, who refused to offer sex therapy
to gay couples.
ENTITLED
In both cases, the court said employ-
ers had been entitled to strike a balance
between claimants rights to manifest their
religious beliefs and the rights of others not
to suffer discrimination.
Shami Chakrabarti, director of human
rights group Liberty, said the verdicts were
an excellent result for equal treatment,
religious freedom and common sense.
She said that Eweida had just as much
a right to express her faith as a Sikh man
in a turban or a Muslim woman with a
headscarf.
However the court was also right to
uphold judgments in other cases that em-
ployers can expect staff not to discriminate
in the discharge of duties at work.
The courts rulings are binding on the 47
member states of the Council of Europe,
the continents human rights watchdog.
Politician Slams Lie Detector Fraud Tests
A POLITICIAN has resigned over a county
councils decision to use voice analysis
technology that some liken to lie detector
tests on people claiming a tax discount.
Fiona Ferguson, leader of the Con-
servative group on Cornwall Council in
southwestern England, says she has a
fundamental ethical objection to this use
of the technology.
It is clearly right that Cornwall Council
takes a strong line against people who de-
liberately mis-claim tax benefts but in this
case I am more concerned about the impact
on the vast majority of honest claimants,
she said in a letter last month resigning her
post in the county Cabinet.
The council said it had hired private
outsourcing frm Capita to use specialist
technology to assess people claiming a
discount for one-adult households. The
council says it hopes to save 1m currently
lost to fraud.
EMOTIONS
Capita claims its voice risk analysis
technology can identify the effects of
emotions, stress, cognitive activity and
other factors through micro-changes in the
callers voice frequencies.
The system was given a trial run by
Britains Department for Work and Pen-
sions several years ago, but a 2010 report
concluded that evidence of the technologys
effectiveness was not strong enough to
recommend its use.
Civil liberties group Big Brother Watch
said it had not seen evidence that the
technology was being used by many local
authorities.
Its deputy director, Emma Carr, said
Cornwall Council had completely wasted
money on an illiberal and unproven tech-
nology.

AS POLITICIANS thoughts begin to focus
seriously on the next General Election, a great
big storm is looming into view, threatening
to distort the whole pattern of voting: the UK
Independence Party
In fact, Ukip as it is generally known
has been around since 1993 when it was
fung together by Alan Sked as a protest party
against Britain signing the Maastricht Treaty.
It skulked among the political undergrowth for
a number of years before it was really noticed.
In 1999, its current leader, Nigel Farage, was
one of three Ukippers elected to the European
Parliament, an organisation he has since
graced without a break or much very onerous
in the way of attendance.
Late on in 2004, Ukip abruptly attracted
a high-profle leadership contender former
Labour MP and TV personality, Robert Kilroy-
Silk. This followed Ukips success in winning
12 seats in the European elections that year
and coming third in the national polls. The
oleaginous Kilroy-Silk complete with orange
tan made a pitch for the leaders job. His
campaign lasted for almost the entire month
Farage announced that he was proud to be
odd. To take up his words, I am here as a
campaigner. I want to free this country from
the European Union. He added that Cameron
was insulting large numbers of Conservative
voters who worried about Europe, immigra-
tion and wind farms.
Im not quite sure where wind farms
come into the political equation. They seem
decidedly apolitical to me but in Ukips world
great swathes of voters are waiting for a
politician to commit to scrapping the things.
In November John Hayes, for instance, the
Conservative Energy Minister, earned the
plaudits of Ukip when he proclaimed he was
against wind farms sprouting across our
green and pleasant land.
It is an interesting crib from Blakes
Jerusalem. After Danny Boyles spectacular
opening night of the Olympics, anyone who
can claim to be building Jerusalem, be it only
by denying the countryside wind farms, will
reap a large electoral beneft.
TARGETS
One of Ukips targets is to come top in the
European elections next year. It is a target
they may well attain but you may wonder
why: their 12 MEPs in the current European
parliament have tabled no reports, 11 have
tabled no opinions, nine have signed no
written declarations or motions and their
attendance rate puts them at the bottom of
all the 753 MEPs.
The Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies
has it about right when he says that Ukips
representatives reduce our countrys reputa-
tion to that of a laughing stock. The nearest
thing to a Ukip MEP you are likely see is an
empty seat.
They do, however, take their pay and their
expenses, amounting to 18m, thereby free-

have no MPs at present and they probably
wont get one in 2015 but they can cause
a lot of mischief. But probably their worst
infuence is upon Cameron who is obliged
to keep sounding euro-sceptic to stop Ukip
stealing too many votes

Bercow. One unwritten rule of the political
game is that you do not challenge the Speaker
of the House of Commons but outraged
constitutionalists need not have bothered
for Farage failed to get in by a considerable
margin.
He did, however, hit the headlines on the
election day literally: by surviving a plane
crash. He and a pilot were towing a banner
round the sky drumming up voters when the
plane fell to earth. He survived with a broken
sternum and a couple of bust ribs and on
recovery was re-elected Ukip leader.
POPULARTY
With the advent of coalition politics, or
more particularly the entry of the Lib Dems
into government, Ukip suddenly found
popularity despite itself. As parties such as
the Liberals and the Monster Raving Loonies
have known for years, if you stand for noth-
ing, you will always be rewarded with protest
votes. And there are plenty of those especially
nowadays when you cant even vote for the
Liberals since they are in government.
The nice, plausible Mr Farage led a party
which stood for everything. Getting out of
the European Union was politically his most
popular policy. Even the Lib Dems didnt
stand for that. But Ukip with its populist Daily
Mail right-wing agenda has been getting up
Tory noses for a number of years. Michael
Howard once described them as cranks and
gadfies and back in 2006 David Cameron
was even harsher calling them fruitcakes,
loonies and closet racists, mostly.
Last month the Coalition Government
marked the halfway point of its time in offce
with Cameron and Clegg renewing their vows
just as Farage was trumpeting the accession
of Ukip to third party status, having soared to
16 percent in the opinion polls, the Lib Dems
seemingly facing extinction on six percent.
MAJORITY
On current calculations, if this Ukip sup-
port holds up, it will spell the end of Clegg
and Camerons political careers and hand a
three-fgure majority to Ed Milibands Labour
Party in 2015. Not that this seems at all upset-
ting for Nigel Farage.
In fact, he is quite proud of his idiosyn-
cratic attitudes. After the Coalition leaders had
restated their intention of being a Ronseal al-
liance, ie where the parties agree to do what
it says on the tin (whatever that means),

IRS Sympathy
But Not For You!
LAST MONTH the National Taxpayer Advo-
cate (a very useful position, why isnt there
someone like this in the UK?) issued her 2012
Annual Report to Congress. It is pretty long, and
members of Congress get an abridged version,
but I imagine they get abridged versions of
almost everything! She reviews the past years
activities of the IRS as they affect taxpayers and
makes suggestions for improvements.
The review centers around what the report
calls Most Serious Problems, and of these,
two concerned international issues, which is
both discouraging (because they are problems)
and encouraging (because theyve been rec-
ognized). The format of the report provides the
IRS with a chance to respond to each issue,
but the Taxpayer Advocate also comments on
their response, so it can be quite illuminating
about the IRS thinking on particular issues
and, it has to be said, how this diverges from
the experience of the rest of us!
One interesting fgure from the report is that
64 percent of all international US taxpayers
(defned as those living outside the US) fled
returns showing adjusted gross income of
$25,000 or less. I understand this includes US
taxpayers living in parts of the world with lower
costs of living, but I suspect more of them are
living in European or English-speaking coun-
tries. Those who are living in other countries
may be more likely to be employed and there-
fore receiving expatriate-level salaries. They are
unlikely to be included in this 64 percent.
The thought therefore crosses my mind (call
me cynical, but there it is!) that $25,000 is not
a lot to live on in most countries, and these
US taxpayers may be only declaring their US-
source income, which would explain why their
adjusted gross income is so low. The argument
they would presumably use for declaring only
US-source income is that their foreign income
is taxed in their country of residence. This jus-
tifcation is also offered by many US residents
with foreign income for not declaring it on their
US Returns (you may be one of them!). It is not
well-received by the IRS!
If you have been reading my column for a
few months, you will (hopefully!) have taken on
board the fact that the existence of a double tax
treaty does not enable a taxpayer to choose
where income is taxed. The harshness with
which the IRS is dealing with US-resident
taxpayers omissions of foreign income would
seem to contrast with the sympathy being
meted out to US citizens living overseas.
I have never been able to understand the
rationale behind this. If you are a US citizen or
permanent resident and you have been brought
up with the concept of worldwide taxation, the
tax amnesia that descends when you leave
the US is inexplicable, particularly since US
tax advisers overseas tend to know what they
are doing. Most of them were trained in the Big
Four accounting frms or their predecessors,
and know about Foreign Bank Account Reports
and information fling. If you compare that to the
level of knowledge of most US-based advisers
on US international tax issues, the sympathy
would have to come back here rather than rest
with US taxpayers overseas.
Rant over! But I do mention these points to
anyone from the IRS who may have any infu-
ence, so I keep batting on your behalf!

THE LEADER of Britains far-right English Defense League
party has been jailed after pleading guilty to using someone elses
passport to enter the United States.
Stephen Lennon whose criminal convictions previously had
led to his being denied entry to the US used a passport in the
name of Andrew McMaster to board a Virgin Atlantic Flight
from London to New York on September 10.
The 30-year-old somehow managed to leave the airport and enter the US, stay-
ing one night before returning to the UK on his own passport. He was arrested in
October.
His true identity was discovered when customs offcials took his fngerprints.
Judge Alistair McCreath noted Lennons tendency to use aliases in sentencing
the EDL leader to 10 months in jail.

WHEN A bad news character enters Albert
Square, things can go only one of two ways:
If they turn out to be popular, they will get a
personality transplant, showing a vulnerable
and likable side that allows them to stay
around for a while or they stay evil and get
carried out of the Square feet frst. And so it
was always destined to be with the evil the
eeeeville Derek Branning, but frst
Phil continues his plan to snatch Lexi right
out from under Lola (and grandpa Billy) by
tricking them into thinking he only wants to
help by fostering her. And he torments Jack
by telling him Sharon will soon be his. This
prompts Jack to propose to Sharon on the
same day he does. She accepts Jack and
now Phil has cut her out, and hes got Lexi,
and is controlling Lolas access to her (with-
out Sharon there to run interference)
Joey and cousin Lauren cant fght the
feeling anymore and start sleeping together,
but their family fnds out and works to keep
them apart Max throws Tanya a surprise
wedding but as Tanya stands there in her
gown, who shows up at the door? Surprise!
Its Maxs wife! Yes, he has a wife he mar-
ried when Tanya tossed him out last year,
and now Derek summoned her to get back
at Tanya. Max thought all the money hed
been giving to Derek was to pay her off for
a divorce, but Derek just kept it and lied to
Max
Kat and Alfe are trying to make things
work or maybe just making a show out of
trying to make things work but Kats recent
affair is eating at him, and her secret lovers
continual harassment keeps wearing her
down. She begins the affair again paying
no attention at all to the millions of people
screaming at their TVs. We dont know who
it is. We only know she keeps getting texts,
calls, fowers, etc from him despite continu-
ally telling him its over. And Alfe is upset
that she wont say who it is. But one night in
the Vic (where else) he gets rumbled its
Derek. Derek? Seriously Kat? Derek? Alfe
tosses her out and shes got nowhere to go,
and who takes her in? Derek. He wants to
start a life with her but she insists she still
loves Alfe and is beside herself. Kat begs
him to let Alfe hear her voicemail, telling
him to leave her alone, and he says he will
but instead plays Alfe a different, older one
where shes making plans to see him. Alfe
is done with Kat and moves Roxy in upstairs
at the Vic
Ever since Tanya found out that Mum Cora
had an older daughter that she gave up for
adoption, shes been curious. Now without
Coras consent, she goes looking for her and
fnds her and is in for a shock: Shes black. It
was the prejudice of the day that made Cora
give her up and she;s been haunted by it ever
since. The baby wasnt haunted though; she
was adopted by a nice family, is a school
principal and seems to have turned out better
than Coras other two daughters! The reunion
WEDDINGS IN soap l and never room
smoothly and this month there are two,
both with the same Corrie couple involved.
En route to meet groom Nick for wedding
number one, bride Leanne calls at Peters
house to offer herself to him, just for old
times sake. Peter is tempted, oh yes he is
tempted, but something has changed, some-
thing has happened, someone has returned
from Los Angeles by plane. Yes, Carlas
back and Peters head has been turned once
again. So Leanne hops back into her taxi after
being snubbed by Peter, straightens her tiara
and the cab drives on to the wedding venue
where Nicks waiting for his bride.
But as theyre just about to exchange
vows, Eva pipes up from the pew. She cant
keep quiet that one, not with a crush the size
of Salford shes got for Nick. She tells the
congregation that Leanne offered herself to
Peter who didnt want her and now shes
settling for second-best Nick. Well, thats it.
There are tears and tantrums and the wed-
dings off, everyone goes home. Everyone
that is except for Nick and his sister-in-law
Kylie who end up using the honeymoon
suite to comfort each together. And now
Kylies pregnant theyre very fertile up
north and when Nick walks up the aisle
with Leanne for a second time, after she
begs his forgiveness, this time, Nicks got
the knowledge that he could be the dad of
Kylies little baby.
Ooh, it doesnt bode well.
Over at Underworld, Robs cooking the
books to make the knicker factory appear
less valuable than it is so he can go in
there with a low offer to buy it from Carla.
She knows Robs up to summat and bans
him from the factory but that doesnt stop
her bad brother from stealing the business
from under her nose and behind her back
and breaking into the offce to take all her
fles. Carlas left pondering on pants and
wonders whats going on in gussets as
Rob moves above his station into a fat in
Victoria Court.
Meanwhile, Fizs boiler breaks down and
she asks Tyrone to fx it. However, he doesnt
do it properly as hes not qualifed and it starts
leaking carbon monoxide into Fizs house. She
thinks shes coming down with a bug but ends
up in hospital in a coma before making a full
recovery and being sent home. Dont things
move fast in soap? Tyrone cant admit he was
the one who fxed Fizs boiler because if Kirsty
fnds out, hell have another poisonous boiler
to deal with. Tommy takes the blame for his
mate Tyrones mistake and gets a grilling from
the men in suits from Health and Safety.
Elswhere, Lewis starts his campaign
to get his hands on Gails assets. He tells
her he loves her, he kisses her, he snogs
her, as the nation collectively hides behind
cushions on our sofas. Lewis brings in his
mate Patrick whos all talk about an Italian
hotel job for Lewis but he tells Gail he cant
go and leave her, not now hes found her,
the one true love of his life. And Gail believes
him, she falls for him, hook, line and sinker
as Lewis reels Gail in with his every hook,
lie and stinker.
And fnally this week, Sophie and her
physiotherapist Jenna kiss on the sofa after
admitting they really like each other, despite
Jenna having reservations about what this
relationship could do to her career if her
bosses fnd out. Problem is, Sophies dad
Kevin also likes Jenna and isnt best pleased
when he walks in and discovers Jenna and
Sophie having a snog. Sadly for Jenna,
Kevins jealousy gets the better of him and he
dobs Jenna in at work, saying shes abusing
young Sophie. Oh Kevin, oh dear.

Derek entered the Square last year, terror-
izing Pat on her deathbed, and hes done the
same to just about everyone else in Walford.
With everyone fnally turning against him,
including (fnally!) his own brothers, its time
for him to make his exit. But he wasnt hit by
a car or shot or tossed off a bridge or hit over
the head with an iron or didnt trip over a toy
truck and tumble down the stairs: After a big
argument, he had an apparent heart attack
in the street, witnessed by his brothers Max
and Jack, and Kat, who all stood there and
let him die without calling 911 or helping him
in any way. The End

EXPLORING London is always great. I love get-
ting lost, and fnding new places in the city. On
the way to Medieval Times, (dont expect the
grand US one with horses) I stumbled across
Saint Kathrine Docks, it feels like Monte Carlo,
it is a great little gem. In the heart of London,
and yet a million miles away from a bustling
city, it was exquisite. The boats are fabulous,
Saint Dickens Inn was my favorite fnd. It is a
rebuilt 18th century pub, covered in fowers and
history, what a great little place to get away.
Trying new things is one of my favorite
things to do, so, a few weekends ago we tried
indoor skiing in Milton Keynes! It was so fun,
the prices were great and skiing indoors was a
totally new experience. While the runs arent as
long, it was really entertaining, much cheaper
than the alps and less travel time. Our group
then went back into London and decided to go
to the theatre. A great little tip, if you are open to
what you see you can get dirt cheap tickets. If
you show up at the theatre an hour before show
times, they will usually not always give you
a great discount.
In the next few weekends, preferably, when
I am sans cast, and able to walk again, I will be
planning a trip to Powys, Wales. It looks like
heaven on earth, it is classifed as a preserved
county, and apparently the happiest place in
the UK. The scenery seems to be out of this
world, sweeping green valleys, mountains, yes
I said mountains, and crystal clear lakes. There
is even a castle, the villages seems like a great,
off the beaten track, vacation area, hopefully
not overrun by tourists.
Good old Christmas break thank good-
ness for long ones.
Coming home is always great, breaking my
leg not so much, paying for the hospital visit,
with no insurance in the USA, even worse.
Why could I not have broken it in the UK???
Happy New Year I am about to owe the city of
Las Vegas $10,000. Oh well I guess I have to
go back and win a few poker tournaments. If
my professor Dr Wollard is reading this, I was
studying while I was in Vegas, I promise...
I have spent mine in the mountains and in
Vegas, poor me Now it is time to study
like crazy.
My fight home was an absolute nightmare.
I was delayed, hungover and irritated. The
airlines however saw no problem with a seven
hour layover, and felt that I was being ungrateful
when they offered to re-route me on a fight with
a stop or two. We discussed my bad attitude,
and ways to fx it, they didnt like my sugges-
tions, I was less fond of theirs. The rambunc-
tious chat ended with us mutually parting ways
and a few lovely four letter words.

Hackers Sentenced For
Michael Jackson Music Theft
A PAIR of UK hackers has been sentenced
to 100 hours of community service for the
theft of unreleased Michael Jackson tracks
from Sony Music Entertainment.
Officials say that music aficionados
James Marks and James McCormick used
their home computers to break into Sonys
US servers and scour them for Jackson-
related material. Britains Serious and
Organized Crime Agency says the pair
downloaded nearly 8,000 fles, completed
or partial tracks, artwork, and videos.
Marks, 27 and McCormick, 26 were ar-
rested in May 2011 after Sony alerted UK
law enforcement to the breach. Chat logs
recovered from their computers showed
that they planned to sell or trade some
of the fles.
They were handed suspended sentences
and ordered to do community service last
month.

UK Wont Let British Veterans
Accept Russian Medal

REAY CLARKE, who risked his life on
World War II Arctic convoys, felt snubbed
by Britains decision last month to keep
him and other veterans from accepting
bravery medals offered by Russia.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Of-
fce said British sailors cannot accept the
Ushakov Medal because they are in line to
get a medal from the British government,
and also because the events took place
more than fve years ago.
I honestly feel sore about it, said
Clarke, 89. I think its disgraceful that
we cant just say yes to the Russians
and tell them to go ahead and issue
the medal. I think they are kind and
thoughtful to remember what we
did. We should just say, Thank you
very much.
It is not surprising that the Russian
government wants to honor again
the sailors who participated in the
convoys, which helped bring vital
equipment to Soviet troops fghting
a desperate battle against Hitlers
troops on the eastern front.
DELIVERED
The weapons they delivered, including
more than 7,500 fghter planes and 5,000
anti-tank guns, helped turn back Hitlers
invading forces, altering the course of the
war, said Jacky Brookes, a manager of the
Russia Arctic Convoy Museum Project,
which plans to build a museum at the spot
in northwest Scotland where the convoys
were based.
There were some 3,000 casualties,
she said. Winston Churchill called it the
worst journey in the world. Hitler was keen
to sink as many of them as he could. It was
an awful experience they were attacked
by U-boats, and ships, and from the air as
well. Plus the weather was atrocious. A lot
of people just perished from the cold.
Brookes also feels the government
should have allowed the men to receive
the Ushakov Medal. She said about 400
are still alive.
Prime Minister David Cameron an-
nounced last month a medal will be created
and awarded to veterans who were active
on the convoys.
But Clarke frets that many veterans
will pass away while the details are
worked out.
Hes taken an awful long time, he
said. There arent many of us left.

Recession Fears Grow As
UK Manufacturing Drops

CONCERN IS growing that the British
economy may be headed back into reces-
sion after statistics released last month
showed a surprise drop in manufacturing
activity.
The Offce for National Statistics said
manufacturing output fell by 0.3 percent
between October and November, far off
analysts expectations for an increase of
0.5 percent.
Britains economy has only just emerged
from a double-dip recession in the third
quarter of 2012, when it recorded one
percent growth. But it seems unable to
make a lasting recovery and experts say it
is slowing considerably.
Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist
at Capital Economics said Novembers
manufacturing fgures provided yet more
evidence that the economy probably con-
tracted in the fourth quarter of last year.
The National Institute of Economic and
Social Research, a leading think tank, es-
timated last month that Britains economy
shrank by 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter.
That would leave gross domestic product
fat overall in 2012.
If the British economy were to shrink
again in the frst three months of 2013, it
would be back in recession, technically
defned as two consecutive quarters of
economic contraction.
WARNED
Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank
of England, warned in November that the
economy could shrink in the last three
months of 2012 as a boost from the Sum-
mer Olympics is reversed and that growth
would remain sluggish into 2013.
British manufacturers, it seems, are
being hurt by weak investment and lower
public spending.
Furthermore, consumers purchasing
power is coming under renewed pressure
from a move back up in inflation and
muted earnings growth, said Howard
Archer, the chief UK economist for IHS
Global Insight. On top of this, a still
uncertain and diffcult economic environ-
ment risks some orders being delayed or
even cancelled.
Archer said the United States recent
budget deal to avoid the so-called fis-
cal cliff and improvements in eurozone
fnancial markets did offer some hope for
British manufacturing exports.
But it may take some time before the
increase in confdence in fnancial markets
translates to greater demand for goods and
new jobs.
Underlining the pressure felt by UK
manufacturers, Japanese automaker Honda
announced it would cut about one in four
jobs at its western England factory.
Honda Motor Europe cited poor sales
across the continent as the reason for cut-
ting 800 positions from its 3,500-strong
workforce in Swindon. The plant makes
the Civic, Jazz and CR-V models.
UK Offcials Charge
Eight In $55m Bank
Corruption Case
PROSECUTORS say that eight people
have been charged in connection with a
roughly 35m corruption case involving
what was once one of Britains biggest
banking groups.
The Crown Prosecution Service said
in a statement late last month that po-
lice charged two former employees of
the Halifax Bank of Scotland, Lynden
Scourfeld and Mark Dobson, with steer-
ing loans through a business consultancy
in return for corrupt gifts.
Three members of the consultancy
David Mills, Michael Bancroft, and
John Cartright face fraud charges.
Mills, Bancroft, and Scourfield also
face a charge of money laundering, as
do their wives, Jacqueline Scourfeld,
Alison Mills, and Beverley Bancroft.
The Halifax Bank of Scotland, an
early victim of the global fnancial crisis,
was absorbed by Lloyds Banking Group
PLC in 2009.
Bank Of England Leaves
Rates Unchanged
THE BANK of England has left its base
interest rate and its monetary stimulus
program unchanged, as widely anticipated
by analysts.
The central banks Monetary Policy
Committee left the key rate at 0.5 percent,
where it has been since March 2009, at its
monthly policy meeting last month.
The Bank of Englands stimulus pro-
gram, called quantitative easing, was also
not increased from its current 375bn. The
program involves purchases of govern-
ment bonds from banks to increase the
amount of money in the economy and
favor an increase in lending.
A TOP British counterterrorism detective
was found guilty last month of trying to
sell information to one of Rupert Mur-
dochs tabloids, becoming the frst person
convicted on charges related to Britains
phone-hacking scandal since a police in-
vestigation was reopened in early 2011.
Detective Chief Inspector April Casburn
was charged with misconduct for phoning
the News of the World tabloid and offering
to pass on information about whether Lon-
dons police force would reopen its stalled
phone-hacking investigation.
Prosecutors said the tabloid did not print
a story based on her call and no money
changed hands but she had committed a
gross breach of the public trust by of-
fering to sell the information.
Casburn, 53, also was accused of trying
to ruin the phone-hacking inquiry which
centered on Murdoch journalists at the
now-defunct News of the World by leak-
ing information to the press.
TERRORISM
A key witness testifed that Casburn
wanted to torpedo the hacking inquiry
because she feared it would drain re-
sources from the fght against terrorism.
The witness said she also was upset about
the purported pressure being put on pros-
ecutors by John Prescott, a deputy prime
minister under Tony Blair who had been
a hacking victim.
Prosecution lawyer Greg McGill said
Casburn was guilty of a very serious
offense.
The Metropolitan Police said in a state-
ment that selling confdential information
to journalists for personal gain would not
be tolerated and that Casburn had abused
her police position.

Nine Found Guilty Of Fixing Horse Races

THREE professional footballers were among nine
people banned from involvement in British horse rac-
ing for a combined total of 70 years last month after
an investigation into an elaborate fxing scandal.
The case centered on allegations that jockey
Andrew Heffernan, who has recently been riding in
Australia, fxed races in Britain between November
1, 2010, and March 31, 2011.
Heffernan was banned for 15 years after being
found guilty of receiving bribes, giving inside in-
formation and preventing three horses Wanchai
Whisper, Gallantry and Silver Guest from running
at their best.
Ipswich striker Michael Chopra and former Man-
chester United midfelder Mark Wilson were each
disqualifed for 10 years for offering bribes to Heffer-
nan and placing bets based on information provided
by the jockey that his horse would lose. Doncaster
midfelder James Coppinger was given a three-year
ban for the latter charge.
Five other unlicensed individuals Paul Garner,
Yogesh Joshee, Douglas Shelley, Kelly Inglis and
Pravin Shingardia were also found in breach of
racing rules after a four-day hearing.
The fndings of the disciplinary panel confrm that
an elaborate network of corruption has been identifed
and successfully prosecuted, said Adam Brickell,
the director of integrity, legal and risk of the British
Horseracing Authority. Investigations of this scale
are extremely complex, especially when we are faced
with a lack of cooperation, evasion, and untruthful
accounts from many of those being investigated.
The 29-year-old Chopra, who used to play for
Newcastle and Cardiff, now plays for Ipswich in the
second-tier League Championship.
He did not give evidence in the hearing, which
took place from January 14-17, because he couldnt
afford to pay the legal fees. He has admitted to having
a gambling addiction.
Rolls-Royce To Cut Defense Jobs At UK Plant
ROLLS-ROYCE said last month that it is plan-
ning to reduce its defense operations at one of its
British plants a move that a union said would
result in the loss of some 400 jobs.
The plant at Ansty, near Coventry, employs
about 800 people and handles the reft and
repair of airplane and marine engines. The
company said that its civil aerospace business
at the factory will not be affected.
Britains largest trade union, Unite, said
staff was informed of the companys plans last
month. It claimed that the closure is proposed
to take place in the next few years, and blamed
the British governments cuts to the national
defense budget for the decision.
Rolls-Royce said in a statement that it hoped
to make the changes without compulsory
redundancies.
It did not elaborate on the decision but said:
In a large and complex company, there is a
constant need to align resources and costumer
demand.
The frm employs 22,000 people in Britain.
UK Considers Preventative
Drugs For Breast Cancer
BRITAINS National Health Service may soon of-
fer women at high risk of developing breast cancer
drugs normally used to treat the disease as a pre-
vention strategy.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical
Excellence last month announced draft guidelines
that would make the drugs available.
A final decision is expected this spring after
medical groups, charities and patients organization
respond to the proposal.
The proposal suggests that tamoxifen or ralox-
ifene should be used by women found at high risk
of developing the disease.
Clinical trials have shown the drugs can be effec-
tive in cutting breast cancer rates, and the medica-
tions are used both to treat and to prevent the disease
in other countries, including the United States.
Initial response from charities and patients
groups to the proposal has been favorable.
The charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer called
the move an historic step in the fght against the
deadly disease.
Specialist nurse Jackie Harris with the Breast
Cancer Care charity said the proposal could be
very good news for women with a family his-
tory of breast cancer, but doctors cautioned that
the drugs cannot be viewed as a vaccine against
breast cancer.
New Haul Of Anglo-Saxon
Gold Declared Treasure
ITS OFFICIAL: Some of the 90 pieces of
gold and silver found in central England
last year have formally been declared to
be treasure.
Archaeologists found the haul in the
same English field where an amateur
treasure-hunter in 2009 discovered the
largest fnd of Anglo-Saxon gold, silver
and precious stones ever recorded.
South Staffordshire coroner Andrew
Haigh confrmed last month that most of
the new haul is treasure, meaning that it is
at least 300 years old and is made up of at
least 10 percent precious metal.

This is the story/history of 1,000 years
of a curse on the monarchy that dates
back to Canute in 1016 and comes into
modern day to Elizabeth II.
Everyone always thinks about the
power and wealth that comes with the
crown, but not many really think about
the consequences. Somebody be it a
rival, family member that feels snubbed,
an enemy or just a crazy person will
most certainly try and kill you at some
point. Hopefully you can protect yourself
and have a very close circle of people
around you that care enough to be sure that
you hold onto your crown.
The assassinations were tried with
poisons, daggers, arrows, swords, pistols,
rifes and bombs. Well over 25 percent, and
as many as half of all the British/English
monarchs were murdered. Those that werent
just escaped their deaths.
The book gives us a wonderful history,
in great details, of all of the monarchs and
their family trees. We travel through time
and learn about their personalities - some
of them nice, others

crazy as bedbugs!

Mayfower Stages Annual
Panto In North Hollywood
THE MAYFLOWER Club, located in
North Hollywood, will be presenting its
annual British-style pantomime, Robinson
Crusoe, for three weekends, beginning
January 26 at 8pm with a matinee 2pm,

MNS, Manager Charged
Over Miners Deaths
PROSECUTORS in Britain have charged
a mining company and a manager with
manslaughter over the deaths of four min-
ers in 2011.
The four miners died at the Gleision
mine in south Wales in September 2011,
when the mine they were working in was
engulfed by a huge rush of water.
Prosecutors said last month that 57-
year-old pit manager Malcolm Fyfield
has been charged with four counts of
gross negligence manslaughter. He alleg-
edly breached health and safety rules and
caused the miners deaths.
MNS Mining Ltd has also been charged
with four counts of corporate manslaughter
for allegedly causing the deaths by failing
to ensure a safe work environment.
PRINCE ALBERT of Monaco has accepted
an apology and damages from the Sunday
Times newspaper over an article suggesting
his wife Princess Charlene was reluctant to
marry him, lawyers said last month.
The prince had launched libel action
over a July 2011 article that suggested
Charlene agreed to a sham marriage in
exchange for payment, and that Albert
had confscated her passport to prevent her
from feeing Monaco so she would stay and
marry him for appearances sake.

turned a blind eye to corrupt activity and

apologized for the damage and distress
caused in court.

THE LATE entertainer Jimmy Savile
committed more than 200 sex crimes over
more than half a century, with most victims
children and teens assaulted the length
and breadth of Britain, from TV studios to
hospitals and even a hospice, a police report
said last month.
Detectives said the scale of Saviles sex
abuse was unprecedented in the UK They
have recorded 214 offenses allegedly com-
mitted by Savile between 1995 and 2009,
including 34 rapes, on victims aged eight to
47. In all, 450 people have come forward
with information about abuse by the late
TV presenter.
The number of Saviles crimes is likely
to rise further as more victims reports are
offcially recorded, said Detective Superin-
tendent David Gray, the chief investigating
police offcer.
The catalog of abuse is the fullest ac-
counting yet of the allegations against
Savile, a TV and radio personality who died
in October 2011 at age 84. Saviles elabo-
rate funeral refected his career as a popular
entertainer and tireless charity worker, but a
documentary broadcast late last year pulled
the mask away, claiming that he was a serial
sex offender who traded on his celebrity to
prey on vulnerable children.

~ STAGGERING NUMBER OF VICTIMS ~
Savile Report: Unprecedented Child Sex Abuse
ranged from a 10-year-old boy who said
he was sexually assaulted after he asked
for an autograph to children who were
groped when they attended tapings of the
music show Top of the Pops, and pupils at a
school for troubled girls who were allegedly
offered cigarettes and trips in Saviles car
in return for sex.
Police said Savile used his celebrity
status to hide in plain sight, winning
the trust of institutions and targeting vul-
nerable individuals unlikely to speak out
against him.
The report said Savile committed 50 of-
fenses at medical establishments, including
a cancer hospice and several psychiatric
hospitals, 14 at schools, and 33 at television
or radio stations; 73 percent of his victims
were under 18 and 82 percent were female,
police said.
A parallel report drawn up by senior
prosecutor Alison Levitt and also published
faulted offcials for not pursuing allega-
tions more vigorously. Levitts report noted
that several women had spoken to police
about Savile between 2007 and 2008, but
no charges were brought, in part because the
women declined to testify in court.
Having spoken to the victims I have
been driven to conclude that had the police
and prosecutors taken a different approach
a prosecution might have been possible,
she wrote.

Cooking is truly art
from the heart
AH, VALENTINES DAY, no better way to
reach the heart than my quote says than
great food!
One of my most popular requests of
a recipe, has been my Lavender Pound
Cake. I made this up years ago, and it was
so popular when I had the tea room. It is
very easy, but do make sure that you get
the dried lavender as pure as possible, I
used to get it from England, but now use
one of our local natural foods place. Also
when getting the yogurt, dont use the low
fat, low sugar etc etc, it really affects the
taste. You want regular plain or vanilla
yogurt, if you can fnd it lemon favoured
is also very good.
Lavender is one of my favourite herbs,
wish I could grow it but its just too hot in
Florida, however I can grow Rosemary, and
that is the same family go fgure!!
It is so versatile in use also, I use it
a lot as an essential oil...very calming if
sprinkled on a pillow or the old fashioned
way of laying dried lavender in drawers and
cupboards; I believe it also helped to resist
moths it is popular in soaps and bath
products....just a great herb. In cooking, I
have had it with roast lamb, as rosemary
is often used also, very nice taste. Also in
teas, cookies, etc etc!
Anyway I hope you like my version, it
also freezes very well
Lavender Pound Cake
2 cups all purpose four
2 cups sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
3 eggs
2 sticks (1 cup) butter (do not
substitute)
1 6-8- oz carton yogurt
2 Tbsp dried lavender
Combine all the ingredients in a large
bowl, blend at a low speed, then beat at
medium speed about 3-5- minutes. Pour
into lightly greased and foured bundt pan.
Bake at 325 F for 60-70 minutes, test with
cake tester.

Other newspapers ran similar gung-ho
stories about the princes military exploits.
Harry: I Have Killed was the story in the
Daily Mail. Video shot during the princes
deployment was shown dozens of times on
Britains major news networks.
Not everyone was applauding the
soldier-prince.
Lindsey German, leader of the Stop the
War Coalition, called Harrys comments
arrogant and insensitive and raised the
prospect that Harry might have targeted
Afghan civilians.
Former offcer Charles Heyman, who
edits a yearbook on British forces, said the
princes words may raise the already high
threat level against Harry.
The royal family are all targets, and he
now probably becomes the prime target,
royal family-wise, Heyman said.
But he can live with that. Hes a sol-
dier, he knows what hes doing. By and
large the worlds elite make sure their sons
and daughters go nowhere near the fring
line. So it brings credit to the royal family,
and its good for army morale, that Harrys
not sitting back in London saying, `Well
done boys.
Heyman said that as an Apache gun-
ner, Harry would have opened fre when
directed to do so by a ground controller
who would most likely have been under
enemy fre. Harry typically would have
been fring at Taliban forces in bunkers or
protected in some way, not troops out in
the open, said the former offcer.
PRESSURE
They would have been opening fre to
relieve pressure on the ground, maybe even
to rescue people on the ground, Heyman
said. If he was using machine guns, there
is no way he could say categorically he
destroyed the target, but if he was using
the Hellfre missiles against a bunker, he
would be able to say categorically that he
destroyed the target.
If you see a large explosion, andif there
is no more enemy fre from the area the
gunner can be pretty sure the enemy has
been elimnated, Heyman said.
Col Richard Kemp, a former British
commander in Afghanistan, said the fevered
press response to Harrys words refects a
certain naivety about the realities of war.
Hes fying an attack helicopter armed
with missiles and machine guns, and its
purpose is predominantly to come in and
provide fre support for troops fghting the
Taliban, so it would be very, very surpris-
ing if he didnt swoop in and kill, Kemp
said. I know its a delicate subject, but
Im surprised by how much people have
seized on what he said. If hed been brag-
ging about killing, that would have been
wrong, but he didnt brag about it.

Harry himself outlined one of his
less-prestigious duties. The third-in-
line to the UK throne said anyone

similar to Ludo or Parcheesi had
to then wait on his comrades like a
Buckingham Palace butler, ready
with a fresh cup of tea whenever
anyone rang their bell.

Harry told journalists ahead of his
return to Britain this past week.
He also denied rumors that he
was far better at PlayStation than at
traditional board games.

TARGETED
Harry returned to Britain last
month after a 20-week deployment
in Afghanistan in which he acknowl-
edged that he had targeted Taliban
fighters from the cockpit of his
Apache attack helicopter.
Asked in an earlier round of
interviews whether he had killed
anyone, Harry said: Yeah, so, lots
of people have. That admission
disturbed some Britons and led to
front-page headlines like the one in
The Daily Mail that read: Harry: I
Have Killed.
This latest round of interviews,
focusing on Harrys daily life at Brit-
ains Camp Bastion military base in
Afghanistan, is not likely to draw the
same kind of headlines.
The report mainly carried glimpses
of the princes daily routine, includ-
ing his favorite foods chicken and
broccoli and his favorite movies
Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now,
and Platoon.
In an interesting twist for an
Apache pilot, Black Hawk Down, the
Ridley Scott flm about a helicopter
raid gone wrong in Somalia, was
among the movies spotted in Harrys
communal tent.

The timeline Cameron laid out mostly
hinges on a Conservative victory in the
next general election. But he said legisla-
tion will be drafted before 2015 so that if
his party wins, it can be introduced and
passed quickly to ensure a vote could be
held in the frst half of the next Parlia-

Polite Vandal Guilty
Of Damaging Cars
A BRITISH professor who specializes in
cities and urban life has been convicted of
damaging luxury cars with graffti that was
surprisingly polite.
Stephen Graham was found guilty last
month of using a screwdriver to scrawl
inoffensive words such as very silly,
really wrong and arbitrary into the
paintwork of vehicles including a Mer-
cedes, an Audi, and a Volvo.
Prosecutors said the spree caused
18,000 in damage.
Graham, who teaches at Newcastle
University in northeast England, pleaded
guilty to criminal damage at Newcastle
Crown Court.
Grahams lawyer said the 47-year-
old academic had no recollection of his
August vandalism spree. Graham previ-
ously blamed a bad reaction to alcohol,
antibiotics and prescription drugs for his
behavior.
Judge James Gos was to sentence Gra-
ham this month.
Amy Winehouse Up For
Posthumous BRIT Award
THE LATE Amy Winehouse has been
nominated for a Brit Award, joining acts
such as Emeli Sande and Paloma Faith in
the running for best British female act.
Winehouse who died in July 2011
from accidental alcohol poisoning was
eligible as a result of the release of her
Lioness: Hidden Treasures album.
Sande, Mumford & Sons and Alt-J led
the nominations for Britains premiere
music awards, with three each.

In The Gulf
Irish golfer Paul McGinley, has been cho-
sen to captain Europes Ryder Cup team that
challenges the US at Gleneagles in 2016. The
46-year-old Dubliner was vice-captain during
the last two Ryder Cups. Colin Montgomerie
was seeking the appointment too, but with-
drew his request a week before a decision
was made. Others in the mix were Paul
Lawrie and Miguel Angel Jimenez. McGinley
has played in three Ryder Cups and has four
career wins on the European circuit.
Wales Jamie Donaldson captured his frst
European tour title, winning the Abu Dhabi
Championship, January 20, after a carding
a 14 under 274. Justin Rose went into the
fnal round two ahead of the feld, but the
Welshman came through beating Rose by
one stroke. Rory McIIroy and Tiger Woods
end their participation after two rounds, hav-
ing missed the cut.
Londons O2 Arena, January 17, gave Brit-
ish basketball fans a chance to see two of the
NBAs top teams. Carmelo Anthony scored
26 points as the New York Knicks thrashed
the Detroit Pistons 102-87.

Championships at the Alexandra Palace in
London, December 14-January 1, collecting
the 200,000 winners purse in the process.
The Stoke-on-Trent champion was 2-0 and
then 4-2 down against Michael van Gerwen,
but came back to add another major trophy
to his collection eventually winning 7-4.
Taylor knocked out old rival Raymond van
Barneveld, fve time BDO and one time PDC
champion, 6-4, in the semi-fnal. Hollands
van Gerwen beat James Wade, world num-

The BDO ran its Lakeside World Darts
Championship, at the Lakeside Country Club,
Frimley Green, January 5-13. A feld of 32
began the tournament, where a couple of big
names went out in the frst round; including
last years champion Christian Kist, who
was beaten 3-1 by Robbie Green. Three
time former BDO champion Martin Wolfe
Adams, the oldest competitor at 59 years
young, was eliminated 3-2 by the Dutch
teenager, the 18-year-old Jimmy Hendriks.
Top seed Stephen Bunting went out in the
quarter-fnals after a 4-2 defeat at the hands
of Darryl Fitton. 35-year-old Yorkshireman
and third seed Scott Waites, captured his frst
World title with a stunning 7-1 annihilation of
Tony the Silverback OShea in the fnal.
For the unfortunate OShea, it was the third
time as a losing fnalist.
FA Cup Minnows In The Fourth
Round
The third round of the FA Cup, January
4-5-6, witnessed four non-league sides
looking to make soccer history and make the
fourth round. Two did, two did not. Confer-
ence outft Macclesfeld Town ousted Cham-
pionship leaders Cardiff City 2-1 at Moss

The frst leg, semi-fnals matches of the
Capitol One English League Cup, January
8-9, saw Bradford City stir the hearts of
22,000 plus fans at Valley Parade, with a 3-1
victory over Aston Villa. Nanki Wells (19th
minute) got the second division fans roaring,
while Rory McArdle got a second in the 77

minute. Villas Andreas Weismann got one
back for the midlanders fve minutes later,

Gordon Strachan-New Scottish
Coach
The Scottish Football Association an-
nounced Gordon Strachan, as Scotlands
new manager with a contract to run through
the 2014 World Cup, and the 2016 European
Championships. The 55-year-old Strachan,
started his career as a player for Dundee,
followed by time at Aberdeen, Manchester
Utd, Leeds Utd and Coventry City, before go-
ing in to management with the midland side.
He collected 50 caps for Scotland along the
way. He later coached Southampton to a FA
Cup fnal, led Celtic to three consecutive SPL
titles, before spending time at Middlesbrough
which concluded in 2010. Owen Coyle, Gary
McAllister, Walter Smith, Joe Jordan and
Kenny Dalglish were amongst the names
mentioned for the post, but former Scottish
managers Craig Brown, Alex McLeish, and
George Burley heralded the decision as a
positive move for the nation.
Sporting Passings
Former England skipper Tony Greig, hit
his peak during crickets revolutionary World
Series sponsored by Kerry Packer in 1977,
that ultimately put more money in the hand
of the players and changed the game of
professional cricket forever. Born in South
Africa to British parents, it ultimately quali-
fed him to play for England. Greig signed for
Sussex in 1967. Five years later, he would
commence a string of 58 Test appearances
for England, including 14 as skipper. Choos-
ing the Packer series however, cost him his
Test career, and after publically endorsing
the Australian magnates cricket insurrection,
he was generally ostracized by the English
cricket establishment. He moved to Australia
and work as a TV cricket commentator and
analyst. Tony Greig was 65.
Kenny Morgans survived the Munich
air-crash that claimed the lives of eight Man-
chester United players and staff in 1958, but
his career never hit the fame and fortune of
Bobby Charlton, another player who survived
that horrendous night. Long time Red Devil
fans will remember his United career ended
three years later with a move to Swansea
Town, and afterwards a move to Newport
County. He retired from the pro-game in
1967. Kenny Morgans was 73.
Long time West Bromich Albion and Man-
chester City fans will recall the goal scoring
tenacity of Derek Kevan. Signed by the
Albion as a teenager in 1958, the Yorkshire-
man would go on to score 173 goals for the
midland club during 291 appearances, where
his association with Ronnie Allen and Bobby
Robson turned the trio into a spectacular goal
scoring machine. Kevan moved to Chelsea
in 1963, and then to Manchester City, where
he stayed two years and scored 48 goals.
His travels would take him to another eight
clubs, where his goal scoring talents were
always greatly appreciated. After retiring, he
moved back to the midlands and renewed
his association with the Baggies. Derek
Kevan was 77.
British rowing says Acer Nethercott, a cox-
swain who won a silver medal at the Beijing
Olympics in 2008, has died. He was 35.
Nethercotts death was announced by Brit-
ish Rowing on its Twitter account. The team
members death came following a two-year
battle against brain cancer.
Nethercott coxed Britains mens eight to
silver and also won the University Boat Race
twice with Oxford, in 2003 and 05.
British Rowing says in a Twitter post
today we mourn passing of Acer Nethercott.
Keen, eager (and) spirited like his name.
Matthew Pinsent, a four-time Olympic
gold-medalist and one of Britains greatest
ever rowers, added on Twitter that Neth-
ercott was out of the top drawer of GBR
coxswains.

Andy Murray took both Frenchman Gilles
Simon and Jeremy Chardy out in straights
sets, then outfought Roger Federer in the
semi-fnal with a tense fve setter, thus put-
ting him the fnals of the Australian Open for
the third time. Old rival and the very in form
Novak Djokovic was waiting for him and it
would not be a third time lucky for the Scot
who was the losing fnalist here in 2010 and
2011. Murray took the frst set 7-6 (7-2) but
the Serb won the next three, 7-6 (7-3) 6-3,
6-2, claiming his third consecutive Australian
open crown
India won the fourth ODI at Mohali by fve
wickets, to take an uncatchable 3-1 lead in
the fve match series. England 257-7 at 50

fnal match at Dharamsala by seven wickets.

English Cup Action
Bradford City became the frst fourth tier
football league side to reach the fnal of the
English League Cup for 50 years Rochdale
did it last in 1962. The Bantams were beaten
at Villa Park 2-1,in the second leg semi-fnal,
January 22, but a 3-1 home win in the frst
leg put them through with a 4-3 winning goal
aggregate; thus making soccer history in the
process. Christian Benteke put Aston Villa
ahead in the 24

minute, while James Han-
son grabbed an equalizer ten minutes after the
break for the second division club. Andreas
Weissman hit the winner for Villa a minute
from time, but it was not enough.
Swansea held on to their 2-0 lead acquired
at Stamford Bridge, in the other semi-fnal,
following a goalless draw with Chelsea, in the
home, second leg. The match was somewhat
marred, when Eden Hazard was sent off in

a ballboy. Its Swansea biggest cup event in

More misery for Aston Villa, who after
getting dumped from the semi-fnals of the
League Cup; Millwall added another coup de
grace against the midlanders, beating them
2-1 at the New Den, in the fourth round of the
FA Cup, January 25-26-27. Blue Square Con-
ference side Luton Town produced the shock
of the round with a 1-0 win over Premier side
Norwich City at Carrow Road, where a Scott
Rendell netting in the 80th minute had the
Hatters celebrating. Premier strugglers QPR
received no relief at Loftus Road, where frst
division outft MK Dons conquered 4-2. The
other remaining Conference club, Maccles-
feld Town, faced a home gig against premier
side Wigan Athletic, where a seventh minute
penalty by Jordi Gomez was enough to put
the visitors through 1-0. Division Ones Old-
ham beat Liverpool 3-2, and Championships
Leeds Utd prevailed against Tottenham 2-1
at Elland Road.
Scottish Soccer
The semi-fnals of the Scottish Communi-
ties League Cup, January 26-27, saw Hearts
beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle with a 5-4
penalty shootout after a period of extra-time
had produced 1-1 tie. Andrew Shinnie put
the Highlanders ahead three minutes after the
break, while Michael Ngoo hit the equalizer in
the 65

minute. Hearts had Scott Robinson
sent of 14 minutes from time, but Inverness
failed to take advantage.
The other-semi-fnal saw St Mirren oust
Celtic 3-2. Esmael Goncalves commenced
the scoring, while Gary Hooper leveled it

ENGLAND ARE looking ahead to the Six Na-
tions with an unexpected degree of optimism
following their sen-

Blacks. They have
no signifcant injury
concerns. In fact, it
will be a major sur-
prise if they dont
go one better than runner-up, their position
last year.
Scotland are facing the new season with a
new coach. Andy Robinson suffered humili-
ation in the autumn series. He was replaced
by Scott Johnson, the Australian who once
stalked the touchlines for Wales drumming
up support. He has drafted in Dean Ryan who
wont stay beyond this Six Nations but has
promised to provide a few bloodied noses.
Mike Blair has announced his retirement
from international rugby to make way for
a younger man.
Wales And Ireland
Hit By Injuries
It was all going so well for Wales till their
autumn schedule went horribly wrong. Their
injury list has swollen out of proportion and
coach Warren Gatland will be elsewhere
worrying about the Lions side to tour Aus-
tralia (see below). Rob Howley resumes his
duties as deputy but hes going to succeed
without Bradley Davies and George North
amongst several others. Most of the pack
by the sound of it!
One-time Lions captain Paul OConnell
has had a successful operation on a bulging
disc in his back but will not return to Ireland
team much before the end of the season. He
is unlikely to be suffciently match-ft to join
the Lions. Steven Ferris is just one of the
experienced players on a lengthening Irish
contingent of crocks.

Lions Tour of Australia
The strenuous programme starts with a
bit of a knock-about in Hong Kong. Things

Arsenal: The Gunners scored
four times in 10 minutes to blow
away West Ham, 5-1, after falling
behind in the 18

minute. Lucas
Podolski equalized four minutes later, and a
pair of goals by Olivier Giroud bookended the
outburst as Santi Corzola and Theo Walcott
also scored. Theo Walcott celebrated his new
contract by scoring at Chelsea, but nothing
could be added to the second-half strike and
the Gunners lost, 2-1.
Aston Villa: They led, 2-0, at
West Bromwich Albion with frst-
half goals scored 10 minutes apart
by Christian Benteke and Gabriel
Agbonlahor, but threw away the advantage
and settled for a 2-2 draw. Charles NZogbia
set up both goals after American Eric Lichaj
replaced injured Nathan Baker at right back
in the ffth minute.
Chelsea: Leading Arsenal at

Everton: A goal drought en-

win at Newcastle. Maroune Felliani won a

from about 30 yards; Anchebe got the win-
ner by steering home Nikica Jelavics cross.
The 0-0 draws with Swansea City (at home)
and Southampton (away) gave Everton 10
for the season.
Fulham: Some heroic saves
by Mark Schwarzer kept the score
respectable in a 2-0 defeat at
Manchester City, but the Cottagers
managed just two shots to the hosts 20.
Steve Sidwell struck the outside of the post
with their closest scoring chance. Not so
respectable was a 4-1 pasting at Manchester
United; they were never in the game and down
four by the time Aaron Hughes scored in the

frst league goal for the club in a 1-1 draw
with Wigan.-
Liverpool: Luis Suarez scored
his seventh goal against Norwich
in three meetings and Jordan
Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and
Steven Gerrard tallied as well in
a 5-0 rout. 12m signing (from Chelsea)
Sturridge became the frst Red in nearly 40
years (Ray Kennedy) to score in his frst three
matches with the club.
Manchester City: Utter domi-
nation carried City past Fulham,
2-0. David Silva smacked home
a rebound in the second minute
and added the capper midway through the
second half as City outshot the feeble Cot-
tagers, 20-2. Sergio Aguero played the fnal
nine minutes in his frst appearance since
tearing a hamstring on New Years Day.
James Milner and Edin Dzeko scored 11
minutes apart with Arsenal down to 10 men
and City survived the sending-off of Vincent
Kompany to prevail, 2-0.
Manchester United: Robin

left the Magpies with just two wins in the last
three months. Yohan Cabayes goal in the 35

minute punctuated a frst half dominated by
the home side, but after halftime the advan-
tage and team confdence evaporated.
Norwich City: A stultifying 0-0
draw with Newcastle at Carrow
Road deprived manager Chris
Hughton of paying back the club
that dumped him two years ago. Grant Holt,
left out of the starting lineup because of
injury, came on as a sub midway through
the second half and narrowly missed in stop-
page time when his glancing header cleared
the crossbar.
Queens Park Rangers: Loic
Remy, an 8million signing from
Marseille, debuted with a goal in
a 1-1 draw at West Ham. After
twice being caught offside in the opening
minutes, Remy timed his run to collect Adel
Taarabts pass and slot it home in the 14

a goalless home game against Everton. Rickie
Lambert rattled the goalpost with a free kick
as the Saints outshot their foes, 16-9. Keeper
Artur Boruc came up with a few key saves as
Everton was blanked for the frst time in the
last 10 away matches. Lambert and James
Puncheon scored second-half goals in a
stirring 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
Stoke City The Potters were
pummeled, 3-1, at Swansea City,
as Michael Owen notched his frst
goal for the club in stoppage time.
An attempt to bring American midfielder
Brek Shea to England for a trial and possible
transfer foundered due to Sheas recovery
from foot surgery and a reported refusal of a
$3m transfer fee.
Sunderland: Trailing 1-0 at
Wigan on an own goal in the
fifth minute, the Black Cats
clawed back with three frst-
half goals, then staved off their opponents to
escape with a 3-2 win. After David Vaughn
kneed the ball into his own net, Craig Gard-
ner tied the game with a penalty kick, and
three minutes later Steven Fletchers volley
of his own rebound provided a 2-1 lead. A
spectacular fnish by Fletcher shortly before
halftime added the third goal that proved to
be just enough.
Swansea City: Jonathan de
Guzman struck twice in the sec-
ond half as the Swans few past
Stoke City, 3-1. Ben Davies broke
open a goalless game four minutes after
halftime and de Guzman tacked on an im-
pressive free kick and clever lob to assure
the victory.
Tottenham Hotspur: American
striker Clint Dempsey atoned for an
earlier miss by heading home an
Aaron Lennon cross in the second
minute of stoppage time to earn
Spurs a 1-1 home draw with Manchester
United. Spurs dominated the match and
outshot United, 25-5, and forced seven saves
before Lennon cut the ball back from the by-
line and Dempsey side-footed it home. Spurs
also put seven shots on frame at QPR but
none of them got through in a 0-0 draw.
West Bromwich Albion: Peter

FORMER Liverpool FC owners Tom
Hicks and George Gillett have dropped
their legal action against the Premier
League club after agreeing to an out-of-
court settlement, ending a bitter dispute
that lasted more than two years.
The American businessmen lost con-
trol of Liverpool in what they claimed
was an epic swindle by club directors
and a bank in October 2010, when the
18-time English league champions
were bought for 300m by the parent
company of the Boston Red Sox.
UNDERVALUE
Hicks and Gillett said the club was
sold at a substantial undervalue and
claimed the Royal Bank of Scotland
and then-Liverpool directors Martin
Broughton, Christian Purslow and Ian
Ayre deliberately blocked attempts
to refnance the clubs debt.
They pursued legal action but Liv-
erpool said last month a confdential
settlement had been reached.
All claims and allegations made
against Messrs Broughton, Purslow and
Ayre have been withdrawn by Messrs
Hicks and Gillett and all legal proceed-
ings between the parties concluded,
Liverpool said in a statement.
RBS said later that it had also agreed
Liverpool Reaches Settlement
With Former American Owners
to a settlement with Hicks and Gillett.
All claims and allegations against
RBS arising out of the sale process
have been withdrawn (and will not be
repeated) by Messrs Hicks and Gillett,
RBS said in a statement.
Hicks, a former owner of the Texas
Rangers, and Gillett, who used to own
the Montreal Canadiens, bought Liv-
erpool in 2007 following a leveraged
takeover but were forced to put the club
up for sale three years later after strug-
gling to meet repayments.
They opposed the offer from Fenway
Sports Group and sought a temporary
restraining order in Texas to stop the
sale, but it went through.

this traumatic chapter in the history of
Liverpool FC, said Purslow, who left
his role as Liverpool managing director
soon after FSGs takeover.
RORY MCILROY could skip the
2016 Olympics because of a
dilemma over which country to
represent.
The No 1-ranked player from
Northern Ireland is eligible to
compete for either Britain or Ireland
when golf returns to the Olympics
in Rio de Janeiro. He said he could
miss the games to avoid having to
choose between the two.
I just think being from where
were from, were placed in a very
diffcult position, the 23-year-old
McIlroy said in a BBC documen-
tary. I feel Northern Irish and obvi-
ously being from Northern Ireland
you have a connection to Ireland
and a connection to the UK
McIlroy stirred controversy
last year when he said in a British
newspaper interview that he felt
more British than Irish. He then
posted a clarifcation on Twitter
saying he grew up a proud prod-
uct of Irish golf and had not made
a decision on the Olympics.
If I could and there was a
Northern Irish team Id play for
Northern Ireland, he said in the
BBC program. Its a tough one,
whatever decision I make wheth-
er its play for Ireland, play for
Britain or not play at all, maybe,
just because I dont want to upset
too many people.
McIlroy, who has twice repre-
sented Ireland at the World Cup,
was asked whether he regretted
saying last year that he felt more
British.
It was a moment, I dont want
to say of weakness, but of frustra-
tion with it all, he said. People
tune in to watch me play on TV
and feel like they are connected
to me in some way. I dont want
to repay them for their support by
doing something that they wouldnt
want me to do.
When I do make a decision, its
going to be one that Ive thought
long and hard about, and one I feel
comfortable with.

Brazil To Play Russia In
Friendly At Chelsea
BRAZIL COACH Luiz Felipe Scolari will
return to Chelsea in March when the 2014
World Cup host plays Russia in a friendly at
Stamford Bridge.
Scolari, who was fred by Chelsea after
eight months in 2009, took charge of Brazil
for a second time last year.
The March 25 match in west London will
be Russia coach Fabio Capellos frst match
in England since leaving the national team job
in February 2012.
Man United Secures Deal With
Chinese Drinks Firm
MANCHESTER United has announced a new
three-year sponsorship deal with Chinese
soft-drinks manufacturer Wahaha.
The deal could help the English Premier
League giant expand its appeal in a country
where it is thought to have 108 million
fans.
The company has been Chinas largest
beverage producer for the past 11 years and
becomes Uniteds frst offcial soft-drinks
partner.
Blackburn Hires Appleton As
Third Manager Of Season
BLACKBURN has hired Michael Appleton
as its third manager this season as the club
attempts to make an immediate return to the
Premier League.
The 37-year-old Appleton left fellow
second-tier side Blackpool just 66 days
after joining from Portsmouth, and signed a
2-1/2-year deal.
Blackburn started the season with Steve
Kean as manager before he was fred by
the clubs Indian owners and replaced with
Henning Berg, who was then dismissed on
December 27.
Cole Joins West Ham In Free
Move From Liverpool
FORMER England midfelder Joe Cole has
returned to boyhood club West Ham on an
18-month contract after leaving Liverpool on
a free transfer.
Liverpool signed Cole from Chelsea in
2010 but he was sent off in his frst match
and missed a penalty in his second, setting
the tone for a miserable time at the club.
He then spent a season on loan at French
team Lille.
Cole scored fve goals in 42 matches in
all competitions at Liverpool.
Theo Walcott Signs New
Arsenal Contract
THEO WALCOTTS drawn-out contract
standoff with Arsenal ended last month with
the signing of a lucrative new contract.
The England forward could have left the
club for free at the end of the season, but
has agreed to a 3-1/2-year deal that sees his
salary rise by two-thirds to about 100,000
a week.
Rodgers Criticizes Suarez Over
Diving Scandal
LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers has
criticized Luis Suarez after the striker said he
dived while playing for the Merseyside club in
a Premier League match in October.
The Uruguay forward admitted to falling
in an attempt to win a penalty during a goal-
less draw against Stoke, but no spot kick
was awarded.
Rodgers has described the Uruguay for-
wards behavior as unacceptable and said
the club would look to take action.
Blackburn Apologizes To
Allardyce For Keans Slur
BLACKBURN has apologized to former man-
ager Sam Allardyce for the false allegations
about his fring made by his successor.
Steve Kean, who was promoted to replace
Allardyce in 2010, was flmed by fans in a
Hong Kong bar the following year questioning
Allardyces integrity.
Blackburn was relegated from the Premier
League in May under Kean, who was fred in
September. The club is searching for a new
manager after his successor, Henning Berg,
was fred last month.
Allardyce now manages West Ham.
Man Uniteds Fletcher Out For
Rest Of Season
MANCHESTER United midfielder Darren
Fletcher will miss the rest of the season
after undergoing fresh surgery to resolve his
bowel condition.
The Scotland international returned to
action in September after 10 months out
recovering from ulcerative colitis a chronic
infammation of the digestive tract.
United said last month that the 28-year-old
Fletcher had enjoyed a period of sustained
good general health, but still required this
latest procedure.
United Agrees To Sign Zaha
From Crystal Palace
MANCHESTER United picked up one of the
hottest prospects in English football last
month by agreeing to sign Wilfried Zaha from
second-tier club Crystal Palace.
The 20-year-old winger, who made his
England debut against Sweden in November,
will be loaned back to Palace for the rest of
the season to help the London club in its bid
for promotion to the Premier League.
Zaha, will join United on a permanent basis
in July. The British media are reporting he
will cost 15m.
Wolves Fire Manager
Solbakken After Cup Loss
WOLVERHAMPTON Wanderers has fired
manager Stale Solbakken after the team
was beaten in the FA Cup by non-league
side Luton.
The contracts of the former Norway
midfelder and two members of his coach-
ing staff were terminated with Wolves only
six points above the relegation zone in the
second-tier League Championship after being
relegated from the English Premier League
last season.
Solbakken, who has previously led FC
Copenhagen to fve Danish titles, took charge
at Wolves only last May.
Man City Pitch Invader Banned
For Three Years
A MANCHESTER City fan who stormed
onto the pitch at Etihad Stadium during the
Manchester derby in December was banned
from attending matches for three years last
month.
The 21-year-old Stott pleaded guilty at
Manchester Magistrates Court to encroach-
ing on the feld of play and using insulting
words or behavior. Stott was also given a 56-
day jail term that was suspended for a year.
Stotts lawyer said about his client:Hes
lost his job, hes received death threats and
his family has suffered intimidation by mem-
bers of the public; in person, by telephone,
camping outside his fathers fat, and threats
on Facebook, Rebecca Caulfeld said.

Excited About
Future At Mercedes
LEWIS HAMILTON spent his frst day
with the Mercedes workforce rejecting talk
of a management structure in turmoil and
expressing his confdence that the team can
go from Formula One also-rans to potential
champions.
After 14 years at McLaren, the British
driver is embarking on a fresh challenge at
Mercedes to try to add to his solitary driv-
ers title from 2008.
However, the early months of his
stint at his new team have been rife with
speculation that the position of Ross Brawn,
Mercedes team principal, is under threat
following a recent reshuffe of the hierarchy
and widespread reports of McLaren techni-
cal director Paddy Lowe being brought in.
Ive been assured by Ross his com-
mitment is for the long term and he is here
to try to win with me, which reassures me
and gives me a positive feeling moving
forward, Hamilton said on last month.
Hamilton was equally sure that Mer-
cedes, which has won just one grand prix
since the teams return to F1 in 2010, would
be more competitive this year.
Everything feels really positive for me,
Hamilton said. While today is the day I get
to speak to the team, I have been around and
about and there is a great spirit here.
The guys seem hungrier than any group
of people Ive seen before. They seem seri-
ously hungry to win and excited they have
another shot at it this year.

Oosthuizen Wins Europes
Shot Of The Year Award
LOUIS OOSTHUIZENS albatross at the
US Masters last April has earned him the
European Tours Shot of the Year award.
The tour said in a statement last month
that Oosthuizens shot received 46 percent
of the voting by golf fans on its website.
The South African has received much
acclaim for the shot, a 253-yard four-iron,
which pitched at the front of the green be-
fore rolling across the contours and in.
Oosthuizen said in the statement that it
has to be the most memorable shot of my
career so far.
It was the frst albatross ever scored at
the par-5 second hole in Masters history.
The award marks the second success in
as many days for the former British Open
winner, after clinching the Volvo Golf
Champions in Durban last month
Woman Cricketer Could Play
For English Mens Team
ONE OF Englands top female cricket-
ers could become the frst woman to
play for a mens English county side
after holding talks with Sussex about
being the backup wicketkeeper for its
second team.
Sarah Taylor says Sussex contacted
the womens national-team coach Mark
Lane about using her next season.
Taylor will play for a mens club
team this year but could be on standby
if Sussex needed a wicketkeeper at
short notice.
The 23-year-old Taylor, who is about
to leave for the 50-over World Cup in
India, says it is a daunting prospect
but its brilliant that (Lane) backs me
to do it in mens cricket.

Burns, Vazquez Meet In
Unifcation Title Fight
MIGUEL VAZQUEZ of Mexico and
Ricky Burns of Britain will put their world
lightweight titles on the line when they
meet in a unifcation fght in London on
March 16.
Vazquez will be defending his IBF belt
for the sixth time since August 2010, hav-
ing lost only three of his 36 fghts.
Burns saw plans to defend his WBO
belt dashed recently when two planned
opponents withdrew from title fghts.
The bout will form part of a night of
action at Wembley Arena called Rule
Britannia, which will also include a light-
heavyweight world title fight between
champion Nathan Cleverly of Britain and
Robin Krasniqi of Kosovo.

Kessler To Fight Froch In
Super Middleweight Fight
MIKKEL KESSLER will fght Carl Froch in a
super-middleweight rematch in Britain in a
titles bout expected to be one of the most
anticipated of 2013.
No date or venue has been confrmed
for a rematch of the 2010 fght that Kessler
won on a unanimous points decision in his
native Denmark.
The 33-year-old Kessler is the WBA cham-
pion and has won 46 of his 48 fghts 35 by
knockout. Froch (30-2, 22 KO) holds the IBF
belt, which the British fghter took off Lucien
Bute in May 2011.
Froch says this is the fght that I want
more than anything in the world.
Kessler said, I dont care where we fght,
I am ready for war.

A Bridge Too Far For Murray
ANDY MURRAY cannot complain,
considering the last 12 months of tennis
glory he has basked in due to his talent.
But, of course he was disappointed not
to come away with the Australian Open
under his belt last month. Novak Djok-
ovic was just too much for the occasion,
Murray and his blisters.
The frst two, serve-dominated sets
were decided on tie-breaks before
Djokovic claimed the frst break of the
match late in the third.
It proved a pivotal moment with US
Open champion Murray, who was strug-
gling with blisters on his right foot and
a hamstring problem, unable to mount
a fghtback as Djokovic cruised through
the fourth to complete a 6-7 (2/7) 7-6
(7/3) 6-3 6-2 success.
After being called for a double-fault,
Murray knocked the ball away in anger
and fung his arm down. He didnt get
close for the rest of the tiebreaker and
was the frst to drop serve in the match
in the eighth game of the third set.
Djokovic broke him twice in the fourth
set, which by then had turned into an
easy march to victory.
It was strange, said Djokovic, add-
ing that it swung the momentum his
way. It obviously did. ... He made a
crucial double-fault.
Murray didnt blame his loss on the
one distraction.
