Lawmaker Arrested At
Anti-Fracking Protest
A BRITISH lawmaker was among
more than two dozen people arrested
last month at a protest against shale
gas extraction in southern England.
Caroline Lucas, Britains only
Green Party member in Parliament,
was led away by police from a sit-in
at the gates of a drilling site near the
village of Balcombe and put in a police van. Sussex Police said about 25
protesters were arrested for offenses
including assault and obstruction of
the highway.
Lucas said she and the other demonstrators took peaceful non-violent
direct action only after exhausting every other means of protest available.
Along with everyone else who
took action today, Im trying to stop
a process which could cause enormous damage for decades to come,
Lucas said. The evidence is clear
that fracking
undermines efforts to tackle
the climate crisis and poses
potential risks
to the local environment.
The CuaCaroline Lucas drilla Resources Ltd site, 30
miles south of London, has been
targeted by demonstrators opposing
the process known as fracking.
The company says its operation
at Balcombe involves exploratory
drilling for oil and wont include
fracking, though it hasnt ruled it
out in future.
Cuadrilla suspended work at the
site as protesters gathered for a sixday protest camp.

Enter the worlds largest expat survey for your chance to WIN 1,000 cash
CALLING ALL expatriates of any nationality! Have you moved overseas for
a better quality of life for your family, to
pursue a career opportunity or simply for a
change of scenery to the place you always
adored? If you have then we really want to
hear from you and this is the opportunity
to make sure your voice is heard.
Whatever initiated your move The Expat
Survey invites you to share your opinions
on a variety of different topics. Whilst
there are the usual questions requiring you
to tick boxes, the research study breaks
away from convention and enquires about
your experience, whether or not expectations have been fulfilled, what expats miss
about home and requests tips and advice
for others contemplating a move to a new
continent. Your input will make a valuable
contribution to understanding how those
residing outside their country of origin
can be supported, so that organisations
and companies that specialise in servicing
expatriate communities and individuals
can understand their needs better.
In a world of rapid change and volatile
economies, with the diversification and
consolidation of businesses resulting in
employment instability and mounting
stress, many have chosen to move overseas
in the belief that the grass is greener on the
other side. For some a permanent move,
for others temporary; in many cases for a
life-style change, for others there has been
no choice. Whether it has proven to be the
best or worst decision you ever made, your
feedback is essential.
The Expat Survey is the largest independent research study ever undertaken
on migration and expatriate life. Led by
the ex-head of research for BBC World, it
does not share any information with third
parties and has no links to Governments
whatsoever. It is entirely independent and
promoted, but not sponsored, by almost
100 publishers and reputable companies
servicing expatriates around the world,
such as the international accountancy firm
Chantrey Vellacott DFK and the specialist
expatriate insurance company Clements
Worldwide.
Conducted as an annual rolling programme the study comprises three surveys
Migration & Lifestyle start date July 15,
Retail & Finance start date September 10
and Travel & Health start date November 5,
2013. Whilst the main thrust of each survey
lasts eight weeks, all surveys will remain
live until December 31 so that a continual
collection of responses takes place.
Those that complete all three surveys
are automatically entered into a prize draw
to win 1,000, which you can opt to donate

THE MOTHER and stepfather of a fouryear-old boy who was starved and beaten
to death were sentenced last month in
Britain to a minimum of 30 years in prison
for his murder.
Magdelena Luczak and Mariusz
Krezolek were convicted this week of
murdering Daniel Pelka, who was abused
and tortured in the months before his death.
The case has horrified Britain and raised
questions of why teachers at Daniels
school in Coventry who had seen his
bruises and increasingly emaciated frame
did not intervene.
Judge Laura Cox said the sentences
reflected the couples unimaginable acts
of cruelty and brutality and callous disregard for Daniels suffering.
Luczak and Krezolek, who are both
from Poland, had blamed each other for
Daniels death in March 2012, after the
boy had been beaten and left to die in an
unheated cell-like room.
The judge noted that the pair had constructed elaborate lies such as telling
school administrators not to feed Daniel
because he suffered from an eating disorder to shield their campaign of cruelty.
EVIL
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has
described Daniels killing as evil and
said: His death should be on all of our
consciences.
Over a nine-week trial, Birmingham
Crown Court heard that Daniel appeared
healthy when he started school in September 2011. Over the months that followed,
he was subjected to deliberate, escalating
brutality.
He was forced to swallow salt, held
under cold water until he lost consciousness and subjected to regular beatings.
Daniel was locked in a room where the
door handle had been removed and keyhole blocked.
The small hand and finger marks on
the inside of that door provided a poignant
image of his desperate attempts to escape,
the judge noted in sentencing.
His starvation was systematic and
chronic, to the point that his bones ceased
to grow. In testimony, experts likened
his appearance to that of a concentration
camp survivor.
FATAL
The judge said that after Daniel was
dealt what would be the fatal blow, the
couple went about their lives, hoping that
he would regain consciousness and did
not take him to the hospital.
Over the nine weeks of acutely distressing evidence, I have not observed a
single sign of genuine remorse at any stage
from either of you, the judge said. Both
of you are in breach of what is probably
the most important position of trust, as the
parents of a small child who was entitled to
their protection, their love and their care.
Local lawmaker Geoffrey Robinson
said Daniel had been badly let down
not just by his mother and stepfather but
by his school, health professionals and
social services.

UK Immigration Checks
Draw Discrimination Claims
BRITAINS EQUALITY watchdog said
last month it would investigate the government for possible unlawful discrimination
after a campaign against immigration
violators that saw people detained at
workplaces and transit stations.
The Home Office took to Twitter to tout
the arrest of 139 people, using the hashtag

The tweets sparked a backlash from
critics, who pointed out that those detained
were suspects, not convicted offenders.
Part of the operation involved UK Border Agency officials stationed outside London subway stations conducting checks on
some commuters. Several witnesses said
the border agents appeared to stop only
non-white people.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission said it would be examining the

A Rightly Celebrated
Holiday Destination
THE ITALIAN LAKES are the home of celebrity. This is a theme that constantly recurred
in a recent holiday we spent on Lake Como.
Look down there on the rightCan you
see the villa with all the chimney pots? Grey
roof, lots of chimneys...Overlooking the lake.
Thats it. Thats the place. George Clooneys
villa. Im afraid I cant tell if hes in.
These were the
words of our courier,
Thomas, sent out to
accompany a party
of aged Brits in their
conquest of Lake
Como and other
tourist hotspots.
Now along here,
just after this tunnel
isNo, I wont spoil
it for you. I did not
know this till today and our driver Roberto has
just told me about it. Its along here on the
left No, its after this set of traffic lights
Oh no, not those. No, this is the place. At
the end of this wall, there is a gate Thats
it. Maybe we should reverse and look for
ourselves. Well, maybe not today Oh, there
it is. If you look through that gate, you could
see a drive running down to the lake. There.
That was where Berlusconi used to hold his
bunga-bunga parties. Sorry, we were going
just a little too fast Oh and just up here on
the right, a very famous English actor. I am
sorry I dont know his name but hes going
to buy a villa here.
APPRECIATE
Dont get me wrong. I can fully appreciate
the attractions of a holiday villa by Lake Como
so I suppose I can congratulate myself upon
having chosen this bit of Italy for a summer
break. Keeping company with the great and
the good. Well, with the wealthy anyhow, not
that my few hundred pounds a week budget
will get me much further than looking over
peoples garden walls.
It is nice though, Lake Como that is.
We stayed on the left hand side of the
lake, Menaggio to be exact. Now you may
not know it but Menaggio is famous. Well,
close to being famous anyway. For here
well not very far from here, Benito Mussolini
was taken by the partisans as a German troop
column was pushing its way up the western
shore road in late April 1945, fleeing the Allies
as they were entering Milan forty miles south.
The locals stopped the column, unaware
that Benito was in it along with his mistress,
Clara Petacci disguised as a German soldier
on the back of one of the lorries heading for
the mountains and a possible last stand.
The lorries were persuaded to turn round in
a village square at Dongo and then, captured
under the nearby aptly named rock Musso,
Mussolini was dragged out to be executed in
the village square.
DUMPED
The dead Italian dictator was then carried
down to Milan for a second, more public,
execution. He was dumped in a market place
where his corpse and that of Clara were
violated before being strung up by the feet on
a market stall. According to Thomas, somewhere in the vicinity of Dongo is a plaque
stating that near here someone famous died.
Apparently the notice is really that bland and
hard to find since it is designed to prevent
latter-day fascists from using it as a shrine.
Oh, I forgot to mention that close to

When Do I Have To
File These US Tax
Returns?
NO, APRIL 15 is not the answer were
looking for! What Im thinking about here
is the year you first arrive in the US, when
the chances are high that you wont arrive
on January 1!
Many people organize their US visits to
avoid the requirement to file details of their
worldwide income to the IRS. Obviously
if youre coming here to live, this is not a
possibility, but you will need to know when
your liability will start.
The US rules for deciding if someone
has been in the country long enough during
a year to be resident for tax purposes, are
quite complicated. (Please remember here,
that your tax status and immigration status
may not be the same its much easier
to become due to pay tax here than to be
allowed to stay!) The simple part applies
if you have been here for over 183 days,
but since thats half a year, it doesnt come
as much surprise! Also, you can be tax
resident if you are here for at least 31 days
in a year, and the total of your days this
year, one-third of your days last year and
one-sixth of your days in the year before
that is more than 183 days. This calculation is known as the substantial presence
test and it will generally apply if you are
in the US for four months or more on a
regular basis. Its possible to overcome the
results of the test if you are paying taxes as
a resident in another country and you have
a closer connection with that country.
To claim this closer connection, you
need to file Form 8840 with the IRS. I hope
asks him to marry her. Although Peter accepts, its left to Carla to splash out on her
own sparkler as Peters too broke to cough
up for an engagement ring.
Anna Windass tells Fayes dad Tim that
she wants him out of Fayes life. And after
Owen threatens Tim to leave, hes got no
choice but to pack up and move on. He
breaks the news to Faye, without blaming
Anna and Owen, that hes going to move
away and lies to say hes got a new job
elsewhere. But Faye isnt the only one wholl
be sad to see her dad go, hes currently
making an impression on Sally Webster and
has fair turned her head after giving her the
glad-eye in the pub.
And finally this month, David ups his evil
plan to split up Nick and Leanne after finding out that Nick could be the dad of Kylies
baby. David gets Nicks Bistro into all sorts
of trouble by watering down the spirits and
alerting Trading Standards, stealing cash
from the till and leaving critical reviews online.
But the worst is yet to come as David writes
an anonymous poison pen-letter to send to
Nicks wife Leanne, asking her if she knows
where her husband was on Christmas Day,
and with whom. Ooh, therell be trouble when
it all comes out.

Peter Capaldi
Named As Next
Doctor Who Star
By Jill Lawless
SCOTTISH actor
Peter Capaldi is the
next star of the longrunning science fiction series Doctor
Who, the BBC announced last month.
The identity of
the new Doctor had
been the subject of
frantic speculation,
and the revelation was made with fanfare
befitting one of Britains best-known
shows, during a live suppertime television
broadcast.
The 55-year-old Capaldi is best known
as venom-spitting spin doctor Malcolm
Tucker in political sitcom The Thick of It
and its film spin-off, In the Loop.
He has a long list of movie, television
and stage credits, from the 1983 film Local
Hero to the BBCs recent newsroom drama
The Hour. Hes also an Oscar winner he
directed Franz Kafkas Its a Wonderful
Life, which won the Academy Award for
best short film in 1994.
TARDIS
Capaldi is the 12th actor to play the
Doctor, a galaxy-hopping Time Lord
who travels in the Tardis, a time machine
shaped like an old-fashioned British police
telephone booth.
Doctor Who was first broadcast in 1963
and is now one of the BBCs most popular
programs, both in Britain and abroad.
Its longevity is due partly to the flexibility of the premise. The Doctor can
regenerate into new bodies and can travel
to any point in space or time.
Doctor Who ran from 1963 to 1989, and
was revived to acclaim in 2005. Since then,
the Doctor has been played by Christopher
Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith,
who took the part in 2010.
Capaldi, a fan of the show since childhood, said that being asked to play the
Doctor is an amazing privilege.
Like the Doctor himself I find myself
in a state of utter terror and delight, he
said.
Smith will leave after a November episode to mark the shows 50th anniversary,
and a Christmas special.
border checks.
Spain has long laid claim to Gibraltar, and the tiny territory on the
southern tip of the Iberian peninsula
is the source of occasional diplomatic
friction between Madrid and London.
REEF
The latest spat involves an artificial
reef being built in Gibraltar that Spain
says is hurting its fishermen. It has
floated the idea of charging border
fees as compensation.

DeLorean - Part 2
I Was Standing on the edge of my toilet
hanging a clock. The porcelain was wet, I
slipped, hit my head on the sink, and when
I came to I had a revelation! A vision! A
picture in my head! A picture of this!
REMEMBER this quote from the Back to the
Future movie? Well that revelation was time
travel, and the vision was from Doc E mmett
Brown. Well, Stephen Wynne must have
had a similar revelation, not a flux capacitor
exactly but a vision into the future, when he
decided to revive the DeLorean DMC-12.
A motor mechanic by trade, Liverpool born
Stephen Wynne immigrated to the United
States in 1982 and started a motor repair
facility specializing in the repair of British
and French cars. In 1982 he was approached
by a DeLorean owner who needed repairs
to his car, Wynne recognized the Renault
drivetrain and other components commonly
found on other cars his company normally
serviced were compatible with the vehicle
so the repair of the DeLorean was second
nature. Word quickly spread throughout the
DeLorean owners community and soon his
specialist customer base grew.
To further support this growth a second
location in Houston, Texas was opened
in 1988. This location was also a central
United States location for DeLorean owners
who wished to have their cars professionally
serviced and repaired but who may have been
reluctant to send their cars to the California

BRITISH POLICE say they are examining newly received information relating
to the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi
Fayed, and that officers are assessing the
informations relevance and credibility.
Scotland Yard declined to provide
details about the information, only saying
last month in a statement that the assessment will be carried out by officers from
its specialist crime and operations unit.
The force stressed that it was not reopening the investigation into the 1997
deaths of Diana and Fayed, who were
killed in a car crash in Paris.
In 2008, a British jury ruled that Diana,
the Princess of Wales, and her companion,
Fayed, were unlawfully killed due to reckless speed and drinking by their driver,
and by the reckless pursuit of paparazzi
chasing them.

US-Russia Tensions
Wont Hurt Sochi Games
By Stephen Wilson
THE WINTER OLYMPICS in Sochi
should not be affected by the heightened
political tensions between the United States
and Russia over Edward Snowden, gay
rights and other issues, a vice president of
the IOC said last month.
If there are political tensions arising,
it wouldnt be the first time before an
Olympic Games, and in the main, Olympic
Games overcome political tensions, IOC
vice president Craig Reedie of Britain told
The Associated Press.
Reedie downplayed the impact of President Barack Obamas decision to call off
a Moscow summit with Russian President
Vladimir Putin. The snub follows Russias
decision to grant asylum to Snowden, the
National Security Agency leaker, in defiance of Obamas repeated requests.
Obamas decision also reflects strained
ties with Russia over missile defense,
Syria, human rights and other issues. He
canceled the summit with Putin exactly six
months before the start of the Olympics in
the Black Sea resort of Sochi in southern
Russia.
ENCOURAGES
I think the games are quite clearly an
occasion which encourages peace among
nations and Im pretty sure, despite pressures at the moment, thats what will appear to the world in February next year,
Reedie said in a telephone interview.
Reedie also cited the global situation
before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt
Lake City, which were held just months
after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks

Dempsey Leaves
England, Joins
Seattle Sounders
CLINT DEMPSEYS six-year spell
in English football has come to an
end after Tottenham announced
last month it had reached an agreement with Major League Soccer to
transfer the United States forward
to the Seattle Sounders.
Dempsey was introduced as the
newest designated player for the
Sounders August 4 prior to Seattles
match against FC Dallas.
British media reported that his
move to Seattle Sounders is for
around 6m.
One of the most successful Americans to play in Englands top
league, Dempsey spent five years
playing at Fulham, where he scored
50 goals in 184 league appearances
and became a fan favorite. Last year
with Tottenham, Dempsey scored
seven goals in 29 Premier League
matches, scored three times in two
FA Cup matches and had two more
goals in 10 other games.

PROTECTIVE coating should be removed from cricket bats for Hot Spot
to achieve optimum results, the technologys inventor has said.
The current Ashes series between England and Australia has been
blighted by a string of contentious decisions, with Hot Spots thermalimaging cameras appearing not to detect some edges behind.
Warren Brennan, the managing director of the company which owns
Hot Spot, carried out internal testing last month and said he achieved
conclusive findings.
The type and thickness of the protective coating unquestionably affects the thermal signature of the Hot Spot system, BBG Sports said in a
statement. In laymans terms, the protective coating definitely diminishes
Hot Spot marks.
BBG Sports believes that in order to achieve optimum Hot Spot results,
then the removal of protective coating from bats edges needs to occur,
the statement continued. This will allow for the best thermal signatures
between cricket balls and natural timber cricket bats.
EMBARRASSING
Former England captain Alec Stewart labeled Brennans comments
embarrassing, telling the BBC that tapes and coatings have been on bats
for decades and that Brennan needs to take his technology back to the
nets to remove the current flaws.
I dont think Hot Spot can carry on, as bat manufacturers arent going
to change, added Michael Vaughan, another ex-England skipper. Hes
admitted that his system doesnt work in this era of cricket. It has to go.
Brennan says he will pass results of tests carried out last month to the
International Cricket Council.
Hot Spot became part of the Decision Review System from 2009, but only
in this series have doubts crept in about the effectiveness of the technology.
Australian broadcaster Channel Nine
claimed that silicon
tape might have been
attached to the edges
of bats during the Ashes series to fool Hot
Spot. Those allegations have been angrily denied by England
and Australia, and the
ICC isnt investigating
the claims.
English FA Pushing
For Penalty Technology
By Rob Harris
HAVING successfully persuaded FIFA to
introduce goal-line technology, the English
Football Association now wants cameras
to be allowed to settle other contentious
situations in games.
New FA chairman Greg Dyke says it
is a no-brainer that referees should be
permitted to defer to video replays for
penalty and offside decisions.
While England is just one of the 209
FIFA members, its opinions on rulechanges carry more weight as a member
of the sports closed rule-making panel.
The International Football Association
Board only approved goal-line technology
after FIFA President Sepp Blatter reversed
his long-standing opposition to it following
the 2010 World Cup.

Panama had beaten Mexico twice in this
years competition, resulting in an evenly
fought final, before Brek Shea grabbed the

Tottenham, has returned to the MLS having

up 12 consecutive victories at Sarajevo,
August 14, against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
They came from 2-0 down at half-time to

The first leg of the play-off round for
the group stage of the Champions League,
August 20-21, saw Celtic travel to Kazakhstan, to meet Shakter Karagandy. A goal in
each half gave the hosts a 2-0 result, but
the Hoops came close several times and
the result could have been very different.
Neil Lennon remained positive the reversal
could be changed at the second leg at Parkhead A rsenal went to Istanbul where their
opponents Fenerbahce are appealing a disqualification from European competition that
strangely enough, will not be decided until
both legs of this tie are played. After a blistering EPL home defeat against Aston Villa, the
Gunners came out with all barrels firing and in
a rather physical encounter came away 3-0
winners. The marksmen were Kieran Gibbs,
Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.
The first leg play-off round of the Europa

Dinamo Tbilisi, 5-0 in Georgia. Aaron
Townsend got the goals started, followed
by Paulinho, a brace by Robert Soldado,
finishing with a Danny Rose netting. At
the Liberty stadium, Swansea dismantled
Petrolul Ploiesti 5-1. Wayne Routledge got
two, Michu hit the net, followed by an own

The Romanians got a consolation goal three
minutes from time.
Highland League club Formantine United,

Arsenal: An early strike from
Oliver Giroud and a pair of goals
by Lucas Podolski powered the
Gunners past Fulham, 3-1, at
Craven Cottage. The Gunners were beaten at
home by Villa, 3-1, after Giroud scored in the
sixth minute. Two crucial fouls were called on
Laurent Koscielny, who was sent off midway
through the second half after conceding a
penalty kick by which Villa took the lead.
Aston Villa: Christian Bentekes
equalizer at Chelsea matched an own
goal by Antonio Luna; two minutes
after Benteke had been felled by
a Branislav Ivanovic arm swing, Ivanovic
scored the goal that sent Villa to a 2-1 defeat.
Benteke scored twice as Villa opened the
season in grand fashion by belting Arsenal,
3-1, at the Emirates Stadium. Benteke scored
on the rebound of his own saved penalty kick
and then converted one on the first attempt
to give Villa the lead. Luna scored late to
complete the win.
Cardiff City: Hello, Premier
League! Fraizer Campbell scored
two late goals in eight minutes to
complete a comeback as Cardiff
marked their home debut in this top
flight by belting Manchester City, 3-2. Aron
Gunnarssons goal on the hour tied the match
and Campbell escaped his marker in the 79th
and 87th minutes to claim an historic win. The
new era: first season in the top division since
1962 began with a 2-0 loss at West Ham
in which substitute Nicky Maynard fluffed
a chance to score the teams first Premier
League goal when he looped a shot over the
bar in stoppage time.
Chelsea: Three saves by Peter
Cech, including a full-length flying
stop off a Wayne Rooney blast,
aided the cause in a 0-0 draw
at Manchester United. Branislav Ivanovics
winner for a 2-1 defeat of Aston Villa came
just two minutes after hed been cautioned
but not sent off for conking an opponents
head with his forearm. Chelsea took the
lead on an own goal in the sixth minute and
in first-half stoppage time conceded a tying
goal; Ivanovic headed home a Frank Lampard
free kick with Villa players and coaches
still insisting he should have been sent off.
Lampard scored after failing to convert an
early penalty kick, and after Oscars goal in
the 13th minute opened up a 1-0 lead against
Hull City.
Crystal Palace: Marouane
Chamakhs goal in the 31st
minute at Stoke City evaporated
during a four-minute spell in
the second half, and the Eagles
came home with a 2-1 loss. The return of
Premier League play following an eight-year
absence drew a crowd of 23,285 to Selhurst
Park, and despite some heroics by keeper
Julian Speroni the fans viewed a 1-0 loss to
Tottenham.
Everton: Manager Roberto
Martinez was still looking for his
first win at the club after Everton
outshot West Bromwich Albion 22-8 but were
held to a 0-0 result. Luke Daniels hit the post
in the final minutes. They had opened the
season with a 2-2 tie at Norwich; they rallied
with goals by Ross Barkley and Seamus Coleman four minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead,
but six minutes later conceded an equalizer.
Fulham: The Cottagers were thumped
at home, 3-1, by Arsenal and trailed, 3-0,
when Darren Bent scored for them in the 77th

minute. They stole away from Sunderland with a win on opening day
despite surviving a 21-5 barrage
in shots. Swiss youth international
Pajtim Kasami headed home a Damien Duff
cross at the far post to score his first goal
since joining the club in 2011.
Hull City: Robert Bradys penalty kick midway through the first
half was enough for the Tigers
to gobble up Norwich City, 1-0,
despite playing a man down following Yannick Sagbos dismissal in the 27th minute.
Allen McGregor saved a penalty kick and got
the benefit of a correct goal-line technology
decision that showed a ball had not crossed
the goal line, but still Hull were beaten at
Chelsea, 2-0.
Liverpool: Daniel Sturridge
notched his second gamewinning goal in as many weekends as Liverpool won, 1-0, at
Aston Villa. Jose Enriques pass
put him in a good spot and Sturridge glided
past two defenders and rounded the keeper
to nudge it into the net. Simon Mignolets
penalty-kick save in the 89th minute preserved a 1-0 defeat of Stoke City; Sturridges
12th goal in 17 appearances since a 12m
move from Chelsea in January gave them the
lead, and Mignolet single-handedly retained
it by blocking the penalty kick as well as the
follow-up attempt.
Manchester City: Edin Dzekos
goal early in the second half put
City in front at Cardiff City but a
complete collapse enabled the
home team to take command and win, 3-2.
Alvaro Negredo got his first goal for the club
in stoppage time to narrow the final margin.
Dzeko was blanked but four teammates hit
the net as City drilled Newcastle United, 4-0.
David Silva started the rout with a goal in
the sixth minute and Sergio Aguero, Yaya
Toure, and Samir Nasri piled on the misery
for the visitors.
Manchester United: Wayne
Rooney Earned Man of the
Match honors for his committed
display in a 0-0 tie against Chelsea, which had put in two spurned transfer
offers for him. David Moyes started his
managerial reign with a 4-1 win at Swansea
City, courtesy of double strikes by Robin Van
Persie and Danny Wellbeck. Rooney came
on as a sub and assisted on Van Persies
second goal.
Newcastle United: Yoan
Gouffrans injury-time miss personified the Magpies frustration
in a 0-0 home draw with West
Ham. Sammy Ameobis cross bounced off
the inside of the post to Gouffran, who shot
over the bar from close range. The season
began in depressing fashion, a 4-0 loss at
Manchester City in which the Magpies managed just one shot on goal and lost Steven
Taylor to a red card in first-half stoppage time.
Norwich City: At home to Everton in the season opener, the
Canaries took a 1-0 lead, surrendered two goals to Everton in
four minutes, then grabbed a 2-2 draw with
a headed equalizer by record signing Ricky
Van Wolfswinkel. Right back Steven Whitaker
fought through two challenges to curl in a
left-footed shot against the post, then tapped
in the rebound. Six minutes after Everton took
the lead, the 8.5m-man headed home the
tying goal.
Southampton: After a conceding a goal
