JEWELRY, pieces of ships,

medieval ice skates, centuries-old skulls some fascinating pieces of Londons
history arent in museums,
but underground.
More often than not, they stay there,
but work on a new railway line under the
British capital is bringing centuries of that
buried history to light.
The 73-mile Crossrail line is Britains
biggest construction project and the largest
archaeological dig in London for decades.
In the citys busy business core, archaeologists have struck pay dirt, uncovering
everything from a chunk of Roman road
to dozens of 2,000-year-old horseshoes,
some golden 16th-century bling and the
bones of long-dead Londoners.
One afternoon last month, archaeologists were unearthing newly discovered
bones in a pit beside Liverpool Street rail
and subway station, while living citydwellers scuttled by, oblivious, a few feet
away. The remains belong to a few of the
20,000 people interred in a burial ground
established in the 16th century.
Everyones been running around in
Liverpool Street for years and not thinking
that theyve been walking around on bodies from one of the densest burial grounds
in London, said Nick Elsden, a Museum
of London archaeologist helping to oversee
excavations that go along with the work on
the Crossrail line.
DEEP
The 2,000-year history of London goes

deep 16 to 20 feet deep, the distance

between todays street level and sidewalks
in Roman times. Crossrail is providing
archaeologists with a chance to dig down
through those centuries and even beyond,
to prehistoric times.
This site is a rare, perhaps unprecedented opportunity, Elsden said as he
watched museum staff gently brush dirt

from newly found bones and a skull in a

hole that will soon house a maintenance
shaft. This is a major roadway outside
one of Londons busiest railway stations.
You dont get to dig that up normally.
The 14.8bn railway, due to open in
2018, will run across London from west
to east, with a central 13 mile section
underground. That has meant tunneling

beneath some of the citys oldest, most

densely populated sections.
Alongside tunneling work advancing
by 330 feet a week and due to be finished
next year more than 100 archaeologists
have been involved in excavations at 40
sites over the past four years.
Theyve found everything from reindeer, bison and mammoth bones dating
back 68,000 years to the remains of a
moated Tudor manor house, medieval ice
skates, an 800-year old piece of a ship
and the foundations of an 18th-century
shipyard.
Earlier this year, the dig unearthed
skeletons belonging to victims of the Black
Death, the plague that wiped out half of
Londons population in 1348.
NOMADIC
The latest discoveries include pieces of
flint, some shaped into tiny blades, from
a 9,000-year-old tool-making factory beside the Thames in what is now southeast
London. Its evidence the area was being
resettled after the last Ice Age by nomadic
hunter-gatherers.
At Liverpool Street, recent finds include
a 16th-century Venetian gold coin with a
small hole that suggests it was an early
sequin, worn as decoration on the clothes
of a wealthy person who probably lost it.
It was found in a rubbish deposit.
Elsden and his team are especially
excited to have uncovered the remains of

Scotland Footy Fans Invade London Again

PROSECUTORS formally levied drugtrafficking charges last month against two

young women from Scotland and Ireland
who were arrested last month trying to
depart Peru with 24lbs of cocaine in
their luggage.
The prosecutors office in Callao,
the city abutting Lima where its airport
is located, also said in a statement that
Michaella McCollum Connolly, 20,
and Melissa Reid, 19, face a maximum
penalty of 15 years in prison if convicted.
Their lawyers claim they were coerced
into carrying the drugs by criminals who
threatened them and their families and
had them followed to Peru to ensure they
collected the cocaine.
A Peruvian police official says both
women insisted on their innocence during questioning. He spoke on condition
of anonymity.
The two young women spent much
of their court day in medical checks
and preprocessing ahead of an expected
transfer to prison to await trial.
Since their August 6 arrest at Limas
airport as they tried to board a flight for
Madrid, the womens plight has received
blanket coverage by British tabloids.
The reports have featured photos of both
young women in swimsuits, and partying
in Ibiza.
Small-time smugglers who plead
guilty in Peru usually receive six-year
prison sentences and, with good behavior, can be out in two years.
Perus penal authority says 1,648
foreigners are currently in its prison on
drug-trafficking charges, 31 of them
British citizens.

where he lived with his British mother,
and his transformation into a troubled

RRItalian Mafia Suspect

Arrested In Britain

WEARING traditional kilts and

bonnets, thousands of Scotland
football fans descended on Londons Trafalgar Square August 14
before their homelands first game
in 14 years against neighbor and
fierce rival England.
The match at Wembley Stadium came
13 months before Scotland stages a referendum on whether to break away from the
United Kingdom after more than 300 years
of political union with England.
Pro-independence Yes signs were
soon plastered onto lion statues in the
shadow of Nelsons Column and Scotlands blue-and-white Saltire flag covered
walls just a few hundred meters yards from
Prime Minister David Camerons Downing Street office.
Police officers kept their distance at
the edges of the square, allowing fans
to down beer and climb into fountains,
with bagpipes setting the tone for a party

atmosphere in the sun.

Around 25,000 fans are estimated to
have made the journey south for the 111th
match against the Auld Enemy since the
two countries first official meeting on the
soccer field in 1872.
SCRAP
International soccers oldest rivals
were forced to scrap their annual friendly
matches in 1989 because of hooliganism.
They previously had been called off only
during the World Wars.
The three matches between the crossborder rivals since then have taken place
because they were drawn to face each
other in official competitions. The last
was in 1999.
The English Football Association said
a considerable amount of intelligence-led
work has been carried out with police to
prepare for the influx of fans from north
of the border. Scottish police sent specialized hooligan spotters to London to work
alongside the local force.

For many Scotland players and fans, the

chance to face England was a high point
for a national team currently ranked 50th
by FIFA that has never won a major
tournament and hasnt qualified for the
World Cup since 1998.
QUALIFY
Its more populous neighbor, though, is
ranked 14th and on course to qualify for
the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
But Scottish sporting spirits were boosted after the country produced Britains first
mens Wimbledon champion since 1936,
with Andy Murray winning the Grand
Slam in July at the All England Club.
He has certainly given us a huge spur,
said 67-year-old Roscoe Hendrie, who was
wearing a Scotland shirt and kilt. Hopefully we have got the spirit of Andy Murray
and that lad will encourage everyone to do
their best in tennis and everything else.
The hard-fought game finished with a
3-2 England win.

POLICE say they have arrested a

convicted Mafia boss who has been
sought by Italian authorities for almost
20 years.
Londons Metropolitan Police force
says 64-year-old Domenico Rancadore
was detained last month on a European
arrest warrant. He was due to appear at a
London court for an extradition hearing.
Police say Rancadore is wanted in
Italy to serve an outstanding seven-year
sentence for participation in Mafia
association in Sicily between 1987
and 1995. He went on the run in 1994
and was later convicted in his absence
in Italy.
Italys Interior Ministry said that
Rancadore was chief of the Sicilian
Mafia, or Cosa Nostra, in Trabia, Sicily,
in the 1990s.
It said he had been running a travel
agency while living in London.

Attack Seagulls Confine
Senior Citizen To Her Home

LIVING in the seaside town of Bridlington has

always been a delight to Penny Freeman;
that was until she was faced with aerial attacks by a flock of seagulls every time she
left her home.
Freeman, 69, described her terror to the
Sun saying: It was terrifying. I couldnt leave
the house and I felt like a prisoner. The birds
were very threatening theyre like lizards.
She was left facing the consequences
after beginning to put food out in the garden
for small birds, but, living on the coast of
East Yorkshire, she was soon swamped by
a large colony of ravenous seagulls.
The problem then escalated when one
of the eggs fell from the nest and the adults
constantly guarded it.

Canned 12-Course Meal

Described As Culinary Delight

A DESIGNER has created a 12-course meal

that comes in a single can.
The All In One was created by Chris
Godfrey at Kingston University in London,
is described as giving everyone a chance
to eat like royalty.
For those who doubt, this is what the All
In One can contains:
A selection of local cheeses with sourdough bread; Pickled Kobe beef with charred
strawberry;
Ricotta ravioli with a soft egg yolk; Shitake
mushroom topped with filled peppers;
Halibut poached in truffle butter in a coconut crepe; Risotto foraged ramps, prosciutto
and fresh parmesan; French onion soup with
fresh thyme and gruyere cheese;
Roast pork belly and celeriac root puree;
Palate cleanser, pear ginger juice;
Rib eye steak with grilled mustard greens;
Crack pie with milk ice cream on a vanilla
tuile; French canele with a malt barley and
hazelnut latte.
Godfrey added on his blog: Contemporary culture means on every trip into town;
youre bombarded with gimmicks galore.
Gimmicks often diminish their products to
turn a profit; downgrading on the content
but selling you something thats 50 per
cent more.
The All in One 12-course meal offers the
average Joe; the chance to dine like royalty
without the washing up.
Though many have cast serious doubts
that any visiting dignitaries would be served
this canned nosh at Buckingham Palace.

Dangerous Needles Cited In

Knitting Group Ban

NO LONGER will a knitting club be meeting

at the local library due to them causing
danger and noise.
The Knit n Natter group used to meet at a
library in Cramlington, Northumberland every
week, where they produced anatomical parts
for trainee midwives.
But, after three years of their productive
work Northumberland County Council have
banned the ladies from the building, because
it is too small to accommodate the group,
sometimes between 20 and 30 members.
Yet, the welcome mat is still out for them if
they split into smaller groups.
One confused member told the BBC:
Weve been told different stories and different complaints and I dont now know what to
believe. Weve been told knitting needles are

dangerous instruments and against health

and safety policy. Weve also been told that
its because we are too noisy.
She added: Its just so sad, we cant
afford to hire a room.
The knitting group has made thousands
of pieces of clothing for ill babies since
they started. They have also knitted around
1,500 pairs of breasts and knitted wombs
for midwives on training courses.
Wayne Daley, Tory councillor for Cramlington North, described the decision as
barmy.
He said it was unbelievable the council
would penalise a group trying to help the NHS
by throwing them out of what is supposed
to be a community library.

Getting Hundreds Of Dogs To Stay,

Fails In World Record Attempt

AN ATTEMPT at getting a huge number

of dogs to sit still at one time in one place
went to the dogs last month, when 34
dogs wandered.
The attempt to beat the world record saw
The Kennel Club gather 635 dogs to take part
in the challenge, which required the animals
to sit or lie still for two minutes.
The animals were lined up alongside their
owners for the challenge at Rockingham
Castle in Market Harborough, Leicestershire.
But the effort ended in failure after 34
animals were disqualified by independent
adjudicators, meaning only 601 managed
the feat.
The current record stands at 627, set by
the RSPCA at Windsor Great Park in 2005,
reported the Daily Telegraph.
A spokesman for the Kennel Club said:
Some dogs did seem to find it a bit too
distracting. A few of them were a little too
busy wandering around or sniffing the other
animals.
Organisers say they will try again next
year.

TODAYS
BRITAIN
Mascot Loses Job After 20
Years Not Fat Enough

BRADFORD CITY football club fired their

mascot last month for not being fat enough.
Lenny Berry, who has played the bowler
hat-wearing mascot for almost 20 years,
refused an offer to wear a padded suit,
reported the Bradford Telegraph and Argus.
Bosses at the League One club said his
appearance no longer matched the original
concept after he lost seven stones after
contracting diabetes.
Club director Roger Owen confirmed the
issue of club mascots had been discussed
during a board meeting at the end of last
season and it had agreed action needed
to be taken.
In the case of The City Gent, the main
issue was his physical appearance, which
was much changed from the original concept of the then-chairman, the late Stafford
Heginbotham, who styled the City Gent on
himself, he said.
Berry, 59, said: Im am absolutely gutted. I am a grown man and this is something
I have cried over.
I dont want the club getting hurt, I love
the club. If you cut me open Id be claret
and amber.
It was thought Berry had been diagnosed
with diabetes in 2006 which prompted him to
lose weight afterwards. However the lifelong
Bradford fan is not bitter, and will still attend
their matches.

A MARMITE advertisement on television has

upset some people, who say it is deeply
offensive.
The ad, a parody of the work of animal
welfare officers, drew hundreds of complaints last month.
The prime time ad first aired during Coronation Street, and spoofed on officers recovering neglected jars of Marmite that had
been stored in the back of food cupboards.
Over 250 complaints about the ad were
received by The Advertising Standards
Authority. An ASA spokesman said some
people felt the ad was deeply offensive
because it trivialised the work of both
animal welfare charities and child protection
agencies. The ASA is currently logging and
assessing the complaints but has made no
decision on whether it will investigate the ad.
A Unilever spokeswoman said: This is
the first time Marmite has been on television
for two years and we have made every effort to ensure that it entertains anyone who
watches it.
An RSPCA spokeswoman commented:
We understand that animal lovers are
concerned on our behalf people either love
the advert or hate it. We plan to talk to the
makers of Marmite about how we can work
together on animal welfare.

Toilets And Flushing Stopped

By Fatberg In London Drains

REPAIRS HAVE started after Britains biggest

ever fatberg the size of a double-decker
bus was removed from a London sewer.
The 15-tonne mass of festering food fat
mixed with wet wipes and sanitary products
threatened to send raw sewage spurting onto
the leafy streets of Kingston upon Thames.
Gordon Hailwood, waste contracts supervisor for Thames Water, said: Weve never
seen a single, congealed lump of lard this
big clogging our sewers before He added:
The sewer was almost completely clogged
with over 15 tonnes of fat, said Hailwood.
If we hadnt discovered it in time, raw
sewage could have started spurting out of
manholes across the whole of Kingston.
It was so big it damaged the sewer and
repairs will take up to six weeks.
It took workmen 10 nights of work, using
an extremely high-pressure jet hose to blast
away the massive blockage.
The repairs on 20 metres of damaged pipe
affected by the fatberg were expected to
take six weeks.
Meanwhile water bosses want the public
to change their ways to help avoid another
gigantic fat blob forming under Londons
streets. Advice to the general public includes,
sanitary items and wet wipes which do not
break down like toilet paper and the message is: Bin it dont block it.

Jolly Rocker Queue At

Legoland, Became Jolly
Punch Up For Parents

A WONDERFUL day out at Legoland was

ruined for many when a massive brawl
broke out in the queue for the Jolly Rocker
ride last month.
The fight, amongst parents, involved 10
people, and one man even brandished a
metal pole as a weapon, as horrified children
witnessed the brawl at the theme park in
Windsor, Berkshire.
The ride had to be closed for 20 minutes
as a result of the fracas.
Police were called and two men, aged 29
and 30, were held on suspicion of a public
order offence. They were both given a fixed
penalty notice.
It was vicious, one witness told The Sun.
All hell broke loose. It was frightening for innocent adults forced to watch, not to mention
the kids. There were quite long queues so I
dont know if that is what made things boil
over. You dont expect to see things like this
at Legoland. My 10-year-old said that hes
never going back there again. Hes never
seen this kind of violence before.

HES BEEN deposed, reviled, buried and

Englands King Richard III.
A British High Court judge last month
granted a group of Richards relatives
permission to challenge plans to rebury the
15th-century monarch in the city of Leicester, where his remains were found last year.
Judge Charles Haddon-Cave said the
Plantagenet Alliance could take action
against the government and the University
of Leicester though he hoped the opposing
sides would settle out of court.
The government has given Leicester
Cathedral permission to rebury the king, but
the relatives want him buried in the northern
England city of York, claiming it was Richards wish.
Richard was killed in battle in 1485.
His skeleton was found under a Leicester
parking lot.

Cat DNA Database Helps

Convict Killer

BRITISH academics say a newly created DNA

database of British cats has helped convict
a killer, illustrating how even pets genetic
material can be a boon to forensic scientists.
The University of Leicester says its
catalogue of 152 felines DNA buttressed the
prosecution case against David Hilder, who
was convicted of manslaughter last month
at a court in Winchester.
Hilder killed and dismembered his neighbor, David Guy, in an English resort town last
year, dumping his torso on a nearby beach,
where it was discovered by students.
Cat hairs found on the torso matched
Hilders pet, Tinker. Academics said last
month that they created the DNA database
in an effort to show how accurate the match
was.

Lawmakers Told Not To Rub

Dignitary Statues Toes

PARLIAMENTARY officials in Britain want

lawmakers to keep their hands off Margaret
Thatchers toes.
Authorities are considering roping off
statues of former prime ministers, including
Thatcher and Winston Churchill, because
they are suffering wear and tear from legislators rubbing their toes for luck.
Members of Parliament traditionally touch
the statues in the House of Commons lobby
before entering the chamber.
Deputy House of Commons curator
Melanie Unwin told Parliaments Works of
Art Committee that statues of Thatcher,
Churchill, Clement Attlee and David Lloyd
George are seriously under threat due to the
tradition of touching the toes of the statues
for good luck.
The committee agreed that Do not touch
signs should be put up, and is considering
installing barriers around the statues.

House Prices Rocket By 8 Percent

In A Year

London House prices have soared by 8.1

percent in a year to record highs, official
figures revealed last month.
The increase pushed the average cost of a
home in June to 425,000. It was the biggest
jump for two and a half years and sparked
a warning of a very real risk of a property
bubble in London. But as property prices
rose across England, the Government said
the housing market had turned a corner
by showing renewed confidence.
London is racing ahead of other regions,
with the West Midlands seeing the second
biggest rise at 3.1 percent, followed by the
South East at 2.9 percent.
Howard Archer, chief UK economist at IHS
Global Insight said: The increase is already
becoming a matter of some concern and they
could rise even more because of the shortage
of homes for sale. While many homeowners
will welcome the value of their property rising,
the increases mean a growing number of
Londoners are unable to buy their first home.
Boris Johnson rejected the criticism,
stressing that billions were being invested
to increase the housing supply in London.
A spokesman for the Mayor said: Having
built a record number of affordable homes
already, the Mayor remains on track to deliver
100,000 affordable homes over two terms.
Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles,

for new-build homes under the Help-To-Buy
equity loan scheme as showing the Government was creating a sustainable boost in
UK housing.

Lawmaker Arrested At
Anti-Fracking Protest
A BRITISH lawmaker was among
more than two dozen people arrested
last month at a protest against shale
gas extraction in southern England.
Caroline Lucas, Britains only
Green Party member in Parliament,
was led away by police from a sit-in
at the gates of a drilling site near the
village of Balcombe and put in a police van. Sussex Police said about 25
protesters were arrested for offenses
including assault and obstruction of
the highway.
Lucas said she and the other demonstrators took peaceful non-violent
direct action only after exhausting every other means of protest available.
Along with everyone else who
took action today, Im trying to stop
a process which could cause enormous damage for decades to come,
Lucas said. The evidence is clear

that fracking
undermines efforts to tackle
the climate crisis and poses
potential risks
to the local environment.
The CuaCaroline Lucas drilla Resources Ltd site, 30
miles south of London, has been
targeted by demonstrators opposing
the process known as fracking.
The company says its operation
at Balcombe involves exploratory
drilling for oil and wont include
fracking, though it hasnt ruled it
out in future.
Cuadrilla suspended work at the
site as protesters gathered for a sixday protest camp.

THE OLD FAMILY RECIPE

Enter the worlds largest expat survey for your chance to WIN 1,000 cash
CALLING ALL expatriates of any nationality! Have you moved overseas for
a better quality of life for your family, to
pursue a career opportunity or simply for a
change of scenery to the place you always
adored? If you have then we really want to
hear from you and this is the opportunity
to make sure your voice is heard.
Whatever initiated your move The Expat
Survey invites you to share your opinions
on a variety of different topics. Whilst
there are the usual questions requiring you
to tick boxes, the research study breaks
away from convention and enquires about
your experience, whether or not expectations have been fulfilled, what expats miss
about home and requests tips and advice
for others contemplating a move to a new
continent. Your input will make a valuable
contribution to understanding how those
residing outside their country of origin
can be supported, so that organisations
and companies that specialise in servicing
expatriate communities and individuals
can understand their needs better.
In a world of rapid change and volatile
economies, with the diversification and
consolidation of businesses resulting in
employment instability and mounting
stress, many have chosen to move overseas
in the belief that the grass is greener on the
other side. For some a permanent move,
for others temporary; in many cases for a
life-style change, for others there has been
no choice. Whether it has proven to be the
best or worst decision you ever made, your

feedback is essential.
The Expat Survey is the largest independent research study ever undertaken
on migration and expatriate life. Led by
the ex-head of research for BBC World, it
does not share any information with third
parties and has no links to Governments
whatsoever. It is entirely independent and
promoted, but not sponsored, by almost
100 publishers and reputable companies
servicing expatriates around the world,
such as the international accountancy firm
Chantrey Vellacott DFK and the specialist
expatriate insurance company Clements

Conducted as an annual rolling programme the study comprises three surveys
Migration & Lifestyle start date July 15,

Conservative Party Hire

Obama Campaign Strategist

THE GOVERNING Conservative Party

have hired Jim Messina, President Barack
Obamas former campaign manager, to
advise them ahead of the 2015 general
election.
Messina was Obamas national chief of
staff for the 2008 presidential campaign
and the presidents campaign manager in
2012. His organizational flair and social
media strategy have been credited for helping secure Obamas re-election.
Messina is now chairman of a nonprofit
called Organizing for Action and head of
consulting firm The Messina Group.
Messina said last month that he had
long admired Prime Minister (David)
Cameron and would be offering the Conservatives strategic campaign advice. He
said he would remain based in the United
States and would not manage day-to-day
political operations.
The Conservatives currently govern in
coalition with the Liberal Democrats, but
hope to win a parliamentary majority in
2015. Their challenge is to gain re-election
at a time when Britains economy is only

weakly recovering from the recession triggered by the 2008 global financial crisis.
Under Cameron, the party combines
conservative economic policies such as
privatization and spending cuts, with a
liberal stance on issues like same-sex
marriage, which Britain recently legalized.
The BBC reported that Messina will
advise Conservative chiefs and the partys
campaign strategist, Lynton Crosby. Since
hiring Crosby a veteran Australian political operator nicknamed the Wizard
of Oz in November, the Conservatives
have appeared to take a tough stance on
issues such as immigration in order to
win support away from rivals on the right.
This is not the first time the Conservatives have turned to US Democrats for advice. Cameron hired Obama adviser Anita
Dunne to help him prepare for televised
debates during the 2010 election

THE MOTHER and stepfather of a fouryear-old boy who was starved and beaten
to death were sentenced last month in
Britain to a minimum of 30 years in prison
for his murder.
Magdelena Luczak and Mariusz
Krezolek were convicted this week of
murdering Daniel Pelka, who was abused
and tortured in the months before his death.
The case has horrified Britain and raised
questions of why teachers at Daniels
school in Coventry who had seen his
bruises and increasingly emaciated frame
did not intervene.
Judge Laura Cox said the sentences
reflected the couples unimaginable acts
of cruelty and brutality and callous disregard for Daniels suffering.
Luczak and Krezolek, who are both
from Poland, had blamed each other for
Daniels death in March 2012, after the
boy had been beaten and left to die in an
unheated cell-like room.
The judge noted that the pair had constructed elaborate lies such as telling
school administrators not to feed Daniel
because he suffered from an eating disorder to shield their campaign of cruelty.
EVIL
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has
described Daniels killing as evil and
said: His death should be on all of our
consciences.
Over a nine-week trial, Birmingham
Crown Court heard that Daniel appeared
healthy when he started school in September 2011. Over the months that followed,
he was subjected to deliberate, escalating
brutality.
He was forced to swallow salt, held
under cold water until he lost consciousness and subjected to regular beatings.
Daniel was locked in a room where the
door handle had been removed and keyhole blocked.
The small hand and finger marks on
the inside of that door provided a poignant
image of his desperate attempts to escape,
the judge noted in sentencing.
His starvation was systematic and
chronic, to the point that his bones ceased
to grow. In testimony, experts likened
his appearance to that of a concentration
camp survivor.
FATAL
The judge said that after Daniel was
dealt what would be the fatal blow, the
couple went about their lives, hoping that
he would regain consciousness and did
not take him to the hospital.
Over the nine weeks of acutely distressing evidence, I have not observed a
single sign of genuine remorse at any stage
from either of you, the judge said. Both
of you are in breach of what is probably
the most important position of trust, as the
parents of a small child who was entitled to
their protection, their love and their care.
Local lawmaker Geoffrey Robinson
said Daniel had been badly let down
not just by his mother and stepfather but
by his school, health professionals and
social services.

Immigration Benefits for

Same-Sex Couples

sex couples. US citizen or lawful permanent

residents (green card holders) can now sponsor their same-sex foreign national spouse for
a family based immigrant visa (green card).
On June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court struck
down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)s
definition of marriage as being between a
man and a woman as unconstitutional. Under
DOMA, federal agencies such as the United
States Citizenship and Immigration Services
(USCIS) were required to define marriage
as between a man and woman, preventing
same-sex couples from being eligible for
hundreds of federal benefits that were available to opposite-sex couples. Now, same-sex
couples will be able to access such benefits,
including immigration benefits. USCIS has
announced on its website that in all cases
where the eligibility of an immigration benefit
depends on the existence of a marriage or
on ones status as a spouse, a same-sex
marriage will be treated exactly the same as
an opposite-sex marriage. The immigration
benefits for spouses include sponsoring a
spouse for a green card, sponsoring stepchildren, derivative visas for spouses of holders
of nonimmigrant visas like H-1B, F, E or L
visas, derivative status for immigrant visas,
hardship waivers, Violence Against Women
Act petitions, K (fianc) visas, and following
to join benefits, among others.
For US citizen or lawful permanent residents
who wish to sponsor their spouse for an immigrant visa (green card), one key will be the
legal validity of the marriage. The Department
of Homeland Security (DHS) has clarified
that, with limited exceptions, as a general
matter, USCIS (United States Citizenship and
Immigration Services) looks to the law of the
place where the marriage took place when
determining whether it is valid for immigration
purposes. The Board of Immigration Appeals
has also decided that the validity of a marriage
is based on where it was celebrated. So it
appears that as long as a couple was legally
married in a place where same-sex marriages
are recognized and valid they can apply for
immigration benefits, even in cases where the

In addition to proving that a marriage is

legally valid, same-sex couples must still
prove that their marriage is bona fide (a real
marriage, not for immigration purposes) just
like opposite-sex couples. Proof of a bona
fide marriage can include documentation
such as a marriage certificate, photos of the
wedding/honeymoon, photos of joint life, joint
ownership of property, joint lease, joint tax
returns, joint bank accounts, joint children,
and affidavits from friends and family verifying
the marriage.
For a US citizen or legal permanent resident
to sponsor their spouse for a green card, they
must first file an I-130 Petition for Alien Relative with a USCIS together with proof of valid
marriage and proof of his or her status as a
citizen/permanent resident. Proof of financial
responsibility for the foreign national spouse
is also needed. If a foreign national spouse
is already in the US, they may be able to file
to adjust their status. Adjustment of status is
the process in which a foreign national can
gain permanent resident status (green card)
without leaving the US and returning to their
home country. The adjustment of status application can be filed along with the I-130. If a
spouse is not in the US, they will likely need
to get an immigrant visa through the consulate of their home country. The process and
timeframe for sponsoring a foreign national
spouse varies greatly depending on certain
factors such as where the spouses live and
whether or not the sponsor is a US citizen or
green card holder. There are also other factors
that can affect the successful sponsorship of
a spouse including past overstay, illegal entry,
finances, or criminal records, among others.
Please consult with an immigration attorney
to determine what the best and fasted way is
for a specific foreign national spouse to gain
their permanent residency.

Anti-Fraud Investigators Lose Track Of Docs

BRITAINS Serious Fraud Office says

it temporarily lost track of thousands of
documents gathered as part of its investigation into allegations of corruption at
defense company BAE Systems PLC.
The fraud office said last month that
32,000 documents, along with audio
tapes and other electronic media, were
mistakenly shipped to the wrong place
after the end of its investigation into the

British military contractor.

BAE had been suspected of using
corrupt means to win contracts in the
Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa.
The company eventually paid hundreds
of millions of dollars in a settlement
with American and British authorities
in 2010.
The Serious Fraud Office says almost
all the documents have been recovered .

The text of a dummy speech prepared

as part of a war game exercise in the
spring of 1983 to spell out possible Cold
War scenarios was released by Britains
National Archives in a tranche of declassified documents.
Invoking family, God and patriotism in
moving tones, it shows the queen trying to
rally the country amid the threat of annihilation from a nuclear-armed Soviet Union.
We all know that the dangers facing us
today are greater by far than at any time
in our long history, the text reads. But
whatever terrors lie in wait for us all the
qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad
century will once more be our strength.
The documents, which show the imaginary address from the queen dated as
March 4, 1983, underscore the seriousness
with which UK officials contemplated the
nuclear threat.
REAGAN
That same year, President Ronald Reagan denounced the Soviet Union as an evil
empire and the US deployed cruise mis-

siles to
Europe, including in Britain. The
text also recalls the strength and struggles
of the first two World Wars.
Now this madness of war is once more
spreading through the world and our brave
country must again prepare itself to survive
against great odds, the speech reads.
It has Elizabeth who last year marked
60 years on the throne saying she had
never forgotten the sorrow and pride she
felt as she and her sister huddled around the
radio listening to her father, George VI, address the nation as World War II broke out.
Not for a single moment did I imagine
that this solemn and awful duty would one
day fall to me, the text says.

UK Immigration Checks
Draw Discrimination Claims
BRITAINS EQUALITY watchdog said
last month it would investigate the government for possible unlawful discrimination
after a campaign against immigration
violators that saw people detained at
workplaces and transit stations.
The Home Office took to Twitter to tout
the arrest of 139 people, using the hashtag
immigrationoffenders.
The tweets sparked a backlash from
critics, who pointed out that those detained
were suspects, not convicted offenders.
Part of the operation involved UK Border Agency officials stationed outside London subway stations conducting checks on
some commuters. Several witnesses said
the border agents appeared to stop only
non-white people.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission said it would be examining the
powers used and the justification for the
immigration checks in order to assess

whether unlawful discrimination took

place.
Labour Party immigration spokesman
Chris Bryant called on the government to
offer immediate reassurance that people
were not being stopped on the basis of
ethnicity.
A Home Office spokesman insisted the
immigration checks were intelligenceled and not based on appearance, race,
color, ethnic origin or nationality.
The equality watchdog said it also would
look at a government pilot project in which
signs were driven around London advising
people who did not have visas to Go home,
or youll be picked up and deported.
Len McCluskey, leader of Unite, one
of Britains biggest trade unions, branded
the billboards vile, and the Refugee and
Migrant Forum of East London has hired
lawyers to mount a court challenge if the
ad campaign is not dropped.

personal diaries and letters to her husband,
Laurence Olivier.
The London museum said last month
it bought the archive from Leighs grandchildren for an undisclosed sum.
The trove includes photographs, annotated film and theater scripts, and thousands of letters from Winston Churchill,
Marilyn Monroe, Noel Coward and others.
There are more than 200 letters exchanged with Olivier, to whom Leigh was
married for 20 years.
The British-born star won an Academy

Prince William Describes

His Joy At Parenthood

A Rightly Celebrated
Holiday Destination
THE ITALIAN LAKES are the home of celebrity. This is a theme that constantly recurred
in a recent holiday we spent on Lake Como.
Look down there on the rightCan you
see the villa with all the chimney pots? Grey
roof, lots of chimneys...Overlooking the lake.
Thats it. Thats the place. George Clooneys
villa. Im afraid I cant tell if hes in.
These were the
words of our courier,
Thomas, sent out to
accompany a party
of aged Brits in their
conquest of Lake
Como and other
tourist hotspots.
Now along here,
just after this tunnel
isNo, I wont spoil
it for you. I did not
know this till today and our driver Roberto has
just told me about it. Its along here on the
left No, its after this set of traffic lights
Oh no, not those. No, this is the place. At
the end of this wall, there is a gate Thats
it. Maybe we should reverse and look for
ourselves. Well, maybe not today Oh, there
it is. If you look through that gate, you could
see a drive running down to the lake. There.
That was where Berlusconi used to hold his
bunga-bunga parties. Sorry, we were going
just a little too fast Oh and just up here on
the right, a very famous English actor. I am
sorry I dont know his name but hes going
to buy a villa here.
APPRECIATE
Dont get me wrong. I can fully appreciate
the attractions of a holiday villa by Lake Como
so I suppose I can congratulate myself upon
having chosen this bit of Italy for a summer
break. Keeping company with the great and
the good. Well, with the wealthy anyhow, not
that my few hundred pounds a week budget
will get me much further than looking over
peoples garden walls.
It is nice though, Lake Como that is.
We stayed on the left hand side of the
lake, Menaggio to be exact. Now you may
not know it but Menaggio is famous. Well,
close to being famous anyway. For here
well not very far from here, Benito Mussolini
was taken by the partisans as a German troop
column was pushing its way up the western
shore road in late April 1945, fleeing the Allies
as they were entering Milan forty miles south.
The locals stopped the column, unaware
that Benito was in it along with his mistress,
Clara Petacci disguised as a German soldier
on the back of one of the lorries heading for
the mountains and a possible last stand.
The lorries were persuaded to turn round in
a village square at Dongo and then, captured
under the nearby aptly named rock Musso,
Mussolini was dragged out to be executed in
the village square.
DUMPED
The dead Italian dictator was then carried
down to Milan for a second, more public,
execution. He was dumped in a market place
where his corpse and that of Clara were
violated before being strung up by the feet on
a market stall. According to Thomas, somewhere in the vicinity of Dongo is a plaque
stating that near here someone famous died.
Apparently the notice is really that bland and
hard to find since it is designed to prevent
latter-day fascists from using it as a shrine.
Oh, I forgot to mention that close to

Dongo is the only island on Lake Como, the

Isola Comacina. Here we found the Villa del
Balbienello whose beautiful gardens and
elaborately decorated house were paid for
by its 20th century owner, the explorer Guido
Monzino. The house was full of memorabilia
from various expeditions. Monzino was the
first Italian to climb Everest in 1973, two
years after leading an expedition to the North
Pole. Monzino, in fact, seemed rather short
of things to do other than climb high places
or penetrate difficult terrain.
He would have been gratified had he lived
beyond 1988 to know that on the shore by
his house Richard Branson owns a villa. Or
is said to own a villa, You cant miss it.
Ees the one with the long red brick wall over
there, said our guide Alessandria. Zees
house was also used for the James Bond
film Casino Royale.
RUNNING
James Bond spent a lot of time on Lake
Como, running through gardens and being
shot at. Or driving up and down the winding
roads above Tirano, the railway town at the
foot of the Alps where the Berne Express
chugs its way up to St Moritz. He was mentioned so much in connection with every
beauty spot and winding road, I came to
believe that he was a real person.
Luckily for my sense of reality, real celebrities still exist. Also in the vicinity, Madonna
had a residence and Gianni Versace still has
one. Sorry, got that wrong. Versace died in
1997 shot down outside his Miami Beach
home. Thats the problem with celebrity, you
see. So many villas to choose from and just

occasionally you make the mistake of being

at the wrong one at the wrong time.
Or not being in your Lake Como villa when
Thomas is driving around with his bunch of
tourists.
I shouldnt be mean. We saw a lot of
wonderful places.
Most beautiful of all perhaps for me was
Lake Maggiore and the fabulous Isola Bella.
Here the garden was built by Carlo IV in
memory of his ancestors wife, Isabella.
They were developed in the 17th century in
the Italianate style, all symmetry and order. In
the early 18th century a new, English, style of
garden emerged. Chief among its exponents
was Lancelot Capability Brown who preferred to create a natural effect with flowing
lawns and flowers amid stretches of water.
ECHOES
I like the way that the design of gardens
echoes changes in mens thoughts and
attitudes. The eighteenth century begins in
order and complacency. Men are living in
the best of all worlds in the best of all times.
By the end of the century, the world is in
political, social and industrial revolution, from
America to France and beyond, and suddenly
the world is a threatening place. Art changes
from third person contemplation of the wonders of the world to first person agonising
about its faults.
For a while man believed he ran the world
and the world was his servant. This delusion
is what makes Lake Como such a lovely
place. It offers nothing but guilt-free pleasure
and contentment, especially for celebrities.

Police Apologize For G-20 Protest Death

LONDON police apologized last month to
the family of a British newspaper vendor
who died after an officer hit him with a
baton during demonstrations against a
Group of 20 meeting in 2009. The force
said it had reached an out-of-court settlement with the family.
Officer Simon Harwood hit 47-yearold Ian Tomlinson and shoved him to
the ground as Tomlinson tried to leave
a cordon put up to contain protesters in
Londons financial district. Tomlinson
collapsed and died moments later.
Scotland Yard said a settlement had
been reached that acknowledged the suffering Tomlinsons family has endured
with dignity over the last four years.
I apologize unreservedly for Simon
Harwoods use of excessive and unlawful force, which caused Mr Tomlinsons
death, and for the suffering and distress
caused to his family as a result, Deputy
Assistant Commissioner Maxine de Brunner said in a statement.
ACQUITTED
Harwood was tried and acquitted of
manslaughter, but later fired after a police disciplinary panel ruled this actions
amounted to gross misconduct. That
panel had declined to consider whether
Harwoods actions contributed to Tomlinsons death prompting accusations
of a whitewash from Tomlinsons family.
De Brunner added that she took full
responsibility for Harwoods actions.
Tomlinsons death became a rallying
point for those who alleged police had
brutalized demonstrators.

Tomlinsons widow, Julia, said last

month that the police apology was as
close as we are going to get to justice.
It will always be painful for us that Ian
died so violently, but at least he is at rest
now, and the force has publicly acknowledged the truth, she said.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

When Do I Have To
File These US Tax
Returns?
NO, APRIL 15 is not the answer were
looking for! What Im thinking about here
is the year you first arrive in the US, when
the chances are high that you wont arrive
on January 1!
Many people organize their US visits to
avoid the requirement to file details of their
worldwide income to the IRS. Obviously
if youre coming here to live, this is not a
possibility, but you will need to know when
your liability will start.
The US rules for deciding if someone
has been in the country long enough during
a year to be resident for tax purposes, are
quite complicated. (Please remember here,
that your tax status and immigration status
may not be the same its much easier
to become due to pay tax here than to be
allowed to stay!) The simple part applies
if you have been here for over 183 days,
but since thats half a year, it doesnt come
as much surprise! Also, you can be tax
resident if you are here for at least 31 days
in a year, and the total of your days this
year, one-third of your days last year and
one-sixth of your days in the year before
that is more than 183 days. This calculation is known as the substantial presence
test and it will generally apply if you are
in the US for four months or more on a
regular basis. Its possible to overcome the
results of the test if you are paying taxes as
a resident in another country and you have
a closer connection with that country.
To claim this closer connection, you
need to file Form 8840 with the IRS. I hope

it wont surprise you to learn that you cant

just decide on the closer connection yourself and not file anything! Also, of course,
you would have to file a non-resident
return with any US-source income on it,
but you would not have to include your
worldwide income.
People who become subject to US tax
during a year, will have both resident and
non-resident status at different times. This
is known as being a dual-status alien
in IRS jargon. (Isnt it amazing how the
US government hasnt yet realized that
the word alien doesnt sound so great!)
The IRS want to have returns covering
a whole calendar year, so these people
should (but often dont!) file two tax returns
for the first year one would be a nonresident return covering the period up to
their entry date. But from this date, you are
due to declare your worldwide income and
file a US resident tax return, together with
any state tax returns, if you live in a state
with income tax.
Some restrictions to deductions, exemptions and allowances that apply for
these years and different rules again apply
if you married a US citizen or green card
holder during the year. My underlying message is not to think, Well, Ive only been
in the US for a few months, how difficult
can my tax return be? Be warned there
may be more issues than in future years!
Mary-Heather Styles is finding it difficult to
reconcile how long she has been working in
tax (over 30 years) and being called Miss in
stores (clearly many visually impaired people
working in retail in Arizona!) She is qualified
in tax law in both the US and UK and would be
pleased to deal with your queries. She can be
contacted at (602) 845-1420 or at mhstyles@

asks him to marry her. Although Peter accepts, its left to Carla to splash out on her

she wants him out of Fayes life. And after

away and lies to say hes got a new job
elsewhere. But Faye isnt the only one wholl
be sad to see her dad go, hes currently
making an impression on Sally Webster and
has fair turned her head after giving her the
glad-eye in the pub.
And finally this month, David ups his evil
plan to split up Nick and Leanne after finding out that Nick could be the dad of Kylies
baby. David gets Nicks Bistro into all sorts
of trouble by watering down the spirits and
alerting Trading Standards, stealing cash
from the till and leaving critical reviews online.
But the worst is yet to come as David writes
an anonymous poison pen-letter to send to
Nicks wife Leanne, asking her if she knows
where her husband was on Christmas Day,
and with whom. Ooh, therell be trouble when
it all comes out.

Report: UK Family Living

Standards Dropping
By Danica Kirka
POOR FAMILIES in Britain are struggling
to provide basics for their children as the
cost of living rises faster than wages and
benefits, research released by a charity
suggested last month.
The cost of raising a child during the
first 18 years of life rose four percent to
148,105 last year, while average earnings
rose 1.5 percent and safety net benefits rose
one percent, according to the report from
the Child Poverty Action Group.
This research paints a stark picture of
families being squeezed by rising prices
and stagnant wages, yet receiving everdiminishing support from the government
over the course of the last year, said Alison Garnham, the groups chief executive.
Every parent knows its getting harder to
pay for the essentials their children need,
and they dont feel like politicians see them
as a priority.
The report comes as Britains coalition
government, elected in 2010, imposes
tough austerity measures to reduce the
nations budget deficit. Those programs
include limiting benefit increases to one
percent annually for three years, forcing
many low-income residents to pay local
council tax for the first time, and a new

fee for public housing tenants with spare

bedrooms.
Treasury chief George Osborne has
acknowledged that the recovery is taking
longer than anyone hoped, but says that
tackling the deficit will be better for the
country in the long run despite the short
term pain.
Child poverty advocates argue that
such measures hit families hard and
that safeguarding families should be the
governments priority. Looking at the
numbers in economic isolation without
considering the impact of such policies
on children wont help the economy, they
say, because families under strain wont
be able to spend in the local community
or save for the future.
Low-income families have been hit especially hard by higher world commodity
prices, because basic items such as groceries and heating bills take up a larger portion
of their incomes, according to the report.
Rising costs for public transportation and
public housing also fall disproportionately
on the poor.
At the same time, safety-net benefits
were cut in real terms for the first time
since the 1930s, rather than rising by at
least the rate of inflation, the report said.

PM Speaks To Spanish Leader Over Gibraltar

the British enclave of Gibraltar, officials said.

Peter Capaldi
Named As Next
Doctor Who Star

By Jill Lawless
SCOTTISH actor
Peter Capaldi is the
next star of the longrunning science fiction series Doctor
Who, the BBC announced last month.
The identity of
the new Doctor had
been the subject of
frantic speculation,
and the revelation was made with fanfare
befitting one of Britains best-known
shows, during a live suppertime television
broadcast.
The 55-year-old Capaldi is best known
as venom-spitting spin doctor Malcolm
Tucker in political sitcom The Thick of It
and its film spin-off, In the Loop.
He has a long list of movie, television
and stage credits, from the 1983 film Local
Hero to the BBCs recent newsroom drama
The Hour. Hes also an Oscar winner he
directed Franz Kafkas Its a Wonderful
Life, which won the Academy Award for
best short film in 1994.
TARDIS
Capaldi is the 12th actor to play the
Doctor, a galaxy-hopping Time Lord
who travels in the Tardis, a time machine
shaped like an old-fashioned British police
telephone booth.
Doctor Who was first broadcast in 1963
and is now one of the BBCs most popular
programs, both in Britain and abroad.
Its longevity is due partly to the flexibility of the premise. The Doctor can
regenerate into new bodies and can travel
to any point in space or time.
Doctor Who ran from 1963 to 1989, and
was revived to acclaim in 2005. Since then,
the Doctor has been played by Christopher
Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith,
who took the part in 2010.
Capaldi, a fan of the show since childhood, said that being asked to play the
Doctor is an amazing privilege.
Like the Doctor himself I find myself
in a state of utter terror and delight, he
said.
Smith will leave after a November episode to mark the shows 50th anniversary,
and a Christmas special.

border checks.
Spain has long laid claim to Gibraltar, and the tiny territory on the
southern tip of the Iberian peninsula
is the source of occasional diplomatic
friction between Madrid and London.
REEF
The latest spat involves an artificial
reef being built in Gibraltar that Spain
says is hurting its fishermen. It has
floated the idea of charging border
fees as compensation.
In the phone call, Cameron stressed
that the issue should not damage bilat-

eral relations but added there was a

real risk that could happen unless
the border situation improved, according to the prime ministers office.
Rajoy agreed that he did not want
the issue to become an obstacle in the
bilateral relations and that we needed
to find a way to de-escalate the issue,
it said.
It added that the Spanish premier
committed to reducing measures at
the border and both sides agreed on
the need for a solution to the fishing
dispute.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

DeLorean - Part 2
I Was Standing on the edge of my toilet
hanging a clock. The porcelain was wet, I
slipped, hit my head on the sink, and when
I came to I had a revelation! A vision! A
picture in my head! A picture of this!
REMEMBER this quote from the Back to the
Future movie? Well that revelation was time
travel, and the vision was from Doc E mmett
Brown. Well, Stephen Wynne must have
had a similar revelation, not a flux capacitor
exactly but a vision into the future, when he
decided to revive the DeLorean DMC-12.
A motor mechanic by trade, Liverpool born
Stephen Wynne immigrated to the United
States in 1982 and started a motor repair
facility specializing in the repair of British
and French cars. In 1982 he was approached
by a DeLorean owner who needed repairs
to his car, Wynne recognized the Renault
drivetrain and other components commonly
found on other cars his company normally
serviced were compatible with the vehicle
so the repair of the DeLorean was second
nature. Word quickly spread throughout the
DeLorean owners community and soon his
specialist customer base grew.
To further support this growth a second
location in Houston, Texas was opened
in 1988. This location was also a central
United States location for DeLorean owners
who wished to have their cars professionally
serviced and repaired but who may have been
reluctant to send their cars to the California
Location.
Soon after the closure of the DeLorean

Motor Company in Northern Ireland in 1983

a company in Columbus, Ohio had bought
the remaining inventory of parts, tooling and
the complete engineering blueprints plus
other company documents with the idea of
fulfilling the part needs of DeLorean owners
and service centers. In 1997 Stephen Wynne
acquired what remained of this inventory
along with exclusive distribution rights, as
well as the tooling, engineering drawings and
company records.
After acquiring the original company name
DeLorean Motor Company, Stephen Wynne
relocated the original Houston facility to a
larger purpose built facility located close
by Houstons Bush Intercontinental Airport
(IAH). This 40,000 square foot warehouse
which includes showrooms and offices can
facilitate up to 80 DeLorean cars along with
their entire spare parts inventory including
re-manufactured stainless steel frames, new,
old stock and original equipment manufactured parts. Newly assembled DeLorean
DMC-12s have been available since the
second quarter of 2008. Since then additional
franchise facilities besides the Texas and
California ones have been added in Florida,

So, what does re-manufacturing a DeLorean DMC-12 entail? They are literally rebuilt
from the ground up. The process starts with
a donor car, then the original epoxy coated
steel frame is replaced with a re-designed
stainless steel version. The reason for this,
is the epoxy coating on the original steel one
was prone to cracking and causing corrosion as the moisture is trapped inside. The
original glass fiber engine compartment is
replaced with a more aesthetically designed
one, plus, new suspension and new stainless
steel doors are fitted. Then, new glass and a
re-wired electronics package incorporating
modern improvements, I-pod, and Bluetooth
etc are installed. Various choices of engine
and gearboxes are available to boost the
original 130hp power plant to modern performance specifications and, finally the interior
trimmings are renewed. They also have an
all-electric model in the works, DMCev.
So, basically you end up with a brand
new car with the original registration and
identification number. Its corrosion proof
too, even more so than the original. Style
wise, it is identical to the original and lets
face it the DeLorean DMC-12 has already
become a classic and is destined to remain
so, largely due to Steven Spielbergs Back to
the Future trilogy. Besides the movies though
the DMC-12 was destined to become classic
has it had its own singular history with the
John DeLorean cocaine smuggling entrapment case, plus the fact that the car was
lauded as being somewhat corrosion proof
and could last forever.
The original was largely underpowered but
this new version addresses that aspect. It is
Giugiaro designed and that will never change,
so styling and aesthetics are assured. The
cost for a fully rebuilt car starts at $57,500;
additional options at differing prices include:
choice of engine and transmission, plus a
choice of interior electronics. A 6,000 mile
or six-month warranty is included. Not too
bad, considering you end up with a classic,
age proof design to modern day standards.
A time capsule so to speak, that could propel
one into a future way beyond the 2015 date
that Doc and Marty experienced.
The original DeLorean factory in N Ireland
has long gone, the great John DeLorean
passed away in 2005, but this new DeLorean
DMC-12 could very well make it through to
the next century. So, hats off to Stephen and
Cameron Wynne for ensuring the continuance of a classic. It is not a car of the future
but could very well be the car for the future,
and will probably still look good well into the
future. Who knows, it may have a real flux
capacitor fitted inside the car in our lifetime.

DeLorean visit http://delorean.com

For Sale: London Tube Station With History

By Jill Lawless

THE PROPERTYS location

cant be bettered, but the
view from some of the rooms
leaves a bit to be desired.
Buyers seeking a base in one of Londons wealthiest neighborhoods have the
chance to purchase an unusual piece of
property: a disused London subway station
that housed the citys anti-aircraft defenses
during World War II.
Brompton Road station is being sold by
the Ministry of Defense, which bought the
building after it was closed to passengers
in the 1930s.
The ministry, which is selling several
properties and laying off thousands of
soldiers in a cost-cutting drive, says the
building has been declared surplus to
requirements and will be put on sale
this month.
It is expected to fetch about 20m. That
buys 28,000 square feet of above ground
and underground space.
The site includes a station building
covered in the distinctive oxblood-colored
tiles of London Undergrounds Piccadilly
Line. The ministry said the interior includes a drill hall, garages, offices and
mess, as well as elevator shafts and underground passages though not the subway
tunnels, which remain in use and belong
to Londons transit operator.
The station is near to the historic

Brompton Oratory church and the ritzy

Harrods department store. It opened in
1906 but turned out to be too close to other
stations to attract many passengers, and
was closed in 1934.
BLITZ
In 1936 it was bought by the government and became an army anti-aircraft
headquarters, protecting London from
German bombers during the Blitz.
The building is still used by the military, housing air and naval units from the
University of London and an Air Training
Corps squadron.
Simon Hodson of real estate agents

Jones Lang LaSalle said last month that

the prime central London site provides
an excellent redevelopment opportunity.
A firm called the Old London Underground Company has expressed an interest
in buying the station and turning it into a
restaurant and entertainment venue.
Brompton Road is one of several abandoned subway stations in London. Many
are derelict, although Aldwych station has
been preserved as a location for filming
period dramas, and the former Hyde Park
Corner station building was a restaurant
and jazz club until it closed in 2010.

BRITISH POLICE say they are examining newly received information relating
to the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi
Fayed, and that officers are assessing the
informations relevance and credibility.
Scotland Yard declined to provide
details about the information, only saying
last month in a statement that the assessment will be carried out by officers from
its specialist crime and operations unit.

The force stressed that it was not reopening the investigation into the 1997
deaths of Diana and Fayed, who were
killed in a car crash in Paris.
In 2008, a British jury ruled that Diana,
the Princess of Wales, and her companion,
Fayed, were unlawfully killed due to reckless speed and drinking by their driver,
and by the reckless pursuit of paparazzi
chasing them.

I AM planning to go to England on the 16th

for a couple of weeks to visit my brother
in lovely Market Harborough, and then
to my oldest friend (we were in school
together many, many years ago!), who
has a delightful B&B in Sussex. During
a visit several years ago, she took me to
the Hungry Monk Pub, nearby her home,
where the Banofee pie originated. It was
so heavenly and decadent, and I featured
the recipe when I returned to the States.
The one thing about the original recipe,
calls for boiling two unopened tins of
condensed milk for two hours, to make the
toffee/caramel. However I was too nervous
to do that envisioning having toffee all over
the kitchen if it burst! I improvised and
made it on the stove top instead.
This recipe is based on one that I found
in a BBC Good Food magazine, (my annual treat is one years subscription), it
is a great magazine and I used it a lot for
referral, however nowadays, it presents the
more modern recipes and way of cooking,
and not so much of the old. It is interesting
though and I do enjoy it.
This recipe is a much lighter and
easier version of Banofee Pie, and is a
cheesecake.
It also does not include a hint of coffee
in it as the original, but there is no reason
you couldnt add it if wanted. Also it makes
a light and easy caramel toffee sauce. The
cake can be frozen without the bananas
and sauce, but I usually dont have any left
over to freeze! I hope you like my version.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Melt the butter
and add to the crushed biscuit crumbs until
evenly mixed. Wrap a nine inch spring form
pan with aluminium foil, about half way up.
Press down the crumbs firmly and evenly
(I find using a potato masher helps to tap
down evenly). Chill for 10-15 minutes.
Take the Mascarpone, sugar, cornstarch, eggs, coffee and vanilla, and beat
until thick and smooth. Place the spring
form pan on a baking tray. Pour the filling
into the pan, and bake for 45-60 minutes,
it may still wobble a bit but will set as it

Banofee Cheesecake

1/2 cup butter

1 cup crushed biscuits, (ginger ones
make a nice flavour, also digestive/
graham cracker)
1 lbs of Mascarpone cheese
1/4 cup sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
3 large eggs
1-2 tsp strong coffee (optional)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Topping:
2 Tbsp butter
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 cup heavy whipping cream
and
1 cups heavy whipping cream
3 medium bananas, just ripened
cools. Turn off the oven, open the door and
leave the cheesecake in until cold.
Make a toffee/caramel sauce by gently
heating the butter, sugar and one cup
cream in a small pan until the sugar has
dissolved, gently simmer a few minutes,
then set aside.
Remove cooled cheesecake from the
oven. Lightly whip the 1 cups cream, and
swirl over the cheesecake. Peel and slice
the bananas, and sit them on the cream,
then drizzle all the toffee/caramel sauce
over all the top. Yield 10-12.

MORE BRANSON in our back yard! Virgin

Hotels, a division of UK mogul Sir Richard
Bransons Virgin Group, just opened an
office in Miami, sharing a space with another of his Florida-based businesses Virgin
Mobile Latin America. The Miami Herald reported that Virgin Hotels wants to develop at
least two hotels in Fort Lauderdale or Miami,
quoting CEO Raul Leal said. When Virgin
Hotels formed in 2010, it aimed to target
Miami as part of its plan to invest $500m in
the acquisition and transformation of 150-to
400-room urban hotel properties in the USA.
Sir Richard visits Miami often (en route down
to his Necker Island in the British Virgin
Islands.) and he owns a condo in Miami.
n TAMPA AREA The annual All British
Car Show and Autojumble takes place along
Main Street in Safety Harbor, presented by
Ferman Mini of Tampa Bay. As with previous years, the street will be filled with over
200 British cars classic and modern, plus
a DJ, raffle, vendors, British regalia and
food. Free admission. Funds raised benefit
a charity. Includes awards where you can
vote for your favourite British car. October

n SEEKING MORE BRITS! I just
joined the Miami Ski Club (the second largest in the USA) but not to ski. Many British
people reading this ski of course were a

nation of skiers with the Alps next door. So

it would be neat to have some fellow Brit
members. Established decades ago, the
club organizes super all-inclusive varied
trips to snowy places across the USA and
over to famed European skiing spots, plus
local Florida trips too. It has a large eclectic
Miami-Ft Lauderdale membership of all
ages and professions, males and females.
Many members dont ski at all because
the Club is also known for its range of
travel and social events. I have never had
the opportunity to ski and not daft enough
to risk it now, so joined specifically to go
on their trip to famous Steamboat Springs
Colorado in March 2014. Im aching to roll
in some snow after 20 years in the Tropics! Anybody want to be my Steamboat
Springs travel partner? The club organizes
everything. Being active and adventurous,
Ill try snow-mobiling and various wintery
activities abounding at Steamboat Springs
with Club and Chaletmates. Plus the aprsski done with glass in hand will appeal to
us sociable Brits! We share roomy chalets,
so camaraderie is guaranteed, but you can
pay extra for a single chalet. Any other Brits
want to come more the merrier? (Theres
also a club long weekend trip October 18

BRITAINS unemployment rate held

steady at 7.8 percent in the April to June
quarter, officials statistics showed last in
July, though the country created 69,000
jobs as the economy began to grow after
the worst recession since the 1930s.
The number of people claiming jobless
benefits fell by 29,200 to 1.4 million, the
Office of National Statistics said. Over the
year, those seeking Jobseekers Allowance
was down 145,400, the lowest number of
such claimants since February 2009.
The figures released last month were
being closely watched after the Bank of
England said last month that it probably
wont raise the benchmark interest rate until
unemployment falls below seven percent.

Mogul To Launch Easyfoodstore

STELIOS HAJI-IOANNOU, founder
of European discount airline easyJet, is
planning to open a budget supermarket to
cater for cash-strapped shoppers, launching an easyFoodstore in south London, the
company said last month.
But the store, to be opened in Croydon
at the end of the year, will be markedly
different from most of Britains leading
supermarkets: Nothing on sale will be fresh
or frozen. The 50-to-100 different types of
tinned meats, packaged pasta and plastic
bottled sauces on sale are meant to serve
basic needs of a country suffering from the
impact of government austerity measures.
Haji-Ioannou described the store an
effort to serve gap in the market a niche
below Aldi and Lidl, the current leading
European budget supermarket operators.
My interest in the food retailing business was sparked by recent press stories
covering the widespread use of food banks
by the needy and my own experience with
the food from the heart charitable program operated by my philanthropic foundation in Cyprus, he said in a statement
posted on the domain, easyfoodstore.com

The easyFoodstore is a pilot project that

will be located on the ground floor of a
building that will also house other easy
brands in Haji-Ioannous business empire:
An easyHotel, and easyOffice and possibly

an easyGym. Much of the details remain

sketchy. The Times of London broke
the story over the weekend, pushing the
company to discuss details of the proposal
earlier than planned.

Saving Saffron
Sweeting
By Pauline Wiles

WHAT A wonderful, fun read this is! Grab a

copy and toss it in your carry on or beach
bag.
Grace Palmer and all her friends think
shes living the dream world in
California. Grace soon discovers
that her husband is having an
affair with a coworker of his and
her world seems to fall apart.
She decides to chuck it all in
and runs home to England. She
doesnt want to tell her Mum and
Dad what has happened so she
stays with her brother and his
wife for a day when she lands
and then sets off to try and figure
things out. Grace finds herself in
the village of Saffron Sweeting. She checks
into a B&B and takes in the town. She takes
a liking to the place and decides to stay for
a while but what will she do for money as
she only has so much saved up. Her husband
has been trying to contact her and apologizes,
tells her that it was only once and means

nothing. She doesnt know what to believe

and is just too torn and tells him she needs
time so sort it out.
While at an estate agents looking for a
rental she overhears the estate agent trying
to explain some of the differences between
American and English properties. Grace excuses herself as she joins the conversation
and explains to the visitors what the differences are and the advantages. As she has
been living in the states for some time she has
a good understanding of what is expected by
the Americans and how to explain things easily. The agent ends up offering her a job since
she sold the original prospects and there will
be many more as a huge biomedical firm has
just opened in an industrial estate near the
village. She discovers that the village is really
struggling and because she has becomes
very fond of the little village she starts helping
the local businesses adapt and
change to attract more business
and to survive.
She is adopted by a local
dog owned by a local business
owner who doesnt seem to like
Grace and that in and of itself is
a funny story. There are many
laughs and stumbles along the
way in this great story. The shop
owners are great and all have
their little idiosyncrasies and she
meets and dates someone else
(without success). I wont say any more as
I dont want to give it all away. Great ending
that leaves you wanting more.
I read it in one day and would recommend
to all. You dont have to sit and wonder and
psychoanalyze everything. Just a great read.
Dont miss it!

Rihanna Wins Case Against UK Retailer Topshop

POP SINGER Rihanna has won a court
case in Britain against retailer Topshop,
which was selling T-shirts bearing her
image without permission.
High Court Justice Colin Birss ruled
in favor of the singer last month, saying
buyers were likely deceived by believing
Rihanna had authorized its sale.
Birss also said the sales caused a loss
of control over Rihannas reputation in the
fashion realm, where the singer has been
trying to carve out a name as a designer.
She has a clothing line in her name at a

rival store.
The shirts were first sold as the Rihanna Tank. After her complaints, they
were sold as being the Headscarf Girl
Tank and the Icon Tank.
Topshops owner, Arcadia Group
Brands Ltd., had argued that Rihanna was
seeking legal recognition for a flawed assumption that only a celebrity could market
a product bearing his or her image.
Topshop said it was surprised and disappointed by the ruling and was considering
an appeal.

OBITUARIES

Comedy Duo Star Mike Winters

MIKE WINTERS,
82, was the straight man
to his brother, Bernie,
in the comedy double
act, Mike and Bernie
Winters died last month.
The brothers were
pioneers of television
comedy, first appearing on Britains screens
in 1955 on the BBC show Variety Parade,
before becoming regulars on programmes
such as Big Night Out and Sunday Night At
The London Palladium. In 1965 they won
their own comedy show on ITV.
Mike was the suave, pipe-smoking
member of the duo, referred to as Choochie-Face by his brother Bernie, a lovable
buffoon with a gormless grin and the
cheery catchphrase: Ill smash yer face
in. Known for his sophisticated wordplay,
for example Bernie would confuse vowels with bowels, while Mike would
play the conservative, sensible one. Many
wondered why the pair were so popular.
When rival comedian duo Morecambe
and Wise were once asked what they
would have done had they flopped in show

business, they replied: Wed have been

Mike and Bernie Winters.
Their ITV show ran for eight years,
regularly reaching the top three in the ratings and attracting guest stars such as Tom
Jones and The Beatles, who appeared on
the programme three times.
The brothers continued to work together, but in 1978 they fell out, allegedly
over Bernies long-running affair with a
dancer 20 years his junior. While Bernie
dreamed up a new act starring a new partner, his St Bernard dog Schnorbitz, and
became a regular on television shows such
as Punchlines and Give Us A Clue, Mike
abandoned showbusiness and emigrated
to Florida to become a businessman; he
also did work for charity and wrote several
books including a memoir, The Sunny Side
Of Winters (2010). He eventually retired
to Gloucestershire.
Although he and his brother never
worked together again, they made their
peace before Bernies death in 1991.
In 1955, Mike Winters married Cassie
Chaney, a fashion designer, who survives
him with their two children.

British Admiral Who Led Falklands Fleet

ADMIRAL JOHN SANDY

WOODWARD, 81, who led the Royal
Navy task force during the 1982 Falklands War.
In announcing his death last month,
Britains defense ministry did not give a
cause. But the BBC said Woodward died
after a long illness.
Prime Minister David Cameron said
Woodward was a truly courageous and
decisive leader.
We are indebted to him for his many
years of service and the vital role he played
to ensure that the people of the Falkland
Islands can still today live in peace and
freedom, Cameron said.
A career sailor who joined the navy
at 13 and rose to command submarines,
Woodward was in charge of the naval
force dispatched by then-Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher after Argentina seized
the South Atlantic islands, home to some
2,000 British residents, in April 1982.

Britain retook the territory 10 weeks

later, after a war that killed 649 Argentines,
255 British troops and three islanders.
One of Woodwards most contentious
decisions was the sinking of the Argentine
warship General Belgrano, killing 323 of
its crew. It was a turning point in the war,
but the attack was controversial because
the ship appeared to be leaving the British
exclusion zone when it was sunk.
Knighted by the Queen after the war,
Woodward later published a book about
the conflict, One Hundred Days.
He had recently spoken out against
cuts to Britains armed forces, which he
said would make it impossible for Britain
to recapture the Falklands if they were
invaded again.
Woodward was later deputy chief of the
defense staff before taking up a ceremonial post as flag aide-de camp to Queen
Elizabeth II.

US-Russia Tensions
Wont Hurt Sochi Games
By Stephen Wilson
THE WINTER OLYMPICS in Sochi
should not be affected by the heightened
political tensions between the United States
and Russia over Edward Snowden, gay
rights and other issues, a vice president of
the IOC said last month.
If there are political tensions arising,
it wouldnt be the first time before an
Olympic Games, and in the main, Olympic
Games overcome political tensions, IOC
vice president Craig Reedie of Britain told
The Associated Press.
Reedie downplayed the impact of President Barack Obamas decision to call off
a Moscow summit with Russian President
Vladimir Putin. The snub follows Russias
decision to grant asylum to Snowden, the
National Security Agency leaker, in defiance of Obamas repeated requests.
Obamas decision also reflects strained
ties with Russia over missile defense,
Syria, human rights and other issues. He
canceled the summit with Putin exactly six
months before the start of the Olympics in
the Black Sea resort of Sochi in southern
Russia.
ENCOURAGES
I think the games are quite clearly an
occasion which encourages peace among
nations and Im pretty sure, despite pressures at the moment, thats what will appear to the world in February next year,
Reedie said in a telephone interview.
Reedie also cited the global situation
before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt
Lake City, which were held just months
after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks

in New York and Washington.

There must have been a question
mark over that after what happened to
New York, and the games went ahead,
Reedie said.
The International Olympic Committee
official also said the 2008 Beijing Olympics were a triumph despite the pregames controversies over Chinas record
on human rights, Tibet and press freedoms.
EARLY
Its happened twice in recent years,
Reedie said. I think its far too early to
say whats going on at the moment is going
to be massively problematic.
The buildup to the Sochi Games,
scheduled for February 7-23, has also
been overshadowed recently by criticism
of Russias new anti-gay legislation. The
law, which was signed by Putin in June,
bans propaganda of nontraditional sexual
relations.
Obama said he had no patience with
countries which discriminate against gay
people.
While some critics have called for a
boycott of the Sochi Olympics, the IOC is
quietly negotiating with Russian officials
to make sure the law does not affect the
games. Russia is also hosting the world
track and field championships, which start
Saturday in Moscow.
I would hope wise counsel would be
taken because they (Russia) have much
to gain from a successful world athletics
championships and have much to gain
from a successful Olympic Games and
(2018) World Cup, Reedie said. It is in
their interests to have a decade of sport.

Rugby Chiefs Trial New Scrum Laws

STARTING with last months Bledisloe
Cup match between Australia and New
Zealand in the Rugby Championship,
new laws regarding the so-called scrum
engagement sequence that has been such
a blight to the game began trials.
Championed by IRB chief executive
Brett Gosper as a positive change that
enhances player welfare and scrum stability, referees are replacing the current
crouch, touch, set command with a new
directive crouch, bind, set.
Instead of the previous first-up power
collisions between front rows that often
resulted in collapses, props must first bind
using their outside arms until the scrum has

Adlingtons Four
Olympic Medals
Found After Burglary

FORMER British swimmer Rebecca

Adlingtons two Olympic gold medals
and two bronze have been recovered after
a burglary at her home in Manchester.
Adlington wrote on Twitter beforehand
that she was in absolute pieces. But she
tweeted 30 minutes later that her medals
have been found. Im so relieved.
The burglary happened last month when
Adlington and her fiance were in London.
Her fiances car and laptop were stolen in
the robbery.
Adlington won freestyle gold in the 400
and 800 meters at the 2008 Beijing Games,
and took bronze in the same races last year

a stable platform. Then, when the referee

says set, the packs can push forward and
compete for possession.
COMMITMENT
It sounds good in theory, as does a
renewed commitment by the IRB to a
stricter policing of the feed into the scrum
another bugbear of many rugby followers. But it remains to be seen whether this
latest law change is the solution to an ageold problem or yet another failed attempt
to rescue one of the sports dying arts as
teams find new ways to cheat the system.
The revised sequence has the potential
to reduce forces on engagement at the elite
level by 25 percent, therefore promoting
long-term benefits, the IRB said in a
statement outlining the new directives,
which will be introduced in the northern
hemisphere in September.
There are conflicting views over whether the law changes will benefit the traditionally powerful scrummaging nations,
such as England, Argentina and South
Africa, or put them at a disadvantage.
The IRBs top 21 referees gathered at
French rugbys headquarters in Marcoussis last month for a behind-the-scenes
workshop to finalize the management of
the new engagement sequence.

Snooker Officials Look

Into Unusual Betting
SNOOKER officials are looking into
unusual betting patterns during two
Shanghai Masters qualifying matches.
The matches under scrutiny saw Ross
Muir of Scotland beat Thai player Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon 5-0, and another
Thai player, Passakorn Suwannawat, lose
5-4 to Mohamed Khairy of Egypt.
The World Professional Billiards and
Snooker Association says it was made
aware of the unusual betting patterns in
the matches on Wednesday in Doncaster,
England.
The statement on the official World
Snooker website added that the WPBSA
is liaising with Britains Gambling Commission to establish the available facts
surrounding betting on these matches, and
a decision will then be made regarding
any further action necessary.

Dempsey Leaves
England, Joins
Seattle Sounders
CLINT DEMPSEYS six-year spell
in English football has come to an
end after Tottenham announced
last month it had reached an agreement with Major League Soccer to
transfer the United States forward
to the Seattle Sounders.
Dempsey was introduced as the
newest designated player for the
Sounders August 4 prior to Seattles
match against FC Dallas.
British media reported that his
move to Seattle Sounders is for
around 6m.
One of the most successful Americans to play in Englands top
league, Dempsey spent five years
playing at Fulham, where he scored
50 goals in 184 league appearances
and became a fan favorite. Last year
with Tottenham, Dempsey scored
seven goals in 29 Premier League
matches, scored three times in two
FA Cup matches and had two more
goals in 10 other games.

Hot Spot Inventor

Calls For Removal
Of Bat Coating
By Steve Douglas

PROTECTIVE coating should be removed from cricket bats for Hot Spot
to achieve optimum results, the technologys inventor has said.
The current Ashes series between England and Australia has been
blighted by a string of contentious decisions, with Hot Spots thermalimaging cameras appearing not to detect some edges behind.
Warren Brennan, the managing director of the company which owns
Hot Spot, carried out internal testing last month and said he achieved
conclusive findings.
The type and thickness of the protective coating unquestionably affects the thermal signature of the Hot Spot system, BBG Sports said in a
statement. In laymans terms, the protective coating definitely diminishes
Hot Spot marks.
BBG Sports believes that in order to achieve optimum Hot Spot results,
then the removal of protective coating from bats edges needs to occur,
the statement continued. This will allow for the best thermal signatures
between cricket balls and natural timber cricket bats.
EMBARRASSING
Former England captain Alec Stewart labeled Brennans comments
embarrassing, telling the BBC that tapes and coatings have been on bats
for decades and that Brennan needs to take his technology back to the
nets to remove the current flaws.
I dont think Hot Spot can carry on, as bat manufacturers arent going
to change, added Michael Vaughan, another ex-England skipper. Hes
admitted that his system doesnt work in this era of cricket. It has to go.
Brennan says he will pass results of tests carried out last month to the
International Cricket Council.
Hot Spot became part of the Decision Review System from 2009, but only
in this series have doubts crept in about the effectiveness of the technology.
Australian broadcaster Channel Nine
claimed that silicon
tape might have been
attached to the edges
of bats during the Ashes series to fool Hot
Spot. Those allegations have been angrily denied by England
and Australia, and the
ICC isnt investigating
the claims.

English FA Pushing
For Penalty Technology
By Rob Harris
HAVING successfully persuaded FIFA to
introduce goal-line technology, the English
Football Association now wants cameras
to be allowed to settle other contentious
situations in games.
New FA chairman Greg Dyke says it
is a no-brainer that referees should be
permitted to defer to video replays for
penalty and offside decisions.
While England is just one of the 209
FIFA members, its opinions on rulechanges carry more weight as a member
of the sports closed rule-making panel.
The International Football Association
Board only approved goal-line technology
after FIFA President Sepp Blatter reversed
his long-standing opposition to it following
the 2010 World Cup.

was in top form at the Bridgestone Invitational
at Akron, Ohio, shooting a 61 on the second
round. Woods finished with a 15 under 265,
seven strokes clear of his nearest rival.
Golf pundits and bookies considered
Tiger Woods favourite to win the last Major
of 2013, the PGA Championship at Oak Hill,
Pittsford, NY, August 8-11, especially after
the Tiger had notched up five PGA victories
this year. The sporting media made no mention of Floridas Jason Dufner, who broke
the course record on the second round with
a seven under 63, and kept to a menu of
fairways and greens to win his first Major
tournament. The 36-year-old Dufner, who
has been chided for his rotundity, finished
on a 10 under 270, two strokes ahead of
Jim Furyk. Top finishing Brits was Rory
McIIroy and Graeme McDowell, who were
both joint eighth with a three under 277. Tiger
was four over par.

Tennis: Montreal Frustration

For The Brits
Jamie Murray and Australian partner John
Peers captured the mens doubles title at the
Swiss Open in Gstaad.British number three
Johanna Konta, won the Winnipeg Open and
the Vancouver Open on the second tier procircuit. Andy Murray playing his first tennis
since his Wimbledon victory at the Rogers
Cup in Montreal, overcame Spaniard Marcel
Granollers in his first match, but went out in
straight sets to Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, the
following round. He teamed up with Colin
Fleming in the doubles, but the British pair
were beaten in the final 6-4, 7-6 (7-6) by
Alexander Peya of Austria and Bruno Soares
of Brazil. Heather Watson has ditched her
coach Mauricio Hadad and is working with
Jeremy Bates, but failed to qualify for the
Rogers Cup. Laura Robson reached the
third round of the Southern California Open,
before losing to Petra Kvita, but pulled out
of the Rogers Cup through Injury..Former
British number one Anne Keothaveng,
has announced her retirement from tennis
in favour of a broadcasting career. The
28-year-old who has suffered a series of
career knee injuries had never won an ATP
event, but won 20 times on the International
Tennis Federation circuitAndy Murray
overcame Mikhail Youzhy of Russia, Julien
Benneteau of France in the Cincinnati Open,
but went out in the quarter-finals to the Czech,
Tomas Berdych.

Boxing & Formula One

A stamina sapping encounter with Australias Daniel Geale, at Atlantic City, August
17, witnessed Darren Barker (26-1) earn
a split-decision to become the IBF World
middleweight champion. The Aussie (29-1)
had the Barnet fighter down in the sixth round,
but Barker took the fight to his opponent,
afterwards calling him a tough, tough man.
Same weekend in Cardiff, unbeaten Welsh-

man Nathan Cleverly (26-0)

lost his WBO light-heavyweight
crown to the unbeaten Russian,
Sergey Kovalev (22- 0-1). Cleverly cut Kovalev earlier on, but
the Russian put the Caerphilly
born boxer on the canvas twice
during the third round, and by
the fourth, the ref stepped in and
stopped it.
After nine Formula One races this year
without a British winner, Lewis Hamilton
took the pole position at the Hungarian Grand
Prix late July, and turned it into victory. After
the trauma of the tyres at Silverstone, and a
recent break-up with his girlfriend his attitude
may have been suspect, but Hamilton drove
skillfully and aggressively for his first victory
of 2013. Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian
Vettel were second and third.

a race commemorating Genghis Khans

the defending champion, Simon Whitlock of
Australia, 11-6, in the final.

England-Scotland Thriller

A series of FIFA inspired international

friendlies took place August 14,much to
the chagrin of Europes top club coaches
who did not need the possibilities of injuries
prior to the start of the new season through
a series of, as they see it, inconsequential
exhibition games. England and Scotland
faced each other for the 111th time and for
the first time in 14 years. England has won
45 times to Scotlands 41, with the rest being
drawn. Scotland won the last encounter with
Don Hutchinsons only goal of the game at
Wembley in 1999, during the 2000 EuroChampionships play-offs. Wayne Rooney
who had not participated in any of Manchester Uniteds preseason fixtures was in
the starting line-up, and played until the 67th
minute, where he became one of the eleven
players substituted during the game. A fullhouse at Wembley, saw England come from
behind twice to win 3-2, where a thoroughly
eye pleasing and entertaining match provided
value for money. James Morrison put the
Scots ahead in the 11th minute, while Theo
Walcott equalized eighteen minutes later.
Kenny Miller got one in the 49th minute, then
Danny Welbeck hit back four minutes later.
Rickie Lambert found Englands winner
Wales welcomed the Republic of Ireland

looking dangerous. Other friendly results

The United States captured the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Soldiers Field Chicago,
late July, beating Panama 1-0 in the final.
Panama had beaten Mexico twice in this
years competition, resulting in an evenly
fought final, before Brek Shea grabbed the
winner in the 68th minute. Clint Dempsey
after six years in the EPL with Fulham and
Tottenham, has returned to the MLS having
signed with the Seattle Sounders. The Americans continued their winning streak, notching
up 12 consecutive victories at Sarajevo,
August 14, against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
They came from 2-0 down at half-time to
win the encounter 4-3. Eddie Johnson put
the US on the scoreboard, followed by Jozy
Altidore (recently signed by Sunderland)
who scored a hat-trick.

Elfsborg, fielded Mohamed Bangura who

is on loan to the Swedish champions from
Parkhead. We pay his wages, and he will

both sides hit the woodwork, before a 77th
minute header from Kris Commons gave the
hoops a 1-0 home advantage. The second leg
witnessed a game where both goalkeepers
were not pressed, and a goalless draw put
Celtic through.
The Europa Cup, third qualifying round,
August 1 and 8, had Malmo, fresh off
their 7-0 demolition of Hibernian at Easter
Road, looking for further success at the
Liberty Stadium. The tussle with Swansea
City would be very different however, and
the Welsh side playing their first European
football since 1992, pulled out the stops for a
convincing 4-0 win. Michu put the Swans on
the scoreboard in the 37th minute, Wilfried
Bony got two in the space of five minutes and
Pozuelo added one, four minutes from time.
In Sweden, the Swans forged a goalless draw
and go through to the next round.
St Johnstone travelled to Grodno, Belarus,
to face FC Minsk, where a 4,000 plus crowd
watched in horror as Stevie Maclean, found
the net in the 69th minute for the only goal
of the game. At Perth, in the second leg
however, it was Minsk who scored the only
goal fifteen minutes from the whistle. The
game went to a penalty shootout following
the 1-1 aggregate, with the visitors taking
the honours 3-2.
Despair and trauma at Fir Park, where
Motherwell went 2-0 down against Kuban
Krasnadar, after a brace by Ivelin Popov in
the 52nd and 78th minutes, that left coach
Stuart McCall, severely stunned. In Russia,
Stephen McManus headed past his own
keeper in the 50th minute that put paid to
the Steelmans Euro-dream, while the 1-0
loss makes it the second consecutive year
that the Scots have crashed out at the first
European hurdle.

World Cup 2014

Northern Ireland played their rescheduled

World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park, August
14, youll remember the original March
game was snowed out. The Ulstermen have
not claimed victory in 13 games, but coach
Martin ONeil, finally earned his first success after ten games in charge, producing a
1-0 win over Russia. Former England coach
Fabio Capello, now in charge at Russia,
must have thought the visit would not be
completely wasted, but a Martin Paterson
netting two minutes before half-time proved
enough Concerns over Brazils ability
to be ready for the 2014 World Cup, were
mouthed by Brazilian Sports Minister Aldo
Rebelo, who complained that only one of the
new six stadiums under construction are on
schedule to be finished before the tournament
opens next year. Rebelo says there is no more
money available and contractors need to be
pushing their staff harder.

The Americans Keeps Winning

The FA Community Shield played at

Wembley, August 10, pitted English champions Manchester United against the FA
Cup winners Wigan Athletic for what used
to be the traditional opening of the English
soccer season. It gave David Moyes his first
competitive match as the new coach, and as
it turned out, his first trophy too. Wigan were
relegated to the Championship, and as such,
the Reds were heavily favoured. A double by
the goal poaching Robin van Persie, in the
sixth and fifty ninth minute sealed a 2-0 win
for United, though Wigans midfield provided
lots of problems for the Old Trafford outfit.
Earlier, the first round of the Capital One
English League Cup, August 5, saw the
Premier League sides excluded, but some
championship teams endured defeat from the
lower divisions. Second division Accrington
Stanley, just two years from a non-league
side, went to Middlesbrough, and won 2-1.
Newport County, recently promoted from the
Conference was at Hove, and came away
3-1 winners over Brighton. Stevenage eliminated Ipswich 2-0, and Carlisle knocked out
Blackburn in a penalty shootout after theyd
finished three apiece. Wolves who have slid
from the Premier to the Championship and
then to Division One in successive seasons,
fell to a goal by Ryan Williams, six minute
from the end at Morecambe, which proved
the only goal of the game. Peterborough
provided the goal feast of the round with a
5-1 win at Colchester.

Millwall Forgets To Bring Kit

To Away Game

CHAMPIONSHIP club Millwall looked far from

its usual self August 26 after it forgot to bring
the team kit for an away game and had to
borrow its opponents.
Millwall, which normally plays in white on
the road, was forced to line up in Sheffield
Wednesdays yellow away kit from last year
when the Lions somehow left their own at
home in south London.
Millwall then managed to get its orange
third kit to Hillsborough in time for the second
half and changed clothes at halftime.

Scottish soccer appeared to have reached

an agreement after the Scottish FA, the SPL
and the Scottish League decided on a formula
for the coming season. The top tier will be
known as the Scottish Premiership, followed
by the Scottish Championship, followed by
Scottish Division One and Two. Relegation
and promotion will start at the bottom of
Division Two.
The first round of the Ramsden Challenge
Cup, that excludes premier league sides,
but does include two Junior sides in the
mix started the new Scottish soccer season
off late July. Ramsden Cup Holders Queen
of the South, clobbered Highland League
side Spartans 4-0, but the other junior club,
Formantine Utd, beat East Stirling 2-0. Second divisions Annan Athletic knocked out
championship trenders Morton with the only
goal of the game, while fellow second division
compatriots, Peterhead, prevailed 2-1 over
Brechin City and Berwick topped Livingston 3-2. Airdrie Utd, has recently reverted
back to its old monica, the Airdrieonians,
and overcame Hamilton Academicals 2-1.
Rangers strode through the first round with a
convincing 4-0 destruction at Albion Rovers.
Rangers off-field situation remains complicated with a group of shareholders demanding
a meeting and the resignation of the present
board-members. Former CEO Charles Green
is back with the club as a consultant, and told
coach Ally McCoist he needs both a league
and cup double this year. Later, Chairman
Walter Smith resigned. The first round of the
Scottish Communities League Cup, August
3, produced more aggravation for the club,
when Forfar Athletic, beat the Ibrox outfit 2-1
at Station Park. Gavin Swankie put the hosts

scored a late equalizer. As the match went in
to extra-time, Swankie hit his second and the
winner in the 115th minute. McCoist, who
cannot play any of his summer signings until
September, was pretty upset. Lots of goals at
East Fife, who were holding Morton 2-2 before
the extra-time period, then Archie Campbell
hit four to give the visitors a 6-2 win. Raith
Rovers hit six too, without reply in their home
fixture against Queens Park.
Celtic commenced the defence of their
Scottish championship with a 2-1 home
win against Ross County, and 2-0 win at
Aberdeen. Stranraer were looking forward
for a financial lift with the arrival of Rangers
for the first Division One match of the season,
August 11, but the city council stepped in and
cut the 6,000 plus capacity by half because
of safety concerns. A small sellout crowd
watched Rangers win 3-0, after Stranraers
Chris Aitken was sent-off.

Late Soccer
The first leg of the play-off round for
the group stage of the Champions League,
August 20-21, saw Celtic travel to Kazakhstan, to meet Shakter Karagandy. A goal in
each half gave the hosts a 2-0 result, but
the Hoops came close several times and
the result could have been very different.
Neil Lennon remained positive the reversal
could be changed at the second leg at Parkhead A rsenal went to Istanbul where their
opponents Fenerbahce are appealing a disqualification from European competition that
strangely enough, will not be decided until
both legs of this tie are played. After a blistering EPL home defeat against Aston Villa, the
Gunners came out with all barrels firing and in
a rather physical encounter came away 3-0
winners. The marksmen were Kieran Gibbs,
Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.
The first leg play-off round of the Europa
Cup, August 22, saw Tottenham tear apart
Dinamo Tbilisi, 5-0 in Georgia. Aaron
Townsend got the goals started, followed
by Paulinho, a brace by Robert Soldado,
finishing with a Danny Rose netting. At
the Liberty stadium, Swansea dismantled
Petrolul Ploiesti 5-1. Wayne Routledge got
two, Michu hit the net, followed by an own
goal, then Alejandro Pozuelo got the fifth.
The Romanians got a consolation goal three
minutes from time.
Highland League club Formantine United,
forged a place in the third round of the Ramsden Scottish Challenge Cup, August 21, with
a convincing 5-1 home demolition of second
divisions Elgin City. Cameron Keith got a
hat-trick, while Sean Crighton put Elgin on
the board, but was later sent off.

New Zealand Horse Rider

Dies In England Event
British Eventing said that 26-year-old New
Zealand rider Tom Gadsby was killed in a fall at
the Somerford Park International Horse Trials
in England last month.
Gadsby was competing in the cross-country section of the three-day endurance event
when his mount fell while jumping a fence.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Toms
family and close friends at this very sad time,
said BE chief executive Mike EtheringtonSmith. The world of eventing is a closely knit
community and everyone will be shocked and
deeply saddened.
Gadsby was riding a seven-year-old gelding
that was not injured during the incident.
Tom was a talented show jumper and
eventer who was in Europe to fulfill his dream
of competing as a professional event rider a
dream he achieved but which has been tragically cut short, said Equestrain Sports New
Zealand chief executive Jim Ellis.

Arsenal: An early strike from
Oliver Giroud and a pair of goals
by Lucas Podolski powered the
Gunners past Fulham, 3-1, at
Craven Cottage. The Gunners were beaten at
home by Villa, 3-1, after Giroud scored in the
sixth minute. Two crucial fouls were called on
Laurent Koscielny, who was sent off midway
through the second half after conceding a
penalty kick by which Villa took the lead.
Aston Villa: Christian Bentekes
equalizer at Chelsea matched an own
goal by Antonio Luna; two minutes
after Benteke had been felled by
a Branislav Ivanovic arm swing, Ivanovic
scored the goal that sent Villa to a 2-1 defeat.
Benteke scored twice as Villa opened the
season in grand fashion by belting Arsenal,
3-1, at the Emirates Stadium. Benteke scored
on the rebound of his own saved penalty kick
and then converted one on the first attempt
to give Villa the lead. Luna scored late to
complete the win.
Cardiff City: Hello, Premier
League! Fraizer Campbell scored
two late goals in eight minutes to
complete a comeback as Cardiff
marked their home debut in this top
flight by belting Manchester City, 3-2. Aron
Gunnarssons goal on the hour tied the match
and Campbell escaped his marker in the 79th
and 87th minutes to claim an historic win. The
new era: first season in the top division since
1962 began with a 2-0 loss at West Ham
in which substitute Nicky Maynard fluffed
a chance to score the teams first Premier
League goal when he looped a shot over the
bar in stoppage time.
Chelsea: Three saves by Peter
Cech, including a full-length flying
stop off a Wayne Rooney blast,
aided the cause in a 0-0 draw
at Manchester United. Branislav Ivanovics
winner for a 2-1 defeat of Aston Villa came
just two minutes after hed been cautioned
but not sent off for conking an opponents
head with his forearm. Chelsea took the
lead on an own goal in the sixth minute and
in first-half stoppage time conceded a tying
goal; Ivanovic headed home a Frank Lampard
free kick with Villa players and coaches
still insisting he should have been sent off.
Lampard scored after failing to convert an
early penalty kick, and after Oscars goal in
the 13th minute opened up a 1-0 lead against
Hull City.
Crystal Palace: Marouane
Chamakhs goal in the 31st
minute at Stoke City evaporated
during a four-minute spell in
the second half, and the Eagles
came home with a 2-1 loss. The return of
Premier League play following an eight-year
absence drew a crowd of 23,285 to Selhurst
Park, and despite some heroics by keeper
Julian Speroni the fans viewed a 1-0 loss to
Tottenham.
Everton: Manager Roberto
Martinez was still looking for his
first win at the club after Everton
outshot West Bromwich Albion 22-8 but were
held to a 0-0 result. Luke Daniels hit the post
in the final minutes. They had opened the
season with a 2-2 tie at Norwich; they rallied
with goals by Ross Barkley and Seamus Coleman four minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead,
but six minutes later conceded an equalizer.
Fulham: The Cottagers were thumped
at home, 3-1, by Arsenal and trailed, 3-0,

Pajtim Kasami headed home a Damien Duff
cross at the far post to score his first goal
since joining the club in 2011.
Hull City: Robert Bradys penalty kick midway through the first
half was enough for the Tigers
to gobble up Norwich City, 1-0,
despite playing a man down following Yannick Sagbos dismissal in the 27th minute.
Allen McGregor saved a penalty kick and got
the benefit of a correct goal-line technology
decision that showed a ball had not crossed
the goal line, but still Hull were beaten at
Chelsea, 2-0.
Liverpool: Daniel Sturridge
notched his second gamewinning goal in as many weekends as Liverpool won, 1-0, at
Aston Villa. Jose Enriques pass
put him in a good spot and Sturridge glided
past two defenders and rounded the keeper
to nudge it into the net. Simon Mignolets
penalty-kick save in the 89th minute preserved a 1-0 defeat of Stoke City; Sturridges
12th goal in 17 appearances since a 12m
move from Chelsea in January gave them the
lead, and Mignolet single-handedly retained
it by blocking the penalty kick as well as the
follow-up attempt.
Manchester City: Edin Dzekos
goal early in the second half put
City in front at Cardiff City but a
complete collapse enabled the
home team to take command and win, 3-2.
Alvaro Negredo got his first goal for the club
in stoppage time to narrow the final margin.
Dzeko was blanked but four teammates hit
the net as City drilled Newcastle United, 4-0.
David Silva started the rout with a goal in
the sixth minute and Sergio Aguero, Yaya
Toure, and Samir Nasri piled on the misery
for the visitors.
Manchester United: Wayne
Rooney Earned Man of the
Match honors for his committed
display in a 0-0 tie against Chelsea, which had put in two spurned transfer
offers for him. David Moyes started his
managerial reign with a 4-1 win at Swansea
City, courtesy of double strikes by Robin Van
Persie and Danny Wellbeck. Rooney came
on as a sub and assisted on Van Persies
second goal.
Newcastle United: Yoan
Gouffrans injury-time miss personified the Magpies frustration
in a 0-0 home draw with West
Ham. Sammy Ameobis cross bounced off
the inside of the post to Gouffran, who shot
over the bar from close range. The season
began in depressing fashion, a 4-0 loss at
Manchester City in which the Magpies managed just one shot on goal and lost Steven
Taylor to a red card in first-half stoppage time.
Norwich City: At home to Everton in the season opener, the
Canaries took a 1-0 lead, surrendered two goals to Everton in
four minutes, then grabbed a 2-2 draw with
a headed equalizer by record signing Ricky
Van Wolfswinkel. Right back Steven Whitaker
fought through two challenges to curl in a
left-footed shot against the post, then tapped
in the rebound. Six minutes after Everton took
the lead, the 8.5m-man headed home the
tying goal.
Southampton: After a conceding a goal

at home against Sunderland in

the third minute, Soton claimed
a point via Jose Fontes equalizer
in the 88th. A Rickie Lambert
penalty kick was enough to register a 1-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion on the opening
day of the season. Lambert converted in the
90th minute after Youssouf Mulumbu fouled
Luke Shaw.
Stoke City: Charlie Adam and
Ryan Shawcross scored four
minutes apart in the second half
to carry the Potters past Crystal
Palace, 2-1, to give Mark Hughes his first
Premier League win since May, 2012, when
he was with Queens Park Rangers. In a 1-0
loss at Liverpool, Jonathan Walters stepped
to the penalty spot in the 89th minute; his
low shot was saved and substitute Kenwyne
Jones shot from the rebound was saved
as well.
Sunderland: Emanuele Giaccherinis goal gave the Black
Cats a 1-0 lead in the third
minute at Southampton and they held onto
it a long time, but not long enough. An 88thminute equalizer left them with a 1-1 tie. The
Black Cats dominated at home in the opener
against Fulham, but five new signings and a
21-5 edge in shots couldnt avert a 1-0 loss
to Fulham.
Swansea City: Keeper Michael
Vorm turned aside six shots and
was beaten only by a penalty kick
in a 1-0 loss at Tottenham. The Swans suffered a rough start to the season, losing, 4-1,
at home to Manchester United. Wilifred Bony
got their goal in the 82nd minute.
Tottenham: Roberto Soldado
provided the winning goal from the
penalty spot for the second straight
week in a 1-0 defeat of Swansea
City. The 26m signing took his tally
to four goals from three games after Andros
Townsend went down to earn a dubious
penalty that Soldado converted. His penalty
kick five minutes into the second half earned
a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.
West Bromwich Albion: Ben
Foster bailed out the Baggies with
eight saves in a 0-0 draw at Everton,
though he hobbled off in the 78th
minute. West Brom opened the season at
home and went down, 1-0, to Southampton
on a penalty kick awarded when Youssouf
Mulumbu, whod been cautioned eight minutes earlier, committed a foul in the penalty
area in the last minute of regulation.
West Ham United: Outshot
16-6 at Newcastle, the Hammers
nevertheless came back with a
0-0 tie. Stewart Downing shot
straight at the keeper to record the games
only attempt on target. Joe Cole and Kevin
Nolan scored in each half in the Hammers
opener, a 2-0 home triumph over Premier
League debutants Cardiff City.

Anelka Back In Training

At West Brom
NICHOLAS ANELKAS career and time
at West Bromwich Albion nearly ended
before it began last month.
The 34-year-old striker moved from
Juventus on a Bosman recently, but 49
days after his arrival at the Hawthorns
he walked out of the club. No problems
were reported other than personal reasons
of grief. But, within a week Anelka had
resumed training with West Brom.
It was reported the ex-France forward
left the club, as he was stricken by the
grief of his agent Eric Manasse dying, and
told West Brom boss Steve Clarke he was
considering quitting football.
But the former Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid man was now back and
preparing for the teams next game.

Double Gold For Mo

Farah, Ohuruoga
Just Makes It!

THE WORLD ATHLETIC Championship at

Moscow, August 10-18, witnessed Britains
double Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000m
and 5,000m, Mo Farah, claim the gold medal
in the same events becoming the first Briton
to win a World Championship medal at these
distances. Christine Ohuruoga took the gold
medal in the 400m, but it was a close run
thing. She crossed the line with Amantle
Montsho of Botswana, and only a photo
finish could separate them. Ohuruoga got
the verdict by four thousandths of a second.
She would later add a bronze to her gold
in the womens 4x400m relay with Eillidh
Child, Shana Cox and Margaret Adeoye.
Tiffany Porter grabbed a bronze in the 100m
hurdles. The flying Jamaican, Usain Bolt,
pronounced himself the world fastest man in
the world when he collected the gold medal
in both the 100m and the 200m and a third
gold in Jamaicas relay squad. The mens
4x100m relay team were celebrating a bronze
medal, when news came that officials had
disqualified the Britons for a changeover that
had occurred outside the box. The womens
4x100m squad finished fourth, but lodged a
complaint that Hayley Jones was impeded by
a French runner. It was accepted, the French
removed, and the team of Diner AsherSmith, Ashleigh Nelson, Hayley Jones
and Annabelle Lewis got the bronze, even
though the medals ceremony had already
taken place.

England Retain The Ashes

After losing the first two Tests, Australia

took a breather from the Ashes with a three
day game at Hove. They got some much
needed batting practice in before the game
against Sussex, ended drawn. Australia 366
(Steven Smith 102 not out)-5 dec and 152-2
at close. Sussex 368 (James Taylor 121 not
out)-7 dec. The Australians appeared to have
the third Test at Old Trafford under control. It
was a game they needed to win to keep their

hopes alive for a series victory, but rain on

the fourth and fifth day impeded such hopes,
and the match was drawn. Leaving just two
Tests to play, the best the Aussies could do
was to tie the series. Australia 527 (Michael
Clarke 187)-7 dec and 172-7 dec. England
368 (Kevin Pietersen 113) and 37-2 at close.
The fourth Test at Chester-le-Street, Durham,

with four overs left to play and six wickets
still standing. The umpires shut the match
down for bad-light however and the game
was drawn, leaving England 3-0 winners
of this Ashes series. Australia 492 (Shane
Watson 176, Steven Smith 138 not out) -9
dec and 111-6 dec. England 377 and 296-5
at close of play.
In the County Championship, Yorkshire
led Division One mid-August, having won five
of their eleven games with 158pts. Sussex
are chasing with 148pts. Lancashire with
166pts, lead Northants by twenty points,
having won six of their eleven matches.
Misery for Surrey and Leicestershire who
remain winless.
Northamptonshire won the first domestic
trophy of the season, beating Surrey by 102
runs using the D/L method at Edgbaston in the
final of the Friends Life Twenty20 Cup. Rain
played havoc with the schedule. Northants
194-2 @ 18 overs. Surrey 92 all out.

LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers says

the clubs dispute with Luis Suarez has been
resolved following an offseason dominated
by transfer speculation involving the Uruguay
striker. Suarez disappointed Rodgers by going public with his desire to leave Liverpool
after Premier League rival Arsenal made a bid
in excess of 40m for the player.
However, Suarez returned to first-team
training last month and was applauded by
fans when he attended Liverpools 1-0 win
at Stoke, a match he missed because of
suspension.
Rodgers says I am satisfied with how
everything has been resolved and we as a
club are looking to the future.
Rodgers added that Suarez is smiling and
happy and well move on.

Hull Owner Changing EPL

Clubs Common Name

HULL CITY will begin life in the Premier

League with a new name, Hull City Tigers,
because the owner thinks the existing one
is common.
Owner Assem Allamis is rebranding the
club while also removing the Association
Football Club moniker which has been part
of the name since 1904.
The Egyptian-born businessman told
the Hull Daily Mail newspaper: Hull City is
irrelevant. My dislike for the word City is
because it is common. City is also associated with Leicester, Bristol, Manchester and
many other clubs.
Describing City as a lousy identity, Allamis said: I dont like being like everyone
else. I want the club to be special. It is about
identity.
Allam took over the northeast England
club in 2010 following its relegation from the
Premier League.

Newcastle Signs Striker Remy

On Loan From QPR

NEWCASTLE has signed French striker Loic

Remy on a season-long loan from Queens
Park Rangers, strengthening its attack ahead
of the Premier League season.
Remy joined QPR in the January transfer
window and scored six goals in 14 appearances, but couldnt prevent the London club
being relegated to the League Championship.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said
Remy will be a great addition to the squad,
he gives us strength and pace up front and
Im sure hell bring plenty of goals.

Argentina
Struggle Against
South Africa

AT THIS time of year, you have to look south

to find any real action to the southern
hemispheres Rugby Championship.
Argentina put in an excellent set of displays
in their dbut season last year, drawing with
South Africa and getting to 23-19 in their
away fixture against Australia.
This year, however, reality is beginning
to bite back. Santiago Phelans side went
to Soweto in mid-August where they were
on the receiving end of a sporting massacre
going down 73-13, the biggest margin of
victory anywhere in the Championships
17-year history.
For the return leg in Mendoza, the Pumas
massively changed their team stripping out
the heart of the scrum in a search for power
and control. In their 13 meetings since the
fixture was inaugurated in 1994, five of which
have been played at home, the Pumas have
lost every time, with the exception of last
years draw.
The changes nearly did the trick with the
home side heading for a dramatic victory. But
two late penalties from Morne Steyn saved
the Springboks bacon in a 22-17 scoreline.
All Blacks Retain Supremacy Over
Australia
Australia last won the Bledisloe Cup twelve
years ago. This is a two-match series against
New Zealand and the Wallabies have been on
the losing end again this season.
Last months first game was a home
fixture for new coach Ewen McKenzie and a
lesson in relentlessness that characterises
All Black rugby. They stormed home 47-29
winners and ensured the Aussies would have
another year to wait for the chance of getting
their hands on the Bledisloe. Three of their six
tries were scored by Ben Smith.
In the second match in Wellington, the All
Blacks emerged victors yet again, this time
27-16, their sheer power and commitment,
allied to technical excellence ensuring a clear
difference between the sides for the twelfth
year on the trot. Smith again supplied the All
Black tries, taking a pair. For the Wallabies
Israel Folau again impressed scoring a late interception try but it was too little and too late.
Australia have taken on a daunting task
in their tour
this autumn. They are aiming
