CHANCELLORS BUDGET

UK Austerity To Stay Despite Growth Pick-Up

AUSTERITY WILL remain the
UK governments mantra, Treasury chief George Osborne said
last month even as he lauded the
stronger than expected economic
recovery.
With one eye on the general election in
just over a year, Osborne sought to sweeten
his budget statement with an effective tax
cut for all and sweeping changes to the
countrys pensions and savings. But there
were no big giveaways, with promises like
that likely for the run-up to the election.
Faster growth alone will not balance
the books, he said. Securing Britains
economic future means there will have to
be more hard decisions, more cuts.
RADICAL
In perhaps his most radical announcement, Osborne has loosened the rules on
savings plans for retirement accounts a
measure that may appeal to older voters,
many of whom form the base of his Conservative Party and are being tempted by
the rival, UK Independence Party. Other
tax changes, such as raising the level at
which individuals pay tax, should, he
hopes, appeal to all.
The big hope for the Conservatives,

At Midnight Hour, UK Holds First Same-Sex Weddings

By Jill Lawless
GAY COUPLES in Britain waited decades
for the right to get married. When the opportunity came, it took just a few minutes
to make history.
Londoners Sean Adl-Tabatabai and
Sinclair Treadway were among the first to
tie the knot when Britains new marriage
law came into effect March 29.
The two men wed in front of about 100
guests at their local town hall in the London borough of Camden one of several
locales holding late-night ceremonies to
mark the occasion. By 10 minutes past
midnight they were married, with a kiss
and a registrars declaration: You are now
husband and husband.
Its a sign of a profound shift in attitudes
in a country that little more than a decade
ago had a law on the books banning the
promotion of homosexuality.
Some people say, You gays are trying
to redefine marriage, but the definition
of marriage has already changed, said
Treadway, a 20-year-old student originally
from Los Angeles. Now its between two
people who love each other.
Most Britons agree. Polls show about
two-thirds of people in the country back
gay unions, and support is highest among
the young. Britain has seen none of the
large street protests against gay marriage
that have taken place in France.
Same-sex marriage has been welcomed

with enthusiasm by Britains Conservative-led government. Rainbow flags went

up over two government buildings Friday
in what Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg
called a small symbol to celebrate a massive achievement.
Treadway and Adl-Tabatabai, a 32-yearold TV producer from London, were married by the mayor of Camden, Jonathan
Simpson, who declared the occasion a

country and also a big acknowledgment

Its amazing and surreal, Adl-Tabatabai said. It did feel like a historic moment.

it really hit me.

British Regulator Axes

Offensive Pistorius Ad
BRITAINS advertising regulator has told
a betting firm to withdraw an ad featuring
a picture of Oscar Pistorius and the slogan:
Its Oscar time. Money back if he walks.
The Advertising Standards Authority
said last month that 5,200 people had complained about the promo for bookmaker
Paddy Power, an unprecedented number
of complaints.
Tens of thousands of people backed an
online campaign accusing the ad of trivializing violence against women.
The regulator said the advertisement,
which featured an image of the double
amputee runner mocked up to resemble
an Academy Awards statuette, could cause
serious and/or widespread offense.
Pistorius is on trial in South Africa,
charged with the murder of his girlfriend,
Reeva Steenkamp. She was shot dead last
year at the athletes home in what he says
was an accident.

Selfies And Sellotape Create

New Viral Facebook Craze

ITS NOT just a selfie that attracts on Facebook any more now, with the generous use
of sellotape on ones face, we have a new viral online craze.
Within days of its launch, more than 100,000 people are following the Sellotape
Selfies page on Facebook last month.
And thousands of them have been wrapping tape
around their face to make themselves look like
grotesque ogres. They then upload their bizarre
picture to Facebook and nominate a friend to take
part in the challenge as well.
It was started by Lizzie Durley, 21, who is studying international event management at Brighton
University. I got the idea from Jim Carreys office
scene in Yes Man, she says. I was having a bad
day and remembered that scene from the film which
really tickled me.
I figured people were getting bored of the whole

and the countrys deepest recession since
World War II.
Following a raft of upgrades to the
UKs economic outlook, Osborne said
independent forecasts from the Office of
Budget Responsibility point to 2.7 percent
growth this year, up from the previous 2.4
percent prediction.
RECOVERED
In fact, Osborne said the prediction is
that the UK economy will have finally
recovered the output lost during the recession later this year. Osborne also lauded
forecasts that the UKs budget deficit will
narrow and actually turn to a small surplus
by 2018/19.
But Ed Miliband, the leader of the
opposition Labour Party, said the government had failed to achieve the economic
targets it set when coming to power in
2010, particularly on the deficit-reduction
front, and quickly challenged claims the
budget will help those struggling with
tough economic times.
The annual budget statement is a setpiece event in the British political calendar
and is often laced with measures designed
to offer a talking point to Britons up and

Salmond:
Independent
Scotland Would
Not Be Foreign
By Jill Lawless
SCOTLANDS leader took his call for
independence to the heart of opposition
territory in London last month, arguing
that a separate Scotland would not be a
foreign country to England.
First Minister Alex Salmond told an
audience in Londons political district
that UK Treasury chief George Osborne
had made a monumental error when
he said an independent Scotland could
not keep the pound as its currency.
Scots will vote in an independence
referendum on September 18. Salmond
says a yes will mean a country with
its own passports, taxes and policies
including an end to unpopular welfare
cuts.
But he wants to retain Britains currency and its queen, as well as European
Union membership.
Scotland will not be a foreign country after independence, any more than
Ireland, Northern Ireland, England or
Wales can ever be foreign countries to
Scotland, said Salmond, who argued
an independent Scotland would be a
counterbalance to Londons economic
dominance.
MISTAKE
He said Osbornes sermon on the
pound would come to be seen as a big
mistake, and ejecting Scotland from the
currency would leave the remainder of
Britain holding the countrys entire debt
of more than 1 trillion ($1.67 trillion).
Most polls suggest a majority of Scottish voters oppose independence, but
Salmond said the gap was narrowing.
If youve got a positive message
up against a negative message, then
you will win, he told an enthusiastic
audience at the event, sponsored by the
left-leaning New Statesman magazine.
But not everyone was convinced.
University researcher Anne Laybourne wondered what Salmond would
do for her home region of Caithness in
the far north of Scotland, which has a
rickety railway and a hospital threatened
with closure.
If I had a vote, I would probably vote

RRTony Benn, Labour Party

And Socialist Dead At 88
TONY BENN, a committed British
socialist who irritated and fascinated
Britons through a political career spanning more than five decades and who
renounced his aristocratic title rather than
leave the House of
Commons, has died.
His family said in
a statement that Benn
died peacefully at his home in west
London. It did not give a cause for death.
Labour Party leader Ed Miliband
praised Benn as iconic figure of our
age who will be remembered as a
champion of the powerless, a great
parliamentarian and a politician of great
conviction.
Tony Benn spoke his mind and
spoke up for his values. Whether you
agreed with him or disagreed with him,
everyone knew where he stood and
what he stood for, Miliband said. For
someone of such strong views, often at
odds with his party, he won respect from
across the political spectrum. This was
because of his unshakeable beliefs and

say they concede there is insufficient
evidence to back their claims that British soldiers unlawfully killed civilians
in southern Iraq in 2004.
Britains Al-Sweady Inquiry is investigating claims that up to 20 Iraqis were
tortured and killed at a base in Maysan
province after a battle between British
troops and insurgents. It is named for
one of the dead, 19-year-old Hamid
al-Sweady.
The British military denies abuse and
says the dead were killed in battle.
Public Interest Lawyers which represents families of the alleged victims
conceded last month there is insufficient evidence to support a finding of
unlawful killing, but that there remain
numerous allegations of violence and
ill-treatment of Iraqi civilians for the
inquiry to consider.
The inquiry findings will be published in November.

ANOTHER royal baby? Britains Prince

William says no thanks at least for the
time being.
Asked whether he and his wife, Kate,
are planning to expand their family,
William said: Maybe one day. Ones

A soldier asked the prince the question last month as the royal couple
visited the Irish Guards at their military
base in Aldershot in southern England
to mark St Patricks Day.
Kate, dressed in an emerald green
trench coat with matching hat and heels,
presented sprigs of shamrocks to around
300 soldiers on parade. She also placed
a bunch on the regimental mascot, Irish
wolfhound Domhnall.
William and Kates baby son, George,
will be joining them on their trip to New
Zealand and Australia this month.

Misbehaving Adults Ruin

School Closing Reunion

HUNDREDS of adults from 20 to 80 attended a farewell reunion to their old school

last month before it was to be demolished.
Sadly, some of them behaved like yobs
and hooligans by leaving walls covered in
graffiti, setting off fire alarms and smoking
in the toilets.
Police and firefighters had to be called to
the reunion at the old Orwell High School in
Felixstowe.
Most apparently enjoyed looking around
their old alma mater, seeing the memorabilia,
and catching up with long-lost friends from
their school days. But a certain number said
to be in their 40s and 50s deliberately and
repeatedly set off fire alarms and broke other
rules of the school.
Lewd pictures were drawn on walls, and it
is understood some of the current students
work was damaged. Eventually the building
had to be evacuated.
Jaimielee Rendall, who left the school in
2005 and now works for BBC Radio Suffolk,
said most people were well behaved but
some had been drinking since mid-afternoon.
Felixstowe Academy said in a statement :
Sadly a very small minority of adult visitors
took it upon themselves to smoke within
the building and write graffiti on the walls,
causing vandalism to an operating school.

MPs have been banned from keeping a

The Palace of Westminster, which is

Tens of thousands of pounds are paid

there have already been three mice sightings

But Commons chiefs rejected the cat
idea, saying pet-friendly MPs were likely to
feed the cat so many leftovers that it would
be too fat to do its job, reported the Evening

John Thurso, spokesman for the Commons Commission, said there were a number
of other practical problems with the plan.
He said: A cat would be at risk from the

New Bridges across the Thames due to be

completed within five years are changing the
dynamics of the capitals north-south property
divide by opening up the cheaper waterfront
districts that quickly evolve into fashionable
neighbourhoods.
Four new river crossings are planned for
London. A Diamond Jubilee pedestrian crossing between Chelsea and Battersea has been
approved, while another crossing for both
pedestrians and cyclists is planned between
Pimlico and Nine Elms. Meanwhile, the Garden
Bridge is set to be part of a leafy link between
Covent Garden and the South Bank, and Mayor
Boris Johnson is backing a campaign for a
road link between Beckton and Thamesmead
in east London. Some 17,000 new homes are
in the pipeline across these areas.
Traditionally, north bank homes have been
more desirable than those on the south bank
and up to twice as expensive. However, the
value gap is narrowing and some homes on
the south side now cost considerably more
than those they face across the water.
The Millennium Bridge, which opened in
2000 and provides a direct link between the
Tate Modern and St Pauls Cathedral, kickstarted this trend. Not only is the Norman
Foster-designed structure a thing of beauty, it
has helped catapult Bankside to what estate
agent Winkworth calls a Premier League
address.
The bridge has brought new public space
along with cafes, restaurants and galleries,
spawned smart new developments either
side of the river and even inspired a new train
station, Blackfriars South, with a solar-roof
concourse that floats above the Thames.

At least 236 buildings of 20 storeys or

more are currently in the pipeline, according
to detailed analysis by think-tank New London
Architecture.
It is the most concentrated burst of tower
building in Londons history, with 80 percent of
the new buildings designed for high-rise living.
Almost a fifth are already under construction and around half have planning approval.
A further 30 percent are awaiting council
approval.
The two highest buildings on the list are
the City Pride and Columbus towers, both in
east London, with planning permission for 75
storeys. Many of the planned towers are in the
regeneration zones of east and south London.
The findings of the survey are the subject
of an exhibition called Londons Growing
Up, which started last month at The Building
Centre, Bloomsbury.

Sherlock co-writer Mark Gatiss believes

that its stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin
Freeman will never turn their backs on the
show, no matter how successful they become.
The two Sherlock lead stars, who play
Holmes and Dr Watson in the hit BBC series,
have found themselves catapulted into international stardom.
Cumberbatch was the villain in the latest
Star Trek movie and was in the Oscar-winning
12 Years a Slave, while Freeman landed the
star role in The Hobbit. But Gatiss insists that
the actors will never be swayed by fame or
money and all that is holding up the next series
is clashing diaries.
He said: The will with those two is very

actors we cast have gone on to become two
of the most successful in the world, so it is
difficult to get everyone back together, especially as my co-writer Steven Moffat and I are
very busy too.

The event was attended by almost 200 pupils, all from London private schools belonging

FGM survivor Ifrah Ahmed, originally from

The conference came about when a prefect

The schools head of sixth form, Heidi Mester, said: The objective for the day was to give

Osbornes statement was no different.
A cut in the tax on beer could well raise a
cheer in the pub while a freeze on the duty
paid on gasoline will certainly be met with
relief at the pump.
Another attempt to grab the headlines
was a cut in the tax on bingo from 20 percent to 10 percent. Bingo has many female
fans in Britain, and the measure could be
seen as an effort to appeal to female voters,
particularly those at the bottom end of the
income scale.
ANOMALY
Osborne also promised that taxes on

ending an anomaly that gave Hawaii an advantage over the Caribbean, for example.
And in a move that will invoke nostalgia, Osborne showcased plans to replace
the pound coin with a 12-sided coin made
with two separate metals. It resembles
a threepenny bit, which circulated in
Britain from 1937-1971.
Miliband seized upon the change to

not being spread equally.
You can change the shape of the pound
but it doesnt matter if the pound is square,

age of 52.
The Rail, Maritime

said Crow, its general
secretary since 2002, died following a
heart attack.
One of the few British union leaders
to be a household name and recognizable
face, Crow led his union through a series of
disruptive strikes on Londons busy public
transit system.
Critics called him confrontational, and
he was a villain to right-wing newspapers,
but many union members saw him as a
leader who got results.
With his bald head and cloth cap, Crow
affected an old-fashioned, working-class
demeanor, but he faced criticism for his
six-figure salary and subsidized home.

New Inquests
Begin Into
Hillsborough
Disaster
By Rob Harris
AS LIVERPOOL closes in on a first
English league title in 24 years, fans are
returning to the clubs darkest day.
After years of campaigning to expose
wrongdoing by the authorities, new inquests into Britains worst sports disaster
began last month, with the families of
the 96 Liverpool fans crushed to death at
Hillsborough in 1989 seeking verdicts of
unlawful killing.
The original accidental death verdicts
were overturned by the High Court in
London in 2012 after a fresh tranche of
documents uncovered a cover-up by police
after the incident, which happened during Liverpools FA Cup semifinal match
against Nottingham Forest.
The crush took place after a standingonly section of the stadium for visiting
fans became overcrowded, and authorities
sought to place the blame on the victims
by characterizing the disaster as a result of
hooliganism. Liverpool fan groups maintain that police were to blame for herding
the fans into that section of the stands to
avoid over-crowding outside the stadium.
NERVOUS
The new hearings could take about a
year, with jury selection beginning March
31 at a purpose-built courtroom on a trading
estate in Warrington near Liverpool. Over
the next month, families will be able to tell
the jury about their relatives who died.
The fresh hearings come after the families have fought for more than two decades
to prove their claims that misconduct and
mistakes by authorities were responsible
for the deaths. Prime Minister David Cameron has already lambasted the failure of
the state to protect their loved ones and
denigration of the deceased.
Documents released in 2012 uncovered a
sophisticated attempt by police to shift the
blame onto the Liverpool fans by instructing
officers to change statements and insinuate
that many fans were drunk and had histories
of violence or criminality.
HERDED
Many of the fans died due to lack of
attention from police and emergency
services after about 2,000 supporters were
herded by officers into caged-in enclosures
that were already full. The jury will study
previously unseen video footage from the
day and a three-dimensional model of Hillsborough before visiting the ground where
Sheffield Wednesday still plays.
Inquests cannot determine criminal
liability for individuals, but a verdict of
unlawful killing would give families of
the victims a long-sought sense of vindication. Two criminal investigations are running parallel to the inquests, in which 22
people, including retired or current police
officers, have been identified as potential
suspects. Some suspects have already been
questioned on a range of offenses, including manslaughter, misconduct in a public
office and obstructing justice, according to
a police watchdog.
Weve done all our fighting, and we
know that my dad is innocent and all the
96 were innocent, said Amy McGlone,
whose father Alan died at Hillsborough.
Weve got most of the truth there now
and facts, McGlone added. People are
still walking around thinking that theyve
done nothing wrong when they have.

it as a pretended family relationship.
That law wasnt repealed until 2003.
Yet when Parliament legalized same-sex
marriage in July, it was by a wide margin
and with the backing of Conservative
Prime Minister David Cameron.
There was some heated rhetoric
mostly from traditionalists in Parliaments
unelected upper chamber, the House of
Lords but ordinary Britons overwhelmingly supported gay marriage.
Britain is the 15th country to legalize
same-sex marriage, which is also legal in
several US states. But the march of gay
rights is not universal several countries,
including Uganda and Russia, have recently introduced anti-gay laws.
In Britain, some argue that true equality
wont have been reached until a gay couple
can be married by a priest in Westminster Abbey, as Prince William and Kate
Middleton were in 2011. Some gay-rights
activists think embracing marriage is caving in to a heterosexist world order.

Bank Of England
Chief Grilled Over
Forex Scandal
BANK OF ENGLAND Governor Mark
Carney last month sought to shield his
institution from being dragged further into
a global scandal over the alleged manipulation of foreign exchange markets.
Regulators in Europe and the US are
investigating a number of banks in the
scandal, leading major firms like Citigroup
and Barclays to suspend traders. The
scandal touched the Bank of England last
month, when it said it suspended one of its
own employees.
Appearing before an influential committee of lawmakers to explain the situation,
Carney said there was no evidence so far
that staff at the Bank of England had also
colluded in market manipulation or in sharing confidential client information. The
suspension, he said, had only been made
pending further investigation.
SERIOUS
The scandal threatens to be more serious than the one surrounding the rigging
of the London interbank offered rate, or
Libor. The investigation into Libor, a key
rate underpinning transactions the world
over, resulted in billions in fines for the
banks implicated.
The UK lawmakers demanded to know
what was being done and had been done
as the allegations surfaced.
Carney said the bank acted to investigate in October as soon as it had evidence
of attempts at fixing the market. But lawmakers pointed to minutes from meetings
at the central bank held eight years earlier
to suggest there had been complaints about
manipulation back then.
SQUIRMED
Paul Fisher, head of markets for the
Bank of England, squirmed as he tried to
explain to the Treasury Select Committee
that the minutes from 2006 were being
misinterpreted more a complaint by
traders about how tough their lives were
than actual accusations that something was
going awry in the markets.
But when committee chair Andrew
Tyrie described the banks oversight systems as opaque, complex and byzantine,
Carney barely put up a fight.
Dealing with a root and branch review
of the matter will test his leadership only
a year into office. And on that point, he
was tough.
We cannot come out of this at the
back end with a shadow of doubt about
the integrity of the Bank of England,
Carney said.
The Bank of Englands investigation
has so far examined 15,000 emails, 21,000
Bloomberg and Reuters chat room records
and 40 hours of telephone recordings. No
action has been taken so far.

An Earthquake Is On Its Way

NEXT MONTH there will be an earthquake.
Here in Britain. Honest! A political earthquake.
It will be caused (partly) by putting up a window poster and displaying a garden board.
It will be a genteel earthquake promulgated
by the UK Independence Party.
At all events, this is what has been predicted by UKIPs leader, Nigel Farage (rhymes
with garage), as what will happen during the
European elections which will coincide with
the local elections on May 22.
Currently UKIP are the second largest
Member of the European Parliament (MEP)
group with 23 seats. The Conservatives
have 26, Labour 13, the LibDems 11 and
assortment of Nationalists, independents and
Greens account for the remaining ten MEPs,
making 73 in all.
Farage is set on making UKIP Britains
largest European party. If they achieve this, it
will indeed cause tremors to shake the political system. David Cameron has a generally
eurosceptic party sitting behind him on the
government benches, a figure reliably put at
over 100 Tory MPs. They are terrified that if
UKIP form a majority in the May elections,
their own seats will disappear beneath them
when the General Election comes round
next year...
SIMILARITIES
Let us pause for a moment to consider
the other vote on European membership
since there are some striking similarities.
The referendum was held by Harold Wilson
also heading a minority (Labour) government
in June 1975. Wilson pledged to renegotiate
Britains position in what was then known
as the Common Market and put the details
to the electorate. Like Cameron today, he
heads a fractious party and was desperately
anxious to avoid a party split. Wilson claimed
a successful renegotiation and asked for
national approval.
In a 65 percent turn-out the country came
down heavily on staying in, with over twothirds in favour. Relief all round.
Back to 2014, it is the UKIP factor that has
complicated the situation. However lunatic
they may appear one of their prominent
members recently attributed the flooding on
the Somerset Levels to the legalisation of gay
marriage. I am not joking: David Sylvester, a
UKIP councillor in Henley-on-Thames, was
adamant that same-sex weddings and David
Cameron were to blame. It took a month for
UKIP to kick him out of their party.
Ours is not an especially sophisticated
electorate but one which bears grudges.
In the past fifty years we have seen some

startling swings
achieved by protest
votes alone. They
started with Liberal
gains in Torrington
(1958) and Orpington (1962), which
established the Liberals as the None of
the Above Party.
However, a result in a Nottingham
council by-election last month showed how
far their popularity has plunged. They came
bottom of the poll with 56 votes, eleven votes
behind Bus-pass Elvis, in whose election
manifesto was a pledge to legalise brothels
and give OAPs a 30 percent discount into
the bargain.
Since they have been in coalition with the
Conservative, the LibDems are now One of
the Above and it is UKIP along with Bus-pass
Elvis who have inherited the protest vote.
They claim to be the Britain Out Party but one
suspects that not far beneath the surface is
lurking a pretty disreputable racist element.
UKIP denies this vigorously but their case is
hardly helped by their latest slogan, Love
Britain Vote UKIP.
It might not seem much but up to the last
couple of years the form of words was also
Love Britain Vote BNP, the British Nationalist
Party the successor to Oswald Moseleys
Blackshirts.
RACIST
This racist element seemed present in
Nigel Farages description of a train journey in
a speech in March to UKIPs Torquay conference: It was rush hour, from Charing Cross,
it was the stopper going out. We stopped at
London Bridge, New Cross, Hither Green. It
wasnt until after we got past Grove Park that
I could actually hear English being audibly
spoken in the carriage. Does that make me
feel slightly awkward? Yes. I wonder whats
really going on. And Im sure thats a view
that will be reflected by three quarters of the
population, perhaps even more.
What Farage has done is to lump together
immigration and the European Community
you will notice that it wasnt the colour of
his fellow-passengers skins he felt awkward
about but the fact that they did not speak English. They were not from the commonwealth
but from the Common Market. And you can
see where the reasoning takes us: obviously if
we want to avoid mass immigration we need
to get out of Europe.
The Coalition Government is at logger-

heads over this matter. David Cameron has

promised an in/out referendum on Europe in
2017 in an attempt to outflank UKIP while
the LibDems have nailed their colours firmly
to the mast: they are the Party of In and welcome the benefits of immigration, revealed
in a government report last month to have
had little adverse effect on the UK. Thus Nick
Clegg and Nigel Farage will be taking part in
radio and TV debates this month around the
topic of Europe.
SCARED
The Labour Party does not emerge from
this controversy with much distinction. They
too are scared of UKIP since the protest vote
has hit Labour too. They are loudly mumbling
into their beards desperately trying to avoid
saying they are in favour of staying in Europe
and not frightened of immigration in case anyone hears them. Ed Miliband has announced
that if he wins the next election, Labour will
only give an in/out referendum if more powers
are transferred to Europe.
The truth of the matter is that we would be
mad to leave the European Community, just

as we would be crazy if we did not manage

to stop Scotland from leaving the UK. Our
politicians appear nightly on TV to warn the
Russians to behave themselves and stop molesting Ukraine or well do or say something.
As if the Russians are remotely bothered what
we think, say or do but crucially it makes our
politicians seem important and that is vital.
Thus we are obliged to take seriously a
man who smokes electronic fags, intends
to ban wind farms, stop development of a
high-speed train link from London to the north
and will get us out of Europe so that he can
sit in a railway compartment and hear English
spoken in Hither Green.

IMMIGRATION
By Stephen Ure

Affidavit Of Support
GETTING MARRIED is an exciting time in
anyones life. But for those entering an
international marriage, where one spouse
is a US citizen (or legal permanent resident
LPR aka green card holder) and the other,
a foreign national, there are some practical
immigration matters to consider beforehand.
One of these considerations is the Affidavit
of Support that must be submitted by the US
citizen or LPR spouse at the time they sponsor their foreign spouse for legal permanent
residence (aka green card).
The Affidavit of Support (form I-864) is
a legally enforceable document the spouse
signs to accept financial responsibility for
the foreign spouse who is coming to the
United States to live permanently. A qualified
sponsor must make 125 percent above the
poverty line based on household size or have
sufficient assets. The person who signs the
affidavit of support becomes the financial
sponsor of the spouse coming to live in
the United States. By signing the Affidavit,
the sponsor promises to provide support to
maintain the foreign spouse at an income of
no less than 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for the immigrants household
size. In 2014, 125 percent of the federal
poverty guideline for a household of two living in the 48 contiguous states is $19,662.
This figure varies if the spouse lives in Alaska
or Hawaii or if the sponsor is on active duty
in the US military. This requirement that a
sponsor promise to maintain the immigrant
above the poverty level is intended not only
to protect the immigrant from poverty, but
to protect the government from a public
burden. If the US citizen spouses income
doesnt meet the poverty guidelines for the
household size or the person doesnt have
sufficient assets, a friend or relative can be
a joint sponsor. A sponsor must be at least
18-years-old and a US citizen or a lawful
permanent resident and be a resident of the
United States.
What sponsors have to remember is that
the obligations to support the immigrant
can last for many years, even if the couple
divorces. The I-864 form specifically states
that divorce does not terminate the obliga-

tion. Courts have even held that a prenuptial

agreement specifically limiting spousal
support does not terminate the obligation.
The reasoning behind this is that the Affidavit
is a contract between the sponsor and the
United States Government so that sponsor
cant unilaterally absolve him/herself of the
contractual obligation with the Government
by making a separate agreement with a third
party (the foreign spouse) in the premarital
agreement.
The sponsors obligation ends only when
the sponsored immigrant (1) becomes a US
citizen, (2) works 40 quarters as defined by
the Social Security Act (usually 10 years),
(3) no longer has lawful permanent resident
status and permanently leaves the United
States, (4) receives a new grant of adjustment of status based on a new Affidavit of
Support, or (5) dies. During the duration of
the obligation, the sponsor must notify the
United States Citizenship and Immigration
Services of any address change within 30
days or risk getting fined.
By signing the Affidavit, it creates a
contract between the sponsor and the US
Government which can be enforced by the
sponsored immigrant. This means that the
sponsoring spouse can be required to support the spouse for up to ten years even if
they divorce and even if the foreign spouse
makes no attempts to get a job. If the immigrant spouse received any means-tested
public benefits, the sponsoring spouse is
also obligated to repay the agency that
provided them. At the same time, in order
to get the support, the immigrant spouse
must generally file a complaint in federal
court to have the Affidavit enforced; it is not
automatic. Some factors such as support
from other sources may be considered in
determining whether an immigrant spouse
is being supported at 125 percent of the
poverty line

UNDER LONDONS streets in Winston
Churchills World War II bunker, young
techies were fighting a new kind of war.
Bent over their computers in a steelreinforced room, dozens of amateur cyber
security experts spent a day racing to understand why Britains banking network
suddenly seemed to have gone offline.
The exercise it was just an exercise
came complete with sirens and mock
newscasts. Its meant to recruit the next
generation of tech talent, and is also meant
to help highlight the threat many here see
as inevitable: A major cyberattack on the
nations critical infrastructure.
Rob Partridge, a manager with telecommunications company BT who helped
spearhead the competition, said: Some of
this is a little bit tongue-in-cheek. Still,
its the kind of stuff that might happen.
COMPLEX
In a private area in the back of the
Churchill War Rooms, a complex of underground offices originally built to protect top
officials from Nazi bombs, 42 contestants
were clustered around seven tables amid the
crimson glow of red diodes. Staff from BT,
British signals intelligence agency GCHQ
and other companies paced the floor as the
youngsters parsed code and tracked packets
of data across an imaginary network.
The exercise, formally known as the
Cyber Security Challenge, is one of a series
of Internet security initiatives that have
recently won increased funding as the UK
government has begun disbursing 860m
into the field. The money has fed academic
scholarships, business partnerships and a
new research institution devoted to protecting British infrastructure from hackers.
But last months war game, which imagines Britains financial infrastructure paralyzed by malicious software, left some cold.
Its hype, said Ross Anderson, a University of Cambridge academic who argues
that online threats have been overstated.
In an email, he paraphrased American
journalist H L Mencken, who warned that
politicians love to keep people alarmed
with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of
them imaginary.

Beer, Bingo And Conservative Party Budget

Message Causes Flurry Of Parodies On Twitter
PATRONISING, condescending; just two of the words that
have described the Conservative chairmans celebratory
advert/poster following the
Chancellors budget last month.
The tax cuts on bingo and
duty on beer were the thrust of
poster which bore the main line:
help hardworking people do
more of the things they enjoy.
But, not only angering thousands, it drew many parody
versions on Twitter, harpooning
the Tory party for thoughtlessness. Grant Shapps defended
himself by accusing the Labour
of deliberately playing the

class card after the backlash

over his bingo and beer advert
hailing Budget tax changes.
Shapps tweeted the poster
with the headline Bingo!,
followed by the message that
upset people.
One joke version was a photoshopped version of a Cabinet
meeting with members apparently enjoying beer and bingo
was soon spreading like wildfire
on Facebook. The hashtag,
Torybingo, was trending on
Twitter and was soon the only
budget-related hashtag on the
site.
One of the parodies repro-

duced Shapps poster but with

the message changed to: I say,
you there! How is your whippet? Jolly Good, Jolly Good.
Carry on.
TV show The Thick Of It
scriptwriter Simon Blackwell
tweeted: Genuinely, if that
Conservative beer and bingo
ad had come up at a Thick Of It
script meeting wed have rejected it as being too far-fetched.
A Tory source told The Spectator: Were not going to
apologise for cutting bingo tax
and beer duty. Its a desperate
attempt by Labour to deflect
attention.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

If You Worked For The
UK Government, Can
They Tax You?
A QUERY thats come up recently is the
question of tax on pensions paid from the
UK. In particular, government pensions.
I dont mean here state pensions (social
security as it is here, the old age pension
as it used to be known, but certainly isnt
as I get nearer to claiming it myself!).
Government pensions are those received
from government service, which could
be the civil service (national or local), the
armed forces, the police, the NHS or an
education authority.
Part of the US/UK Tax Treaty specially
deals with income from government service. So far as pensions are concerned, it is
very unusual in allowing for these pensions
to be taxed in the United Kingdom if that is
where they are being paid from. Its even
more unusual because the wording is that
they are only taxed in the UK.
You dont need to be an avid reader of
this column to know how strange it is for
the US government to give up tax on income
received from anywhere! And in fact they
havent, because the next part of the article
goes on to say that if the pensioner is both
resident in, and a citizen of, the US, then
the pension is only taxed there.
So there are three alternatives, depending on your US immigration status, but
assuming in all cases that you are living
here in the US.
Firstly, if you have become a US citizen,
any pension received from the UK, even in
respect of government service, is taxable
only in the US.
Secondly, if you are a US permanent

resident (green card holder), you can be

taxed in the UK on any government service
pension. Oh, and you can also be taxed
in the US on the same amount, but you
can claim foreign tax credit for any UK tax
deducted. Clearly, in this case you would
want to let HMRC know right away if you
become a US citizen!
Thirdly, if you dont have a green card,
but have a nonimmigrant visa, the only
tax you will be paying is to HMRC. But,
because you are claiming a treaty benefit,
you still need to tell the IRS about the pension on form 8833 with your US tax return.
If this seems unduly complicated to you,
it does to me too! Clearly the UK government feels it should have first chance at a
tax charge, and since the money is being
paid from the UK it obviously does have!
But they accepted this wouldnt work for
people who had become US citizens, so we
have a complete mess of a compromise.
Goodness knows how they expect anyone
to work their way around this lot!
The moral of the story is that just
because the UK deduct tax from your
pension, it doesnt mean they should be!
For a taxing authority this is a reasonable
starting-point. But the IRS only have to allow you credit for tax you cant claim back,
so its important to know the right answer
for your own situation!

Mary-Heather Styles runs Transatlantic

about as different from the UK as it could
be! Apart from the pending April 15 deadline,
which is making her life challenging, her
immediate concern is to find the Mothers

to send to her mother this March! Or there
may be trouble!

Man Wins 16-Year Legal Battle Over Laptop

IT STARTED with an unwanted laptop,
and it ended in Britains Supreme Court.
A Scottish man has won a 16-year
court battle sparked by a wrangle over a
computer credit deal.
Richard Durkin bought a laptop in
1998, using a credit agreement with lender
HFC Bank for about 1,500. He returned
the computer the next day because it
lacked an internal modem, and tried to

cancel the credit deal.

The bank said he couldnt, and after
he refused pay declared he had defaulted.
Durkin said the bad credit rating meant he
was unable to buy a house.
Durkin went to court, spawning a battle
that ended last month when five Supreme
Court justices ruled that Durkin had validly rescinded the credit agreement and
awarded him 8,000.

We should be represented by a flag that

adding it would not signify an end to the
South Pacific nations constitutional ties
to the British monarchy or participation
in the Commonwealth group of countries.
Don McIver, president of the Returned

INDIFFERENT
The Republican Movement of New Zealand, which advocates an end to recognizing the British monarch as New Zealands
head of state, remains indifferent.
We realize there is momentum to
change the flag, and we are not against
it, said the movements chairman, who
goes by the single name Savage. But the
substance is changing the head of state. Its
symbolic only to change the flag.
Yet for many, a new flag would represent another small step by New Zealand
toward disentangling itself from its British
past. In 2004, for instance, the country
established a Supreme Court to replace
Britains Privy Council as the final court
of appeal.
Recent opinion polls have yielded
conflicting indications about whether a
majority favor a change.

it seems to have been all for naught anyway,

Report: Royal & Ancient Golf Club Asks

Members To Allow Women To Join
THE ROYAL & Ancient looks set to
allow women to join one of the worlds
most influential golf clubs.
The Daily Mail newspaper cited
a letter from the R&A to its 2,500
members recommending they change
the all-male membership policy at St
Andrews, Scotland, the home of golf.
Now is the time to ask members
of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club
to welcome female members into the
club, Wilson Sibbet, chairman of the
clubs general committee, was quoted
as writing to members.
It is of course for members to
decide if they wish to alter the rules
of the club to give effect to this change
of policy, Sibbet added.

A vote expected to be held in the

autumn.
Pressure has been building on the
R&A from politicians and sponsors
to allow female members. The R&A
of St. Andrews was founded in 1754.
Only last year the R&A said it had
no plans to pressure all-male clubs to
change their membership policies.
There is nothing wrong under
UK legislation with a single-sex club
as long as they behave under the
equality act as far as guest access is
concerned, R&A chief executive
Peter Dawson said last year.
Augusta National, for the first time
in its 80-year history, invited two
women to join the club in 2012.

PATAKS WALKERS HOB NOBS BRANSTON

By Nick Perry
NEW ZEALANDERS will soon get to
vote on whether to change their national
flag, which many view as a relic from a
colonial past.
Prime Minister John Key last month
announced plans to hold a referendum
within three years. His political opponents
said they would follow through with those
plans even if they oust Key in this years
national elections.
The current flag depicts the Southern
Cross star constellation and includes
Britains Union Jack in the top left corner. Many complain it is too similar to
Australias flag and doesnt reflect New
Zealands independence from former
colonizer Britain.
But many who have served in the military oppose a change. And among those
advocating a change, theres plenty of
debate about a replacement.
Key said he favors a silver fern set
against a black background, an image
thats popular among sports teams. Some
say that would equate the country too much
with its sporting heroes and would be too
reminiscent of a pirate ensign. Some argue
the countrys indigenous Maori should be
represented in any new flag.
SPEECH
In a speech, Key said the flag represents
a past era.
The flag remains dominated by the
Union Jack in a way that we ourselves
are no longer dominated by the United
Kingdom, he said.

not before he gives Rita the final insult. Just

IN BUSINESS or any organization it is invariably those very capable people mostly behind
the scenes that get things done. That surely
must be the case with Andrew Lewis OBE
(no relation, although I would be proud). Hes
head of Trade and Industry at the British Consulate. Andrew is a key player in negotiating
and overseeing the smooth transition of trade
and commerce between our two nations,
being there 12 years and starting with only a
staff of six which has grown to 16..
With those kind of skills you become very
much in demand, particularly from the private
sector as the Consul General Chris OConnor
pointed out recently at an event he held at
the residency in his honor to thank Andrew
Lewis for services rendered, especially for
his right hand support when Chris first arrived in August.
Andrew stated that with his wife Megan,
a US Navy surgeon, and seven-month-old
baby, he must pursue more lucrative endeavors. While he was very quick to state how
much he had enjoyed holding his position
and how grateful he was to his staff and
colleagues, he had to think of his family and
their financial future.
Judging by the high flying guests that were
in attendance, everyone from bank officials,
Paramount, Warner Bros, Disney Studios
as well as the former CG and co-founder of
BritWeek Bob Peirce, with wife Sharon Harroun Pierce who had just returned from Miami
for an extraordinary week of events kicking
off the second season of BritWeek in Florida,
wed say Andrew is well respected.

On a personal note from Karen and myself:

over the years that we have been working
with Andrew, the CG and staff, whether it be
here in LA, Washington DC or the High Commissioners in Canada. We have always had
tremendous cooperation and a willingness to
share information that may benefit the Brits
on this continent. Here in the colonies youll
never meet such nice people and ones to be
proud of who serve you so well!! Good luck
Andrew and Megan. The British public is very
much indebted to you. We know youll still
participate with the British Community so its
far from goodbye.
BRITWEEK
BritWeek is just around the corner starting April 21 until May 4. Now thats exciting!
Nine years ago Nigel Lythgoe (American Idol)
approached then Consul General Bob Peirce
and wife Sharon with an idea. Between them
they came up with the concept of BritWeek, a
way of showing LA all things British: artistic,
creative, film, theatre, music, and business
contributions. Eight successful years later
and 125,000 signed on participants just this
year alone www.BritWeek.org
This year we have something new. Why
not celebrate Spring April 26-27 with a
weekend out in Ventura County at the Channel
Islands Maritime Museum asked Executive
Director Julia Chambers. Julia and museum
docent Catherine Cat Wiggins, who suggested putting on BritWeek in Ventura. Well,
think about it. 60 percent of our magnificent
model ships are British; 45 percent of our
paintings are by British artists; we even have
an entire section devoted to Lord Nelson. We
have just moved into this gorgeous two story
wood paneled building with a panoramic
view of the harbor with a large visitors dock.
Maybe we could invite a tall ship to visit.
We even have Brit Tom who is chairman
of the docents, who often sports an ascot.
We have the space, a grass park with picnic
benches, plus plenty of free parking, a beach
on one side, the harbor on the other, and two
convenient hotels.
Now youve really got our attention. Its
a brilliant idea we thought, what better than

F1 Design And Rule

Changes Welcome
New Season

AT THE TIME of my writing the first F1 race on

this seasons calendar has yet to run and so
I have no idea as to the result. Unlike the last
three or four seasons, the outcome this term
is very uncertain due to the biggest set of rule
changes having been introduced in the sport
for a generation. The advent of high-tech turbo
hybrid engines has brought about restrictions
by a fuel limit as well as significant changes
to the cars.
No longer will the cars be powered by 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8s, as the power-plant
requirements have changed. All the cars for the
foreseeable future will be powered by 1.6-litre
V6 turbo engines coupled with a fuel restriction
of 100kg per hour. Aside from these engine
changes a new Electronic Recovery System
coupled with the current Kinetic Energy System has been introduced to all of the cars. This
is an electric motor connected to the turbo that
will harness the energy that would otherwise
be wasted as heat. The amount of energy that
can be generated in this way is unlimited and
can be either stored in the battery or used to
accelerate. This electric motor also increases
the efficiency of the turbo and can be used to
ensure it works the instant the driver applies
the throttle.
In the past, turbo engines have always had
a slight throttle lag a delay in power as the
turbo gets up to speed. This has been removed
in these new engines. As for the Kers system,
last year, it was allowed to produce 60kw for
up to 6.7 seconds a lap. This year, however, it
can produce 150kw for 30 seconds. There is
a price to pay for these performance enhancements though, as reliability will be a major
concern, especially at the start of the season.
The overall height limits of this seasons cars
has been reduced also, primarily for safety
reasons. It will reduce the danger in incidents

Page 9

of T-boning when the nose of one car hits

the side of another by making it less likely
that the high nose of a car can hit a driver.
This will prevent a car from being launched
into the air when it hits the rear wheels of the
one in front. These changes present further
challenges for the designers as the teams want
the chassis as high as possible for the best
under-car aerodynamics and front-suspension
geometry.
There are other changes, too, all of which
will have a significant impact on aerodynamics. The front wings have been narrowed by
150mm, meaning that it will be more difficult
for teams to turn airflow around the outside of
the front tyres, which will affect the entire cars
aerodynamic down force. The most significant
effect of these complex aerodynamic changes
though is that, overall the cars have become
ugly looking. The number one design specification of a Formula one car is performance
and yet every F1 team also want their cars to
look good as no one wants to win a race in an
ugly-looking car. It is the same for all teams
though, with the narrowing and lowering of
the front wings it has been said that the cars
resemble anteaters.
There have been a few rule changes also,
the most controversial being the decision to
award double points in the final race of the season in an attempt to prevent championships
being decided early. This proposal, dreamt
up by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, follows
the recent dominance of Red Bulls Sebastian
Vettel, who has won the last four drivers titles.
The German claimed two of those last three
championships with at least three races to go.
I personally think this is a stupid rule change. It
is like the playoff matches in Football to decide
which team gets promoted. The seasons
winners should be decided over the complete

season, not some pot luck affair at the end.

Bernie Ecclestone has come up with a
lot of senseless ideas over the years for
Formula One, many of which thankfully never
materialized. One of his ideas though, that
was deemed as senseless a couple of years
ago, I could have agreed with. Overtaking in
Formula One is extremely difficult as there is
not a great deal of difference in the speed of
most of the cars. The tracks are very wide at
most of the venues and yet the racing line (the
most efficient part of the track) is very narrow,
usually the width of a single car, thus making
overtaking almost impossible. More often than
not the car in pole position that gets around the
first corner in the lead will take the chequered
flag 200 miles later. Ecclestones idea was to
have two separate lanes, side by side and yet

divided at a portion or two of the track so that

the drivers could decide which one to take.
Logistically it would have been a nightmare
of course to implement this at all of the race
tracks, not to mention the expense it would
take. But when one considers this, no longer
would a faster car with an equally fast driver
have to remain behind the car in front for the
entire race just because of the impossibility of
being able to overtake. I thought it was Ecclestones finest ideas, but, it probably will never
be implemented. The chances of constructing
one lane route exactly equal to the other would
have been a formidable task, so perhaps there
will always be only one racing line.
Anyway, as it is now, with the new design
changes and rule implements coupled with all
of the teams reliability concerns this season
F1 winner is up for grabs. Mercedes has so
far had the least problems, and are favourites
for the initial race events. Lewis Hamilton is
their top driver there and may go on to win this
season. Lewis is a favourite of mine, so Im
hoping he does well, Im also wary of Vettel
in the Red Bull team, they are having reliability
issues right now but I am sure they eventually
should resolve them. I personally think Hamilton is a better driver than Vettel but then I think
the best driver on the current F1 schedule is
Ferraris driver Fernando Alonso. Im sticking
with Lewis Hamilton all the way though so
good luck to him, its time for another Great
British champion.

High Court Battle Over Richard IIIs Remains

DISTANT relatives of Englands King

Richard III are launching their High Court
battle over where to rebury the 15th-century
monarchs remains.
The remains of Richard who was killed
in battle in 1485 were found in a Leicester
parking lot.
The government has given Leicester
Cathedral in central England permission to
rebury the king, but his relatives want him

buried in the northern England city of York.

The relatives under the name the Plantagenet Alliance are bringing legal action
that began last month at the High Court
against the government and the University
of Leicester.
They claim that the government did not
consult widely enough or consider the
wishes of Richard or his descendant on
where the monarch should be reburied.

Online Food Service Just Eat To Float Shares In London

JUST EAT, an online food ordering service, has announced plans to float its shares
on the London Stock Exchange.
The company, which lets customers
order takeout food from local restaurants,
plans to raise 100m in an initial public
offering to expand its service.
The firm, founded in 2001 in Denmark,

operates in 13 countries including Britain,

France, Canada, Ireland and Spain. It has
been based in London since 2006.
Just Eat generated revenue of 96.8m in
2013, up 62 percent compared with 2012.
The company estimates that the global
food delivery market is worth 58bn globally, with online activity growing quickly.

Two Charged
Under Female
Genital
Mutilation Act
BRITISH prosecutors have announced
their first prosecutions under a law barring female genital mutilation.
Prosecutors alleged last month that
Dr Dhanoun Dharmasena, a doctor at
north Londons Whittington Hospital,
repaired such a procedure on a woman
who had given birth. Another man,
Hasan Mohamed, faces one charge of
intentionally encouraging an offense of
female genital mutilation.
They are both scheduled to appear in
court this month.
Female genital mutilation intentionally altering or injuring female genital
organs for non-medical reasons has
been a crime in England and Wales since
1985. The World Health Organization
estimates that 125 million girls have
been affected in the 29 countries in
Africa and the Middle East where the
practice is concentrated.

2018 Mission: Mars

Rover Prototype
Unveiled In UK

IT LOOKS like a giant sandbox except the sand has a reddish tint and the
toys on display are very expensive
prototypes designed to withstand the
rigors of landing on Mars.
The European Mars rover unveiled
March 27 at a testing ground in Britain
is designed to drill beneath the surface
of Mars searching for signs of life.
The plan is to develop an autonomous robotic vehicle that can be
launched in 2018 as part of the European Space Agencys ExoMars program.
Plans call for it to be in communication with controllers on Earth twice a
day and to be able to use the transmitted
information to navigate to new destinations on Mars.
But it wont be fast maximum
range is about 70 meters per day.

Coffee in England always tastes like a

chemistry experiment
Agatha Christie

PERSONALLY, I HAVE always enjoyed

coffee in England, but not so much with
American coffee....weird I know. When I
get a trip in to the UK I usually come back
with several bags of Marks and Spencers,
Kenko or Douwe Egbert coffee in my luggage. The early instant coffee most Brits
had is Camp Coffee, that thick gooey brown
liquid in a squared bottle. It is still available
which surprises me, because I never liked
coffee made with that but found it very
good to use when wanting a coffee flavour
for a dessert. It actually is a mix of coffee
and chicory essence. Camp coffee itself
has its roots from Scotland, where it has
been made since the 1800s, said to have
originated when the Highlanders needed a
quick brew in the field. I remember my Mum
making coffee and walnut cakes, and used
Camp coffee for the flavouring.
For a nation of tea drinkers, decent coffee was not always to be had. However it
is the same all over now, with the coffee
shops, influenced by the Starbucks or Costa
brands to have a myriad of versions, lattes,
cappuccinos, frappucinos, decaff, with soy,
half this and that etc. During my last visits
I wanted coffee after a meal with the treat
of real cream in it, swirling in the cup
however not to be found at all now. Also
we used to do the Cafe au Lait thing, strong
coffee from one jug poured at the same time
with another jug of hot milk, always looked

Coffee and Brandy Trifle

3/4 cup brewed strong coffee

1/4 cup brown sugar
4 Tbsp brandy
1 cinnamon stick
About 8 oz pound or yellow cake
1-2 cups fresh raspberries
About 1 cups made English custard
(worth finding the Birds custard mix)
8 oz carton heavy whipping cream
3 Tbsp Baileys
1 tsp demerara or raw sugar
very dramatic! The closest I can get to that
now is a Latte.
Then there were the Coffee Mornings
(shades of Hyacinth Bucket.?!)...a social
affair, often for a charity, served with jugs
of cream and demerara sugar, and accompanied with biscuits....Digestive, Tea time
assortment, lemon puffs, shortbread etc.

Bowie-Singing Canadian Astronaut Now A

Big Hit Ambassador In Ireland
MANY OF US will remember the astronaut
who took it on himself to sing and record the
Dave Bowie hit Space Oddity while working
on the International Space Station. Well,
who would have thought, that Canadian
astronaut Chris Hadfields next step in life
would have been an Ambassador To Ireland.
Hadfield has already shot four short films
entitled An Astronauts Guide To The Island
Of Ireland stealing from his books title
of, An Astronauts Guide To Life On Earth.
In one clip, Commander Hadfield learns

some Gaelic words with primary school

children, while in another he gets kitted up
and tries out hurling.
The 54-year-old, now retired as an astronaut, also makes the popular tourist trip to the
Guinness brewery in Dublin. His popularity
in Ireland skyrocketed after he tweeted several pictures of the country from space, along
with messages in Gaelic.
Plus Commander Hadfields daughter just
happens to be a student at Dublins Trinity
College.

a special dessert, adapted on a recipe I had

from an old BBC Good Food magazine, or
Sainsburys, cant remember so cant give
full credit for it, but I recently made it for very

really enjoyed it, think Ill make it again for
my birthday!! Hope you enjoy my version
Pour the coffee and sugar in a heavy
based saucepan. Bring slowly to a boil stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar, add
the brandy and cinnamon stick and simmer
until it has reduced about half. Remove the
cinnamon stick and set syrup aside to cool
Cut the cake into chunks and lay them in
the bottom of a trifle dish, pour the cooled
syrup over and leave to soak. Scatter half
of the raspberries over the cake, and then
spread the custard over the top, to make
another layer. Whip the cream and Baileys
to soft peaks and spoon over the custard,
and leave to chill. To serve scatter the
remaining raspberries over the top and
sprinkle with the demerara sugar. Yield
about 6-8 servings

English Runner Is Three-Time

Pancake Race Winner In US

AN ENGLISH runner won the 65th annual

Shrove Tuesday pancake race, which pits
two towns in the US and England against
each other.
Devon Byrne, 20, of Olney, England,
covered the 415-yard course in 55.61 seconds to defeat Summer Parsons, who won
the US leg of the race in Liberal, Kansas. It
was Byrnes third win in a row, The Leader
and Times in Kansas reported.
Olney and Liberal women in aprons
and head scarves run the course with a

pancake in their pan. Race rules require

the contestants to flip their pancake at the
beginning and end of the race.
According to legend, the Olney race
started in 1445 when a harried housewife
arrived at church on Shrove Tuesday still
clutching her frying pan with a pancake
in it.
Liberal challenged Olney in 1950 after
seeing photos of the race in a magazine.
Liberal leads the competition with 36
wins to Olneys 28.

Bank Of England Holds Rates Low To Help Recovery

THE BANK of England has decided to

keep its key interest rate at a record low
in hopes of strengthening the economic
recovery.
Policymakers decided last month to
leave the benchmark interest rate at 0.5
percent. The decision had been widely
expected, as members of the Monetary
Policy Committee have been appearing in
local media to indicate that interest rates
would not rise soon.

Mark Carney, the Bank of Englands

governor, has said so as well, even though
he has moved past the policy of forward
guidance, which had promised to keep
rates low until unemployment dropped
significantly.
After the jobless rate fell faster than
expected, Carney broadened the forward
guidance policy to include other economic indicators like wage growth and
productivity.

A CONVICTED Mafia boss has won his

extradition case in Britain.
Judge Howard Riddle ruled last month
that Domenico Rancadore will not be sent
back to Italy. He is wanted in Italy to serve
a seven-year sentence for participation in
Mafia association in Sicily between 1987
and 1995. He has been a fugitive since
1994 and was convicted in his absence.
Italian officials say Rancadore at one
time was chief of the Sicilian Mafia. He
was arrested in Britain in August on a
European warrant.

OBITUARIES

Former Dynasty Jerry Roberts Bletchley

Star Kate OMara
Park Code-Breaker
KATE OMARA,
74, British actress
best known for her
role in the 1980s TV
series Dynasty, died
last month at the age
of 74.
Phil Belfield, her
agent, said OMara died in a nursing home
in southern England after a short illness.
The actress, who began her television
career in the 1960s, became a household
name for playing Cassandra Caress Morrell, sister to Joan Collins Alexis Colby,
in Dynasty.
In Britain she is often remembered for
her role in Triangle a soap opera set
aboard a North Sea ferry that is often cited
as the worst piece of British television.
She also appeared in the original run of
British series Doctor Who and BBC drama
Howards Way. In the 1990s she starred
in the comedy show Absolutely Fabulous
with Joanna Lumley.
More recently she appeared in a 2012
stage adaptation of Agatha Christies
Death on the Nile.
She is survived by her sister, actress
Belinda Carroll.

Clarissa Dickson
Of Two Fat Ladies
CLARISSA DICKSON WRIGHT, 66,
the television chef
who achieved fame
as one half of Two
Fat Ladies, has died
at the age of 66, her
agent said.
She died on March 15 in Edinburghs
Royal Infirmary after being ill for several
months. Her agent said Dickson Wright
hadnt been well for a little while and
had been in hospital since the beginning
of the year.
A former barrister, she became one of
Britains most famous chefs by teaming up
with Jennifer Paterson for a hugely popular
series of cookery shows that launched on
television screens in 1996.

RAYMOND JERRY ROBERTS,

93, one of the last of
a top World War II
code-breaking team
at Bletchley Park, has
died, following a short
illness.
Captain Roberts, from Liphook in Hampshire, was part of a group that cracked the
German High Commands Tunny code at
the British listening post.
Their decrypts made it possible to read
Hitlers own messages during the war.
The team is credited with helping to
shorten the war by at least two years.
Capt Roberts joined Bletchley Park, in
Buckinghamshire, as a German linguist
and was among four founder members of
the Testery section named after its head
Ralph Tester.
Their target was to crack a system known
as Tunny, which carried the messages of
Hitlers top generals and even the Fuhrer
himself.
The system used four times as many
encryption wheels as the famous Enigma
machine which carried military communications.
Bletchley Park, where the Tunny code
was deciphered
Reminiscing years after WW2- when
he could finally talk about his work Capt
Roberts said he had taken delight in reading Hitlers messages, sometimes even
before the intended recipient.
Capt Roberts campaigned for further
recognition of his colleagues including
Enigma codebreaker Alan Turing.
Capt Roberts later received an MBE
and became a tireless ambassador for the
memory of those who had served in secret.
He spent years campaigning for greater
acknowledgement of his colleagues, including Alan Turing, who broke the naval
Enigma code.
And he argued the Testery group as a
whole should he honoured for its work
including Bill Tutte, who broke the
Tunny system, and Tommy Flowers, who
designed and built the Colossus which
sped up some stages of the breaking of
Tunny traffic.

Sycamore Row
By John Grisham
IN THIS latest book by John Grisham we
return to Clanton, Mississippi and attorney
Jake Brigance.
Seth Hubbard a wealthy old man dying
of cancer trusts no one and hangs himself
from a sycamore tree. Before he dies he
leaves a new, handwritten will that will cause
immense conflict between his adult children
and his black maid and Jake. This is just
as compelling as A Time To Kill.
Jake receives the handwritten will in the
mail immediately after Seth Hubbard hangs
himself. Jake had never met the man but he
is asked to handle the task of defending the
handwritten will. The first place Jake goes
is to the courthouse to record the will. Then
he goes to see Ozzie Walls, the black sheriff
who he knows is fair and will uphold the law
no matter what. Although Jake doesnt want
to handle the case he needs the money. His
house was burned down after the last trial
and they are living in a rented house and
struggling. The
amount of Seths
estate amounts
to over $24m.
Seth has two children Herschel
and Ramona who
have children of
their own, two exwives, a brother
who disappeared
years ago and his
housekeeper, Lettie Lang. In the will he specifically states that
his ex-wives get nothing, his children and
grandchildren are also completely excluded.
He leaves five percent to his brother Ancil,
five percent to the Irish Road Christian
Church which he never attended and the
remaining 90 percent to Lettie.
The battle begins the brother and sister
(and her useless husband) dont speak but
decide to come together when they hear
their father has died. They think they are now
wealthy how wrong are they! They rarely,
if ever, spoke to their father and Lettie cant
remember them visiting him yet, now, they
want everyone to believe they were a warm,
loving family. The whole town of Clanton is
buzzing with speculation and gossiping about
why Seth would cut out his family and leave
the estate to his black maid! Scandalous! Did
the pain medication for the cancer addle his
mind? Was he having an affair with the maid?
Was she using him to get at the money?
As Jake gets into the investigation there
are more questions than answers. And why
did he hang himself in that particular tree?
Letties family comes out of the woodwork
and her alcoholic and abusive husband
comes back home. The ex-wives show up
and it is a circus at one point the judge gets
fed up with eight lawyers all fighting in his
courtroom and has one of them thrown in jail!
The story is typical Grisham you think its
going one direction and then changes course.
Its extremely compelling and you wont want
to put it down I read it in one day!
Its an amazing ride one of his best for
sure! And the ending is amazing when you
find out what happened all those years ago
and how it all comes full circle. Dont miss it!

NON-CITIZEN HEALTHCARE QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Expat Options For Health Insurance

AS WE SEE, the deadline of the Affordable

Health Care deadline has come and gone.
The monetary penalty for not having health
insurance will now be applied.
Expatriates with Green cards, a variety of
visas and other documents of residence should
consider the protection of a good affordable
health insurance plan due to the high cost of
medical services in the USA.
If you have been researching the variety
of Plans offered by the Government market
place, it must have become obvious that cost
was not a central concern of the Affordable
Care Act. Much confusion has accompanied
the government web site since it was first
launched. President Obama has since stated,
you can keep your current plan if you care
to. Later he added that previously insured
could renew and use your plan if you wished.
As expatriates, this confusion may have
prevented persons clearly qualified as expatriates to consider the insurance policies offered
by the International markets. The products
offered by the established American health
companies offer mandatory high deductible,
higher co-payments, less choice in their PPO
(Preferred Provider Organization), not to
mention you must pay 20 percent of the first
$5,000 of eligible medical cost at a much
higher premium. These new Health Plans are
more about health insurance company profits
rather than health services.
Again, it is important to emphasise, as
expatriates, the International market place is
available to you if you are not an American
citizen who is residing in the USA, and maintain the citizenship of your original country.

Lloyds Underwriters, as well as other

international organizations, continue to offer worldwide international health benefits
that cover medical cost at 100 percent after
satisfying your chosen yearly deductible.
This is a very important comparison to the 80
percent payment in American plans. Lloyds
offers lower premiums for their PPO (www.
multiplan.com) including more available hospitals and doctors in a much larger selection
throughout the entire United States, not just
your resident State.
These plans allow travel worldwide
without having to give notice to your insurance provider or a time restriction. It is also
interesting to note that Lloyds plans are no
longer being administered and serviced from
England as they have been in the past, but
claims are processed here in the USA for
faster claims service.
The insurance buyer needs to understand
that by passing a law that mandates services,
such as prenatal care to pregnancy benefits,
drug/alcohol addiction, and mental disorders,
American companies had to increase their
premiums. The International plans offer
these services, but uses the ala Carte method
because not all policyholders need or want
neither these services nor the extra cost.
The final decision, of course, is the individuals decision. Our research would only point
out that by excluding Expatriate plans offered
to the qualifying expatriate in their search for
health insurance, would be an incomplete
research on the part of a potential applicant.

Fisher Wins, McIlroy & Donaldson

Go Close

Rory McIIroy got off to a great start in the

Honda Classic at the PGA National Resort &
Spa at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, concluding March 2. The Irishman fired off a seven
under par 63 in the first round, and was two
in front by the final round. The competition
got pretty fierce however, and McIIroy found
himself in a four man play-off after they all tied
on an eight under 272. Russell Henley stole
the show however, where a birdie on the first
play-off hole gave the 24-year-old American
his second PGA title. Same weekend, Englands Ross Fisher won the Tishwane Open

in Centurion, South Africa, where

a 20 under par 268, gave him a
three stroke advantage over his
nearest rivals. The 7,964 yard
course is the longest on the
European Tour. It was Fishers
fifth pro-career victory Jamie
Donaldson has won a couple of
European tournaments, but never
a PGA event. He came mighty
close at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at
the Trump National Doral Blue Course in south
Florida, March 9, where he finished one stroke
behind winner Patrick Reed. The Welshman
stayed in contention throughout and shared
the runner-up position with Bubba Watson,
both on a three under 285.
Its a shame it did not quite come off,
said Donaldson.

Andy Murray In Action

Andy Murray reached the semi-finals of

the Mexican Open in Acapulco, before falling
to Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3)
in a very close tussle. The Bulgarian went on
to win the tournament. Earlier the Scot set
aside Pablo Andujar of Spain, Joao Sousa
of Portugal and then Gilles Simon of France.
At the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells,
California, March 3-16, Heather Watson made
it out of the first round with a win over Switzerlands Belinda Bencic, but faced the world
number three, Agnieszka Radwanska in the
second. The Pole won 6-4, 6-3. James Ward
was given a spot after an injury to Juan Martin
Potro, and was drawn against Feliciano Lopez. Ward won the first set, but the Spaniard
came through 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Andy Murray
and Jonny Marray teamed up in the doubles,
beating Gael Monfils and Juan Monaco before
losing to Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares
in the second round. Andy Murray started his
singles campaign with a first round bye, them
a win over the Czechs, Lukas Rosol and Jir
Vesely. But the hard hitting Canadian, Milos
Raonic, overcame Murray 4-6,7-5,6-3, in the
fourth round.
Murray moved into the last sixteen of the
Sony Open in Miami, March 17-30, after
victories over Aussie, Matthew Ebden, and
Spains Feliciano Lopez.

Boxing & Cycling

Former pro-soccer player Curtis Woodhouse (Sheffield Utd, Birmingham City &
Hull) captured the British light-welterweight
crown with a split-decision over champion
Darren Hamilton (14-3) at the Hull Ice Arena,
late February. The 33-year-old new champion

his immediate retirement from the sport,

changed his mind a week later After seven
years without a defeat on his record, Ricky
Burns (36-3-1) lost his WBO lightweight
crown to the unbeaten Nebraskan, Terence
Crawford (23-0) in Glasgow, March 1. Crawford from Omaha, a former Olympic gold medalist piled on the pressure for the Coatbridge
Scot, and took the crown with a unanimous
decision. Down the card, Olympic medalists
Anthony Joshua and Anthony Ogogo kept
their unbeaten records, while lightweight John

team sprint. The team pursuit squad of Joanna
Rowsell, Laura Trott, Katie Archibald and
Elinor Barker took the gold medal after their
time of four minutes, 23.407 seconds was
over a second faster than the silver medalist
Canada. Joanna Rowsell, added a second
gold medal winning the individual pursuit just
twenty four hours later.
I cant believe I went that quick, said
Rowsell, a Welsh athlete from Abergavenny.
Tour de France champion, Chris Froome
won the Tour of Oman for the second
consecutive year, but had to withdraw from
the week long Tirreno Adriatico race in Italy,
through a back injury. Mark Cavendish won
the time trial and the second stage of the Tirreno Adriatico, but then faded, but came back
to win the final stage. Alberto Contador was
the overall winner. Olympic silver medalist
Lizzie Armitstead, won the 132km Ronde van
Drenthe in the Netherlands, with two seconds
to spare over her nearest rival The opening
of the 2014 Formula One year, saw Nico Rosberg win the Australian Grand Prix, March 16.

Track & Horse-Racing

The World Indoor Track Championships

at Sopot, Poland, March 7-9, witnessed Britains Richard Kilty take the gold medal in the
60m. It was a bit of a surprise for everyone
because Kilty, had been brought in to replace
the injured James Dasaolu. Britains Tiffany
Porter grabbed the bronze in the womens
60m. Katarina Johnson-Thompson silvered
in the long jump, while there was bronzes
for the 4x400m womens relay squad and
Andrew Osagie in the 800m Double
Olympic champion Mo Farah, took a tumble
during the New York half-marathon, March 16.
He finished runner-up behind Geoffrey Mutai,
but appeared very groggy at the finish and
complained about how cold it was. He was
taken to hospital for a check- up.
Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee, and
his 2012 world champion brother Jonny,
crossed the finishing line together to win the
Qatar Triathlon. The 1.5km swim, 100km bike
ride and 10km run Qatar event is a precursor to
the eight race, World ITU series which begins
in Auckland, New Zealand, April 5.
The biggest horse race on the National
Hunt calendar, the Cheltenham Gold Cup,
took place March 14, with Lord Windermere
a 20-1 shot, winning in a photo finish over, On
His Own (16-1). Trained by Jim Culloty, rode
by Davy Russell and owned by Dr R Lambe,
the winners purse was over 300,000. Giant Bolster (14-1) was third, three quarter
of length distant. Last years winner Bobs
Worth, was the big red hot favourite at 6-4,
but finished fifth. 13 ran.

International Friendlies

March 5, witnessed a plethora of international exhibition games across the globe with
all the home nations involved. Roy Hodgson
made six substitutions in an attempt to put
some fire in to Englands attack at Wembley,
against Denmark, but stubborn Danish resistance prevailed most of the time. A netting by
Daniel Sturridge in the 82nd minute broke the
deadlock, and fans had to be satisfied with a
1-0 result Scottish skipper Scott Brown,
took advantage thirteen minutes from time
in Warsaw, where his only goal of the game
gave the Scots a 1-0 win over Poland and
made Gordon Strachan a very happy man
At the Cardiff City Stadium, Wales came out
3-1 on top of Iceland. James Collins put the
Welsh ahead in the 12th minute, then Ashley
Williams, put one in his own net in the 26th
minute to level it for the Icelanders. Sam
Vokes pushed the Welsh further ahead in the
63rd minute, then seven minutes later, recent
Real Madrid multi-million signing, Gareth
Bale, made it three Northern Ireland had

World Cup hosts Brazil beat South Africa
5-0 in Johannesburg, that included a hat-trick

Italy 1-0, Argentina produced a goalless
encounter at Romania, and Germany beat
Chile 1-0, while Frances 2-0 win over the
Netherlands, ended a unbeaten streak of 17
games for the Dutch.

Champions League Reds & Blues

Progress
World and European club champions Bayern Munich maybe suffering mass tax evasion
investigations, but the guys on the field are still
in charge. After a 2-0 defeat by the Germans
at the Emirates, Arsenal were up against it
from the start at the second leg, March 11.
Bastian Schweinsteiger put Bayern ahead
in the 54th minute, while three minutes later
Lukas Podolski equalized for the Gunners.

Thomas Muller missed a penalty during the

final minute, as the 1-1 result puts Bayern in
the quarter-finals and Arsenal out.
Fighting a 2-0 deficit from their Etihad
encounter, Manchester City travelled to the
Nou Camp, where Lionel Messi put Barcelona on the scoreboard in the 67th minute.
Most of the action came at the end, when
Citys Pablo Zableta, got sent off in the 78th
minute, Vincent Kompany leveled it up scoring
a minute from time, then Dani Alves scored
in the closing seconds giving Barcelona a 2-1
win and a spot in the quarter-finals.
Chelsea grabbed the lead in the ninth minute after a Fernando Torres goal in Turkey,
but Galatasaray, came back for a 1-1 draw
when Chedjou equalized in the 64th minute.
At Stamford Bridge, March 18, the Blues
won the second leg 2-0, with first half goals
by Sammuel Etoo and Gary Cahill, that put
them through to a European quarter-final for
the ninth consecutive year.
Olympiacos, riding a wave of success
leading the Greek League by 28 points, turned
that confidence into a 2-0 home win against
Manchester United. Dominguez put the
Greeks on top seven minutes before the break,
while Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell, netted
the second in the 64th minute. A Robin van
Persie hat-trick at Old Trafford, clinched the
deal for the Reds, as a highly relieved David
Moyes joined the celebrations.

Europa League; Swans & Spurs

Out

After a goalless game in Wales, Swanseas

second leg in Italy against Napoli, did not appear to be in too much trouble with the score
1-1 with twelve minutes to go. Jonathon de
Guzman had equalized on the half hour, after
Insigne had given the hosts the lead in the 16th
minute, and the away goals rule looked good
for the lilywhites. It was not to be however.
Argentinian international Gonzalo Higuain
penetrated the defence and Gokhan Inler got
another in the closing minute for a 3-1 win
for Napoli, leaving Swansea, to ponder what
might have been.
Fighting a one goal deficit from the first
leg in Ukraine, Tottenham got off to a shaky
start at White Hart Lane against Dnipro, when
Roman Zozulya put the visitors ahead two
minutes after the break. Fifteen minutes later
Zozulya got his marching orders after administering a head-butt. During the meantime,
Christian Eriksen had put Spurs level in the
56th minute. Emmanuel Adebayor hit two
within four minutes (65th, 69th) of each other
and a 3-1 victory got Spurs through.
Extreme discomfort at White Hart Lane
in the last sixteen first leg, against Benfica,
where the Portuguese won 3-1. Rodrigo
got the first goal action in the 29th minute
and Luisao made it two, after 58 minutes.
Christian Eriksen put Tottenham back in the
game six minutes later, but Luisao scored
again in the 83rd minute. Spurs failed to get
their ignition cranked up until near the end
of the second leg in Portugal. Garay put the
home side ahead in the 34th minute, and then
Nacer Chadli scored twice for the Londoners
in the 78 and 79th minute, before a penalty in
the final minute ended Spurs European hopes
after a 2-2 tie prevailed.

English Cup Soccer

The Capital One English League Cup final

at Wembley, March 2, featured Sunderland
and Manchester City. A full house of 84,000
plus, saw Sunderland surge forward in an
early outbreak of passion and endeavour that
brought fruition in the figure of Fabio Borini,
who put the Black Cats ahead after just ten
minutes. Sky Blue fans had to wait until the
second half before the City discovered its
shooting boots as Yaya Toure found the net
in the 55th minute, and barely sixty seconds
later, Samir Nasri prevailed too. An intricate
match of skill and focus followed, but a goal
by Jesus Navas in the final minute sealed the
fate of the game, as Manchester Citys 3-1
victory gave them their third English League
Cup trophy the first since 1974, when they
beat Newcastle 3-0. For coach Manuel Pellegrini, it is his first British trophy, but surely
not his last.
The quarter-finals of the FA Cup, March 8-9,
saw Arsenal stride in to the semi-finals with a
convincing 4-1 win over Everton. Mesul Ozil
put the gunners ahead in the seventh minute,
while Romelu Lukaku equalized twenty five
minutes later. Mikel Arteta and a brace by Olivier Giroud brought it to four. Hull City turned
over an out of sorts Sunderland 3-0, where
mid-second half goal by Curtis Davies, David
Meyler and Matty Fryatt put a smile on Steve
Bruces face. Sheffield Utd have strung a run
of nine consecutive victories together to lift
them out of the Division One relegation zone,
and they kept their confidence brimming with
a 2-0 win at Bramall Lane over Charlton. Ryan
Flynn and John Brayford were the Blades
marksmen in the 65th and 67th minutes. New
League Cup holders Manchester City, faced
FA Cup holders Wigan at the Etihad, where
the Latics came through 2-1 winners. Jordi

Gomez put Wigan ahead with a penalty in

the 27th minute, while two minutes after the
break, James Perch made it two. Samir Nasri
got one back for the Sky Blues, two minutes
from the whistle.

Scottish Soccer

Earlier the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup,

March 8-9, witnessed St Johnstone win 3-1
at Raith Rovers. Joe Cardle put Raith level
in the 21st minute, after Gary McDonald had
put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute.
The Saints came back with another two,
courtesy of Nigel Hasselbank and Steven
Anderson. Adam Rooneys goal at Pittodrie,
eight minutes after the break, was enough to
give Aberdeen a 1-0 victory over Dumbarton.
Dundee Utd won 5-0 at Inverness CT, where
a double by Nadir Ciftci aided the visitors to
an easy win. Caley Thistle had Greg Tansey
sent off just before half-time and then Marley
Watkins got his marching orders in the 72nd
minute, leaving them to finish with nine men.
Albion Rovers have not got this far in the
Scottish Cup for 80 years, but they made their
presence known at the Ibrox, where Ciaran
Donnelly put them in front after sixteen minutes. David Templeton equalized for Rangers.
The game ended 1-1. Rangers won the replay
2-0, with goals from Fraser Aird and Jon Daly.
Barely a week after knocking Celtic out of
the Scottish Cup, Aberdeen nailed the Hoops
again, delivering the green and whites their
first premiership defeat of the season late
February, winning 2-1 at Pittodrie. Jonathan
Hayes and Adam Rooney had the Dons 2-0
up by half-time. Celtics James Forrest got
one back on ninety minutes.
At the Scottish League Cup final, March
16 at Celtic Park; Aberdeen were looking to
win the trophy for the first time in 19 years,
and Inverness CT was appearing in their very
first trophy final ever. A 51,000 plus crowd
watched the match go in to extra time with the
game ending up scoreless. The Dons won the
penalty shootout 4-2.

Beckham Showcases His MLS

Expansion Plans In Miami

David Beckham put on a full blown press

conference at the Miami-Dade College downtown campus, March 24, where his vision of a
new soccer stadium was unveiled. The image
of a 25,000 capacity, modern soccer arena
with the Miami skyline as a backdrop looked
very impressive. The former Manchester
United favourite wore a dapper grey suit with
a winning smile as he portrayed his dreams
for the new franchise.
Beckhams preferred location at the Port
of Miami, is also sought by the Miami Cruise
Industry, who would like to build a convention
centre, hotels and office towers on the site,
though Miamis downtown business leaders
are not very enthusiastic about the project.
Beckhams people apparently have other
Miami locations in mind, if the Port of Miami
site should fall through.
The following day, Beckham was in Tallahassee, where he met Florida governor
Rick Scott, and leaders of the Florida House
and Senate, where he admitted there were no
promises made, but feels hell get a fair hearing. Looking for the same kind of tax breaks
and deals that other Florida professional sport
sides receive, Beckham says he does not want
a special hand-out, just a parity and fairness
on par with other Florida sporting franchises.

Ex-Boxer, Promoter, Manager

Mickey Duff Dies
Mickey Duff, 84, the celebrated British
boxing manager and promoter, has died.
The London Ex-Boxers Association says
Duff, who was born in Krakow, Poland, died
in his sleep March 22. The association says
on its website that this is truly is the end of
a golden era in British Boxing.
Duff, who moved to England in the late
1930s, won 61 of 69 professional fights
before retiring from the ring at the age of 19.
He went on to manage 16 world champions,
including Frank Bruno, Joe Calzaghe, Jim
Watt and Alan Minter.
In 1999, Duff was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, which describes
him as one of the most knowledgeable
and accomplished men in the history of
the sport.

Arsenal: Mathieu Flamini

knocked home a Lucas Podolski
feed in the 53rd minute to pull the
Gunners even with Manchester
City, 1-1, and thats how the game
ended. A Flamini own goal in stoppage time
tied the score at 2-2 and ruined a remarkable
rally in which Podolski and Olivier Giroud
scored a minute apart to erase a 1-0 deficit
against Swansea City. Tomas Rosickys
long-range missile just 72 seconds after the
opening kickoff held up for the Gunners first
victory at White Hart Lane in 6 years (1-0).
Aston Villa: Ashley Westwoods
opening goal in the 13th minute
turned out to be unlucky for Villa,
as Manchester United scored four
to win comfortably. Fabian Delph worked a
one-two with Marc Albrighton to backheel
the goal by which Villa downed Chelsea, 1-0.
Goalie Brad Guzan bailed out teammate Karim
El Ahmadi by pulling his scuffed clearance off
the goal line. Christian Benteke scored goals
two minutes apart and Leandro Bacuna also
netted in a 4-1 demolition of Norwich that had
started poorly when Villa conceded a goal in
the third minute.
Cardiff City: Peter Whittingham
swung in a free-kick that Cala
bundled into the net to equalize at
Everton, but a stoppage-time goal
produced a 2-1 defeat. Mats Daehlis
goal deep into stoppage time capped off a
wild 3-3 tie at West Bromwich Albion. Cardiff
fell behind, 2-0, before Jordan Mutchs goal
cut the deficit in half and Steven Caulkers
back-header from Gary Medels free-kick
tied it up. Caulker scored twice in a 3-1
defeat of Fulham.
Chelsea: A pair of 1-0 defeats
dropped the Blues out of first
place. They were beaten, 1-0, at
Crystal Palace with several players
being rested for the upcoming Champions
League match with Paris St, Germain. A
John Terry own goal decided the match.
Manager Jose Mourinho was dismissed by
the referee after Willian had been sent off at
Aston Villa, and down to 10 men Chelsea
conceded in the 82nd minute. Four players
scored a goal apiece and Oscar bagged a pair
in a 6-0 thrashing of Arsenal that extended
Mourinhos unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge
to 76 matches.
Crystal Palace: An own goal
gave the Eagles their first league
win over Chelsea in nearly 24
years, a 1-0 decision at Selhurst
Park. Penalty appeals for challenges on Cameron Jerome and
Yannick Bolasie were denied, and it was
Joel Wards cross intended for Joe Ledley
that wound up in the net. Jerome also hit the
post and keeper Julian Speroni twice stopped
Eden Hazard en route to a memorable victory.
Glenn Murray converted a penalty kick for a
foul he drew that appeared to be just outside
the penalty area to earn the Eagles a 1-1 tie
at Swansea City.
Everton: After a listless first
half at Fulham, Everton stormed
to a 3-1 victory. Substitutes Kevin
Mirallas and Steven Naismith
scored eight minutes apart after an own
goal in the 50th minute had given them a 1-0
lead they squandered before pulling away.
Goals five minutes apart by Ross Barkley
and Romelu Lukaku followed up a Leighton
Baines penalty kick to provide a 3-2 triumph
over Swansea City. Seamus Coleman scored
in the third minute of stoppage time in a 2-1
defeat of Cardiff City. After a scoreless first
half Gerard Deulofeus deflected shot put
Everton in the lead. With the score 1-1 and
time running out, Colemans miskick somehow found its way into the net.
Fulham: Ashkan Dejagahs
fabulous blast cancelled out an
own goal by David Stockdale to pull
the Cottagers level with Everton at
1-1, but they had no answer as the visitors
scored twice more to win, 3-1. Dejagah
scored eight minutes after coming on as a
second-half substitute to give Felix Magath
his first win as manager, a 1-0 triumph over
Newcastle. The Cottagers generated zero
shots on goal as they were pummeled 5-0
at Manchester City.
Hull City: Shane Long personally dispatched his former club
West Bromwich Albion, which
sold him to Hull last January, in
a 2-0 victory. He won the penalty kick that
was saved yet on the rebound produced Liam
Roseniors first goal since 2009, then seven
minutes later netted the clincher himself. The
Tigers lost an incident-filled match at West
Ham, 2-1. After keeper Allan McGregor was
sent off with a straight red card and the Tigers
fell behind, Nikica Jelavic tied with the game

with his fourth goal for the club but a James

Chester own goal yielded the final result.
Liverpool: A 4-0 demolition of
Spurs swept the Reds into first
place with six matches to play.
After an early own goal, Luis
Suarez punished a defensive
miscue with a crisp finish into the bottom
corner to break the clubs record of goals
scored in a Premier League season set by
Robbie Fowler. Suarezs 29th goal moved
him to within two of the Premiership record.
Phillipe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson
scored 20 minutes apart in the second half
to up the scoreline and, more importantly, the
goal difference. Steven Gerrard and Daniel
Sturridge scored within minutes on either side
of halftime to down Sunderland, 2-1. Gerrard
converted two penalties and Suarez also
scored in a 3-0 win at Manchester United.
Manchester City: A red card to
Vincent Kompany in the 10th minute at Hull City didnt deter City;
they took the lead four minutes
later with a David Silva goal and tacked on
a clincher in the final minutes through Edin
Dzeko to win, 2-0. Yaya Toures hat trick
included two penalty kicks, and Fernandinho
and Martin Demichelis scored as well in a
5-0 thrashing of Fulham. Dzeko stunned the
Old Trafford crowd by scoring 42 seconds
into the match; he added a second goal and
Toure tacked on another in the final minute
of an emphatic 3-0 triumph.
Manchester United: A
plane towing a banner that read
Wrong One-Moyes Out flew
above Old Trafford as United
smoked Aston Villa, 4-1. Wayne Rooney
scored twice before halftime and Juan Mata,
who had won a penalty kick that Rooney
dispatched, netted his first goal for the club.
David Beckham was on hand to witness a
spectacular 55-yard lob from Rooney that
gave United a 1-0 lead against West Ham;
Rooney scored again as United won, 2-0.
Phil Jones headed United into the lead at West
Brom and goals by Rooney and substitute
Danny Welbeck made sure of a 3-0 victory.
Newcastle United: Keeper
Rob Elliot made his first start
of the season and could do
little to prevent a 4-0 mauling
at Southampton. His seven saves werent
nearly enough as 2,187 traveling Magpie fans
rued their wanderlust. Dan Gosling was fined
30,000 for breach of betting rules. Papiss
Dembea Cisse, thwarted three times by
excellent goalkeeping, finally broke through
in stoppage time to nail a header from Hatem
Ben Arfas cross. The goal came seconds
after Cheick Tiotes shot hit the woodwork.
Norwich City: Robert Snodgrass
opened the scoring and Alexander
Tettey drilled an incredible goal
a dozen minutes later in a 2-0
victory over Sunderland. Johan Elmander
and Snodgrass scored late goals a minute
apart at Southampton but the Canaries were
already down, 3-0, and conceded another in
stoppage time to go home with a 4-2 loss.
Bradley Johnson headed home a Snodgrass
free kick in a 1-1 tie with Stoke City.
Southampton: Jay Rodriguez
scored in the final minutes of
each half and Rickie Lambert and
Adam Lallana filled in the middle
as Saints crushed Newcastle United, 4-0.
Rodriguez and Lambert scored the middle
goals that were enough to edge Norwich
City, 4-2. Morgan Schneiderlin had opened
the scoring and Sam Gallaghers wrapped
it up in the 97th minute. Strained knee ligaments suffered in training will sideline Maya
Yoshida for the rest of the season but he is
expected to recover in time to play for Japan
in the World Cup.
Stoke City: The Potters fought
back after falling behind in the fifth
minute to overwhelm West Ham,
3-1. Peter Crouch equalized in
the 32nd minute, Marko Arnautovic scored
the winner through a crowd of players, and
Peter Odemwingie added a late clincher. They
won their first away match in seven months
by thumping Aston Villa,4-1. Crouch got the
ball rolling, Odemwingie scored the second,
and Steven Nzonzi also scored before halftime to wipe out an early 1-0 deficit. USA
international Geoff Cameron got the fourth
in the last minute.
Sunderland: Adam Johnson
scored midway through the
second half of a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of West Ham
United. Ki Sung-Yeungs header at Anfield
brought the Black Cats within a goal of Liverpool at 2-1 but his tally ended the scoring.
Johnson scored his seventh goal in as many
games and Fabio Borini and Jack Colback
were also on the mark in a 3-0 destruction
of Newcastle United. Borini hit the crossbar

and American Jozy Altidore failed to convert

a good chance after coming on as a sub in a
0-0 tie with Crystal Palace.
Swansea City: A 3-0 defeat of
Norwich ended a nine-match winless streak. Jonathan de Guzman
scored twice within eight minutes
and Wayne Routledge tacked on a third to
provide Swansea their first-ever win over the
Canaries in league play. Roland Lamahs goal
in the second minute sparked a strong first
half showing against West Bromwich Albion,
but momentum turned in the second half and
the Swans went down, 2-1.
Tottenham Hotspur: It was all
downhill at Anfield after Younes
Kabouls own goal in the second
minute and a Michael Dawson giveaway set Liverpool on their way to
a 4-0 thumping of Spurs. Christian Eriksen
led a rousing comeback that downed Southampton, 3-2. Eriksen scored in the 31st and
46th minute to wipe out a 2-0 deficit, and
in stoppage time squared a ball that Gylfi
Sigurdsson pounded into the net. Roberto
Soldado ended a two-month scoreless run
with his sixth goal of the season in a 1-0
defeat of Cardiff City.
West Bromwich Albion: A crazy
match with Cardiff City ended
3-3 despite West Brom taking an
early 2-0 lead and then scoring
an apparent winner in the fourth minute of
stoppage time. Morgan Amalfitano struck in
the second minute and Matej Vydra tallied
seven minutes later. After conceding twice,
the Baggies regained the upper hand when
Thievy Bifouma scored, but a point was all
they got. The Baggies won their first away
match since September when second-half
strikes by Stephane Sessegnon and Youssouf
Mulumbu cancelled out an early Swansea
City goal and earned them a 2-1 victory.
West Ham United: Andy Carroll put the Hammers in front in
the ninth minute at Sunderland,
Mohamed Diame doubled the
lead early in the second half, and keeper
Adrians six saves helped withstand a 27-shot
barrage in a 2-1 victory. Carrolls goal in the
fifth minute was all but forgotten by the end
of a 3-1 loss at Stoke City. He headed home
a Mark Noble free kick for his first goal in
nearly a year and though he caused a few
more moments of danger the Hammers were
not good enough. Nobles penalty kick plus
an own goal was enough for a 2-1 victory
over Hull City.

English League Two

Round Five

ODriscoll career crowned as

Ireland become Six Nations
Champions

England swept aside Italy 52-11 with

an irresistible 7-try victory. They needed to
catch up the Irish points difference to stake
their claim for the title. First they had to
reach 50 points, an immense feat against
the Azzurri in Rome. Sadly they conceded
an intercepted try halfway through the
second half which left them praying in vain
for a French win later in the day. But make
no mistake about it, England look the pick
of the European sides with a year to go to
the World Cup.
Wales enjoyed a runaway 52-3
defeat of Scotland at the Millennium Stadium, their biggest-ever margin of victory
against them. The course of the match
was decided after twenty minutes when
fullback Stuart Hogg, by some distance
Scotlands best player, late-charged Dan
Biggar, hitting him squarely in the face
with his shoulder after the Welshman had
kicked clear. Initially the referee issued a
yellow card but watching the replay on the
TV screens above the crowd called Hogg
back and made it a red. Thus weakened,
Scotland simply capitulated, ceding seven
tries to a rampant Wales.
The final match was decided by two
points in Paris, Ireland triumphing
22-20. It was Brian ODriscolls farewell
appearance and his team-mates did him
proud. BOD, as he is known on the pitch,
announced his genius in Paris in 2000
when he scored a hat-trick of tries. He
never looked back and it was entirely fitting
that 141 games later he should leave the
game as a champion in Paris.
Final placings: 1st: Ireland, 8 points Goal Difference +83; 2nd England 8-+73;
3rd Wales 6-+43; 4th France 6-+1; 5th
Scotland 2- - 93; 6th Italy 0- -99.

a silver in the slalom with guide Caroline
Powell, and another silver and fourth medal
in the super-combined, becoming the most
successful athlete in British Paralympic history. She went for a fifth medal on the final
day of competition, but was forced to withdraw
because of illness.
The British wheelchair curling team of
Aileen Neilson, Gregor Ewan, Bob McPherson and Angie Malone, captured the bronze
medal. They were beaten 13-4 by Russia in
the semi-finals, but recovered from that horrendous defeat by medaling with a 7-3 win
over China. Its the best medal count for Britain
in a Paralympics, since they won ten medals
at Innsbruck in 1984.
Elise Christie who had the misfortune to
be disqualified three times in the speed skating at the recent Winter Olympics, grabbed a
medal at the World Short Track Speed Skating
Championships In Montreal, March 15, where
she took silver in the 500m.

JUST TWO weeks after the regular 2014 Winter

Sochi Olympics ended, President Vladimir
Putin was at the Olympic Fisht Stadium, where
a blaze of colour and music heralded the
opening ceremony of the Winter Paralympic
Games, March 7-16. The Russian President
made no mention of the upheaval in the nearby
Crimea, while athletes and spectators could be
forgiven for noting that anything was amiss.
The nine day extravaganza, featured 547
athletes from 45 countries, chasing 72 gold
medals. Visually impaired skier, Millie Knight
led out the fifteen strong British team. At
15-years-old, she was the youngest member
of the British squad, who competed in alpine
skiing and curling. Jade Etherington, who
celebrated her 23rd birthday in Sochi, and
retains just five percent of her sight, captured
Britains first medal with a silver in the downhill
ski, accompanied by guide Caroline Powell.
Britain has been competing at the Paralympics since its inception in 1976, but has
never won a gold medal. That all changed on
March 9, when Kelly Gallagher and guide
Charlotte Evans, won the Super-G slalom
event on the Rosa Khutor course, while Jade
Etherington took a second medal with the
bronze. Gallagher, a 28-year-old from Bangor,
County Down, has oculocutaneous albinisim
and like many of the skiers competing, are
visually impaired.
It was nerve wracking, but Im delighted
with the result, she told BBC sport.
Jade Etherington claimed her third medal

RRAnelka Leaves West Brom

Following Quenelle Ban
Six Nations Round Four

Welsh hopes dashed by youthful

England

ENGLAND COMFORTABLY deposed the

reigning champions, Wales, with a 29-18
home win. Wales failed to get their incisive
running game to work, too often preferring
aimless kicks downfield. England invariably
won that battle and scored an early try by
Danny Care taking a tapped penalty five
metres out and running over untouched. To
this was added a neat kick ahead by Billy
Twelvetrees for Luther Burrell to ground
again untouched.
Only Leigh Halfpennys goal-kicking, six
out of six, kept Wales anywhere within sight
of England but Owen Farrells efforts, five
penalties and two conversions, meant England were always well ahead. Wales looked
old by the end while England were looking at
a bright future.
Ireland bounced back from their defeat by
England to inflict a savage 46-7 beating on
Italy. At the heart of their success was man
of the match, Brian ODriscoll, in his world
record140th Test match. His last appearance
at home had the crowd in ecstasy. He set up
the first two tries with brilliant sleight of hand
offloads and was the inspiration for the fourth
of Irelands seven tries.
He was substituted on the hour and would
reappear only once more in the final match
against France.
Scotland threw away their game against
France. With early tries from Stuart Hogg
and Tommy Seymour, they were comfortably
superior to a shambles of French side but a
weak pass from Duncan Weir as the Scots
moved in for the match-settling score was
picked off by French winger Yoann Huget
who ran the length of the field to score a try
that put France two points up.
As the shadows lengthened over the
game, Scotland earned a penalty for a 17-16
lead and should have closed out the game.
Alas, there was just time for Tim Swinson to
be harshly penalised for a scrum infringement
right under Scotlands post. Jean-March
Doussain made no mistake. For the second
time this championship the French had
won against the odds in the closing minutes
19-17.

STRIKER Nicolas Anelka announced he was

leaving Premier League club West Bromwich
Albion with immediate effect after being
suspended for five matches for a racially
aggravated goal celebration.
Anelka was suspended for performing
a gesture which is known in France as a
quenelle and regarded as anti-Semitic.
Anelka said on his Twitter account last
month that he decided to leave the club after
being offered to rejoin the group under
certain conditions I cant accept.

RRItalian Businessman
Disqualified From Buying Leeds

THE FOOTBALL League has blocked Italian

businessman Massimo Cellino from taking
over second-tier club Leeds.
The league says Cellinos recent conviction for a tax offense in Italy constituted a
disqualifying condition under its owners and
directors test.
The decision leaves Leeds in a state of
limbo over its future ownership. Cellino has
already paid more than 2m into the northern
England club.
Cellino has 14 days to appeal the Football
League boards decision.

RRCeltic Clinches Third Straight

Scottish League Title

CELTIC clinched its third straight Scottish

league title in stylish fashion March 26, beating Partick Thistle 5-1 to take an unassailable
26-point lead in the standings with seven
matches still to play.
Celtic secured the championship at the
earliest date in the calendar since 1929.
With fierce Glasgow rival Rangers spending its second season out of the top flight as
punishment for financial mismanagement,
Celtic has had free reign in the Scottish
Premiership over the past two years.
Neil Lennons side has lost just one
league game all season on its way to sealing a 45th league title. Rangers has won 54
championships.

RRCycling Great Hoy On Wrong

End Of Fans Twitter Abuse

AS BRITAINS most successful Olympian,

cycling great Chris Hoy is used to being
showered with praise from sports fans.
There are occasions, though, when Hoys
Twitter account is filled with a barrage of
abuse.
Disgruntled fans of Chelsea took to the
social networking site last month to vent
their anger at Premier League referee Chris
Foy for sending off two of the teams players
as well as manager Jose Mourinho during a
1-0 loss to Aston Villa.
Much of the abuse ended up mistakenly
directed at Hoy. Hoy, a six-time Olympic
champion, tweeted that the abusive messages were coming thick and fast! With an
emphasis on the thick.
