According to an ancient teaching, there are four basic personality types, each of which has an identifying name and a set of characteristic emotions. Cholerics are born leaders. They have very strong personalities and tend to want to be in control. One of their strengths is that they usually get a lot accomplished. Phlegmatics show little or no emotion. They are not moved by impressions. Their reactions are missing or quickly fade. They have very little interest in what is going on around them. Sanguines are easily excited by external influences, reacting quickly, although the impression is often short-lived. They prefer to follow others and, as a result, have little stability. Melancholics are easily excited by things. However, their initial reaction of excitement is weak, but the impression remains long and grows stronger with later impressions of a similar nature.
