Alexander Fleming didnt plan on revolutionizing medicine by discovering
the worlds first antibiotic on September 28, 1928, but thats exactly what
happened. During that year, Fleming had been investigating the
properties of staphylococci.
On September 3, 1928, Fleming returned to his laboratory having spent
that August on vacation with his family. Before leaving, he had stacked all
his cultures of staphylococci on a bench in a corner of his laboratory.
Upon returning, Fleming noticed that one of his cultures was
contaminated with a mold, and that the colonies of staphylococci
immediately surrounding it had been destroyed. He identified the mold as
being from the Penicillium genus and named the substance penicillin.
Fleming found that cultivating penicillin was quite difficult. He finally
abandoned his attempts to grow it, and not long after, Florey and Chain
at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford took up researching and mass
producing it with funds from the U.S. Sadly, Fleming did not receive any
of the profits.

Advanced: Reading Discussion
What is the main idea of this passage?
According to the article, Fleming eventually abandoned his attempts
to grow penicillin, and not much later, two men discovered how to
mass produce the drug. Fleming didnt receive any money for his
great discovery. In your opinion, was it right for the two men who
started mass producing penicillin to keep all the profit, or should
they have shared some of it with Fleming?
Penicillin was discovered by accident. Do you think that a large
amount of scientific and medical breakthroughs are the results
of serendipity or not? Explain.
