(For students admitted in 2013 only)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 60
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
*****
1 (a) What do you mean by circular prestressing and linear prestressing?
(b) Explain Magnel Blaton system of post tensioning system with the help of neat sketch.
(c) What do you mean by externally and internally prestressed members?

2 A beam of symmetrical -section spanning 8 meters has a flanges width of 200 mm and a
flange thickness of 60 mm respectively. The overall depth of the beam is 400 mm. The
thickness of the web is 80 mm. The beam is prestressed by a parabolic cable with an
eccentricity of 150 mm at the centre and zero eccentricity at the supports with an effective
force of 100 kN. The live load on the beam is 2000 N/m. Draw the stress distribution
diagram at the mid span section for the following condition: Prestress + self weight,
Prestress +self weight +live load. Take weight of concrete as 25 .

3 A prestressed concrete beam 250 X 300 mm deep is prestressed with steel wires of area
200 provided at uniform eccentricity of 55 mm and subjected to an initial stress of
1000 The span of the beam is 12 m. Find the percentage loss of stress: (i) If the
beam is pretensioned, (ii) If the beam is post tensioned.
Shrinkage of concrete is for pretensioned and for post
tensioned. Ultimate creep strain of concrete per for
pretensioned and per for post tensioned. Relaxation of
stress in steel of initial stress; Anchorage slip ; Friction coefficient for
wave effect

4 The end block of a prestressed concrete beam 100 mm X 200 mm supports an eccentric
prestressing force of 100 kN. The depth of the anchor plate is 50 mm. Estimate the
magnitude and position of principal tensile stress on a horizontal plane passing through
the centre of anchorage plate. Analyze the end block using Magnels method. Take for x/d
ratio of 0.54, and

5 A cantilevered portion of prestressed concrete bridge 600 X 1650 mm is 8 m long and
carries a reaction of 350 kN from the suspended span at free end together with a UDL of
60 kN/m inclusive of its own weight. The beam is prestressed by 7 cables each carrying a
force of 1000 kN of which 3 are located at 150 mm, 3 at 400 mm and one at 750 mm from
the top edge. Calculate the magnitude of principal stresses at a point 550 mm from the top
of cantilever at support section.

6 A continuous prestressed concrete beam ABC (AB=BC=10 m), has a uniform rectangular
cross section 100 mm X 300 mm. The cable carrying an effective prestressing force of
360 kN parallel to the axis of the beam and is located at 100 mm from the soffit.
(a) Determine the secondary and resultant moment at centre support B.
(b) If the beam supports an imposed load of 1.5 kN/m, calculate the resultant stresses at top
and bottom of the beam at support B. Assume the density of concrete as 24 kN/ .
(c) Locate the resultant line of thrust that is C-line for the beam ABC.

7 A prestressed concrete beam of rectangular section 120 mm wide and 300 mm deep
spans over 6 m. The beam is prestressed by a straight cable carrying an effective force of
180 kN at an eccentricity of 50 mm. If it supports a imposed load of 4 kN/m and the
modulus of elasticity of concrete is 38 kN/ compute the deflection at the following
stages and check whether they comply with IS code specifications:
(a) Upward deflection under (prestress +self weight).
(b) Final downward deflection under (prestress +self weight +imposed load) including the
effects of creep and shrinkage. Assume the creep coefficient to be 1.8. Take the density of
concrete as 24 kN/ .

8 A cylindrical prestressed concrete water tank of internal diameter 30 m is required to store
water over a depth of 7.5 m. The permissible compressive stress in concrete at transfer is
13 N/ and the minimum compressive stress under working pressure is 1 N/ The
loss ratio is 0.75. Wires of 5 mm diameter with an initial stress of 1000 N/ are
available for circumferential winding and Freyssinet cables made up of 12 wires of 8 mm
diameter stressed to 1200 N/ are to be used for vertical prestressing. Design the tank
walls, assuming the base to be hinged. The cube strength of concrete is 40 N/ .
