Revision Test 1

Magnetic Effects of Electric Current

Class: 10
Subject: Physics
Marks: 20
Revision Test No. 1

I. Answer the Following Questions:
1. Write the S.I unit of Magnetic Field?
Answer: Tesla
2. What is the magnitude of charge of electron?
Answer: Negative
3. What is the frequency of power transmission in India?
Answer: 50 Hz
4. What is the thumb represent in the Flemings left hand rule?
Answer: Direction of force
5. Name the device producing electric current
Answer: Generator

II. Answer the Following Questions:
1. Write any two properties of magnetic field lines.
Answer: The two important properties of magnetic field lines are,
i) The magnetic field lines never cross one another.
ii) Their density decreases with increasing distance from the poles.

2. What is meant by electromagnetic induction?
Answer: Whenever the magnetic field through a conductor change, and the
induced current and e.m.f is set up in the conductor. This is known as
electromagnetic induction.
III. Answer the Following Questions:
1. State Flemings Right Hand Rule.
Answer: Flemings right hand rule states that, if you place the thumb, pointing
finger and middle finger of your right hand mutually perpendicular to each other
such that the thumb points towards the direction of motion of the conductor and
the pointing finger points towards the direction of magnetic field then the
direction of the middle finger gives the direction of the induced current.
2. State Flemings Left hand Rule.
Answer: This rule states that if you stretch the thumb, index finger, and middle
finger of your left hand such that they are mutually perpendicular to each other,
then your index finger represents the direction of the field, the middle finger
represents the direction of the current, and the thumb represents the direction of
the force experienced by the conductor.

IV. Answer the Following Questions:
1. a) What is an armature? What is its advantage?
b) What are the advantages of electromagnet over permanent magnet?
Answer: a) Armature is the rotating part of a motor or a generator. In a motor the
armature rotates when electricity is provided thus it converts electrical and
magnetic energy into mechanical energy. In a generator the armature rotates to
convert mechanical energy into electrical energy in the presence of a magnetic
field.
b) i) Electromagnets strength can be increased or decreased according to
our use but permanent magnet cannot be done so.
ii) Electromagnet can be used for a very long period but permanent
magnets can be used for a less period of time as its power losses.
iii) Permanent magnetic property loses when we heat the material. It
cannot be regained once again. But electromagnets are capable of regaining its
magnetic properties.
