engineering problems by applying methods from
Natural Sciences and Engineering, and provide the
necessary knowledge and background required for a
professional career in research, development and
industrial application, in particular in Electrochemical
Energy Technology.
Energy Science and Technology is a research-oriented
programme addressed to students with a strong
interest both in fundamental scientific concepts and in
their application.
Educational organisation
Pre-semester course (for one week) starting in October
each year, offering an intensive course in German for
daily life as well as an introduction to life in Germany
and in Ulm
In a three-semester period, lecture courses, seminars
and labs are offered in the fields of Physical Chemistry,
Organic and Inorganic Materials Chemistry, Materials
Science, Engineering, Energy Science and
Technology, Surfaces/Interfaces/Heterogeneous and
Electrocatalysis and Simulation and Modelling.
The final semester is reserved for the Master's thesis
which is research-oriented and has a duration of six
months (full-time).
Study abroad unit(s)
German participants may participate in programmes at
partner universities.
Forms of assessment
Each lecture course concludes with a written exam. In
some seminars and labs, students are required to give
an oral presentation and provide a hand-out.
The Master's thesis is judged based on performance
during the research period, the written thesis and an
oral presentation.
Altogether, the programme consists of 90 credit points
(according to ECTS) for the coursework and 30 credit
points for the Master's thesis.

Job opportunities
After the first semester, some student research
assistantships are available. They are awarded
according to personal qualifications, mostly in
connection with research projects.
There are also some student jobs available in the
companies surrounding the university campus in the
"Science City".
However, work opportunities must be arranged by the
students themselves.
Funding opportunities
within the university
Excellent students can apply for a scholarship in the
last semester while working on their Master's thesis.
Language requirements
An internationally recognised English language test
certificate (TOEFL, IELTS) is required for all students
who do not speak English as their native language.
Academic requirements
For international students:
A BSc or BEng (or higher degree) in Chemistry,
Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering,
Materials Science or a closely related field
For German students or foreign students with a
German university degree:
A BSc, a BEng (or higher degree) or a Diploma in
Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related
field, or a Diploma from a Fachhochschule or
Berufsakademie in one of the above subjects.
For all students:
Above-average performance in the completed degree,
good knowledge of English, typically demonstrated by
a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test
with a score of at least 570 (paper-based), 88 (internet-
based), or 230 (computer-based), a willingness to work
in a challenging, multicultural environment. Above-
average performance on a GRE or related test will
increase the chances of admission.

About the university
Founded in 1967, Ulm University has some 10,000
students. It specialises in medicine, natural sciences,
engineering, computer science, and quantitative
economics/finance. It is a campus university with
excellent public transport. The campus, located within
lush forests on a hill on the outskirts of the city, also
hosts a variety of public and industrial research and
development centres, as well as three major hospitals,
jointly referred to as the "Science City".
Over the years, the university has served as a nucleus
for the foundation of "The Science City". This rapidly
growing community now consists of several specialised
research institutes such as the Institute for Laser
Technologies in Medicine and Measurement or the
Solar and Hydrogen Energy Research Institute, to
name just two. Many small start-up companies as well
as major research facilities of world-famous companies
are also based there. This close proximity of academic
and industrial R&D is designed to improve interaction
between industrial needs on the one hand and
academic teaching and research on the other.

About the city
Ulm is a beautiful city with charming historical
surroundings, situated on the River Danube and
bordered by the Swabian Jura Mountains. Founded in
850, Ulm is famous for its "Mnster", with the world's
highest church steeple, and as the birthplace of
physicist Albert Einstein. Today, it is a culturally diverse
town, shaped by its growing economy, which has
undergone a successful transition from a traditional
industrial environment to its present strength in
research, development and academia.
Ulm is located in the heart of southern Germany, near
Stuttgart, Munich, the Alps and Switzerland. Thanks to
its high-speed train connections, it is within easy reach
of three major airports (Stuttgart, Munich, and
Frankfurt).
The greater Ulm area, including the neighbouring Neu-
Ulm and a variety of smaller towns, has some 250,000
inhabitants.
