The Sun
Summer temperatures lend
themselves to beach days and bar-
becues but also something more
dangerous forest fires.
High winds are most con-
ducive to forest fires. The sun
shines this time of the year di-
rectly down on the leaves and nee-
dle litter, section forest fire war-
den Tom Gerber said. Every-
thing hasnt leafed out yet and
that dries out.
According to Gerber, if the
area receives an inch of rain, con-
ditions could still be high the next
day due to the sun drying the area
and high winds.
If we have multiple days of
decent drying, the spotty showers
can make it moderate, but it could
be high fire danger by the after-
noon, said forest fire observer
Ben Brick, who watches the
forested areas of Marlton, Med-
ford, Shamong and Tabernacle at
his station at the tower in Med-
ford Lakes off Stokes Road.
According to Gerber, the area
has been deemed a Wildland
Urban Interface, due to residents
integrated in a densely wooded
area.
Were the eyes in the sky for
everyone on the ground, Brick
said.
The Medford Lakes tower was
constructed in 1948 after World
War II and stands 141 feet tall, ac-
cording to Gerber.
Gerber oversees Division B
with towers at Apple Pie Hill in
Tabernacle, three stations in Bat-
sto, the Cedar Bridge Station,
Jamesburg, Lakewood, Lebanon
and Medford.
A lot of people arent home in
these wooded communities, and
Ben is standing up here looking
for smoke, Gerber said.
According to Brick, the towers
stay in constant contact, especial-
ly when a forest fire is burning.
When Brick identifies smoke,
he looks into the sight glass to
pinpoint its approximate location
on a round map of the area with a
string, providing him with a coor-
dinate.
Hopefully, another tower can
see the smoke, and theyll get
their degree, and well line it up
to pinpoint where it is, Brick
said.
After receiving the sight loca-
tions by radio from two of the
nearest towers, Brick uses az-
imuth circles, a navigational tool
with strings located in the center
of the circle along a map, to trian-
gulate where the fire is located.
According to Gerber, the sys-
tem is accurate up to a few yards.
There are newer systems that
probably wouldnt work as well.
Theyre usually infrared or digi-
tal cameras that probably would-
nt be as good as if the person was
doing it for you, Gerber said.
Its an old tried and true sys-
tem.
Once the fire is called in, three
trucks that can hold up to 500 gal-
lons of water each and equipment
for the firefighters, and a bulldoz-

and residents know the daily level of forest fire danger. TOP: Recent
summer temperatures can quickly dry out brush, leading to an ele-
vated risk of fire for the wooded areas of Tabernacle, Shamong and
Medford Lakes. The forest fire lookout tower on Stokes Road stands

was built after World War II and works in conjunction with surround-

Seneca High School already
recognized Dave Knecht as
teacher of the year earlier this
year, and now, Knecht is receiving
that same recognition on a larger
scale, as he was named Burling-
ton Countys teacher of the year.
I was definitely shocked and
honored, Knecht said. We work
with so many dedicated staff
members, so being recognized is
truly an honor.
Knecht, a Gloucester City na-
tive, worked as a student teacher
at Seneca while obtaining his de-
gree from The College of New
Jersey. He earned his bachelor's
degree in English from TCNJ and
a master's degree in educational
leadership from Delaware Valley
College. Upon graduating from
TCNJ, he learned Seneca was hir-
ing an English teacher. The
match was a perfect one for
Knecht.
It was great, it was where I
wanted to be, Knecht said. The
students and the staff make it an
amazing place to work. The stu-
dents love to go to the school. I re-
ally noticed the excitement of the
teachers and the kids when I stu-
dent taught, and it was something
I wanted to be a part of.
Entering his seventh year at
the school, Knecht teaches ad-
vanced placement language and
composition, English I and Eng-
lish II in addition to an English
elective, discussion and debate.
During his teaching career, he
has been a class advisor to the
class of 2014, a National Honor
Society advisor, debate team
coach and an advisor for the
gay/straight
alliance. Later
this year, he
will be pre-
senting at the
Conference on
English Lead-
ership. Knecht
credits Seneca
for his success
as an educator.
The staff
has been so
supportive since I was a student
teacher here, Knecht said. Its
been an amazing group to work
with since I first started at
Seneca.
The awards have been piling
up for Knecht as he was already
named Seneca High School's and

trict's teacher of the year earlier
in 2014. The state will announce
its teacher of the year in October.
When he was named the schools
teacher of the year, Knecht was
excited to share the honor with
his students.
It was really nice. They were
clapping and congratulating me,
Knecht said. The students really
got into it and were excited for
me, which was great.
Knecht marks the 11th teacher
in the Lenape Regional High
School District who has won the
countys teacher of the year dis-
tinction. Previous teacher of the
year winners from the district
are: William Lovelle, 1995-1996; In-
grid Williams, 1999-2000; Susan
Brandt, 2000-2001; LeeAnn Low-
den, 2001-2002; Gary Williams,
2004-2005; Carol Smith, 2005-2006;
Kate DeSantis, 2006-2007; Justin
Smith, 2007-2008; Kim Condurso,
2012-2013; and Rick Bozarth, 2013-
2014.
er are dispatched to the scene.
According to Gerber, the state
protects 3.1 million acres, 122,880
of which make up Wharton State
Forest.
Forest fire observers deter-
mine the level of forest fire risk
each day with the potential to
change as the day progresses.
Brick checks the weather two
times a day, taking into considera-
tion the level of humidity and
wind. The information deter-
mines if the day is low, moderate,
high, very high or extreme wild-
fire danger levels.
According to Gerber, fires can
start for a number of reasons, in-
cluding hot carbon from a brake
shoe, burning leaves in the back-
yard, people intentionally setting
fires, cigarettes and kids playing
with matches.
Weve weeded people setting
fires intentionally out over the
years, but we still have them,
Gerber said.
Backyard fires can cause forest
fires and are a big deal now.
They werent as in style 15
years ago, Gerber said.
Residents setting backyard
fires in pits or chimineas are re-
quired to have a permit from the
DEP, according to Gerber.
They dont realize that, just
because its not on the ground,
its still dangerous, Gerber
said.

Detectives from Red Lion Station are
seeking the public's help with identifying
victims of jewelry thefts that have oc-
curred over the past several years in
Burlington County.
On April 21, Bordentown troopers ar-
rested a 42-year-old woman, of Medford
Township, for the theft of more than $2,000
worth of jewelry from a Hainesport Town-
ship home.
During the past month, Red Lion Station
troopers have been investigating a theft of
approximately $11,000 worth of jewelry
that was stolen from a Shamong Township
home.
Through various investigative means,
detectives have determined that the
woman is connected with various thefts
over the past several years in the Burling-
ton County area. During at least one of the
thefts, the woman was employed by the vic-
tim as a pet sitter. She stole jewelry from
the home of her employer and sold the pro-
ceeds to various pawn stores.
Possible victims are asked to contact the
Red Lion Station Detective Bureau at (609)
859-2282.

his editorial is not about Oba-
macare, per say. It wont be a
support for the infamous
health-care reform act nor a call for its
repeal. Instead, this editorial is about
health care in general, and how theres
more than one problem under the um-
brella that needs to be solved.
Let us first backtrack and start from
the beginning...
Last week, a NBC 4 New York I-Team
investigation uncovered the story of
Bayonne resident Baer Hanusz-Ra-
jkowski.
Last August, Baer cut his finger on a
hammer, an injury that he thought
might need stitches. So Baer went to
his local emergency room the hospi-
tal, for our purposes, doesnt matter.
Turns out, no stitches were needed,
nor was an X-ray. So Baer left that
emergency room with a tetanus shot,
bandage and antibacterial ointment,
all administered by a nurse practition-
er.
The total bill for those services: al-
most $9,000. He was charged $8,200 for
the emergency room visit, $180 for a
tetanus shot, $242 for sterile supplies
and $8 for the ointment.
When asked for a comment, the CEO
of the hospital blamed the insurance
company, saying it decided to not
renew its in-network pricing contract
with the provider, which now doesnt
offer fair reimbursement rates.
Its the expected response. The med-
ical center blames the insurance com-
pany.
The insurance company, were sure,
would blame the medical center or, bet-
ter yet, blame Obamacare. Its a blame
cycle that never stops.
Baers story is a great example of
how the health-care system in this
country is flawed dramatically. Oba-
macare alone wont fix the problem at
least not as its in operation today be-
cause it only attempts to fix one spoke
and not the whole wheel.
The problem isnt just health insur-
ance, its also the health-care providers
such as this hospital. Medical centers
dont have to charge $8,200 for an emer-
gency room visit, but they do. Why?
Because, until recently, they could
without batting an eye, and insurance
companies would cover it.
But thats no longer the case. Now,
insurance companies are not covering
many medical expenses or not cover-
ing them as much as they did in the
past and the patients are the ones
who are left to suffer.
The choice ends up being a bad one
for the patient should I go to the doc-
tor if there is potentially nothing
wrong with me and pay an exorbitant
bill, or should I take the chance that
Im fine and not seek help?
Thats not a choice we should force
people to make.
Until we completely reform health
care, though from the health insur-
ance to the actual health-care
providers thats an increasingly like-
ly scenario for many.
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on health-care
reform? Is Obamacare enough? Or do we
need more, or better, reform? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.

The Lenape Regional High
School District announced the
debut of Prepared to Succeed.
This new feature on the dis-
tricts website showcases six
outstanding seniors from each
of the districts four high
schools. These students are
highlighted on the website with
a profile and a short video shar-
ing their thoughts about how
the district has helped them per-
sonally prepare for the future.
Each year, district students
continue the rich tradition of
excellence, which has been the
cornerstone for nearly 60 years.
In recent years, this history of
producing successful students
has been highlighted with our
alumni television series Where
Are They Now? and through
the Academic Halls of Fame at
each of our four high schools.
Prepared to Succeed is another
way of spotlighting these suc-
cessful students.
District students are provided
with unlimited educational ex-
periences throughout their high
school career, which helps pre-
pare them to be successful in an
ever-changing world.
Our goal is to ensure stu-
dents utilize every opportunity
available in LRHSD to support
their post-secondary goals, said
Superintendent of Schools
Carol Birnbohm. After gradua-
tion, we expect students to con-
tinue to place themselves in an
environment where the opportu-
nities are as plentiful as those in
LRHSD and to make smart
choices with those opportuni-
ties.
