Alder dies suddenly at 66

District 1 Ald. David Kneebone died unexpectedly last

Thursday, Aug. 7, after a brief
illness. Kneebone, 66, had
served on the Common Council since being elected in April
2012 and was a progressive
populist with a quick wit.
He lived in Stoughton for the Kneebone
past 21 years.
Council president Michael
Engelberger said Kneebone did a good job for
the council and the citizens.

Strong open house turnout

BILL LIVICK

Local interest in a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter

is strong, if the turnout for
an informational open house
Monday is any indication.
A steady stream of residents walked through the
training room at the Stoughton EMS building on Fourth
Street and talked with nearly
a dozen Wal-Mart representatives and consultants about
the project. The company had
a few videos playing on TV
screens, along with numerous
displays resting on tripods,
all depicting, explaining or
promoting some aspect of the
proposed 152,000-squarefoot Supercenter.
The new store would be
built in the proposed Kettle
Park West development at
the northwest corner at the
intersection of U.S. Hwy. 51
and State Hwy. 138. It would
replace a 41,000-square-foot
store on Hwy. 51 that was
built in 1988.
Mayor Donna Olson and
a majority of the Common

Council support the project, while five alders have

consistently opposed it.
Olson and a handful of
alders attended Mondays
open house.
Public opinion at the
event appeared to be
about equally divided,
although project detractors were more vocal than
supporters.
Colette Oxley and
Ramona Strohbusch were
among the supporters.
Its going to be nice to
be able to cross Jackson
Street and go straight into
the parking lot, Oxley
said.
The elderly women
praised Wal-Mart consultants for being knowledgeable and informative.

Police join statewide effort

to curb drunk driving
The Stoughton Police
Department will join
hundreds of other departments around Wisconsin
in the Drive Sober or Get
Pulled Over campaign.
The effort to curb drunk
driving runs from Aug. 15
to Sept. 1.
SPD Sgt. Patrick Frisch
said the campaign will
include two extra officers
on duty from 7 p.m. to 3
a.m. the nights of Aug. 15,
16, 29 and 30.
Frisch also said the
department would use
high-visibility tactics,
including LED signs, as
people drive into the city
on those nights as a deterrent to people driving after
theyve consumed alcohol.
We try to refocus the
whole police department
on OWI enforcement during that time, Frisch said.

Statewide, the campaign

will also include television and radio commercials and updated features
to the Zero in Wisconsin Drive Sober mobile
app, according to a news
release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Over the past 10 years,
the number of drunk
driving-related crashes,
fatalities, injuries and
incapacitating injuries
have all dropped, but too
many people are still getting behind the wheel
when theyre impaired,
WisDOT Bureau of Transportation Safety director
David Pabst said in the
release.

More than a decade after

her death, a former Edgerton teachers dream of
turning 284 acres of beautiful farmland into a public
park in the Town of Albion
is gaining traction.
Irene Silverwood, who
taught business education
for more than 40 years,
donated the land along
Rice Lake, about 11 miles
east of Stoughton, to Dane
County a year before she
died in 2003.
Her dream was that the
land, woods and waterfront
property would remain a
working farm but also be
used as an educational center to teach others about
sustainable agriculture.
Silverwoods dream is
slowly taking shape, and
next weekend, volunteers
are inviting the public to
Silverwood Farm Park to
see the progress theyve
made.
The parks Harvest
Fest will run from 1-5
p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23,
and includes hourly tours
of the property, a 2:30 p.m.
performance by The Truly
Remarkable Loon and an
art show featuring 10 metal-framed corn cribs that
will each house original art
by 10 different area artists,
said Katie Vance-Whitten,
president of the Friends
of Silverwood Farm Park,
a volunteer organization
formed last fall to spearhead the project.
There will also be childrens craft projects and
food for sale that includes
fresh veggies grown at the
farm. Admission is free.
For most of the past
decade, the land was leased
to farmers to grow crops,
with rental fees set aside
for future park development.
But Dane County has
committed $150,000 this
year and next to help develop the park, which someday could include hiking
and ski trails, access points
to Rice and Sweet lakes
and a learning center complete with a meeting room,
dorms and kitchen, VanceWhitten said. County officials expect to refine the
countys master plan for
the park by early next year.
This year, the park has
made huge strides, thanks
to a steady supply of labor
from Operation Fresh Start,
a Madison-based nonprofit
that offers job training,
education and employment
to high school drop-outs
and other at-risk youth
ages 16 to 24.
Four days a week, OFS
sends up to 10 workers to
clear trails, pull invasive
species, remodel the old
farm house and tend vegetables in an eight-acre
garden plot. Last month,
the group began erecting
a greenhouse near the garden.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is also
using the land to grow 40
acres of switchgrass, which
can be used as a biofuel,
and UW-Extension is doing
crop research there, too.
Other groups growing
food in the garden include

schools and Madison-based

Wal-Mart updates commission

Store design inspired by

Stoughton downtown
MARK IGNATOWSKI
Unified Newspaper Group

City of Stoughton Planning

Commission members got an
update on Kettle Park West
Monday but took no action on
anything related to the west side
development.
Officials from Wal-Mart
shared a presentation with the
commission and answered a few
questions about the proposed
store design and layout after
giving a similar presentation at
an open house just a half hour
before the commission meeting.
The exchange focused mostly on
general concepts for the store,
rather than specific details that
will be hashed out during the
next phase of approvals.
The commission has already
approved a general development
plan for the commercial area
along Hwys. 138 and 51. The
next phase will focus on specific
details for each lot, including the
proposed 153,000-square-foot
Wal-Mart Supercenter.
Wal-Mart officials gave an
overview of their concept for a
store design, which would be the
first of its kind in terms of exterior design. The design team drew
inspiration from Stoughtons
downtown when planning the
exterior, architect Gabriel Massa
said.
Company officials gave an
overview of the approval process thus far and mentioned some
aspects of the citys big box ordinance for which the company

might ask for flexibility:

Materials used for cross
walks and the width of access
openings in the parking lot
Amount of landscape islands
in the parking lot
Landscape grading requirements
Width of facade changes less
than the required 6 feet
Fencing materials for the garden center
No plans were approved Monday, and officials only had a few
questions about where the company thought potential customers
might come from and how many
parking stalls would be provided.
The company plans to have
about 603 parking spaces and
expects to draw customers from
Stoughton and the surrounding
area.
Wal-Mart public affairs director Lisa Nelson said store data
collected from nearby stores
show that customers who live
in the Stoughton ZIP code travel to other stores to seek items
they cant get at Stoughtons
40,000-square-foot location. She
added that items like groceries
are a big draw for other WalMart stores and are a key part of
the companys business plan.
No future date was set for
when a Specific Implementation Plan for the site might head
to the commission, but it would
likely be after an economic feasibility study is completed.
That report is due in the middle
of this month, city planning and
development director Rodney
Scheel said. No exact date has
been given for that report.

Stoughton Speaks
What do you think about the prospect of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter being built here
to replace the existing Wal-Mart store?
Mary Jaeger, Stoughton: I feel indifferent about it. Im not really sure, but it
probably wont change the city too much. Im not very happy with the big development theyre talking about.

Jaeger

Ethan Frost, Stoughton: I think it would detract from the community and our
small businesses. Wal-Mart has a large enough share of the market already.
Frost

Kevin Sorg, Stoughton: I think its a horrible idea, especially if its at taxpayer
expense. Big Box retail isnt going to help the city grow.

Sorg

Dave Leikness, Stoughton: Id kind of like to see it bring more people to town,
but it would hurt the smaller businesses.

Leikness

Jen Post, Stoughton: Im kind of on the fence but leaning toward no. I like
the small-town feel of Stoughton the way it is.
Post

Kristin Rhyner, Stoughton: Im OK with it. Im not against Wal-Mart. I shop at

the one thats here now.

Wal-Mart: Critics still wary; supporters excited

asking a lot of good questions.

Carter told Nelson that shed
read news reports stating that
Supercenters are Wal-Marts
poorest performing stores. She
suggested that if the existing store
is too small, maybe the company
could expand it. She thinks the
current store is a reasonable
size.
Nelson responded that marketing surveys indicate that Stoughton customers are not satisfied and
want a larger store.
We have to build a store thats
going to be successful here and
that works for this community,
Nelson said. Customers here
have an expectation of Wal-Mart,
and were not meeting it. They
have to drive to Monona or Janesville to get what they need.
Carter also questioned WalMarts employee health insurance
program.
Ive read that more Wal-Mart
employees in Wisconsin are on
BadgerCare than in any other
state, she said.
I cant answer that one, Carter
said, noting that the states health
insurance program for low-income
people has changed and shes not
sure where it stands.
Nelson corrected information
that Wal-Mart spokeswoman
Delia Garcia provided to the Courier Hub last week. Gracia had
said that a new Supercenter would
create about 85 new jobs, in addition to the jobs already provided at
the existing store.
On Monday, Nelson said the
Supercenter would employ about
300 people and bring 120 to 130
new jobs to the city.
Ardis Gyland doesnt buy WalMarts storyline for new jobs in
Stoughton. She and her husband,
Percy, own the Nordic Nook
downtown. Ardis Gyland predicted a new Supercenter would
wipe out Main Street.
I dont know of one town
that has a Wal-Mart that it hasnt

We said, get here in a
hurry. Its going to be a
nice, nice complex.

When asked if shed learned

anything new at the open house,
Gyland said, Everything that
Ive heard only supports what I
fear pharmacies and restaurants
and others going out of business
downtown because of the new
development out there.
She also criticized city officials:
I do not think the city supports
Main Street.
City resident Brenda Riddle,
who works at the existing WalMart store, holds an entirely different opinion about the proposed
Supercenter.
She thinks its a wonderful
project and that the city needs
it.
I love the lay of the store, the
way its set back, and the landscaping is beautiful, she said.
I cant see it taking away from
downtown. We have mostly niche
stores there.
She praised Wal-Mart reps and
consultants for explaining everything just perfectly very informative.
Ingrid West made the rounds
voicing my concerns about the
proposal. She told the Hub she
doesnt like the location of the
proposed new store because its
not within walking distance for
most people.
West spoke with consultant
Ryan Solum, a civil engineer with
Manhart Consulting.
I appreciate being able to talk
one-on-one and have them hear
my suggestions, West said. Im
not sure our community can support this kind of development.
I told him (Solum) they should
build downtown in the railroad

Ardis Gyland

corridor. Theres plenty of room

there.
Stoughton Ald. Greg Jenson
(D-3) was excited about the open
house and Wal-Marts plans. He
said renderings of the Supercenter
look great.
The drawings depict a modern Supercenter storefront, along
with images of landscaped driveways and how the development
would generally appear from the
two highways. Nelson refused
to provide an electric copy of the
renderings, saying they were not
ready.
Its a beautiful building, he
said. They said theres not another like it. It was designed specifically for Stoughton. I think its
impressive that they would go to
that extent to create something for
us.
Council president Mike Engelberger (D-2) has opposed the project and said the open house didnt
do anything to change his mind.
He told the Hub he was assured
by Forward Development Group,
the company assembling the businesses that would operate in the
first phase of the Kettle Park West
development, that none of the proposed $5.1 million in taxpayer
subsidy would go to Wal-Mart.
Despite the information, he
remained unconvinced about the
merits of the project.
He also wondered why wasnt
this dog and pony show given to
the council a year ago?

Stoughton Landmarks Commission volunteer, received
the citys Historic Preservation Award this year.
The award was given during a brief presentation ceremony at a Common Council
meeting last month, according to a news release from
Alan Hedstrom, vice chair of
the citys historic preservation
committee.
A new category of award
for service to the community
in historic preservation was
created by the commission

the Art Wendt Historic Preservation Service Award to
honor Wendts many years of
service to the commission and

Wendt, a retired professional photographer, has been
either a member or volunteer

During that time, he has

Hedstrom, who has worked
alongside Wendt for many
years, praised him not only
for the sheer volume of work,
but also for the variety and
quality of excellence.

The late writer Flannery OConnor

kept a devotional journal when she
was in her twenties and a student at
the Iowa Writers Workshop. It has
recently been published under the title A
Prayer Journal. OConnor was a fervent
Catholic and her journal is filled with
interesting reflections on spirituality, as
well as writing, which she saw as a way
to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments
early on that I do not know you God
because I am in the way. Please help
me to push myself aside. Throughout
the journal we witness an earnest
young woman struggling heroically to
be more pious, and striving to get out
of Gods way, i.e., how to get rid of
the ego and let God fill up the space.
Her simultaneous struggle to destroy
the ego while seeking literary fame is
sometimes the focus of her reflections,
as when she says Dont let me ever
think, dear God, that I was anything but
the instrument for Your story, just like
the typewriter was mine. God desires
to work through all of us, through our
words and our deeds, if we can only get
our egos out of His way.
- Christopher Simon via Metro News

in Christ Jesus to do good works, which
God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jeff Daniels gets real with singing, songwriting

Newsroom actor
moves beyond guitar
novelty in local show
BILL LIVICK
Unified Newspaper Group

Jeff Daniels has made

his mark on American
culture appearing in more
than 60 films, stage performances on and off
Broadway, and winning a
2013 Emmy for his starring role in the HBO
series, The Newsroom.
The 59-year-old actor
has been nominated for
more than a dozen awards
for his work in television,
film and on stage.
Daniels is also an
accomplished guitarist, singer and songwriter
whos released five fulllength albums. Hell demonstrate that aspect of his
talent Saturday, Aug. 23
when he performs with
his sons blues-rock band
the Ben Daniels Band
at the Stoughton Opera
House.
The five-piece band and
Daniels are embarking on
their first tour together,
performing 15 shows in 18
days. It will be Jeff Daniels second appearance in
Stoughton.
In a telephone interview
with the Hub, Daniels said
hes excited about opening
another creative chapter in
his long career. He sees it
as pulling together all of
his professional experience.
It kind of takes everything I do and bottles (it)
into one night, Daniels said. It uses the guy
that can be on the Broadway stage the actor
who knows what to do in
front of a camera and an

audience and puts a guitar in his hands. It also
takes the playwright that
Ive become out of the
Purple Theatre Company,
and the songwriter and
singer that Ive become
since I started playing for
audiences in 2002.
Daniels noted there are
things he loves about playing music live with a band.
First, he has complete creative control over the performances vs. working in
film or television. At the
same time, its unpredictable.
For me, creatively, its
going to be very exciting,
he said.
And theres another
perk: Look, to be a father
and to have a child that
even wants to talk to you
when theyre in their 20s,
theres some value in that
let alone get on stage
with you.
Daniels began playing guitar shortly after
he graduated from high
school in 1973. But he
never considered it seriously until the late 1970s,
when he caught a concert
in New York City by the
late Steve Goodman.
He said seeing Goodman
perform was a revelation.
He walked out with
just his acoustic guitar,
Daniels recalled. To see

Steve Goodman hold and

entertain an audience with
just his acoustic guitar, I
never forgot it.
Years later, when it
came time for me to get on
stage, I went back to what
that guy was able to do
all by himself. And then I
started to study other performers.
After Daniels had
achieved fame through
acting, he began to think
about other avenues of
artistic expression. He
established the Purple
Rose Theatre Company
in his native Michigan
after starring in the 1985
Woody Allen film Purple Rose of Cairo. Later,
he began studying guitar
technique with masters
Keb Mo and Stefan Grossman.
At first Daniels wrote
novelty songs, most with
an element of humor. But
eventually he developed
into a skilled guitarist and
wordsmith.
Starting out I had to
deal with the fact that I
was an actor with a guitar, he explained. And
so I wrote a lot of those
novelty songs. If William
Shatner Can I Can Too
and Dirty Harry Blues
and others that played
right into those who
bought the tickets so they
could see the guy from
Dumb and Dumber.
Then Keb said to me
once, You know, you
dont have to play those
songs anymore. Youre
good enough.
Daniels hopes the current tour will demonstrate
that point, while simultaneously giving audiences
a great and entertaining
show.
Were going to try to
come out of the rehearsal

room with a lot of songs

that not only I dont get to
play solo, but that I dont
try to apologize for being
an actor with a guitar, he
said. There will be musicianship, but there will
also be an eye on making
sure each song can stand
alone as something that
connects with the audience.
You know, you want
to earn their respect, he
added. There is a difference between being really
good in your living room
and being really good in
front of 500 people.
Its a big leap. But if
you can make that, and
still satisfy that guitar
players who are sitting in
the audience, then personally Ill feel very good
about the night.

So he knows all about keeping an eye on utility billsat home and at
his small business. And when it comes to saving money, hell take all
the help he can get. Greg called his friends at Stoughton Utilities to
learn how to cut energy costs without sweating the heat. They helped
him program his thermostat, schedule yearly maintenance of HVAC
equipment, and install timers on lights and sprinkler systems. And
with reduced monthly bills, Greg might even have some extra cash to

Kyle Bates hit a grand slam to propel the Utica Association to a 9-5 win over the Fort Atkinson Generals Sunday at Jones Park. Bates pitched seven innings and picked up
the win Sunday. He struck out three and walked two, lifting Utica to the Southeast Section championship game; (below) Utica first baseman Brad Ashmore fields a high
throw from third, but tags Fort Atkinson Bryan Wallace to complete the out in the fourth inning.

Kyle Bates powered the Utica

Association to a 9-5 Southeast
Section win over host Fort Atkinson.
Bates helped Utica jump out
to a 9-0 lead with a fifth inning
grand slam. He also tossed seven
innings on the mound, striking
out three.
The victory helped Utica
avenge a 3-2 loss to the Generals
at home in which two ill-advised
throws cost the As a Southeast
Section victory.

In two games head-to-head
during the regular season, both
games went down to the wire.
Utica handed Albion two losses

Kraus earns USA Wrestling

All-American honors
Stoughton High School junior Collin Kraus earned AllAmerican honors at the USA Wrestling Cadet Freestyle National
Tournament held in Fargo, N.D.
Earning his third career All-American honor, Kraus battled
through a 90-man bracket to earn eighth place.
Also competing at the event Zach Hasselberger, who finished
with a 4-2 record in Junior Freestyle, and sophomore Garrett
Model, who finished with a 3-2 record in Cadet Greco-Roman.

Working ahead in the

count, playing solid defense
and scoring timely runs was
a blueprint that helped the
Stoughton Merchants to a
14-2 regular season record
and a top seed.
Playing on the edge in several games throughout the season, including a 6-5 win over
Albion the last time the team
met, Stoughton finally got cut
on Sunday.
The top-seed and host
throughout the Southeast Section playoffs, the Merchants
fell, 10-4, following a decisive
call in the seventh inning.
Trailing 4-3 entering the top
of the seventh inning, Stoughton saw Aaron Lasowski and
Adam Gregory single with
one out and Josh Eastman
hit by a pitch to the load the
bases.
Things got worse one hitter
later when Kyle Johnson hit
what looked like an inningending double-play ball to
second baseman Simon Maurice, who flipped to shortstop
T.J. DiPrizio covering the bag.
Forced to throw around Gregory at second, one run scored,
as DiPrizio was unable to turn
the double play, throwing low
to first base.
The ump said TJ came off

Wimmer wins Triple Crown

Challenge Championship
BY JOHN WELLS
Special to the Courier Hub

cars were on the lead lap.

Wimmer elected to start on
the outside for the restart and
it paid off for him as he was
able to maintain the lead over
Wilberg. On lap 77, Murgic moved past Wilberg into
second place, but five laps
later Wilberg took his position back but still with a lot of
ground to close on Wimmer.
Meanwhile, Feiler, who led
the point standings coming
into the night, had dropped to
fifth place and a late race pass
by Travis Sauter put him in
sixth place.
But Wimmer was a man on
a mission as nobody would be
able to catch him tonight as he
picked up the checkered flag.
Wilberg finished in second
followed by Murgic, Holzhausen, Sauter, and Feiler.
This car was incredible tonight, said Wimmer.Everything worked out
for us.
Runner-up Wilberg added,
I like these four tire races. The car runs good on these
nights.

Chris Wimmer picked up

the win tonight in the Triple
Crown Super Late Model
Challenge 100-lap feature and
also became the champion of
the Challenge Series for 2014.
Wimmer finished the three
race series with 314 points
just ahead of Dave Feiler, who
was second with 308 points
and defending champion
Casey Johnson with 265.
Tim Schendel and Skylar
Holzhausen led the 24-car
field to the green flag with
Holzhausen taking the early
lead. Wimmer was up to second after the first lap while
Bobby Wilberg moved into
third place on lap three.
Wilberg maintained his lead
over Wimmer, but by the halfway point the lead was dwindling and on lap 55 Wimmer
took over the top spot passing
Wilberg coming out of turn
four.
Wimmer continued to lead
until the competition yellow at
lap 75.Wilberg, Feiler, Nick
Murgic, and Jeremy Miller Goldade powers to
rounded out the top five as the victory lane
crews came out on the front
Ryan Goldade won the
stretch to work on the cars for 20-lap feature for the Daves
10 minutes. At this point 14 White Rock Sportsman.

With one lap to go, Will

Rece fell off the pace and had
to settle for seventh place.
This after point leader Kody
Hubred had to go to the pits
earlier in the race allowed
Goldade to take over the point
lead in the division as he easily picked up the win.
I dont like to capitalize
on anyones misfortunes, but
Ive had my share this year,
too, said Goldade from victory lane.
Goldade was fast qualifier
with a lap of 20.306 with Don
Wickstrum getting the win in
the heat race.

Snyder takes Bandits

checkered flag
For the fifth time this season, Dan Snyder won the
20-lap feature for the Pellitteri
Waste Systems Bandits.
In addition to the win, Snyder picked up $500 for being
the highest finishing driver
under 25 years old.
Brandon DeLacy set fast
time with a mark of 15.248
while Schmidt won the heat
race.
Racing continues on Friday,
Aug. 15 with the return of the
Late Models along with the
Trucks, Sportsman, Bandits,
and Legends.

A beautiful
day for a race
More than 160 people participated in the second annual Viking
Booster Trek on Aug. 2.
The Stoughton Sports Booster held
a community 5K fun run/walk, and
more than 30 volunteers helped
make the event possible.
All proceeds of the event went to
the Viking athletic programs of

Stoughton: Merchants bounced by Albion

Continued from page 9
the bag, but he was on the
bag. Plus, the fact that the
kid never slid, it should have
been interference and a double play, Stoughton manager Dale Seffens said.
Rather that being out of the
inning, however, the Merchants went on to give up
five more runs.
You cant put it all on one
play, there were others we
should have made, but one
pitch or one play can be the
turning point and that was it
for them, DiPrizio said.
Tyler Oren extended the
Tigers lead with an RBI
single before Kris Agnews
double to the left-center
fence plated two more runs.
Agnew (2x5) eventually
scored when Marty Johnson
reached on an error to score
the Tigers 10th and final
tally.
Of Albions four losses
during the regular season, two had come against
Stoughton.
Tigers starter Josh Eastman kept the Merchants in
check for eight innings, fanning seven and walking one.
Veteran Mike Nanstad,
who walked in the gamewinning run the last time
Albion came to Stoughton,
sat the Merchants down in
order in the ninth.
Nanstad also did some
damage with his bat, driving
in two runs in the first inning.
The Tigers never trailed from
that point as center fielder
Lasowski (3-for-5) tripled
and Gregory added a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Eric Gerber walks off the field Sunday after flying out to center
field for the final out in a 10-4 loss as Albion celebrates in the
background.

The Merchants bats came

alive in the fourth and sixth
innings, when two hits and
three RBIs from DiPrizio
pushed the score to 4-3.
The victory moved Albion,
a team that wouldnt have
reached the playoffs a year
ago, into the section finals at
1 p.m. this Sunday in Utica.
Albion finished third overall in the west division of the
Southeast section, but a new
format voted on by the SE
Section managers, allowed
the Tigers to steal Clintons
spot based on head-to-head
records.
I think whatever team
deserves to be in, should be
in, DiPrizio said. These
guys should be and they
showed it today.
Of the four No. 1 seeds, the
Merchants were one of two
to lose in the first round of
the playoffs. Verona (16-0)
finished the regular season as
the only undefeated team in
the league only to fall against
former Merchant pitcher Ben

Riffle and the upstart Oregon

Orioles.
The surprises kept coming
last Sunday for top-seeded
Middleton, which defeated
Stoughton for the league
championship a year ago, as
the 29ers were shocked in
the second round by Cross
Plains. Only Eastern Section
champion DeForest remains
as a top seed.

Night League
The Merchants head to
Cazenovia in Thursday playoff action for a 7:30 p.m.
game at Cazenovia Memorial
Park after Stoughton defeated
the Fort Atkinson Generals
5-3 behind a complete game
pitching effort by Erick Sperloen.
Sperloen allowed three
earned runs while striking
out six and giving up six hits.
Dave Hanson lead the Merchants offensively with four
hits, including a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

Dane Schultz, who
tossed the final two
innings for the save, also
drove in a pair of runs.
Vike also added an RBI.
Utica first baseman Brad
Ashmore and second baseman Doug Vike also added
extra basehits, collecting
doubles.
Lead-off hitter Andy

Martin and Ashmore finished a combined 4-for-7

with five runs scored in
the win. Christian Stokstad
and Schultz (2-for-5) were
the only other As to collect multiple hits.
Meanwhile, Nick Raether finished 2-for-2 with
one run scored. Of Fort
Atkinsons 14 hits as a
team, 10 came from the
top five hitters, including Bryan Wallace, who

finished 2-for-5 with two

runs scores.
Knutson drove in a pair
of runs for the Generals,
while Bastien, Wallace and
Crandall each knocked in
one.
Dan Dean fanned three
for the Generals in five
innings, while Chris
Koepke (one inning) and
Frank Raff (three) each

Have coffee with a cop Saturday

Coffee Break: Pig roast added this year

attendees will have a chance
to chat with local law
enforcement officers while
sipping some java Saturday.
Officers from the Stoughton Police Department and
community members can
come together in an informal setting to discuss community issues and build
relationships while drinking
coffee together, the department said in a news release.
We hope that community
members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring
concerns, or simply get to
know our officers, said
Chief Greg Leck. These
interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.
The event is part of a
national initiative to get
police and community members to meet each other outside official contact, according to the news release.
The program aims to
advance the practice of community policing through
improving relationships
between police officers and
community members one
cup of coffee at a time,

according to the release.

Coffee with a Cop provides
a unique opportunity for
community members to ask
questions and learn more
about the departments work
in Stoughtons neighborhoods.
The program aims to give
people a chance to meet
with police outside of emergency situations where emotions can affect the interactions between police and the
public. Other communities
in the area participate in
similar National Night Out
events in August.
Those situations are not
always the most effective
times for relationship building with the community,
and some community members may feel that officers
are unapproachable on the
street, the release read.
Coffee with a Cop breaks
down barriers and allows for
a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.
All community members
are invited to attend. The
event begins at 9 a.m. Aug.
16, at the Coffee Break Festival at Mandt Park.

The Stoughton Chamber of Commerce along

with support from local
service organizations and
businesses organizes
the annual event. Chamber director Erica Dial and
visitor services director
Laura Trotter said folks
will be able to find a lot
of the familiar activities
and some coffee samples
from a variety of different
roasters.
One new attraction will
be a pork roast put on by
Joe Conant, Dial said.
Hes getting there early
like, two in the morning, Dial said. (Theyre)
going to get it going so
that its ready by 10 or 11
a.m.
The Stoughton Lioness
club will provide other
concessions for sale, as
well.
Once youve got a full
stomach, head over to the
roasting area and sample
the different brews from
eight or nine different
roasters.

companies.
Admission to the event
is free, but festival-goers
are encouraged to purchase a tasting mug for $6
to sample all of the coffees. The mug features a
design by Cheryl Schumacher, who incorporated
the citys famous clocktower into a coffee pot.
If a cup of coffee isnt
your cup of tea, there will
be beer for sale in the
park.
Trotter said the taps will
trend to more Wisconsin
beers this year.

fishing would teach them
patience.
David is survived by his

Jesse (Tracy) Kneebone of
Baraboo; a sister, Roberta
Kneebone of Verona; and

Our loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather

John Eugene Lauretic Jr.
entered into eternal life on
Aug. 9, 2014.
John was born in Illinois on Aug. 25, 1929, to
John and Gladys (Bowen)
Lauretic. He was raised in
rural Stoughton and graduated from
Stoughton
High School in 1949. John
joined the U.S. Army after
high school, serving in
the Army Band during the
Korean War.
On Nov. 28, 1952, John
married the love of his life
and soul mate Shirley Ellen
Cole. Together they lived
in Stoughton where they
raised their seven children.
John worked for many
years as a Tool and Die
machinist. John took great
pride in his work and his
creations. After his retirement, John joined Shirley
driving a school bus for
the Stoughton Area School
District.
John had a love for farming, golf and music, which
included playing in many
bands including Stardusters, Uncle Johnny and his

Orchestra and Alpine Brass.

John was an avid camper
belonging to the Good
Sams Bell Ringers.
After John and Shirley
both retired, they enjoyed
travelling with their Weekender Group, playing cards
and enjoying time with their
friends at Taylor Ridge
Apartments in Cottage
Grove. But spending time
with his family was Johns
favorite part of retirement.
John was a past Boy
Scout Leader, member of
the American Legion Post
59 and member of Abiding
Shepherd Lutheran Church
in Cottage Grove.
John is survived by his
loving wife of 61 years
Shirley; children, Daniel
(Linda) Lauretic, Sharon
(Thomas) Bates, Theresa (Mike) Whalen, John
(Cheryl) Lauretic III, Timothy (Teresa) Lauretic, Nancy (William) Johnson and
Brian (Tina) Lauretic. He is
also survived by 11 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents and sisters,
Virgene Meredith and Phyllis Quale.
Funeral services were
held on Wednesday, Aug.
13, 2014, at Abiding Shepherd Lutheran Church, 406
W. Cottage Grove Rd, Cottage Grove. A private family burial will take place at
a later time.
Dad, although we are
apart now, youre always in
our hearts; in every single
thing we do, you play the
biggest part.

He was good for the

city, Engelberger said.
Born in 1948, Kneebone
was raised on an 80-acre
farm in western Dane County near Paoli. He married
Georgene Fink in May 1970.
The couple had two adult
children: Aaron Kneebone of
Edgerton and Jesse (Tracy)
Kneebone of Baraboo.
Dave worked in both labor
and management and had
experience negotiating longterm contracts. Hed worked
as a newspaper publisher and
Sunday school teacher and
had been on the executive
board of a couple of unions,
he told the Courier Hub in
2012.
Kneebone was a printer by
trade, according to an obituary in this weeks Hub, and
a member of the International Typographical Union.
He served as Madison ITU
chapel chairman and later
treasurer of the Milwaukee chapter. He worked at
Madison Newspapers Inc.
and was proud of his later
involvement with the Madison Press Connection.
He first sought a District 1
seat on the Common Council
in 2011, following the death
of Larry Weiss. He came in
second in a three-way race
for a council appointment.
He later won the seat in the
spring 2012 election.
Kneebone took his seat on
the council at the same time
as Engleberger and Ald. Tricia Suess.
He certainly was passionate about the issues,
Suess said Tuesday.
He possessed a folksy

and was quick-witted. As
an alder, he seemed to have
a comedians timing and a
knack for delivering clever
one-liners.
Politically, he was something of a progressive populist. He also had an occasional sharp tongue.
Some of the things he
said were controversial
sometimes, but he advocated
for the citizens, Engelberger
observed.
A comment he made during the July 22 Common
Council meeting was quoted
in the July 31 edition of the
Hub. In an article about
Stoughton Hospitals desire
to vacate sections of two
streets, Kneebone referred to
people opposed to the idea,
saying, The residents feel
theyre victims of the powerful. That bothers me a lot.

Engelberger noted that he

and Kneebone had a lot in
common.
He was a union leader
and supporter all his life,
and so am I, he said. Hes
going to be missed.
At his home on the Yahara
River in Stoughton, Kneebone loved feeding ducks,
geese and other animals that
would flock to his yard.
He commented several
times about how fortunate he
was to live on the river and in
this city.
When Kneebone sought
a council seat in 2011, he
responded to a question
about the attributes that make
him qualified for the job by
saying, I love my neighbors. In church, I learned that
pride is a terrible sin. I like
people, and most of them
like me at least, I hope so.
