Hale Kula Elementary School

AUGUST 2014 Parent Bulletin

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Office: 622-6380 www.HaleKula.k12.hi.us Waianae & Ayres Aves on Schofield Barracks, Hawaii

Aloha, Parents!
Welcome to our Hale Kula `Ohana! I hope all of you had a wonderful first two weeks of
school! We look forward to a terrific school year.

As you are aware, our construction project has posed a challenge in that several areas on
campus are blocked off. Phase I is just about done (administration building, custodial
building with restrooms adjoining the cafeteria); Phase II should be ready, hopefully in
December or January (two-story classroom building); and Phase III will begin shortly
(demolition of the office and library buildings and construction of a new library/tech-media
center, and student center as well as a covered play court). This entire project should be
complete in 2016.

This monthly newsletter, published by our Parent Community Networking Center (PCNC)
coordinator, Ellen Petry, is a great way to communicate with you about school happenings,
school celebrations, and suggestions for ways you can get involved in your childs education.
The bulletin is also available on-line at our school website. Visit our website at
http://www.halekula.k12.hi.us for more information about Hale Kula. We also have a
Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hale-Kula-Elementary-
School/117009605044941) and a Twitter account (Hale_Kula_es) to update you regarding any
school news. Finally, we have a weekly push notification blog to share upcoming activities
or information at hkeshighlights.blogspot.com. We hope you will sign up to get the latest
information! We

Our schools vision is Hale Kula Elementary empowers learners to explore, discover, create,
and share. We invite you to work with us throughout this school year to ensure success for
all learners (staff included) at Hale Kula!

In 2009, Hale Kula received a six-year accreditation term through the Western Association
of Schools and Colleges. This accreditation is validation of the positive teaching and
learning that are taking place here at school. Our focuses for the school year are based, in
part, on the Visiting Team recommendations, and continuous improvement will always be
our primary goal so that we can positively impact student achievement. This year, our six-
year term expires, and we are applying for another accreditation term. A team will be on
our campus in the spring to monitor our progress towards our goals. We will be engaging
parents in the discussions; we will keep you informed about any meetings or opportunities
to participate.

We look forward to partnering with you throughout this school year!

Mahalo,
Mrs. Iwase, Principal
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Jan Iwase, Principal

When I became principal over 12 years ago, the Parent Teacher Organizetion requested that
we hold our P-T Conferences earlier (they had traditionally been held in late October) so
they could help their child before they started to slip through the cracks and develop
negative habits. We agreed, and for the past few years, we have two conferences one in
the first quarter and a second Student-Led Conference in the spring.

You will be receiving a letter on August 13 to sign up electronically for a time to meet with
your childs teacher. At that meeting, the teacher will share how your child is doing in
school, what he/she can improve on, and how you can support your child at home.

Please follow the instructions parents shared that they love this new sign-up system! You
can use your computer, a Smartphone, or another mobile device to access the website to
sign up for a date and time that works for you. If you have several students attending our
school, you may want to get on ASAP so you can sign up for conferences on the same day.

If you need assistance, check with your childs teacher. We hope to get 100% of our
parents attend their childs conference.

Visitors on Campus

Other than the 15 minutes when dropping off students and the 15 minutes around picking
up students, we do request that visitors on campus, including parents, sign in at the main
school office and pick up a visitor's pass. This is a security issue; we need to know that all
adults on campus have a valid reason for being here. We greatly appreciate your kokua
(cooperation/assistance).

Supervisors Needed in the Cafeteria

Hale Kula Elementary is currently in need of lunch supervisors to assist students during
their lunch periods between 10:30 and 12:30. At this time there are 3 positions
available. Pay is $8.00 per hour for 1.5 hours per day. Please contact vice principal Agnes
Leinau 622-6380 or 305-3431 to set up an appointment.

Nene Discussions for 4th & 5th graders

4th and 5th graders are invited to read and participate in Nene Lunch time book
discussions. The books we discuss are contenders for the state's annual Nene Award; an
award given to the best work of fiction and selected by students in grades 4, 5 & 6. Each
4th & 5th grade classroom received 12 books, compliments of the Hale Kula PTO and book
fair profits. The discussion calendar is available on the library website and in each
classroom. Please encourage your child to participate!
Library Updates
Michelle Colte, Library Media Specialist

The library has a new home in G4! Students visited the library the first weeks of school for
orientation and book borrowing. A HUGE thank you to the amazing efforts of our library
assistant Ms. Janet Huszar and help from soldiers, teacher Teresa Cramer and even our
former custodian, Mrs. Francine Ahinga, for creating such a beautiful library in our
temporary home. Were fortunate that Mrs. Amanda Pemberton returns as our library clerk
this year & she helped Mrs. Colte prepare F4 for the technology/research side of library
lessons.
Students will borrow books with their classes every other week. We hope you will ask
your child about the books he/she borrowed and squeeze time for reading into your familys
schedule. The library is also online! http://halekulalibrary.weebly.com Take a peek at
upcoming events, browse our online resources, and see what your children are
researching/learning in the library. Two favorite online resources students love:
Tumblebooks and PebbleGo! Username for both is halekula and the password is eagles.
We also ask for your help in reinforcing proper book care when your child brings
books home. Students investigated book damages during library orientation and came up
with these library book care rules:
Turn the pages at the top corner
Books inside the backpack, water bottle on the outside
Keep books in a safe place--away from pets & younger siblings
Wash hands before reading
Keep food and drinks away from books
Never write or draw in a book
Per Department of Education policies, students will be assessed fines for damaged books.
If we work together, we will minimize these fines. Thank you for your support.
We have many exciting family events and literacy opportunities planned! I look
forward to seeing you and your children at these events.

PTO Notes

What does PTO do? The Hale Kula Parent Teacher Organization fosters a fun
environment for students at Hale Kula by organizing events like Fall Festival and having
Friday Store. The PTO also raises funds for Hale Kula. Did you know that if we do not
raise funds through the PTO then YOUR CHILD would not have Art class! YOU would
have to pay a lot more for field trips. The funds also pay for the Hawaii Opera to come to
our school...in fact PTO provides funds for almost every program Hale Kula offers. Last
year the PTO ( that's YOU! ) raised close to $40,000 in funds that went directly back into
the school. WOW! Make sure to bring in those BOX TOPS and LABELS for education,
that is how we buy much needed PE and recess equipment.

The PTO board is excited about this new year and want to make it the best
ever! Our first Friday Store will be on August 22nd, make sure you stop by for an ice cream,
get a Hale Kula T-shirt for your student and yourself, and just say hello. Our first PTO
meeting is August 20th at 11am in P14, you are more than welcome to attend. EVERYONE is
a PTO member, but we would love if you would make your Spirit Donation in the amount of
$10 to pledge your support for Hale Kula. In return you will receive a gift. You don't have to
volunteer your time, but we would love to have you, just let us know how you want to
help. Please "like" our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/halekulapto and visit our
website at www.halekulapto.com
