My Teaching Context

Firstly, I would like to begin by saying that although I am

not teaching for the moment I have given classes before. I
had my firs experience about 6 months ago. It was in a
school in Irapuato. I have to say that this colegio is a very
beautiful place for students to study. I taught 3rd, 4th, 5th and
6th graders. One interesting fact is that this school is a
catholic private school. Every class had a minimum of 25
students. I truly believe that having this amount of students
helps both teacher in his/her teaching and students in their
learning process. Even though it was my first experience as
an English teacher; I really enjoyed the short time that I
taught to these students. Especially 3rd graders because I
think that these students were the ones that really behaved
properly and really wanted to learn English. By saying this I
do not mean that 3rd graders are the best kind of students
because each school is different and it can vary. The main
point is that I acquired a lot of experience and that I faced
some issues that I was afraid of when teaching. For
instance, talking to people out loud.
By that time I had never given classes before so it was a
great experience for me and I can say that I really learned a
lot. Now I beleive that I am more student-centered because
of that experience.
The main point is that I acquired a lot of experience and
that I faced some issues that I was afraid of when teaching.
For instance, talking to people out loud.
In Colegio del Bosque they follow some methologies; for
instance: TPR, PPP and the audio lingual method.
The course book is called blue planet and there are some
others also. I believe that the course books are very
complete and appropriate books for students, because they
include many reading exercises; they also have listening,
writing and speaking exercises. And what is more important
is that the course books works on the 4 skills of the
students. Plus they come with CD roms.
By that time I had never given classes before so it was a
great experience for me and I can say that I really learned a
lot. Now I beleive that I am more student-centered because
of that experience.
So in order to improve the different problems that my
students face when learning I would like to set three goals
for them. It is important to state that there are plenty of
problems that students face when they are learning but I
am jus going to chose the ones that in my opinion are the
most important for them to improve.

The first one and one of the my main goals that I wish to set
for me and for my students is to develop in them the habit
of reading because I think that a large amount of students
suffer from this. A large amount of students do not know
how to read well. Of course in every class and/or school,
there are a few exceptions. I will try to implement this with
fun activities and exercises through out the course that
they would enjoy. I will also recommend to them to use a
website that can encourage them to practice their reading
skills.

The second goal is to encourage students to practice their

speaking skills more often than they do. This is a very
serious problem because many students struggle with
speaking. So I would give them a especial task that would
encourage them to speak plus a website to consult where
they could practice their speaking skills.

The third goal is to encourage students to use English on

what they most like. For instance, using Authentic
material can encourage them to use the language of
English because they feel comfortable on what they are
doing. I would give them the task that will consist on
searching a website that they like but using English. Using
authentic material would help them in their learning of
English. I would implemment this so that students can
acquire the language of English in a more proper way and
to go beyon the school’s syllabus.
