Steel Structure - Spring 2013 - Page 1 of 1

NOTE: Question No. 1 is compulsory. Attempt four questions from the rest. All questions carry equal marks.
Mobile phones and other electronic gadgets are not allowed.

1. Write short answers; (20 marks)
a) Factor of safety (FOS) takes care of what factors. Also, state Von-Mises yield criterion.
b) Describe Hot-rolled steel structural shapes & Cold-formed shapes
c) How radius of gyration is calculated from moment of inertia.
d) What do we mean by pitch and gage distances of fasteners.
e) Write conditions of compact section for a beam.

2. Select a W-section to resist a dead tensile load of 1020 kN and a service tensile live load of 680 kN
using A36 steel and AISC LRFD specification. The member is to be 9 meters long and is to be
connected through its flanges only. Assume that there can be as many as four 20mm rivets at any one
cross section (two in ach flange). Fasteners per line are at least three. (15 marks)

3. It is intended to design a W-section coulum in a building frame of 4m storey height for an axial factored
compressive load of 830 Kn. The frame is braced against sidesway along its weak axis but sidesway is
allowed along the major axis. Assume the ends of the column to be pinned at the base and fixed at the
top. (15 marks)

4. Describe about Coloumn Slenderness parameter, and also (by drawing graph) differentiate between
Short, Long and Intermediate Coloumns. Also, define effective length factor. (15 marks)

5. Design a 7m long simply supported I-section beam subjected to a service load of 5 kN/m and imposed
dead loading of 6 kN/m. The compression flange is continuously supported. (Support reaction is 55.72
kN at both ends, Maximum moment is 97.51 kN-m. Assumed self weight = 10% of superimposed dead
load). (15 marks)

6. In proportioning a plate girder with a span of 20 meters to support a factored UDL of 70 kN/m in
addition to self load and two factored concentrated loads of 750 Kn each located 7m from the roller and
hinge supports at both ends. The compression flange is laterally supported at ends and at the points of
concentrated loads. The girder is unsheltered. Determine trial size of web and flanges only. (15 marks)

7. Write detailed notes on the following: (15 marks)
a. Merits of steel construction
b. Advantages of using LRFD
c. General (Steel) Design flowchart
