Safety upgrades
EMS to improve vehicles
with FEMA grant. PAGE 2
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel resident Shayna
Simon was one of the most deco-
rated athletes at the Katz JCC
Maccabi Games in Cherry Hill
last week.
Sitting in the swimmers
warm-up area with three medals
around her neck, Simon, 13, sat
with a smile on her face, greeting
swimmer after swimmer who
came to talk to her.
Simon wasnt the fastest swim-
mer at the Maccabi Games, but
she may have been the one with
the most heart.
Simon swam in seven special
events at the Maccabi Games. The
special swimming events are non-
competitive heats for children
with special needs. Participating
children receive medals for com-
pleting the events. The special
heats give those kids a chance to
compete in the same events as the
other athletes.
Simon first learned to swim at
the JCC Camps in Medford. She
has been going to classes there for
about six years.
I learned how to do the
freestyle and the backstroke, she
said.
Shaynas mother Laura was
originally going to enroll Shayna
in the special bowling event, but
switched gears after talking to of-
ficials from the Katz JCC. Shayna
participates in the Katz JCCs
ACHAD program.
They called us up and asked if
Shayna could swim, Laura said.
Shes a very strong swimmer be-
cause she goes to the JCC Camp
out in Medford, and they were re-
ally enthusiastic and want to
push for the kids to learn how to
swim.
Shaynas desire to participate
in the Maccabi Games captured
the hearts of the Simon familys
synagogue, Adath Emanu-El. The
cost to participate in the games
was $950.
A lot of the people from the
synagogue and a lot of our
friends donated so Shayna could
attend, Laura said.
For Shayna, the experience has
been well worth the donations.
While she enjoys the swimming
and the competition, her favorite
part of the experience has been
making new friends and meeting
kids from around the world.
Making new friends took place
at home as well as during compe-
tition. The Simons participated
as a host family for the events. A
group of swimmers from Bridge-
water stayed with the family for
the week.
Shayna also made friends at
the multitude of Maccabi Games
events. She talked about meeting
athletes from the Israeli delega-
tion and having fun with kids
from Team Baltimore during
hang time. The kids invited
Shayna to take part in games
such as Guitar Hero and Dance
Dance Revolution.
I played on the guitar, it was
like I was in a rock band, Shayna
said.
The friendships Shayna made

Mt. Laurel EMS will be pur-
chasing new safety technology for
its vehicles after receiving a
$96,000 grant from the Federal
Emergency Management Agency
and the Department of Homeland
Security.
The Assistance to Firefighters
Grant helps to fund fire depart-
ments and emergency medical
services in municipalities across
the United States. Rep. Jon Run-
yan, a resident of Mt. Laurel and
member of the Congressional
Fire Services Caucus, announced
the grant last week.
Mt. Laurel is using the money
to make safety and communica-
tion improvements to its existing
fleet of vehicles, according to
township manager Maureen
Mitchell.
Our project is to upgrade our
entire fleet to the latest in new
fleet safety technology, she said.
The township is purchasing
the Zoll Roadsafety RS 4000 Drive
System to add to the vehicles. The
safety system includes four cam-
eras, data reporting, vehicle diag-
nostics and integration with
other systems and technology al-
ready installed on the vehicles.
Mitchell said the safety of resi-
dents as well the township's re-
sponders was the first priority
when there were discussions on
how to use the money.
We are committed to continu-
ously improving our EMS fleet
operations safety record to pro-
tect both our responders and the
public, Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the new technolo-
gy system exceeds all National
Fire Protection Association and
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration standards.
This is not the first time Mt.
Laurel has received an Assis-
tance to Firefighters Grant. Last
year, Mt. Laurel Fire District No.
1 also received grants for protec-
tive equipment. The district re-
ceived $41,400 last year and a
$274,500 grant in 2010. The district
applies for the grant on an annual
basis.
FEMA issues numerous Assis-
tance to Firefighters Grants to
municipalities over the course of
the year. An estimated $288.8 mil-
lion in grants have been awarded
so far in the 2013 fiscal year.

Senatorial races will
determine political future
While your recent editorial empha-
sized the importance of local elections
and voting in general, it failed to inform
on the significance of this years Senato-
rial races.
Both Democrats and Republicans have
much to lose or gain, as whoever wins the
Senate will determine the course of our
political future.
Not only are Republicans poised to
capture the Senate, their success could
both strike a note of disapproval with
current policies and set the tone for the
next presidential election.
This election may be even more vital
then usual as President Obama has
pressed his executive authority to the
point some suggest even our
constitutional assurances are in ques-
tion.
No doubt and for good reason, many
New Jersey voters assume both Democ-
rat senators will hold their seats. Still,
others who are concerned about govern-
ment overreach and incompetence
should make a show of their concerns by
voting.

W
ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our sec-
ond Back to School special section,
which is included inside this issue.
Next week, well have more compre-
hensive back to school coverage, in-
cluding a Q&A with the superintend-
ent of the school district to keep you
informed of all the changes and excite-
ment on the horizon for the 2014-2015
school year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity. Recently, we created an On
Campus section of our paper to do
just that to recognize the hard-work-
ing students in a way that stands out
from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

Countryside Elementary
School in Mt. Laurel is among the
top state collectors of cereal bags
in the Mom Brands Cereal Bag
Brigade, a free, national recycling
program created by a partnership
between MOM Brands and Terra-
Cycle. By collecting waste from
its MOM Brands cereal packag-
ing, the school has helped to di-
vert 5,101 units of cereal bag
waste from landfills.
After they sign up to join a re-
cycling brigade, schools earn
points for every unit of waste
they collect and send to TerraCy-
cle. The points can be redeemed
for charitable gifts or a cash dona-
tion to the non-profit or school of
the collectors choice. TerraCycle
recycles the traditionally non-re-
cyclable cereal bag waste into
new products and materials.
