Intel Xeon Processor
Introduction:
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN FRANCISCO, September 10, 2013 Intel Corporation
today introduced the Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 v2 product family (code named "Ivy
Bridge-EP"), an industry-leading set of versatile processors that promises to redefine the
server, storage and networking infrastructure found in data enters. With greater efficiency and
flexibility, these processors will enable the rapid delivery of services for high performance
computing, cloud and enterprise segments, and offer compelling new opportunities for
telecommunications vendors.

The new Xeon product family is based on Intel's leading 22-nanometer process technology,
contributing to dramatic energy efficiency improvements of up to 45
1
percent when compared
to the previous generation. The processor family also features up to 12 cores and delivers up
to 50 percent more performance
2
across variety of compute intensive workloads.

"More than ever, organizations are looking to information technology to transform their
businesses," said Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Data enter
and Connected Systems Group at Intel. "Offering new cloud-based services require an
infrastructure that is versatile enough to support the diverse workloads and is flexible enough
to respond to changes in resource demand across servers, storage and network."

Much of the infrastructure today is not architected to support the growth in IT services. Data
canter management is often manual and static. To enable on-demand, automated services, the
next generation of data centres will need to evolve to a "software defined infrastructure"
where many of the functions are managed in software. The new Intel Xeon processors
provide a common, software compatible processing foundation and possess the features and
tools to help transform data centres for the future.

Xenon Processor Families:
The Intel xenon processor consists of three families those are:
1. E5-1600 v2 product family
2. E5-2600 v2 product family
3. E5-4600 v2 product family

The Intel xenon processor E5-1600/E5-2600/E5-4600 v2 product families are the
Next generation of 64-bit, multi-core enterprise processors built on 22-nanometer
Process technology.
This generation of processor introduces the High-Core count (HCC), Mid-Core count
(MCC), and Low-Core count (LCC) die size terminology to the SKU models. These
processors summarize the die size associated with the processor TDP, Model Number, and
Core Count. Based on that The Intel xenon processor processor E5-1600/E5-2600/E5-4600
v2 product families support these segments.

The Intel xenon processor processor E5-1600 v2 product family is designed for single
Processor Workstation platforms only.

The Intel xenon processor processor E5-2600 v2 product family is designed for dual
Processor Workstation, Efficient Performance server and HPC platforms.

The Intel xenon processor processor E5-4600 v2 product family processor supports
Scalable server and HPC platforms of two or more processors, including glue less
4-way platforms.

These processors feature per socket, two Intel Quick Path Interconnect point-to-points
Links capable of up to 8.0 GT/s, up to 40 lanes of PCI Express* 3.0 links capable of 8.0
GT/s, and 4 lanes of DMI2/PCI Express* 2.0 interface with a peak transfer rate of 5.0 GT/s.
The processor supports up to 46 bits of physical address space and 48-bit of Virtual address
space.

Included in this family of processors is an integrated memory controller (IMC) and
Integrated I/O (IIO) (such as PCI Express* and DMI2) on a single silicon die. This single Die
solution is known as a monolithic processor.

Scope of Processor:
Advantages:
1. New, Powerful Engine for Agile, Efficient Datacenter:
The Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family is Intel's most versatile
processing technology and can address many of the constraints data canters face
today.

It allows the industry to innovate and build solutions for a wide variety of data
canter workloads to meet diverse customer needs.

The Intel Xeon processors E5-2600 v2 product family will power the new IBM Next
Scale System, a high-density, flexible computing platform designed for high-
demand workloads such as analytics, technical computing and cloud delivery.

Intel's newest processor family also will be used in IBM's new x3650 M4 HD high-
density storage server, ideal for managing big data and business-critical workloads,
as well as all of IBM's two-socket systems including System x racks and towers, Flex
System, iDataPlex, and Blade Canter offerings.
2. Re-defining Networking, Storage:
Data traffic generated by connected mobile devices and the associated services is
expected to have a 66 percent compound annual growth rate over the next four
years. This puts additional pressure on networking infrastructure to be more agile and
efficient to allow for much faster provisioning of services.

Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family accelerates efficient processing of
network workloads commonly handled by expensive and proprietary offload engines
and accelerators found in networking appliances.

Using Intel's Open Network Platform (ONP) server reference design, customers can
use high-volume Xeon-based servers combined with industry open standards to
consolidate virtualized networking applications.

This allows them to deliver market leading throughput performance and latency
for Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV)
workloads.

The Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family is also designed to power cost
efficient scale-out, distributed, and software defined storage. From 2012 to 2020 the
amount of stored data will double every two years
5
, reaching 40ZB.

Fast, on-demand access to this amount of data for tasks such as big data analytics
require more intelligent compute and storage intensive solutions, as well as a
dramatic decrease in the cost-per-stored terabyte.
3. Extensive Industry Support:

Starting today, system manufacturers from around the world are expected to announce
hundreds of Intel Xeon processor E5 family-based platforms. These
manufacturers include Acer*, Apple*, Asus*, Bull*, Cray* Cisco*, Dell*, Fujitsu*,
HP*, Hitachi*, Huawei*, IBM*, Inspur*, Lenovo*, NEC*, Oracle*, Quanta*, SGI*,
Sugon*, Super micro*, TYAN*, Welwyn* and Unisys*.

4. Pricing and Availability

The Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family will be offered with 18 different parts
which range in price from $202 to $2,614 in quantities of 1,000. Additionally three
single-socket Intel Xeon processor E5-1600 parts will be offered for workstations
which range in price from $294 to $1080.

Disadvantages:
Poorly threaded applications in E5-2600 v2 product are not efficient product.
Low core count, lesser memory speeds in E5-2600 V2 product family. it results the
less clock speed. So this speed should be increase.
Lesser clock speed in available cost and less memory and also cost is not at lower
level for these specs. To achieve this Intel introduce the new technology march
4
th
,2014
Given the increased core counts & higher memory speeds, lower-end Xeon E5-4600
v2 processors may replace older Xeon E5-4600 processors with improved aggregate
performance.
Comparisons:
Xeon E5-4610 v2 delivers additional value over Xeon E5-4610: the new CPU has
33% more cores and faster memory at the same cost, but also a slower clock speed
(a disadvantage only for poorly-threaded applications)
Xeon E5-4620 transitions to Xeon E5-4610 v2: same core count, but a faster clock
speed and faster memory at a lower cost
Xeon E5-4640 v2 delivers additional value over E5-4640: 25% more cores and
faster memory at the same cost, but also a slower clock speed (a disadvantage only
for poorly-threaded applications)
Xeon E5-4650 transitions to Xeon E5-4627 v2: Same physical core count, but faster
memory and clock speed at a much lower price point. Caveats include a slower QPI
speed and no hyper threading, the latter of which is of lesser importance to HPC.
Intels strategy with these CPUs makes sense, since four-socket systems tend to run software
that takes advantage of higher core count more than higher clock speed. Sacrificing 100MHz
or 200MHz for two extra cores is almost always going to be a very favourable exchange.
Conclusion:
With an increase in core count, clock speed and memory speed, HPC applications will
achieve better performance on these new Xeons. Depending on the choice of SKU, users
should expect to see 10% to 30% performance improvement for floating-point
applications (model-to-model) without spending more. Even greater speedups are possible by
upgrading to the new 12-core Xeon E5-4657L v2:
Xeon E5-4620 transition to Xeon E5-4657L v2: 63% performance improvement
Xeon E5-4640 transition to Xeon E5-4657L v2: 50% performance improvement
Xeon E5-4650 transition to Xeon E5-4657L v2: 33% performance improvement
