St Henrys

Marist College
A LOVE FOR SPORT
From the early days when the sports calendar offered
just rugby, cricket and swimming, the range of sports
codes has widened signifcantly. Both individual and
team sports provide opportunities to develop personal
and concerted group abilities. With girls becoming
a vital part of the College community almost two
decades ago, the face of sport at St Henrys has
altered considerably. Teams of the fairer sex take to
the courts, pitches and felds with fair and skill and are
achieving high levels of success.
Over the decades, a signifcant number of present
pupils and alumni have taken the skills learnt on the
playing felds of the College to competition in wider
arenas and have earned their provincial and national
colours. There have been past St Henrys pupils who
have celebrated their expertise at the highest levels
like the Olympic Games.
The gentlemen of St Henrys have a good number of
sports from which to choose: Cricket, Rugby, Water
Polo, Swimming, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Athletics, Cross
Country, Hockey, Surfng and Softball and the girls
fare just as well with Hockey (both Indoor and Field),
Netball and Action Netball, Tennis, Soccer, Water Polo,
Swimming, Cross Country, Golf, Surfng and Athletics.
St Henrys is renowned for its etiquette and competitive
spirit in all these disciplines.
ATHLETICS
Athletics is undertaken in the third term
each year. Pupils from across the campus
practice and compete in heats which build
up to the Colleges inter-house Sports Day.
Here the camaraderie and joy of inter-house
competition comes to the fore as our boys
and girls battle it out in both track and feld
events.
CROSS-COUNTRY
This is a competitive sport which attracts
large numbers of enthusiastic boys
and girls who have the opportunity to
compete against other schools in Term
Two. This activity develops stamina and
raises levels of general ftness. Cross-
country is also used to supplement the
pupils training for other team sports.
CRICKET
Cricket has always been an important
activity at the College. This sport is
played in the frst and fourth terms.
Practices are twice a week and
matches are usually played on
Saturdays. The College felds teams
from the mini-cricket sides in the
Foundation Phase through to the
open age group sides in the High
School.
HOCKEY
The College felds teams in both girlsindoor and outdoor hockey. Indoor
hockey is played in Term One by the High School and outdoor hockey in
Term Two by the High School. Outdoor hockey takes place in Term Three
for girls in the Preparatory School. Outdoor hockey is considered as one
of the main College sports for girls. Practices take place twice a week
and games are played on Saturdays. All of our players have shown
great skills development over the season.
Boys hockey is relatively new to St Henrys and is offered to the High
School in Term Two and to the Preparatory School pupils in Term Three.
GOLF
Accredited professional coaches guide an enthusiastic group of young
golfers in this sport. Practices are twice a week and an inter-schools league
takes place where our pupils have the opportunity to interact with golfers
from other schools.
NETBALL
This Term Two sport is practiced twice
a week and matches are played on a
week day with tournaments played on
a Saturday. Girls have the opportunity
to attend the District and Provincial
Trials. The College is part of the Durban
Central Ward in Netball. Action Netball
is also played in the High School in Term
Three. This sport is played at the Durban
North Action Arena.
RUGBY
This sport is played in Term Two. Rugby has a long history at St Henrys.
The College is part of the KZN schools league and plays against
schools of similar size where possible. Rugby is played from the Junior
Preparatory Phase through to the Open Age Groups. The 1st team is
nicknamed the Blue Train after its distinctive blue jerseys.
SOCCER
This sport is played in Term Three by
the High School. The College is part
of the KZN Schools Softball League
and felds two boys teams (u19 and
u15) and one girls team. Teams play
in both the A and B leagues and
practice on Wednesday afternoons.
Matches are held on Friday and/or
Saturday afternoons. The College is
fortunate to have excellent top level
coaching for the players.
SURFING
Surfng is offered to both Preparatory School and High School Phases.
St Henrys forms part of the KwaZulu Natal inter-schools League. Pupils
wanting to learn to surf are also accommodated. Practices take place
on Friday afternoons and fxtures occur in the second term on Fridays.
SWIMMING
This popular summer sport is held
in Terms One and Four. Pupils
have squad training twice a week
and galas are usually held on
Wednesday afternoons. Over the
past number of years, there has
been a signifcant improvement
in all ages across all strokes in
competitions. We have steadily
improved our placement at the
Durban and District galas in both
the Preparatory School and High
School in recent years and much
is expected from our College
Swimming Squad in the future.
Our pupils have the opportunity to
join the Trident Swimming Academy,
which operates from the College
property, to further their swim strokes
and skills. The Academy is run by Mr
Eugene Hulley, the Colleges head
swimming coach.
TENNIS
We enjoy the services of a professional tennis coach who
develops all aspects of this wonderful game. Social tennis
players are also accommodated. The College is highly
competitive in this sport.
WATER POLO
This sport is offered at both Preparatory School and
High School levels in terms one and four. Boys and
girls thoroughly enjoy this vibrant activity and the
sport has grown from strength to strength in recent
years. Practices and games take place during
the week in terms one and four. The water polo
fraternity often plays over 50 matches a year.
