The Maili Christian Church(formerly Maili Church of Christ) was started by Misses
Edith Shimmel and Ethel Jones in 1950. They came to Hawaii after being incarserated
in the Philippines during World War II. They worked with the Stills when they first
came to Hawaii.
Joseph and Dora Sholtis came to the work with the Maili Church of Christ, now the
Maili Christian Church, in 1964. Joe was bom in North Braddock, Pennsylvania and
was a member of the First Christian Church of Braddock, Pennsylvania. He is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph (Alice) W. Sholtis of North Braddock, Pennsylvania(Joe's
mother passed away in December of 1983).
The church was Joe's life mother kept he and his brother very much involved in the
Work of the Lord. Both sons attended Christian service camp and High School Confer
ences. Living in an area of the Campbell's and other great preachers it was at a
High School Conference at Bethany College in West Virgina that Joe gave his life to
Christ for the Christian Ministry. Upon graduation from Turtle Creek High School
in 1959 he entered Kentucky Christian College graduating in May of 1964. It was at
Kentucky Christian College that Joe met Miss Dora Hee from Nanakuli, Hawaii.
Dora K. M.(Hee) Sholtis is a native of Hawaii and is of Chinese ancestry; both of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs William Y. Y. and Ah Lung (Wong) Hee are now deceased(mother
passed away in 1978 and father in 1985), she has one sister Alice Winters \dio is re
siding in California.
Dora attended the Maili Church of Christ in 1950 \dien the work started under the
direction of Miss Edith Shimmel and Miss Ethel Jones, missionaries from the Philippines.
She accepted the Lord in August of 1957, and shortly after becaning a Christian be
gan teaching Sunday School and participating in other church related programs.
Falling graduation from Waipahu High School in 1958, she attended Kentucky Christian
College, graduating in 1962. This is vAiere she met Joe(in 1959) and they were marr
ied in June of 1962.
They have three lovely children, Stephen Edward(20yrs. old), graduated from Mid-Paci
fic Institute of Honolulu, and is now married to Edean Kahue and are proud parents
of a darling little girl Bridgette. John Earl is 16 yrs. old and a junior at
Lanakili Baptist High School and Eleanor Kehaulani is 7yrs. old and a second grader
at Hawaii Baptist Academy.
Due to the fact that we are not receiving adequate financial help as missionaries,
Dora has had to find a full-time job outside of the Church. Since their arrival in
Hawaii. . .she worked for Waianae Cleaners for about 7 yrs. and not long after the
birth of their last child, became enployed part-time with Burger King as a Conmunity
Relations Representative in 1980, In 1981, she went into Assistant Management and
after 2yrs. became Restaurant Manager for the Burger King in Waianae. Both Stephen
and Edean are also Assistant Managers for Burger King in two other restaurants on
Oahu.
At present our missionary support is around $150.00 a month. This does not give us
enough to pay even the necessary bills for living. If it were not for the outside
work that Dora has been able to get we could not make it finacially. Because of this
we have not been able to devote full time to the work and the work has suffered.
We are hoping that many of you will help us to reach our goal of $1000.00 a month
living-link support so that the Maili Christian Church can once again be an effective
witness for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
