FUEL PUMP TIMING TIPS

These are various tips to take into consideration when setting the timing on the
fue pumps that !ou wi not find in the Lister Petter Service Manua" Use the manua as
!our guide with these tips as additiona hep"
#$ Locating top dead center$

!ou are on the stroke where ,oth rockers are not moving"
-$ &emove fue in.ector and insert #*/inch piece of straight wire 0coat hanger
works1 into the in.ector port" Sow! turn crank 0do not pinch wire1 unti wire reaches its
highest position"
'$ Use a pocket mirror to ook into inspection hoe for f!whee to ocate timing
marks on the f!whee" % fashight is hepfu" -e sure !our mirror is s2uare to the
f!whee and count !ou marks" Standard setting is *3 degrees -T4'" $ for standard
appication" 5igh atitude re2uires more in advance timing -T4'" Mark timing marks
with whiteout" This is usefu as the f!whee has two timing marks) one for each c!inder"
6nce the timing mark is marked for c!inder (# do not mark the timing mark for c!inder

%$ Loosen the governor fue ad.ustment ,ot ,! * compete turns" This wi aid in
the remova and instaation of the pumps ,! aowing more movement for the governor
arm"
7$ Shims

9eep shims with each individua pump" 'arefu! pee the shims apart :the! are known
to stick to each other" 'ount the tota num,er of shims" &emoving "337 /"33+ advances
the timing ,! # degree" 4o not count the shim that is ocated ,etween the fat ocking
pate and the in.ection pump"
+$ If for some reason the shims get mi;ed or mispaced$
Use depth mic to take measurement per the manua" -e sure that the surface where the
in.ection pump mounts is fat" Sometimes there is paint ,uidup" -e sure that the depth
mic is sitting so as not to ,e resting on the edge of the push rod tu,e sea"
8$ &einstaing the in.ection pump$
%$ Turn pin on pump a the wa! to the eft" 5od the ocking pate up against the
pump ,od!"
-$ The pin goes into a sot on the governor rack" <ou have to put the pin in this
sot or damage can resut" It is hepfu to move the governor arm so that it is against the
fue ad.ustment ,ot whie doing this" %fter !ou have inserted the pump and !ou fee that
the pin is in the sot of the governor rack move the governor arm ,ack and forth) it shoud
,e free and !ou shoud see some ,ack and forth movement of the in.ection pump" It is
ver! eas! to insta the pump and have the pin to the right or eft of the sot in the
governor rack"
If !ou are not confident that !ou have the pin in the sot) a fai safe wa! to check is ,!
removing the timing gear cover and shining a ight into the governor rack"
'$ %fter !ou are confident that the pin is in the rack rotate the crank the opposite
direction so that the cam o,e is dropping and aowing the fue pump to drop"
=$ Insta the hod down arm" For c!inder ( # ad.ust the fue inet tu,e on the in.ection
pump so that it is sight! eft of center of the distance ,etween the outside of vertica
portion of the hod down arm and the push rod tu,e"
For c!inder (* ad.ust the fue inet tu,e on the in.ection pump so that it is as cose to the
push rod tu,e as !ou can get and sti insta the fue hose"
