August /September Orientation Students will build confidence and comfort level through games and exercises. They will be introduced to some Drama terms and begin using their imagination more. They will be become familiar with classroom routines and expectations (Splat, Heads Up Dude, Lying Mimes, Honey I love You, Hunter and Hunted. Blind Walk, Trust, relaxation exercises) September Movement- Students will learn how to communicate using their bodies through movement, pantomime some mime and tableau. Puppet and Master,Group Choreography, Class Assignments in Pantomime and Family Album. October/November Speech- In this unit we will learn some terms for the vocal tract and how to project our voices more effectively. Class Assignments will include performance of poetry, tongue twisters, limericks, readers theatre, and gibberish. They will use Puppets and perform a Puppet Show for the class using an existing script. We will learn about monologues and learn how to prepare one. * First monologue will be due at the end of the October.
December Improv and Scriptwriting - We will learn how to use Improv effectively and how to create a scene without planning. In groups, Students will choose a childrens story and write a script for it. January/February Acting Skills We will learn about blocking and techniques for focus and entrances exits etc. Students will learn about stage business and how to create a scene behind a scene. They will rehearse and perform the scripts they wrote. *second monologue is due at the end of the February. March/April Building a Character- Students will learn how to create a character and all about motivation and believability. They will create a character from scratch with a personal history and personality and will have the opportunity to include their character in a scene with other students. May/ June The Collective Students will use a variety of performing arts to create a Theme Collective. This will include monologue, dance, singing, comedy, mime, juggling and tricks, short scenes, spoken word. They will work in groups of no less than 4 and present their final product on the stage.*third monologue due near end of May.
Overall Evaluation of Drama Students will be evaluated based on: class assignments 30%, Group work and contribution 30%, Monologues and Individual Acting skills 30%, Final Quiz on terms and concepts 10% Attitude Because drama class is an active class which requires participation by the group, attitude is very important. The drama classroom needs to be a safe place where all students feel comfortable contributing to discussion, working together, and performing. You will be required to work with students who are not your friends, you may also be required to work with members of the opposite sex. If at any point any student makes another student uncomfortable, that student will be asked to leave the activity and will receive a zero.
*Students will need a duotang as well as pencils and pens for class. Girls will be required to wear shorts under their kilts as various activities require floor work.
