meditation #2
LENTEN HOPE
PERILS AND PROMISES
“GIVING LEGS TO OUR HOPE”
H
ope is not empty optimism. Hope
during the Lenten season is not a bland
assurance that everything will go well
for us. How could it be, when we know that Lent
includes the loss and grief of Good Friday? This is
one of the great challenges of faith. If we have a
loving, caring God, how can anything bad happen?
It is perilous to rely upon unrealistic hope. If
a hurricane or tsunami is going to hit our area,
we cannot expect God to rescue us just in time.
Faithful people suffer along with everyone else.
We might long for an all-protecting God, but that
is not what Scripture presents to us. Our hope is
found in God’s assurance that, “Whatever may
happen, I will be with you.”
Like a parent, God helps us to cope with losses and
to learn from them. Toddlers, while learning to walk,
often fall. Without a parent nearby to comfort them
and help them try again, they might simply cry and
give up. God comes to help us recover and learn.
Life is filled with problems and challenges, but it
is also filled with hope. After the mythical Pandora
opened her box and released troubles and sufferings
into the world, she was close to despair, but another
voice came from the box, seeking release. The voice
of hope is now with us whatever life may bring.
Hope is around us and within us, but we need
to put it to work. When things go wrong, realize
that there are still possibilities. Accept the help,
the lifting-up that God gives us. With God’s
strengthening, our own legs, our own strength will
support us. Have the courage to look up with hope
and depend upon the hope-restoring God.

W
e mark this day as a special moment in history. Preacher, scholar, pastor, teacher, father,
husband, mentor, friend, sage, servant and son will stand before the people of Trinity
one final time as Senior Pastor. For thirty-six years, Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. has stood
behind this sacred desk proclaiming a “full gospel,” a gospel full of hope, healing, faith and liberating
love.
While other ministers and ministries have allowed the winds of the current culture and market to
reshape the gospel into formulaic catch phrases and false hopes of financial success, Dr. Wright, you
have etched out a unique homiletic of recovery and redemption. It was Howard Thurman, mentor
of Dr. King and Rev. Albert Cleage, who stated, “Our encounter with God is not about head or
heart, but about bringing the head and heart together before the Divine.” Pastor Wright, you have
demonstrated this principal by integrating all of your gifts into your ministry.
On behalf of Trinity United Church of Christ, we thank you for allowing God to pour God’s
anointing and power into your life. Thank you for being so generous to your spiritual family and
letting the overflow spill into our lives. We thank you for your prophetic preaching in an age of
preaching for profit. Thank you for loving Trinity, loving your family, but most of all loving God.
May the road rise to meet you, my friend. May the wind be at your back as you step into new
territory. May the sunlight of Christ always grace your cheek, and may God’s rain always fall gently
upon your field. May God keep you, Pastor Wright, in the palm of God’s Hand.

the results of a Redeemed LifE
“Wouldn’t Be” Millionaire

Eleanor Boyer was a retired buyer of chemicals and office supplies when she won
a lump sum of $11.8 million in the New Jersey lottery. She never had a moment’s
doubt about what to do with the money.

She gave it away; about half of it to the parish she worshiped in all her life, and the
rest to the town rescue squad (erasing its deficit), the volunteer fire department and
some of the other groups that serve the town where she grew up.

“No new car, no vacation,” she said. “My life is no different. I’ve given it up to
God. I live in God’s presence and do God’s Will, and I did that from the start.” “In
an age when people are so driven by material forces,” said the vice president of the
New Jersey Hospital Association, “the idea of somebody turning over all that sum of
money to the community and to the church is inspiring. It kind of makes you step
back and think what your priorities are.”

Rev. J. Kennedy, pastor of Ms. Boyer’s church, said the church had invested some of
her gift as an endowment and was buying a new pipe organ. “I suggested to Eleanor
that the organ could be from her, in memory of her parents, and she went along with
that,” he said. He said he did not know if she had purchased another car to replace
the 1968 Chevrolet Malibu when she hit the jackpot. But if she did, he said, she
probably bought a used one.

Ms. Boyer, who was never married and whose closest living relatives are three
nephews, said the church is her true home. She taught classes there, worked at the
church office for ten years, and helped count the collection money.

R
ecently, The Chicago Reporter published
its findings based on over three years of
research in the mortgage lending
industry, with regard to the Chicago
Metropolitan Area. The study revealed that
Chicago led the nation in sub-prime high cost
loans from 2004–2006.
Sub-prime high cost loans are essentially
offered at low rates with balloon payments at
a later date, which lull the borrower to sleep
with the offer of low payments. Mortgage
lending outfits fail to fully explain to or educate
the borrower that the payments will increase
significantly at an appointed period in the
life of the loan. As a result, people are able to
purchase homes, but are unable to keep them.
Foreclosure is the natural result.
What is interesting about the foreclosure
rate in Chicago is that African Americans are
three times as likely as Whites and Asians to
get high cost loans, and Latinos are twice as
likely. Further, the study showed that Blacks
with six-figure incomes were more likely to
obtain high cost loans than Whites, Asians and
Latinos earning less than $35,000 per year.
These statistics support the notion that Blacks
are being targeted for economic slavery by
lenders who care only about making loans that
enslave consumers. In no uncertain terms, this is
predatory lending!

According to the study, the banks which are
providing the most high cost loans with regard to
African Americans and Latinos are Countrywide
Financial Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co.
Armed with this study and other facts which
indicate that predatory lending is targeted at our
people, the Housing Ministry of Trinity United
Church of Christ is attempting to stem the tide
of foreclosures and assist those who may already
be in foreclosure, by offering educational
forums. On Saturday February 16, 2008, from
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., TUCC Village Center,
1947 W. 95th Street, the Housing Ministry will
host a FREE seminar entitled “How to Avoid
Foreclosure.” The focus of this seminar is to
educate the congregation and community on
available options, should they be faced with
foreclosure. Representatives from the Illinois
Attorney General’s office, City Treasurer’s
office, City of Chicago Dept. of Housing, and
counseling agencies will be available.

POSTER/ESSAY CONTEST DETAILS:

Contestants will submit a finished piece, along with a typewritten one-page essay on
“Winds of Change: Comparing Rev. Wright’s/Rev. Moss’ Transition to the Change of Seasons”

• Dimensions: Must use Poster Board, 20” x 30” (please leave a 1” border around the edges)
• Medium used: Final piece can be done in pencil/color pencil, pen and ink, marker or paint
• Due Date: Final pieces must be submitted to the TUCC Mailroom by Saturday, February 16, 2008
• Age Limit: Open to children ages 8–16
• Prizes: All participants will receive prizes for participation. We will award a special prize to the
