wouldinvolveseparatingthelecturefromthelabandgivingthelabcoursea
separatecoursenumber,APDM321L.APDM321Lwillbea1creditlabcourse
andbeacorequisitecoursetoAPDM321.ApprovaloftheDYrequirementis
beingrequestedforAPDM321L.APDM321willthenbea3creditlecture
coursethatfulfillstheDPrequirement.
2. Whyisthiscoursebeingrequestedormodified?
Theglobalworldoftextilesisbecomingsocomplexandtechnologydriven thatit
isdifficulttoadequately coverenoughmaterial inacombinedlecture/lab course.
SeparatingAPDM321intotwocourses, onelecturecourseand onelabcourse,
willallowthestudentsmoretimeinlecturetobeintroducedtodifferenttextiles
andmoretimeinthelaboratorytogethandsonexperienceworkingwithindustry
equipmentandperformingtextileteststhatarebeingusedinthetextileindustry.

Thelectureclasswillbeorganizedthesameasbeforebutwiththeaddedweekly
lecturetherewillbemoretimetogointogreaterdetail aboutdifferenttextile
properties.Thelaboratory coursewillstresslaboratoryresearchmethodology.

APDM320istheprerequisitethatmustbetakenpriortoAPDM321.APDM
321fulfillsoneupperdivision theDPrequirement. APDM321Lwillfulfillthe
DYrequirement.

waywillthelattermakeadistinctcontribution?
APDM320,TextilesI,istheonly othercourseatUHMthatcoverstheareaof
textilescienceanditsapplications.TextilesI,however,doesnotincludea
laboratorysection. APDM321Lwillallowstudentshandsonopportunity
workingwithindustryequipmentperformingtestswhicharetakingplaceinthe
textilesindustry. Studentswilllearntoidentifyfibersandfabricsandtheir
physicalpropertiesandwilllearntoresolveconsumerproblemsrelatingtotextile
use. Thisnewlevelofknowledgeisneededbystudentsinadvancedapparel
constructionanddesign,andbystudentsinadvancedapparelproduct
merchandisingcourses.

321L.ThePrerequisiteforboththelectureandlabcoursesisAPDM320,
TextilesI. Studentswillneedtohaveabasicknowledgeoftheterminologyand
conceptswithinthefieldofappareldesignandmerchandising.Theyneedto
understandtheprocessthatbeginswiththetextilefiberbecausefibersandfabrics
influencedesignandproduction,sourcing,andmerchandisingofthefinished
product.APDM321andAPDM321Larecorequisitessotheymustbetaken
duringthesamesemester. APDM321willfulfill oneupperdivisionwriting
intensiverequirementaswellastheDPrequirement. Approvalisbeingrequested
forAPDM321LtomeettheDYrequirement.
