2)ACTIVITIES OF THE ORGANIZATION
,part rom power generation, w"ic" is t"e mainstay o t"e company, NTPC "as already ventured
into consultancy, power trading, as" utilisation and coal mining.
T"e total installed capacity o t"e company is %(, -.. /+ 0including 12s3 wit" 15 coal #ased
and 7 gas #ased stations, located across t"e country. In addition under 12s, % stations are coal
#ased 4 anot"er station uses napt"a56N* as uel. 7y '(17, t"e power generation portolio is
e8pected to "ave a diversiied uel mi8 wit" coal #ased capacity o around 5%((( /+, 1((((
/+ t"roug" gas, 9((( /+ t"roug" 9ydro generation, a#out '((( /+ rom nuclear sources
and around 1((( /+ rom :enewa#le ;nergy <ources 0:;<3. NTPC "as adopted a multi=
pronged growt" strategy w"ic" includes capacity addition t"roug" green ield pro!ects,
e8pansion o e8isting stations, !oint ventures, su#sidiaries and ta$eover o stations.

issue and 5.'5? as oer or sale #y *overnment o India. NTPC t"us #ecame a listed company
in Novem#er '((. wit" t"e government "olding >9.5? o t"e eAuity s"are capital. T"e rest is
"eld #y Institutional Investors and t"e Pu#lic. T"e issue was a resounding success. NTPC is
among t"e largest ive companies in India in terms o mar$et capitaliBation
DIVERSIFIED GROWTH
NTPCs Auest or diversiication started a#out a decade #ac$ wit" its oray into 9ydro Power. It
"as, since t"en, #een moving towards #ecoming a "ig"ly diversiied company t"roug" #ac$ward,
orward and lateral integration. T"e company is well on its way to #ecoming &an Integrated
Power /a!or, "aving entered 9ydro Power, Coal /ining, Power Trading, ;Auipment
/anuacturing and Power Cistri#ution. NTPC "as made long strides in developing its ,s"
Dtilisation #usiness. In its pursuit o diversiication, NTPC "as also developed strategic alliances
and !oint ventures wit" leading national and international companies.
Hydro o!er" In order to give impetus to "ydro power growt" in t"e country and to
"ave a #alanced portolio o power generation, NTPC entered "ydro power #usiness wit"
t"e >(( /+ Eoldam "ydro pro!ect in 9imac"al Prades". Two more pro!ects "ave also
#een ta$en up in Dttara$"and. , w"olly owned su#sidiary, NTPC 9ydro 6td., is setting
up "ydro pro!ects o capacities up to '5( /+.
Coal Minin#" In a ma!or #ac$ward integration move to create uel security, NTPC "as
ventured into coal mining #usiness wit" an aim to meet a#out '(? o its coal reAuirement
rom its captive mines #y '(17. T"e *overnment o India "as so ar allotted 7 coal #loc$s
to NTPC, including ' #loc$s to #e developed t"roug" !oint venture route. Coal
Production is li$ely to start in '((9=1(.
o!er Tradin#" FNTPC 2idyut 2yapar Nigam 6td.F 0N22N3, a w"olly owned su#sidiary
was created or trading power leading to optimal utiliBation o NTPCs assets. It is t"e
second largest power trading company in t"e country. In order to acilitate power trading
in t"e country, &National Power ;8c"ange 6td., a 12 #etween NTPC, N9PC, P)C and
TC< "as #een ormed or operating a Power ;8c"ange.
As$ Business" NTPC "as ocused on t"e utiliBation o as" generated #y its power stations
to convert t"e c"allenge o as" disposal into an opportunity. ,s" is #eing used as a raw
material input or cement companies and #ric$ manuacturers. N22N is engaged in t"e
#usiness o )ly ,s" e8port and sale to domestic customers. 1oint ventures wit" cement
companies are #eing planned to set up cement grinding units in t"e vicinity o NTPC
stations.

su#sidiary o NTPC, was set up or distri#ution o power. N;<C6 is actively engaged in

wor$ing as F,dvisor cum ConsultantF or /inistry o Power or implementation o

T"e IT Cepartment at NTPC is organiBed into two sections. )irst is t"e <ervices and second is
t"e :4C Cepartment. IT departments usually involve t"emselves in maintenance o networ$s
wit"in t"e company, networ$ security, managing and procuring sotware and allotting IP
addresses.
