C. unction of the cranial nerves
2rite the name of the cranial nerve for the function described.
____________ 1. A motor nerve to the tongue for speech and s3allo3ing
________________ 2. A motor nerve to move the lateral rectus eye muscle
________________ #. Receives sensory information from the nose

information to muscles of mastication.

information and acts in s3allo3ing
____________ 1(. Receives sensory information from and transmits motor information to
the visceral organs

E. Testing cranial nerve function
Using the materials at each station, test your partners CFNs and name the Roman
numeral(s) of the cranial nerve(s) being tested.
1. __________ Have subject say Ah. Check uvula position with mouth open (midline is N).
Using a cotton-tipped applicator, gently touch the subjects uvula to elicit a gag
reflex (N response)
The posterior 1/3 of tongue can be tested with cotton applicator dipped in quinine
2. ___________ Read a Snellen eye chart at 20ft.
3. __________ Ask subject to stick out and retract his tongue (tongue deviation to one side is abN)
4. ________ _ Observe eyelids (drooping is abN)
Look up, down, medially, laterally, upper lateral, lower lateral
Shine penlight on pupils (constriction normal)
5. ___________ Have subject smile, raise eyebrows, whistle, and close the eyes
Check tip of tongue for taste with sugar
6. ___________ Have subject shrug shoulders against resistance as you are holding them down
(both sides should be equal in strength)
7. ___________ Lightly touch the cornea of the subject with a wisp of cotton (blinking normal)
Subject bites down on tongue depressor; try to pull it out; (no resistance to pulling
is abN)
8. ___________ Sniff aromatic oil, spice, or coffee grounds
9. __________ Use a tuning fork to check hearing in each ear
Have the subject stand straight with eyes closed (substantial swaying abN)
