Journal of Sustainable Development in Agriculture and Environment 3(2):pp.128-137. Paper Review: Everybody knows that water is important to life, without it life cannot go on. It was noted that human, plant and animal lives on the planet is dependent on water. Due to intimate relationship between water and life, water can be said to be woven into fabric of all cultures and religious societies in myriad ways. Water on the earth is to be said of enormous in quality when it is considered that more two-thirds of the earth surface is covered by water. United nation environmental protection (UNEP) and world health organization (WHO) argued that it is not sufficient merely to have access to water in adequate quantities; the water also need to be of adequate quality to maintain health and must be free from harmful biological and chemical contamination. The objective of this study is to assess the quality of groundwater from both wells and boreholes in Bama town to determine the factors affecting the quality of the groundwater and to make policy statements to government on groundwater quality. The data needed for the groundwater quality analysis are primary and secondary data. Primary data includes the result of laboratory analysis and field instrumentation that was carried on the water samples to determine water quality parameters. The secondary data was collected from the medical records of Bama general hospital. The procedure for sampling involves three basic steps: physical, chemical and biological properties of water. The physical properties examined are: pH and electrical conductivity, chemical properties conducted were: chloride, nitrate, hardness, total dissolved solid, bicarbonate, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The biological property tested was Escherichia-Coli. The results obtained from the physical, chemical and biological analysis of the groundwater revealed that there is pollution from both chemical and biological sources. The evidence was noticed from high levels of nNitrate, mManganese and Escherichia-Coli in which the values obtained are more than WHO 1996 water standards. Wells and boreholes are more polluted in areas near farms and sanitation units.
