Rectors Message
It is always a joy to spend some little time with children in the primary school. One goes there and is
immediately surrounded by these children who want to be blessed. Their innocence keeps them from realizing
that they themselves are so many blessings! They are cute and enthusiastic and ever ready to learn. Inside the
class room they simmer with questions which often baffle the teacher! And so it happens that their questions often
go unanswered leaving behind them a trail of disappointment and discouragement. The result is that as they grow,
children lose their appetite for knowledge because they have lost the ability to think, to question and to be
inquisitive.
Time and again, philosophers and educationists have reminded us that our education should sharpen
childrens inquisitiveness and their keenness to know more, to know why and to know how. This must be done
through creative methods of stimulating curiosity, hands-on methods of acquiring information, practical exercises
of honing skills. Modern technology fortunately has made it much easier for us to design and adopt new methods
of whetting the knowledge-appetite in children. We need to use such technology and help children discover things
on their own, and find satisfactory answers to the many questions which crop up during their studies.
Education for tomorrow is not going to be just the three Rs- Reading , Writing and Arithmetic, but will include
also creativity and innovation. If we can excite the imagination of our students and help them to convert it into
creative ideas, we will have succeeded in kindling their creative genius. One of the time-tested ways of kindling the
imagination of children is to foster their reading habits. It is in reading that children are confronted with ideas
which in turn evoke their creative response. It is a matter of regret that more and more of our youth are spending
less and less time in reading. Too much time in front of the television and computer makes our children dull in
productive ideas and dreary in fruitless entertainment. It is up to us educators to devise ways and means of
inculcating and fostering the reading habit among todays children who will be tomorrows citizens.
I urge my colleagues and friends in the teaching fraternity of St Aloysius Primary school to join hands and
promote the kind of education that inspires our young boys and girls to be inquisitive, creative, innovative and
constructive persons of tomorrow. Thats how we will find fulfillment in our own teaching profession.

Water Water everywhere

Waste no water anywhere,
Sow a seed and water it,
See a lovely plant grow from it.

As mesmerising as a red rose

Spreading happiness
Wherever she goes
Every word a jewel in a treasure
With a deep love
needs no words
to measure
Morning till evening I behold her
How my heart yearns
for her affection!
All I want to say
A debt of gratitude,never
my soul can repay
Thy love beyond bounds
Like streams of water
Cascading down till eternity.
Water water everywhere,

Take a bath and you can sit,
Looking cheerful, bright and fit.

How to Say Hello in

Different Languages
- Bennet Collin, VI D

Hello is a word used as greeting.

It is an expression used to greet somebody
you meet (or to answer a telephone call). If you want to say
"hello" in a different language then the list below should come
in handy. However, verbally expressing (saying) hello might
not be easy. Trying to pronounce a word in a different language,
that you are not acquainted with, can cause you to mispronounce
the word. If possible, try to listen carefully to how people of
that language greet each other. The pronunciation of word can
also vary from one region to another within a country. It may, as
well, not be the best phrase to say in a given situation. Depending
on a culture, it may be customary to say hello with a hand
shake, hug, bow etc. Since you are learning to say HELLO in
different languages not all countries are listed. This is because
you are not learning to say HELLO in every different country
(where the language would be the same for one already listed).
Here are some of the ways of saying "hello" in different languages
around the world.

Being talkative is a brain full of ideas to take! A

talkative person starts conversation in elevators with
complete strangers on topics that are as fleeting as
bubbles in wine water! People discuss a lot about
time without looking at their expensive watches.
They dont seem to stop conversation in elevators,
in grocery stores, in college hallways. Endless
repetition of conversations make people wonder if
the talkative ever get tired of talking. They keep
boredom and awkward silence to a bare minimum.
Of what they say is interesting that a talkative person
is usually fun and always has a good story or two. It

makes them important as with out them everything would

be quiet. Well, if you are all anything like me then you are
going to hate the person. So go ahead and talk your hearts
out! Talkatives are envied by the shy and hated by the other
talkative people. But a nice quiet person can be pleasant
too. Talkative people note that you are an alert mind and
are socially active.
So never mind annoying a few people!!!

Friendship

An

Ideal
Student

- Dhanwin N suvarna, Ist B1

- K. Manjunath Bhat VC

Friendship is just like a sailing ship.

Its full of joy and happiness.
With some silliness
Friends are the only people,
Whom we share
Whom I, we bare
And even care
And who are very very rare
They are the ones who scold like a dad
care like a mom
Tease like a sister
Irritate like a brother
But ultimately they are the best...
Friendship
Is just like a sailing ship.

themselves ideal. An
ideal student is the
wealth and future of
the nation, hope of a
family and pride of the
school. He endears
himself to all by his temperment, qualities of head, heart
and knowledge. He respects his teachers and staffs helpful
as well as friendly to his class fellows. Such good and bright
students are the gems of an institution, who become ideal
citizens, politicians, statemenent and leaders. I think an
ideal student always takes an active part in academics as
well as in extra curricular activities. He is both attentive
and punctual in his studies. He is always in the good books
of his teacher An ideal student is disciplined and obedient.
He is not a book worm but an all rounder.

There are many different sizes of rocks that can be found

in space. As the Earth revolves around the Sun, it will be
exposed to some of the rocks that come in its path. When
these rocks collide with the Earths atmosphere (at great
velocities), they begin to heat up due to air friction. Because
of the high temperature produced from the air friction, they
start to glow and then burn up. This is what we observe in the sky (at night)
- Ahmed, VD
which appears to us as a glowing star moving across the sky. This trail of light is
short-lived and vanishes in few a seconds. This also happens during daytime but
we cannot see it because they are too dim in the sunlight. This glowing (burning) rock
is called a meteor or what we commonly call a shooting or falling star. A meteoroid is
that debris found outside the atmosphere. A meteoroid can range from the size of a grain
of sand up to a boulder. Meteoroids are composed of stone, iron, or a mixture of stone and
iron. If a meteor goes through the Earths atmosphere without burning up and hit the Earths
surface (ground), it is called a meteorite. In other words, an incoming meteoroid that survives
its passage through the Earth's atmosphere as a meteor and impacts the Earth's surface, it is
then known as a meteorite. Most meteoroids however burn up when entering the Earths
atmosphere. Meteorites are of two types; stony and metallic.
At certain times of year, several meteoroids collide with the Earths atmosphere. This happen when
Earth goes through a region of space that contains a lot of rocks and dust. This debris come from the passage of a
comet that breaks up as it comes near the Sun ejecting a lot of dust and chunks of rock in its path. If the comet's
orbital path intersects with that of Earth, then the swarm of rocks and dust scattered over the comet entire orbit
will then collides with the Earths atmosphere. This event will result in what you called a meteor shower. Large
numbers of meteors observed in a particular part of the sky are named for the constellation in which they appear
to originate. For example, the Aquarids seem to come from the constellation of Aquarius (July 15- August 15 - Delta
Aquarids), Leonids will appear to originate in the constellation of Leo (November 15-20), the Perseids from Perseus
(July 25 - August 18) and the Orionids from Orion (October 16-27). Scientists (astronomers) used the name of the
constellation it appears to come from to name them for easy reference. Meteor showers occur on about the same
dates each year. Therefore, a falling star or a shooting star has nothing whatsoever to do with a star. It is just
another name for a meteoroid (interplanetary debris) that burns up as it enters the Earth's atmosphere. That is, air
friction vaporizes them into the white-hot streaks of light. This visible path (streak of light) of a meteoroid is a
meteor. Thus, shooting stars or the falling stars are meteors.

Choosing the best school in town for your precious child

is a decision which involves treamendous lot of thinking,
probing, running round various schools, asking friends and
other parents with older children and so on. No stone is left
unturned to reach the best. About seven years ago, my
husband and I went through one of the greatest anxieties a
parent suffers-have we selected the best school for our child?
Our anxiety took us around to various schools in Mangalore.
All through out this searching, there was one school that was
in sight as the best but we were looking to see if there was
something better than the best! Obviously, there were none
so we got our son enrolled at St Aloysius College Higher Primary
School.
So, the big question is why is this school the best? The
first answer that comes to my mind is that this is the oldest
schoo in town where almost all my family members both, by
birth and by marriage have studied. So, the Aloysian spirit is in
our blood! Naturally, we are drawn to this school. There are
other bigger reasons. This is a school with a difference. The
environment that the school provides brings the best out of

St Aloysius Higher Primary School

children! Nobody expects students to `only study

and get good marks here. In fact, when the teachers
find students who are withdrawn or arent migling
around, it worries them. Teachers here understand
even the trouble makers and have a humane
attitude towards them! Inspired by such teachers,
students learn to accept their classments as they
are. They celebrate their different rather than
complain or feel out-of-place.
Above all this, the school provides lots of
opportunities for skill development through club
activity. There is at least one club for each kind of
skill one can think of. Sports and Games are also
given a lot of encouragement. While discipline is
enforced strictly it has never been inhuman.
Everybody, from the Headmistress, Mrs Philomena
Lewis to the Librarian, Ms Diana Santhumayor, are
interested, qualified and concerned about their
students.
As a parent I remain ever grateful to this great
institution for the role it has played in shaping the
personality of my son. As he leaves the portals of
the higher primary school, I wish to extend my
heartfelt thanks to the school. May God continue
to bless this school forever. Thank you.

Parents are divine gifts. They

My fathers name is Canute Roshan

my father is a businessman. They take
great care of me. They always observe my studies and other
activities. I am the apple of their eyes. They always think of
my comfort and happiness over theirs. They want me to be
well educated and established in life.
My parents always teach me to be honest, punctual,
gentle, polite, religious and dedicated. Whenever I do anything
wrong, they point out my mistakes and show me the right
path. My parents buy me lot of books which help me in
acquirng immense knowledge about everything , be it road
safety or good habits, art and culture. My parents insist that I
watch educative channels like discovery, History, Animal
Planet, National Geography, etc though I watch them rarely.
I am proud of having such parents. My duty towards them
is to obey their orders and to pray to God for their sound health
and mental peace. I love my parents more than anything in
the world.

Water being one of the most essential densities of life, is

becoming an increasingly scarce resource and needs careful
planning and management. Availability of safe quality drinking
water is being reduced due to pollution from sewage and
industrial waste. So water should be meticulously harnessed and

carefully conserved. It should be economically used and safely
disposed off after usage.
The need of the hour is sustainable water management, especially in the
content of meeting the demands of an increasing population. Simply put, it means
managing our limited water resources for present needs while keeping in mind
the future requirement of the next generation. It also means looking at fresh water
as an exhaustible, natural and essential resource and seeing watershed areas as
sustainable units of water resource development and management. Uttarkand
state, whose glacial peaks and beautiful Valleys hold age-old ecological secrets, is
a major water bank for North India. These natural sources are nourished by rain
water, which is the biggest source of water on this planet.

The Mighty
- Hashim Ali, VD

At the edge of a forest, stood a big tree. Its

branches spread out majestically and so did its roots.
It shielded people from the sun under its shady
leaves, and provided shelter to countless birds and
other small creatures in its branches. It buzzed with
activity all the time.
At the foot of the tree grew a little plant. The
plant was willowy and delicate, and tended to keel
over at the touch of the slightest breeze. One day,
the two neighbours were having a little chat.
"Well, little one," said the tree to the plant, "Why
do you not plant your feet deeply in the ground, and
raise your head boldly in the air as I do?"
"I see no need to do so," whispered the plant
with a smile. "Actually, I think I may be safer this way."
"Safer!" sneered the tree. "Are you suggesting that
you're safer than I am? Do you know how deep my
roots are buried, how thick and strong my trunk is?
Even if two men hold hands they would not be able
to surround my trunk. Who could possibly pluck me
by the roots or bow my head to the ground?" And
the tree turned away from the plant in a great huff.
But the tree was to regret its words very soon.
One evening a great hurricane arose in the region. It

hurled the trees off their roots and

almost completely destroyed
the forest. It uprooted the
neem tree and hurled it
away with great force.
When the storm
had passed, the villagers
living nearby surveyed the damage.
Mighty trees that had once
almost touched the sky, were
now reduced to stumps or
worse. The forest was littered with their carcasses.
But there was one exception. The little plant. The plant
had been tossed and turned under the fury of the hurricane,
and bent completely. But when the hurricane ended, it sighed
and stood upright again.
No trace remained of its mighty neighbour though.

that many scientists think is

according to a report in The

Geoff Marcy of San

Preparing
for Winter
- Shafaqath, VIC

Unknown:
Never be afraid
to try something
new. Remember
amateurs built
the ark, but
professionals
built the Titanic.
Abraham
Lincoln:
The Best way to
predict your
Future is to
create it.

Autumn was
coming to an end. All
the insects and
animals
were
working very hard
to stock their
larders
with
enough food to last them the winter. They all knew that winter
time would be tough - it would be cold and food would be
scarce. As it would get dark really soon, it would be difficult to
go looking for food.
Therefore, everyone was working hard, all except Mr
Grasshopper. He loved autumn. Autumn was a time when the
leaves changed colour. It was all so so pretty. The trees seemed
to be on fire with red, yellow and orange leaves, which then
fell off and covered the ground. There was a pleasant breeze
too.
Mr Grasshopper spent his days playing. He jumped from
leaf to leaf and from one fallen twig to another. What he liked
best was the way the leaves bounced when he jumped off
them, and how the leaf he landed on swayed with his weight.
"Yooo eeeeee. Life is lovely, the world is beautiful, I want to
play forever..." he sang.

Just then little Miss Ant happened to pass by.

She was dragging a heavy grain of rice behind her.
"Oowf. This is so heavy. I wish I could get some
help with this. I should have asked my brother to
come along to help me," she was muttering. "Oh,
do you need help?" asked Mr Grasshopper.
"Yes, sir. Would you give me a hand? My ant
hill is just a few trees away, but this is so heavy,"
replied the ant happily. "Naw. First you come and
play with me for some time, then I shall gladly help
you. What are you toiling for anyway? Autumn is
so beautiful, you too should enjoy the weather
while you can," the grasshopper said.
"No, Mr Grasshopper. You too must start
collecting your food for the winter. Otherwise it
will be tough as there won't be anything to eat,"
said the concerned ant.
"Nothing doing. I will go out and find all the
food I want when I am hungry. Right now it is time
to play and have a party," the silly grasshopper
replied. So Miss Ant just shook her head and went
on - "Huff, puff, huff, puff."
Then winter came. It was so cold that the ants
didn't dare to come out. But their tummies were
full and they were warm and happy. Actually,
everyone was warm and happy, except for Mr
Grasshopper. He was cold and hungry. As he went
hunting for food only when it was less cold than
usual, he got very little to eat and soon became
weak with hunger.
"Oh, why did I spend my days playing? I should
have listened to the ant..." he thought with regret.

Go For It, Bablu!

It happened on the day school started after a heavenly two

months of summer holidays. Shankar refused to wake up at 6
- Ujwal, VID
am. He wanted to dream more about his visit to his grandparents'
home. They lived in the picturesque city of Mysore in the
southern Indian state of Karnataka. He particularly wanted to remember his two trips to the Bandipur National
Park. It was a magical forest in the shade of the Nilgiri mountains which always seemed to have their heads in the
clouds! Shankar had been lucky to see the stately Asian elephant, the Mugger crocodile, the four-horned antelope,
and the leopard. The tiger had been elusive. Next time, Shankar told himself happy at the thought.
He wanted next time to be now! But first, his mother and then his father kept talking in his ear till he was
forced to get up. Have you ever had anyone droning into your ear while you tried to sleep? It can be terrible.
However, once Shankar saw his friends in the school bus, he felt happy to be back from his dream.
When Shankar returned home in the afternoon he saw his mother standing at the door. That was strange. He
wondered, Why hasnt Amma gone to office today? When he saw the worried look on her face he felt a flash of
fear.
Amma gave him a tight hug and two kisses on the forehead. Shankar, I wanted to
tell you myself. Your father had an accident while driving to office. The good news is that
he will be out of hospital in two weeks. He will be absolutely fine. But I think it is time to
get a driver for him. You and I shall select a fine young man to drive Appa carefully to
office.
Ammas words calmed Shankar. He felt happy at the thought of helping out Appa.
In the next few days he sat next to his mother while she interviewed several men for the
post of chauffeur to Appa. They both decided on Raj. He was 30 years old and had a
pleasant way of speaking. Raj will take good care of Appa, Shankar thought.
Finally, Appa returned from hospital. He told a worried Shankar that Raj had driven
very carefully. A lot of exciting things happened on that Sunday. Rajs family came to
stay with them in the small flat in their backyard. Thats how Shankar met Rajs eightyear-old son Bablu.
Bablu had a monkey face, with bright eyes and spiky hair. From the day he met

Shankar, he became his fan. To eight-year-old

Bablu, 11-year-old Shankar seemed to be a
big boy. He would always follow Shankar
around. Whenever Shankar looked up from
the book he was reading, he would find
Bablus face staring at him through the
window. While brushing his teeth he would
often get confused when he saw another face
staring back at him from the mirror! And
when he walked back from the school bus
stop in the afternoon, he would have two
shadows one was his own and the other
shadow was Bablu walking a few paces
behind!
Bablu did not go to school. Of course he
was admitted to a local government school
but he refused to go. He told Shankar shyly
that the teachers only made them copy
words from the blackboard. Since he had not
learnt to read he could not understand
anything that was written on the board.
Shankar felt sorry for him. One Sunday,
Shankar decided to ride his bicycle to his
friends house nearby. As he wheeled out his
bicycle from the garage, he saw a strange
sight. Bablu was sitting under a tree holding
a book in his hands. Shankar tip-toed closer
and discovered that Bablu was holding one
of his books. Whats more, Bablu was holding
the book upside down. Since he could not
read it, did not matter which way he held the
book.
