FROM THE PASTOR

Dear friends,

I want to extend to you a personal
invitation to you to attend the Day
of Discovery on September 20th. It
is only a month away and it is time
to officially put it in your calendar.

Our life is truly a mission, and thus it requires pray-
er and discernment as to how we will fulfill that
mission. The mission is served by the use of the
gifts and charisms that God is giving to us. The
gifts are those things that make us holy, set apart,
and a light to others. The charisms are those things
that make us useful for the betterment of Gods
Kingdom.

Discover these gifts and these charisms at this spe-
cial day of prayer and reflection. These are gifts and
charisms not only for the enrichment of your own
personal life as a Christian but also to serve the
mission of the parish, so that we are responding to
the signs of the times in our local area.

My prayer is that through this day we will truly
embark on the path of being a light in East County
that people look to for guidance in how to be dedi-
cated disciples of Jesus Christ, virtuous citizens, and
loving neighbors.

On another note I wanted to officially announce
that over the summer we have had three employees
move on from our family of Santa Sophia. Truly,
our staff is remarkable, working long hours and
dedicated to their ministry. I am grateful for the
work of Tina Jellison, Georgene Kruzel, and Br.
Kevin McGoff. This has lead to an influx of new
employees that I want you to get to know a little
bit. So for the next four weeks you will see a little
bio about each one.

Bill Smirniotis has been hired as our business man-
ager. Sara Gonzales has been hired as our new re-
ceptionist. Maria Belflower as our new administra-
tive assistant. David Stevens has been hired as our
new Director of Liturgical Music.

Please start saying your prayers for these new
employees as they adjust to the new environment.

Praised be Jesus Christ!

WELCOME NEW PARISHONERS

Jayson and Jennifer Bentcik
and son Gabriel

HERE AT SANTA SOPHIA we have two main
opportunities to meet with other young adults
(ages 18-39) from your parish:

1st Saturday of the month is Coffee and Cate-
chism in the Verhoeven Room from 10:00 to 11:30
am. Here its easy to connect with the young adult
community and learn a little something about the
Catholic faith over a cup of coffee.

2nd Saturday of the month is Supper Saturday.
Right after the 4:30 pm Mass gather in the park-
ing lot to carpool to dinner at a local restaurant.
Check out the East County Young Adult Group on
Facebook or friend Father Jacob Bertrand and he
will add you.
FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Can you lend a helping hand?
We have a parishioner in need of a ride
to and from the 4:30 pm mass on
Saturday or the 11:00 am mass on
Sunday. If you can help out in any way,
please contact the parish office at 619-463-6629 for
further information. Your assistance would be
greatly appreciated.
ARE YOU IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE WHO HUMILIATES YOU, EITHER IN PUBLIC OR PRIVATELY?
This is a Safe Place Community: Santa Sophias team provides faith-based support to parishioners, fami-
ly and friends who suspect or know of violence in their relationships. Call (619)663-9785 and leave a mes-
sage. A team member will call and offer resources that can help in situations of child, elder or intimate
partner abuse.

Almighty God and everlasting Father, I implore Your blessing upon all those attending
seminary. Grant the abundant outpouring of Your wisdom to all those placed in the author-
ity of instructors and teachers. May your seminarians grow in grace day by day, as You
enlighten their minds, subdue their will, and purify their hearts.

May all your theological students grow deeper in love, humility, and holiness, as they
experience your divine presence in their work, rest, and play, enable them to grow into the
virtues that characterize a Holy Priesthood.

MEET THE STAFF
As mentioned in this weeks letter from the Pastor,
we have had a change of some personnel. I would
like to use my Ask the Pastor column to start to
introduce the new staff members to the parish. Ask
the Pastor will return. The first staff member I
would like to introduce is:

Bill Smirniotis
Business Manager
Bill has relocated from Naperville,
Illinois, outside of Chicago, where
he was the Director of Operations
for St. Raphael Catholic Church.
During his career he also held man-
agement positions in the financial
services industry. He comes to San-
ta Sophia with a strong financial and management
background. He and his wife Kathleen recently relo-
cated to the area to be near their three children and
grandson. Bill is also a Fourth Degree member of the
Knights of Columbus.

You will find him in the office handling many of the
daily business matters of the parish along with ser-

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU
Our Common Ground Collaborative outreach minis-
try is looking for willing parishioners to perform two
important roles:
#1 - A computer gifted individual who can help or-
ganize our communication, both among our members
and outbound. Four hours a month would likely be
all that's needed.
#2 - Coordinator for our school music program-
bringing 'live' music performances to students at our
Common Ground served school. You don't have to
carry a tune, just be able to juggle dates with both
school administrators and music providers. This per-
son is picking up with the second year of an existing
program..
If you can help with either one of these needs or
would just like to learn more about them, please
contact Dennis Regan at: (619) 670-8487 or
dennis@mainstreetus.com.

CATECHETICAL MINISTRY

PRAISE, WORSHIP AND MORNING PRAYER
The Brothers and Sisters of Charity, BSCD,
meet regularly on Friday nights at Santa
Sophia at 7:00 pm in CMO, Room 2. For
three Sundays in August we will also be
gathering between masses from 9:15 am to 10:45 am
in Daniels Room. If you are feeling a call to commu-
nity or just want to praise God and join in the Litur-
gy of the Hours with us, please come join us!
Mission and Purpose: The Brothers and Sisters of
Charity is a Christian community founded by Catho-
lic musician and author, John Michael Talbot. The
rule of the Brothers and Sisters is the cross of our
Lord Jesus Christ. We should be troubled about
nothing except this all encompassing rule. All that
matters is that one be created anew.

Making the sign of the cross is a sacred action in which we bless ourselves or others. It is
a reminder of the price Christ paid for us, our sins and our redemption, and it is an outward
confirmation of our faith and belief in the Holy Trinity (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
This outward sign of tracing the cross of Jesus as we verbally profess our belief in the Holy Trinity
physically reinforces our interior faith in the love God pours out to us through Jesus in the Holy Spirit.
With this faith, we make the sign of the cross to ask for and receive Gods favor, Gods protection,
Gods blessing.

The sign of the cross is made at the beginning and end of every Mass. We trace the sign of the
cross on our foreheads, lips and hearts just before the Gospel reading. Priests bless us with the sign of
the cross when we are gathered together on various occasions and for special purposes during the cele-
bration of the seven Sacraments.
We also make the sign of the cross as individuals before and after personal prayer, or as a prayer all
by itself.

A priest often blesses a group by tracing the sign of the cross with his right hand. We make the
sign of the cross by reverently touching the forehead, then the chest, then the shoulders (left shoulder
first) with our right forefingers, and then by putting both hands together as in prayer. While we are
making the sign of the cross, we recite the following words either out loud or internally: In the name
of the Father as the forehead is being touched, and of the Son as the chest is being touched, and of
the Holy Spirit as each shoulder is touched, and then Amen as our hands are clasped together.
This gesture is meant to be a real and unhurried sign.

For God so loved the world that He gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but
might have eternal life
John 3:16

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always
I will not leave you orphans
