PROCEDURE
1. ConstructthepowercircuitasshowninFig.1.
2. Construct the control circuit as shown in Fig.2. Use a function generator to generate a
sinewave(referencewaveform)offrequency50Hzhavingpeaktopeakvoltageof1V(
0.5V to +0.5V). Generate a triangular wave (carrier waveform) of frequency 1 KHz and
peak to peak voltage of 1V (0.5V to +0.5V) using a function generator. These to
waveformsarecomparedusingacomparatorandtheoutputofthecomparatorisused
for generating the gate pulses for the IGBTs S1 and S2. The same sine wave is inverted
using an inverting amplifier and then compared with the same triangular waveform for
generatingthegatepulsefortheIGBTsS3andS4.Comparatoroutputwillbehighwhen
the magnitude of the sine wave is greater than that of the triangular waveform,

S2, S3 and S4 as shown in Fig.2. Each IC TLP350 has a 15 V regulated power supply
comprisingofa230/15Vtransformer,diodebridgerectifier,capacitivefilterandaseries
voltageregulatorLM7815.
3. Connectalowpassfiltertunedto50Hzattheinverteroutput.
4. Apply the gate pulses to the IGBTs (S1, S2, S3 and S4). Observe the gate pulses in an
oscilloscope. Note that gate pulses of upper and lower switches in an inverter leg are
complementary. Check for proper dead time between gate pulses of upper and lower
switchesofeachinverterleg.Measurethedeadtime.
5. SetVs=5V.Setthemodulationindex(ratioofthepeakvalueofthesinewavetothepeak
valueofthetriangularwave)M=1.SwitchONtheinputpowersupply(Vs).Observethe

6. Repeatstep5forM=0.8andM=0.4.
7. Changethefrequencyofthereferencesinewaveformto40Hzandrepeatsteps5and6.
8. Increasethemodulationindex(M)toavalueabove1(overmodulation)andobservethe

PRECAUTIONS
Ascertain that the gate pulses of the upper and lower switches in each inverter leg are
always complementary. Ensure that adequate dead time exists between the gate pulses of
theupperandlowerswitchesineachinverterleg.
Ensure that proper isolation exists between power circuit and control circuit. GND1 and
GND2ofthecontrolcircuitshallbeisolated.AllTLP350ICsshallbepoweredseparatelyfrom
