tarting four issues ago our parish

launched a project we believe
necessary. We have delayed it for
many years for the sole reason that it
would directly benefit us priests and we
felt that it may be too self-serving. And
so we finished the church first with
you taking the lead, with you raising the
needed help, and we rededicated our
Parish Church to the glory of God in honor
of the mother we all love, the Candelaria
in 2010.
And then we set our hearts and minds
for the improvement of our cemetery
making it fit to honor the memory of our
loved ones not simply for aesthetics and
order but because we believe in the life
to come, we believe in the resurrection of
our bodies, we believe that our separation

from them is temporary and on the
appointed day we will see each other again.
All these we have done without
neglecting tasks that really matter
educating parishioners in the faith,
dispensing the sacraments, empowering
the poor, helping the marginalized,
providing education to poor but deserving
students, reaching out to people who have
abandoned the faith, building up small
Christian communities, organizing the
elderly, providing early formation to the
very young . . .
Now we are presenting to you the last
and the least the kombento. Regardless
of how we would want you to refer to it as
balay sang parokya, the parochial house,
you would always refer to it as balay sang
pari. Yes, it is balay sang pari for it provides
a roof for priests who are serving you,
priests you dont want to stay too far in
case you need them.
But there is more to this balay sang
pari which would make it balay sang
parokya and we have cited some of the
reasons in our past four issues of Candle
Light. In the coming issues we will
continue to reminisce and re-appreciate
the Kombento by dedicating a column in
this paper to recall and even immortalize
what that building meant for us.
Immortalizing by remembering,
however, is not enough. We are a living
Church. We are not a museum. We need to
rebuild so that the Kombento will continue
its mission and legacy to the Parish of Ntra.

ChurchLawimplies that theParishKombento
is seen both as a symbol and a fact of the
extraordinarypresenceof theparishpriest and
his assistant priests in the parish. And yet we
knowfor a fact also, that this is not just where
thepriestsresideorwheretheir presenceisfelt
and can be readily looked for when we need
them.
Whenwelookedintoour experiencesintheold
convent, wewereinawayaskingwhat it meant
forus, andperhaps, howit hasaffectedourlives
today. Andthis is what we foundout:
More than just a residence for priests our
kombento was the center of our continuing
educationinthefaithandspiritual formationas
parishioners. It was a venue for meetings and
get-togethersof thereligiousorganizationsand
ministriesof theparish. It wasthecenterwhere
ourremembrancesarekept, whererecordsand
files from our most distant ancestors down to
the present day were secured. It was also the
placewhere everyCandle Light was borninall
these22years; whereourschool andbarangay
catechistspreparedandwereprepared; where
parish pastoral workers were assembled and
recharged for their volunteer work in our
barangaysandMKKs; whereindigentsget alittle
hope; wherethesickwhocouldnot affordwere
cared for free; where the burdened sought
counsel; where our parish scholars saw a
brighter future; where married love was
deepened; where the young got their first
experienceof belongingtoagreater family- the
parish; wheremmany vocations to the
priesthoodandthereligiouslifewerebornand
nourished.
We were all part of that kombento!
The place may not have much in terms of
conveniencesandrichfurnishingsbut I amsure
that it has enrichedus deeplyinsomanyways.
Wehavedoneour best torepair what wecould,
tosufferwhat wecould, sothat it couldstill serve
usalittlelonger, andstill alittlelongereachtime.
But as Engineer Nilo Jardeleza told us in one
meeting, Father, I amsorrytotell youthat the
Jaro convent is no longer standing on sturdy
pillarsorhangingontoughbeams. It isstanding
andhangingonfaith aloneandit isamiracle
that it has not yet collapsed.
Sothere it is. Now, it has togo.
And this is where we all come in.

pagpanawagan para sa isa ka nabag-o kag
komun nga pagpaninguha sa bahin sang
tanan nga mga tumuluo. Kinahanglan nga
magtrabaho ang tanan sa pagpatigayon nga
kilalahon ang dignidad sang tagsa-tagsa
kag magtukod sang isa ka sosyedad nga
napasad sa hustisya. Sa sini nga paagi, ang

efore the end of this month, we will
be presenting to you the scheme of
contribution for our Parochial House
Construction Project.
It is good to notice that the pledges of
donation can be done individually or as
a group. What we often do is individual
donation, isnt it? If theres an activity
in our barangay especially during fiesta,
solicitation letters are being sent to certain
personalities. Through this way of donation,
however, some individuals may really seek
acknowledgment and praise.
Thinking outside the box, another way
of donation would be by GROUP which
may include your families, organizations,
ministries, MKK cells, barangays or just
among friends. This is not something novel.
We have tried this during the Cathedral
Renovation Project, popularly known as
Project 2011 (20 million pesos in 11
months).
What we see in this scheme of
contribution is that the community or the
group is given more importance rather
than personalities. The self decreases in

e glad and be at peace, and clap your
hands, you who are reading this,
Catholics and Christians all, because
our Gospel for this Sunday introduces us
to the beginnings of the early Church that
we know today as the Catholic Church.
Let us take a look back to the events that
unfolded, as told in Matthew 16:13-20:
Jesus and His disciples had just entered
the place called Caesarea Philippi, and
He asked them, Who do the people say
that the Son of Man is?, referring to the
promised messiah who was being awaited
by the Jewish people for centuries. The
disciples said people think he is John the
Baptist, others mentioned Elijah, Jeremiah,
or one of the prophets. But none of the
people were correct.
Then Jesus turned to His disciples
and asked them, But who do you say
that I am? Simon Peter answered, You
are the Messiah, the Son of the Living
God. With this statement, Simon Peter
proclaimed Jesuss true identity. But how
was Simon Peter able to correctly know
who Jesus was? What was there in Simon
Peter among the Apostles?
Among the Apostles, Peters words
make him the first to proclaim Jesus as
the fulfillment of the promised Messiah.
This is infused knowledge coming not
from Peters personal opinion of Jesus
but from God the Father in Heaven. Peter
could not have known who Jesus really was
by his own human capacity. Jesus said to
Peter, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona
(which means son of John). For flesh

Simbahan ining tatlo ka mga kinamatarong
sang tawo: ang kinamatarong sa
pagtrabaho, ang kinamatarong sa husto nga
pagpakig-ambit sa bunga sang iya trabaho,
kag ang kinamatarong sa paghugpong
agud pangapinan ang interes sang mga
nagatrabaho.
Pero ini nagakahulogan man nga
ang tawo may obligasyon sa pagtrabaho,
kag ang kinamatarong sa pagbaton sang
nagakaigo nga sweldo nagakahulogan nga
ang tawo dapat magtrabaho sing nagakaigo.
Ang Simbahan luyag nga dalhon ang
mensahe sang kaluwasan sa tanan nga mga
tawo, sa bisan ano man nga kultura ukon
ginhalinan, pero labaw sa tanan, sa mga
tawo nga may labi nga kinahanglan. Paagi
sini, iya ginasunod ang ehemplo ni Kristo
mismo kag ang buhat sang Kristiano nga
paghigugma nga iya man ginapanaksihan
halin pa sang una.
Tungod sini, sa masunson nagatuhaw
ang pamangkutanon kon paano nagasanto
ang hustisya kag ang paghigugma.
Ang matuod amo nga ining duha wala
nagasumpunganay, kundi nga samtang ang
Kristiano nga paghigugma nagakahulogan
sang pagpatigayon sang hustisya, ang
hustisya naman makakita sang iya interyor
nga kapupun-an dira sa paghigugma.
Sa aton pagtuon sang Ika-pito kag Ika-
napulo nga Sugo, indi lamang naton nakita
ang mga sala nga sarang mahimo batuk
sa personal kag pribado nga pagkabutang
sang aton isigkatawo, kundi ginapadaluman
man naton ang matuod nga kahulogan
sang hustisya sosyal. Ang sarang naton
mapamalandungan diri amo nga bilang
Kristiano nga Pilipino, tanan kita may daku
nga responsibilidad sa pagpaninguha agud
matukod ang isa ka sosyedad nga maki-
angay-angayon kag matarong. Ginahangkat
kita sa pagpanaksi sa mga ginatudlo sang
Ebanghelyo nahanungod sa mga bagay
pang-ekonomiko, sosyal kag politikal. and blood has not revealed this to
you, but my Heavenly Father. In Jewish
culture, flesh and blood meant something
that came from purely human capacity
and knowledge. Peters knowledge came
directly from God the Father.
This infusion by God the Father is the
first visible step in God the Fathers Divine
Plan, through Jesus, to establish a special
role for Peter in the Church Jesus His Son is
to establish later before Jesuss Ascension
into Heaven. Jesus would establish His
Church on the faith of Peters declaration,
this declaration coming from the very
personhood of Peter. God the Father would
secure this Churchs leadership in the very
personhood of Peter, in His divine Plan,
after Adam and Eve sinned, ages before
Peter would utter his declaration of Jesus,
and long before God the Father would
change Simons name to Peter.
In the Nicene Creed, we proclaim that
Jesus is consubstantial with the Father.
The Father and Jesus are One. The Fathers
annoinment of Peter is realized in Jesuss
founding of His Church on Peter.
Jesus continued His reply to Peter,
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and
upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall
not prevail against it.
At that very moment when Jesus
made this proclamation, the road for the
establishment of His Church on earth
opened. This early Church, through the
course of history, guided by God the Fathers
divine plan, started in the ascendancy of
Peter, and Linus, and the unbroken line of
their successors through the centuries, and
to John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis,
and we know this Church today, as the
Holy Roman Catholic Church. By God the
Fathers appointment, verbalized by Jesus
His Son, the former Simon Peter became the
first leader of this Church, the former Simon
Peter became the first bishop of Rome.
As Abraham was to his people, Peter also
became ascendant to his Masters people, as
the world of Simon Peters time would soon
see. How is the ordinary Catholic of today to
ascertain that Peter was to be the first head
of His Church?
Jesus concretizes this fact by saying to
Simon Peter in Aramaic, And so I say to
you, you are Peter {Kepha (Aramaic),
or Cephas (English), or Petros (Greek)
meaning, Rock}, and upon this rock I will
build my Church, and the gates of the
netherworld (Hades) shall not prevail
against it.
Here, Jesus has changed Simons name
to Peter. Peter is the English equivalent of the
Koine dialect of the Greek Petros, masculine,
for Peter; there is also the feminine petra,
but in the English language, it is applied
only to feminine names. It would have been
unthinkable for the Gospel writer Matthew,
the evangelist , to call Peter petra instead of
petros. Matthew wrote in Greek. In Koine
Greek, both petros and petra are taken from
the same root which means rock. The
word Cephas is the English form of Kepha.

through the brochure provided for this purpose and submitted to the Parish Office which
is temporarily set up at Pius XII Institute. On Sundays we are setting up a tent in front of
the Adoration Chapel to receive your pledges and donations.

COFRADIAS INVITATION

CBCP Launches Official Website and FB on Pope Francis Visit to PH

s preparations are underway
for Pope Francis coming to the
Philippines, that will take place
on January 15-19, 2015, the Catholic
Bishops Conference of the Philippines
(CBCP) has launched the official website
of the event.
The Papal Visit website (http://
papalvisit.ph/) features a countdown
clock that counts down the days until
Pope Francis arrival. The official logo of
the visit, as well as its theme, Mercy and
Compassion, is also shown alongside a

back in Rome, the Popes personal envoy
shared what he saw and what can be
done to help.
They told me what they felt in their
hearts and I shared those accounts with
Pope Francis. I was able to see what they
saw, fromthe challenges to the suffering.
As the Popes personal envoy to Iraq,
Filoni says the Pope didnt want his visit
to be a diplomatic mission, but rather a
humanitarian and spiritual one.
He heard different accounts of those
who were forced out of their homes from
one day to the next. Christians and other
minorities shared the threats they faced
at the hands of Islamic Militants.
They told us, you can either convert
or die. Those who fled started a long
painful journey, but many were killed.
Amid all the tragedy and pain, there
are also accounts of local churches
opening their doors and people helping
out with logistics in the refugee camps.
In those type of temperatures,
there were no bathrooms or showers,
picture of the Pope.
Scrolling down the page, one can see pictures
of six children from areas affected by Typhoon
Yolanda welcome Pope Francis with handwritten
drawings. During his visit, the Pope is expected
to visit the areas devastated by the strongest
typhoon ever recorded to hit land.
The website also presents the official song
We Are All Gods Children, which includes a
choreographed routine.
The site includes the official prayer, which
will be recited before the Post Communion Prayer
in every Mass celebrated in the country from
August 1, 2014 until January 14, 2015.
St. John Paul IIs historic visit to the
Philippines in 1995 is also featured. Pope
Francis visit will coincide with the 20th
anniversary of the record-breaking 10th
World Youth Day celebrated in Manila
that same year. With 5 million people in
attendance the World Youth Day in1995
was the largest in its history.
A very important feature of the
website is the CBCPs Pastoral Letter
to Prepare the Filipino People for the
Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis.
In the Pastoral Letter, the bishops
emphasized that it is not the logistics,
security and infrastructure that best
prepare us for the papal visit. Instead,
the bishops invited Filipinos to be like
Pope Francis in his humility and his
compassion to make his apostolic
journey of mercy to be ours even before
he arrives.

he newly-elected president of the
Family for Christ Association (FFCA),
Bro. Bob Tabobo, called to a meeting
the new set of officers for 2014. Said
meeting was held at his residence at Brgy.
Cuartero, Jaro, Iloilo City, at 2:00 oclock in
the afternoon.
The main agendum for the meeting was
the restructuring of the existing grouping
of the members. They will be regrouped
into small groups of ten. The groups are
expected to hold their monthly prayer
meetings in a place they have chosen.
On the other hand, the officers as a
group shall hold their service meeting
every second Sunday of the month at
the presidents residence at 2:00 in the
afternoon.

rayers are doing wonders. God in His
great mercy, is opening His heart and
His graces fall down upon us in order to
make us real Christians. Many of us are now
opening the doors of their positive values and
send them to places where they are needed.
Charity is beginning to spread.
Educational institutions are now
removing the germs of negative values and
are now erecting the pillars of community
building. Careful and observant, they are
emphasizing all means to produce students
who can become very beautiful examples in
community building in communications, and
ingood relationship. Speech competitions like
oration, declamation and extemporaneous
speaking are now having themes, that are
based on beautiful values which inspire and
enhance brotherhood, charity, thoughtfulness,
decency and compassion which are becoming
strong pillars of national recovery. School
officials, teachers and students are now tying
a rope of unity and understanding fromhome
to school- to community.
Not to be outdone, the government is
doing its share in making Iloilo beautiful
again. A few days ago, a barangay councilor
and a woman who was holding a syringe,
knocked at our gate. I didnt know them and
so I asked who they were looking for and
what they wanted. They told me that they
were instructed to inject stray dogs and even
those in the home, to prevent the spread of
rabies lives we alighted that would endanger
the people. This is something.
While they were talking, a dump truck
came and there were men who came down
and removed the trash from the road.
Environmental pollution is now beginning to
be taken cared of. This will lessen unsightly
surroundings and reduce the diseases caused
by mosquitoes and flies and other insects.
Most of all, apostolates are taught at
the Jaro Cathedral, from adults to children,
and conferences and reports are made every
Sunday to see howmuch have been done, and
what else must be done.
Last Sunday, during the eight oclock
mass, Msgr. Esperancilla, explained the
beauty of Christian cooperation, patterned
after the work of the apostles and disciples
of Christ an example of obedience to
Gods commandments, and the beauty of
brotherhood and concern.
If all governmental units are responsible
for keepingIloilo peaceful and cleanmaterially
and environmentally, let us also look into the
depths of our own being and see what we can
do fromhome to community.
Let us use our tongue to teach our
children and other people around us in our
home to talk to God first when we wake up
in the morning and pray for His guidance as
we relate with others. Let us be examples of
environmental cleanliness in our community
and in Christian relationship as we go out of
the privacy of our home. Let us bring God to
other people and make our presence a source
of real friendship. Let us be disciples of Christ
in our own simple way and help spread the
gifts of Christianity. Let us not count the good
that we do to others rather, the good that
Gods gifts is giving to us; our tongue to speak
- our feet to go our hands to do our minds
to think our hearts to feel and to give love
and charity, and to emblazon brotherhood.
Jesus, Cephas is Kepha, meaning Rock.
In Aramaic, Kepha is used both for the
name of a person and for rock.
Since Jesus was talking to Peter in
Aramaic, Jesus changed Simons name to
Kepha or Cephas. In the native Aramaic
language of Jesus, Kepha means Rock.
Jesus must have said to Peter, You are
Kepha and upon this kepha I will build
my Church.
By changing Simons name to Peter,
Jesus had concretized Peters role that
he should become the leader of His
Church. In the Old Testament we find
God the Father changing peoples names
whenever he appointed them for special
missions. Abram (exalted father in
Hebrew) was changed to Abraham
(father of the multitudes). Jacob
(supplanter) was changed to Israel
(One who prevails with God).
In Isaiah 51:1-2, we find this parallel
between Abraham and Peter, which says,
you who seek the Lord; look to the
rock from which you were hewn,,,Look
to Abraham your father. Abraham and
Jacob are the forerunners of Peter and his
ascendancy, as the acknowledged bishop
of Rome, the Pope, as we know him to be
today.
After changing Simons name to
Peter, Jesus seals Peters ascendancy
of leadership by saying to Peter, I will
give you the Keys to the Kingdom
of Heaven. Whatever you bind on
earth shall be bound in Heaven; and
whatever you loose on earth shall be
loosed in Heaven.
Here, Jesus was very specific. After
establishing Peter as head of His Church,
He gives him the Keys, and establishes
Peters authority to state what is
allowed and what is forbidden; to decide
who belongs and who do not belong to
the body of believers; and what is, or is
not the faith of the Church. {Christian
Comm. Bible (St. Pauls\Claretian,1999)
NT, p.44).
After Jesuss Resurrection, the
Apostles also received the power to
forgive sins, and we find this in John
20:22-23. This power to forgive is
today handed over to anointed priests
of the Church, and is given to Catholics
through the Sacrament of Confession.
God the Father, in His Omniscience
and Omnipresence, wills that Jesuss
Church would need a visible head to
lead the people, to see them through
succeeding generations; this visible
leader would need successors to keep
the Church in continued evangelization,
and to set the course inspired by the Holy
Spirit.
From Peter and the Apostles in the
early Church, these successors are present
withus todayinthePopeandinthepriests
of the Holy Roman Catholic Church.
