1 st 9-weeks: 1. Make the students show work for everything! We will not accept their papers without work. This will increase their test-taking skills early. It was a great idea to teach translating expressions and equations together. 2. Begin using the formula charts during the second week of school 3. Begin giving Calculator Drills every other day to increase the students calculator skills and to avoid students incorrect key complaints/problems later on in the year (knowing when to use the negative and the minus key, variable key, fraction key, etc). 4. On October 25 th , print the class rosters; this is the Snapshot date (this can be done during a math meeting).
2 nd 9-weeks: 1. Give Slope an entire week to be taught; dont put Interpreting Graphs on the same week 2. Failed to cover Interpreting Graphs like we were suppose to 3. The activities created for the review week were amazing (BlockBuster, Face-Off, Relay Race, Semester Loop Game, Review sheet, Book) 4. Dont teach direct variation first. The students went thought zero too much for everything else. Also, many students thought of direct variation and parent function as the same thing. 5. Generate an End-of-Year Excel spreadsheet carrying the 1 st , 2 nd and 1 st
Semester average; this will allow us to already have this come the 4 th
9-weeks (this will be done during a math meeting).
3 rd 9-weeks: 1. NEVER schedule the start of Credit Recovery/After-School/Saturday School in the same week of STAAR testing or grade-proofing; the development and preparation of it was an overload on everybody 2. When teaching factoring, dont teach the lead coefficient of a = 1 separate from a > 1; show both with GCF combined so that the students can always know to look for the GCF first 3. Teach more applications for multiplying polynomials such as find the volume with dimensions (need to know that vocabulary word) of 2, x + 1, 2x 2 4x + 7 4. Teach more on factoring a 2 + 2ab + b 2 and other perfect square trinomials. They were trying to use X-Box for problems like that when they cant.
4 th 9-weeks: 1. Start doing calculator drills once a week at the beginning of the school year instead of starting the week before the STAAR EOC. This will also give the students a whole month to complain and use the incorrect keys for the calculator. The teachers must begin using them early.
