Chapter 1 General
1.1 Introduction
This Documentation Onboard is to comply with the ABS Rules for Building and
Classing Steel Vessels, Part 1, Appendix 1/B, Hull Surveys of Oil Tankers, which
requires the Owner to supply and maintain onboard documentation that includes a
Survey Reports File and Supporting Documents.

This document is to be kept onboard for the lifetime of the vessel.

This document should be readily available for the Surveyor.

This document is also to be available in the Owners management office (Chevron
Shipping Company LLC, San Francisco, California, USA).
1.2 ABS Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels, Part 1, Appendix 1/B
Appendix 1/B in Part 1 of the ABS Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels,
originally implemented on 1 January 1993, incorporates IACS unified requirement
UR.Z10.1, Hull Surveys of Oil Tankers, to comply with IMO Regulation 13G in
Annex 1 to 1973/78 MARPOL Convention, adopted by the Marine Environmental
Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO on 6 March 1992 and effective on 6 July 1995.
1.3 Nomenclature
For clarity of definition and reporting of inspection data, standard nomenclature for
structural elements as recommended by the Tanker Structure Co-operative Forum is
adopted. Figures 1.1, 1.2 and 2.2 show generally accepted nomenclature.
1.4 Typical Five Year Survey Cycle
Table 1.4.1 shows a typical schedule for annual, intermediate and special hull surveys
and drydocking within the 5-year survey cycle. The due date and allowable window
for completing each survey are also indicated. Depending on the vessels trading
pattern and schedule, typically each survey is commenced and completed within the
allowable window.

The Chevron hull maintenance scheme is to carry out the shipyard overhaul in
conjunction with the out-of-water drydocking and special hull survey at 5-year
intervals, and underwater inspection in lieu of drydocking (UWILD) in conjunction
with the intermediate survey at 2-year intervals.

The Critical Area Inspection Plan (CAIP) is due for inspection yearly on vessels
trading in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Service (TAPS). There is a 2-month window
available before and after the due date.

2
Special Survey is due at the end of the five-year cycle. The Special Hull Survey can be commenced on the 4
th
Annual Survey, up to fifteen months before the
due date.
3
Intermediate Surveys are due at mid-point of five-year special survey/certificate cycle. All Intermediate Surveys can be done either at or between the 2
nd
or 3
rd

Annual Surveys. The Hull Intermediate Survey has a nine-month window before and after the due date.
4
Annual Surveys are due at the anniversary of the related major survey of certificate. There is a three-month window before and after the anniversary date.
5
Drydock survey cycles incorporate ABS Rules effective May 1989 requiring two D/D surveys every five-year period, with no more than three years between
any two drydocking surveys. An approved underwater inspection by diver equivalent to a drydocking survey (UWILD) may be accepted at alternate
Drydocking Surveys. At the Special Survey Hull, the vessel is to be placed in a drydock or upon a slipway.
6
Critical Area Inspection Plan (CAIP) is due for inspection yearly on vessels trading in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Service (TAPS). There is a 2-month window
available before and after the due date.
