Behind the Scenes at the Center
You might have wondered about the comings and goings over the summer near the staired
entranceway of our Center. Weve been very busy renovatng a small unused front room to be
utlized for extra programming. This room has been dormant for years, due to an unsafe foor and
inadequate lightng. Subsequently, it became a storage dumping ground, wastng valuable space.
Thanks to a generous grant, we were able to transform the area to beneft our program. The foor
was completely reinforced and leveled and beautful natural stone tles were laid. Broken
windows were repaired. The walls and ceilings were refurbished and refreshed with a vibrant new
paint color, and the entre room will receive new window treatments, cabinets & fxtures. This
area, now designated as a food-free, storage-free room, upon completon, will be restored to a
wonderful space that Moriah can use for a variety of actvites.

as we discuss Kelly Corrigans evocative memoir, as we discuss Kelly Corrigans evocative memoir, Glitter and Glue Glitter and Glue
From the author of The Middle Place comes a new memoir that
examines the bondsometmes nourishing, sometmes
exasperatng, occasionally divinebetween mothers and daughters.

When Kelly Corrigan was in high school, her mother neatly
summarized the family dynamic as Your fathers the gliter but Im
the glue. This meant nothing to Kelly, who lef childhood sure that
her momwith her inviolable commandments and proud stoicism
would be nothing more than background chater for the rest of Kellys
life, which she was carefully orientng toward adventure. Afer college,
armed with a backpack, her personal mission statement, and a wad of
travelers checks, she took of for Australia to see things and do things
and Become Interestng.

But it didnt turn out the way she pictured it. In a mater of months, her savings shot, she had a
choice: get a job or go home. Thats how Kelly met John Tanner, a newly widowed father of two
looking for a live-in nanny. They chated for an hour, discussed tming and pay, and a week later,
Kelly moved in. And there, in that house in a suburb north of Sydney, 10,000 miles from the
house where she was raised, her mothers voice was suddenly everywhere, nudging and
advising, cautoning and directng, escortng her through a terrain as foreign as any she had
ever trekked. Every day she spent with the Tanner kids was a day spent reconsidering her
relatonship with her mother, turning it over in her hands like a shell, straining to hear whatever
messages might be trapped in its spiral.

This is a book about the diference between travel and life experience, stepping out and
stepping up, fathers and mothers. But mostly its about who you admire and why, and how that
changes over tme.

book on the birds of New York City. She leads nature walks for the Fort Tryon
Park Trust. Leslie and her husband live on Bennett Avenue.
