GLOBAL DIODE LASERS MARKET OVERVIEW

The global laser market can be broadly split into the Non-Diode and Diode Laser Market. Laser
market can also be discussed in terms of commercial lasers and industrial lasers. However,
lasers can also be segmented based on the active medium (solid, liquid, gas, plasma), laser
wavelength (visible light, infrared, ultraviolet etc), pumping method (optical or electric),
number of energy levels and radiation characteristics.

Material processing, telecommunications, compact disc read/write, defense and military,
research equipment in laboratories are the major market segments for the global laser diodes
market. The non-Diode laser market includes all lasers except direct diodes, i.e. CO2, lamp and
diode pumped SSL, fiber laser. Diode laser market on the other hand includes direct Diodes
which are used in telecommunications, consumer electronics and pump lasers etc. With respect
to manufacturing, lasers like CO2, SS, Ion, Dye, Excimer etc are manufactured in an assembly
line, while diode and fiber lasers are manufactured in semiconductor fabrication plants. This
means they have high initial setup costs and relatively low variable cost.
Diode lasers are primarily semiconductor lasers based on laser diodes. Although the terms
diode laser and laser diode are often used interchangeably, the diode laser is a laser device,
consisting mostly of a single laser diode, but may also contain additional items like an external
optical resonator in the case of an external cavity diode laser. A diode laser may also include
additional optics outside the laser resonator, such as a beam collimator or a beam shaper, like
in the case of a fiber-coupled diode lasers. Devices for nonlinear frequency conversion are also
present in some cases. When high power outputs are needed, multiple laser diodes can be used
for beam combining. A diode laser also generally has a housing, which may also contain means
for temperature stabilization of the laser diode and a laser diode driver.
Diode lasers essentially contain photonic materials which convert electric current into laser
light and have a maximum efficiency of around 70%. Wavelength of the light in which diode
lasers operate range from 400nm to 1500nm. All modern lasers use the double-hetero-
structure implementation unlike the general earlier laser diodes which were simple P-N diodes.
The carriers and the photons in diode lasers are as such confined in order to maximize their
chances for recombination and light generation.
Diode lasers can reach high electrical-to-optical efficiencies typically of the order of 50% and
this efficiency is usually limited by factors such as the electrical resistance, carrier leakage,
scattering, absorption (particularly in doped regions), and spontaneous emission. Particularly
high efficiencies are achieved with laser diodes emitting around 940980 nm (for example in
pumping ytterbium-doped high-power fiber devices), whereas 808-nm diodes are somewhat
less efficient.
Diode lasers have lifetimes in the order of tens of thousands of hours when operated under
proper conditions. However, much shorter lifetimes can result due to factors like operation at
very high temperatures, lack of cooling systems, current or voltage spikes etc. Laser diodes
have two operating modes continuous wave operating mode and pulsed operation mode.
Lasing or active medium, excitation mechanism, feedback mechanism and output coupler are
the key elements of lasers.
Globally laser applications are primarily into signal transmission - fiber optics, optical data
storage CD and DVD-R, directed energy materials processing and welding etc, sensing
pollution monitoring, analysis etc. in this report the following types of diode lasers are
considered as part of the research and data analysis.

LASER SYSTEMS SAFETY GUIDELINES
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) divides all lasers into four groups according to
the risk involved in using them. These laser hazard classifications are used to signify the level of
hazard inherent in a laser system, and the extent of safety controls required. These range from
class I lasers (which are inherently safe for direct beam viewing under most conditions) to class
IV lasers (which require the most strict controls). This division is based on the maximum
radiation emitted from the laser which can cause damage. The aperture and distance from laser
are the two main factors considered when the measurement is done. Other important
parameters include Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD) for each laser type and Optical
Density (OD) required for eye protection.
The Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) levels define the maximum amount of radiation to
which people may be exposed safely. The MPE, expressed in [J/cm^2] or [W/cm^2] depends on
the laser parameters which includes wavelength, exposure duration, Pulse Repetition
Frequency (PRF), and nature of the exposure like specular or diffuse reflection.
In addition, for visible radiation , the MPE for eye exposure is based upon the total energy or
power collected by a fully diluted (night-adapted) human eye, which is assumed to have an
entrance aperture 7 mm in diameter (the diameter of a fully open pupil of young person). This
diameter is defined as the limiting aperture (LA). To determine the potential hazard, the
maximum energy or power that can be transmitted through this aperture must be determined.
For Ultra-Violet (UV) or Infra-Red (IR) radiation, this aperture is defined as 1mm. When using
optical systems, this aperture is defined at 50mm.
The International Electrotechnical Solution (IEC) standard and ANSI standard are currently used
in practice across the world:
1.1.1 IEC STANDARD
Class 1:
A Class 1 laser is safe under all conditions of normal use. This means the Maximum permissible
exposure (MPE) cannot be exceeded when viewing a laser with the naked eye or with the help
of typical magnifying optics (e.g. telescope or microscope).
Class 1 M
A laser can be classified as Class 1M if the power that can pass through the pupil of the naked
eye is less than the AEL for Class 1, but the power that can be collected into the eye by typical
magnifying optics (as defined in the standard) is higher than the AEL for Class 1 and lower than
the AEL for Class 3B. A Class 1M laser is safe for all conditions of use except when passed
through magnifying optics such as microscopes and telescopes.
Class 2:
A Class 2 laser is safe because the blink reflex will limit the exposure to not more than 0.25
seconds. It only applies to visible-light lasers (400700 nm). Class-2 lasers are limited to 1 mW
continuous wave, or more if the emission time is less than 0.25 seconds or if the light is not
spatially coherent. Many laser pointers and measuring instruments are class 2.
Class 2M:
A Class 2M laser is safe because of the blink reflex if not viewed through optical instruments.
Class 3R:
A Class 3R laser is considered safe if handled carefully, with restricted beam viewing. With a
class 3R laser, the MPE can be exceeded, but with a low risk of injury. Visible continuous lasers
in Class 3R are limited to 5 mW.
Class 3B:
A Class 3B laser is unsafe if the eye is exposed directly, but diffuse reflections such as those
from paper or other matte surfaces are not harmful. The AEL for continuous lasers in the
wavelength range from 315 nm to far infrared is 0.5 W. For pulsed lasers between 400 and 700
nm, the AEL is 30 mW.
Class 4:
Class 4 is the highest and most dangerous class of laser, including all lasers that exceed the
Class 3B AEL. A class 4 laser can burn the skin, or cause devastating and permanent eye
damage. These lasers may ignite combustible materials which may cause fire risk. These
hazards may are applicable to indirect or non-specular reflections of the beam. Industrial,
scientific, military, and medical lasers are categorized under class 4.
1.1.2 ANSI STANDARD
Class I:
It includes all lasers that comes under normal working conditions. It cannot emit radiation
which can cause damage. Practically, these lasers are called Eye Safe Lasers. Class I lasers are
lasers which inherently cannot emit radiation in excess of the MPE limits.
Class II:
These are all low-power visible lasers (wavelength spectrum 0.4-0.7 mm), which trigger the reflex of eye
protection by the iris. This reflex time is 0.25 seconds, so, class II lasers can emit power exceeding the
appropriate class I AEL, but the total amount of energy entering the eye will be limited by the eye reflex.
The class I AEL for 0.25 seconds exposure duration is 1 mW. Thus, the maximum power of continuous
visible laser in class II is 1 milli-watt. Laser from class II is the preferred laser for the school laboratory
based experiments. Any laser at other wavelength (invisible) which emits radiation more than the
permitted level of class I is automatically classified as class II.
Class III:
This class is further categorized into sub classes namely: Class IIIa - Include all visible lasers
(wavelength spectrum 0.4-0.7 mm), that emit radiation at a level that does not harm a person
which have a normal iris reflex. Class 3a lasers are medium-power lasers with an output
between 1 and 5 times the class I AEL based on the appropriate exposure duration. If optical
instruments (such as binoculars or telescope) are used to view the radiation, damage to the eye
can occur. For Helium-Neon and Diode lasers is visible, the maximum permitted power is 5 mill
watts.
Class IIIb:
It includes all lasers which are not classified as class I or class II, and emit in any wavelength,
which can cause damage to the eye of an observer without any optical accessories. The
maximum power of lasers in class IIIb is 0.5 Watt. Class IIIb lasers are unable to produce more
than 125 mJ in 0.25 seconds.
Class IV:
It includes all other lasers not classified as classes I, II, and III. They are considered as high
power lasers.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
