Rub Elbows With Royalty At The Fair

Where can you rub elbows with royalty, enjoy
a funnel cake, and watch
a tractor pull? At the Fulton County Fair! If youve
ever wondered about Fair
kings, queens, and ambassadors, you might be
surprised to discover that
the Fulton County Fair
includes an abundance
of royaltyand they have
plenty of responsibilities.
The Fair Royalty program is sponsored by
the Jr. Fair Board, but
the majority of the specie
royalty is sponsored by
Ohio State University Extension in Fulton County
through the 4-H Youth
Development program. It
began as a marketing tool
to increase awareness of
select species of animals
as well as an effort to increase awareness of the
local fairs, explains Jill
Stechschulte, Extension
Educator 4-H Youth Development, and County
Director. It has grown
into so much more than
that, as we provide leadership development, per-

sonal growth, and scholarship opportunities for

young people.
2013 Fulton County
Junior Fair Queen, Amber
Smallman has had a busy
year. Ive attended eight
other county fairs this
year, including Fairfield,
Logan, Lucas, Paulding,
Putnam, Williams, and
the Ohio State Fair, explains Smallman. And
Ill attend four more by
September! Each time
Smallman attends a fair
she wears her crown and
sash, and is representing
Fulton County Fair. In
addition to being friendly,
answering questions, and
posing for pictures, I always try to watch, listen,
and learn something I can
take back home. Having
had the honor of handing
out ribbons to Lamb Show
winners at the Ohio State
Fair, Smallman says that
Fair has been the most
memorable.
One thing Ive realized
is how great the Fulton
County Fair is! Smallman says she appreciates

her home fair even more,

as she discovers just how
much it has to offer compared to other fairs. Its
the second biggest fair in
Ohio, and Im grateful to
be a part of it! Ive been
participating in the Fair
most of my life. Ive had
lots of hands-on experience with animals; Ive
learned how to be a good
winner, and how to mentor younger kids.
Another member of
Fulton County Fair royalty
is Amber Gombash, 2013
Dairy Ambassador. She
has the very specific duty
of promoting awareness of
the dairy industry. Gombash grew up on a dairy
farm and has a passion
for dairy. As Dairy Ambassador, she handed out
ribbons to Fulton County
Fair Dairy Show winners,
participated in a butter carving contest, and
judged a milking contest.
Gombash also made herself available at the Fulton
County Fair, talking with
fairgoers, posing for photos, and sharing her pas-

sion. Outside the fair, she

donned her crown and
sash and attended Sauder
Villages Dairy Days, made
milkshakes at 4-H Camp,
attended Dairy Association meetings, and read to
preschoolers.
Gombash says shes
definitely learned from her
experience as Dairy Ambassador for the Fulton
County Fair. Ive learned
about dedication, how to
think things through before you jump into them,
and Ive gained leadership
skills, she explains.

THE ROYAL
COURT

Fulton County Fair

Royalty includes the following positions: Jr. Fair
King and Queen, 4-H
King and Queen, as well
as 4-H kings and queens
for Caprine (Goat), Rabbit, and Horse, there is
also a Poultry Princess,
Lamb and Wool Queen,
and Puppy Princess. In
addition, three local organizations select and support their representatives:
Fulton County Dairy AssociationDairy Ambassador, Beef QueenFulton County Cattlemens
AssociationBeef Queen,
and Pork ProducersFulton CountyPork Industry
Queen.
Jr. Fair is an overall
competition that is open
only to qualified members
in good standing of 4-H,
FFA, Farm Bureau Youth,
Boy Scouts USA and Girl
Scouts USA or FCCLA
all part of Fulton County
youth organizations. Each
year a Jr. Fair King and
Queen are chosen based

a personal interview conducted by non-Fulton

County individuals. Some
specie representatives are
required to participate in
skill-a-thons.
Fair Royalty is an
important tool for raising awareness about the
Fulton County Fair, educating people on various
types of animals, as well
as developing life skills,
leadership and mentoring
youth. Royalty members
are given opportunities to
learn and grow their leadership skills, and to gain
experience
interacting
with a variety of people as
they participate in various
fairs, festivals, and parades and hold leadership
roles in their organizations. They are role models for other young people,
and are required to follow
a dress code and code of
conduct.
As they tour
other fairs they are able to
exchange ideas with their

counterparts and bring

back valuable knowledge
to share and implement
here in Fulton County.
The 2014 Jr. Fair
King and Queen will be
crowned on Saturday, August 30 at 6:30 p.m. on the
South Stage.

Fire Safety: Its Not All Fun & Games

The ABC of Fire Safety can never be taught too

many times, or in too many ways to kids of all ages.
Back by popular demand, The Firefighter Show will
be holding multiple demonstrations each day from
Saturday thru Tuesday of Fair week. While kids do
have fun and some get to be a firefighter during the
demonstration, value lessons, such as Dont hide, go
outside are taught and reinforced during the shows.
The 2014 Fulton County Fair runs from Friday, August
29, through Thursday, September 4.

International Hall Of Fame Inductees To Participate

In Fulton County Fair Both On & Off Stage
In early July 2014, the
IEBA (International Entertainment Buyers Association) announced the
2014 inductees to the
distinguished IEBA Hall
of Fame. The IEBAs Hall
of Fame acknowledges
achievement by leading
industry professionals in
live entertainment. Past
renowned inductees include Dick Clark, Johnny
Cash, Lawrence Welk,
and George Jones.
Three of the four inductees for 2014 are
slated to be at the Fulton County Fair, namely
The Doobie Brothers and
their longtime manager
Bruce Cohn, as well as,
long time Fulton County
Fair friends and iconic
event
producers
Bob
and Peggy Kaltenbach of
Kleins
Entertainment.
Veteran manager and
agent Jim Halsey is the
fourth inductee.
The
Doobie
Brothers are the first rock act
to be inducted into this
prestigious Hall of Fame.
Their musical journey
began in 1970, the same
year IEBA was founded.
Over their forty years,
The
Doobie
Brothers
have won four Grammy
Awards and built one of
the industrys most loyal
fan bases which lead to
having sold more than 48
million albums. This fall,
the group will add another milestone to their
legacy when they collaborate with some of country
musics top stars on their
Sony Music Nashville album. The album, which
is full of their hits, also
reunites them with longtime Doobie Brother Michael McDonald.
Bruce Cohn is honored
to be inducted into the
IEBA Hall of Fame, and
states, I cant tell you
how much more it means
to be inducted simultaneously with the band.
We have accomplished so
much together and will
continue to achieve even
more in the future. We
have a brotherhood that
I am proud of, and--even
after 44 years together--I
think some of the most
exciting times are just
around the corner.

WHAT IS IT? CONTEST

GRANDSTAND CONCERT ... the Doobie Brothers

August 31.
Street crashed in 1929,
Ohio couple Carl and
Margaret Klein set out to
bring a little joy to those
who had lost so much.
From their efforts, Kleins
Attractions was born in
1930.
Their daughter
Peggy and her husband
Bob Kaltenbach, stepped
into the business with
the same passion. Sharing their same desire to
provide quality entertainment for the community,
the Fair Board of Directors hired Kleins Attractions in 1957 and have
enjoyed the partnership
ever since.
We have
been very pleased with
their commitment and
dedication to offering topname entertainment over
the years and the quality
of production they bring
to the Fair, says Dennis Wyse, Fair President.
Having Peggy and Bob
inducted into the Hall of
Fame the same year as
The Doobie Brothers and
their manager, Mr. Cohn,
is very fitting. And the
fact that well be hosting
these on stage and off
stage award winners is
just confirmation of the
Fairs legacy of collaborating with distinguished
leaders in the entertainment industry to provide
quality shows for Fairgoers.
Just as Carl and Margaret passed their love of
the business onto their

daughter Peggy and her

husband Bob Kaltenbach, Peggy and Bob
passed it to their son R.J.
and his wife Patty. After Bobs death in 1993,
R.J. took the reigns as
the companys president
and Peggy, though semiretired, continues to play
an active role in day-today operations.
As Kleins Entertainment gets ready to celebrate our 85th anniversary in 2015, I am

influence my parents have
had on our business. It

Free Concerts At The Fair

Thursday: The Shades of Blue

In 2013 to show their appreciation of the communitys support, the Fair Board added an additional free concert to the week-long lineup. The new
Thursday evening concert featuring The Shades of
Blue was a big hit with Fairgoers. We wanted to
present an alternative to those in our community
who arent necessarily fans of the demolition derby, stated Wyse. We were very pleased with the
interest last year, and received positive feedback,
so were pleased to offer this free concert again this
year. The Shades of Blue are best known for their
hit Oh How Happy. This versatile, high-energy
group is known for their musical talent, choreography, and Las Vegas style comedy. The concert
starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be held on the South
Stage.
