Tutorial Sheet No. 6
Non-Parametric Testing

1. The following data represent the time, in minutes, that a patient has to wait during 12 visits
to a doctors office before being seen by the doctor:
17 15 20 20 32 28 12 26 25 25 35 24
Use the sign test at the 0.05 level of significance to test the doctors claim that the median
waiting time for her patients is not more than 20 minutes.

2. Analyse the data in problem 1 using Signed-rank test.

3. It is claimed that a new diet will reduce a persons weight by 4.5 kilograms, on average, in
a period of 2 weeks. The weights of 10 women were recorded before and after a 2-week
period during which they followed this diet, yielding the following data:
Woman Weight Before Weight After
1 58.5 60.0
2 60.3 54.9
3 61.7 58.1
4 69.0 62.1
5 64.0 58.5
6 62.6 59.9
7 56.7 54.4
8 63.6 60.2
9 68.2 62.3
10 59.4 58.7

Use the sign test at the 0.05 level of significance to test the hypothesis that the diet reduces
the median weight by 4.5 kilograms against the alternative hypothesis that the median weight
loss is less than 4.5 kilograms.

4. Rework problem 3 using Signed-rank test.

5. A cigarette manufacturer claims that the tar content of brand B cigarettes is lower than that
of brand A cigarettes. To test this claim, the following determinations of tar content, in
milligrams, were recorded:
Brand A 1 12 9 13 11 14
Brand B 8 10 7
Use the rank-sum test with = 0.05 to test whether the claim is valid.

6. In an industrial production line, items are inspected periodically for defectives. The
following is a sequence of defective items, D, and non-defective items, N, produced by this
production line:
D D N N N D N N D D N N N N N D D D N N D N N N N D N D
Use the large-sample theory for the runs test, with a significance level of 0.05, to determine
whether the defectives are occurring at random.

7. The following table gives the recorded grades for 10 students on Minor and Major
examination in the statistics course:
Student Minor Marks Major Marks
Rohan 84 73
Tejas 98 63
Ramesh 91 87
Sameeksha 72 66
Shivani 86 78
Rahul 93 78
Hardika 80 91
Prateek 0 0
Kamya 92 88
Rohit 87 77

(a) Calculate the rank correlation coefficient.
(b) Test the null hypothesis that = 0 against the alternative that > 0. Use = 0.025.

8. A random sample of size 10 is obtained: X1 = 0.621,X2 = 0.503,X3 =0.203,X4 = 0.477,X5
= 0.710,X6 = 0.581,X7 = 0.329,X8 = 0.480,X9 =0.554,X10 = 0.382.Test the hypothesis that
the distribution function is the uniform distribution function using KS test.
9. A physician is interested in the effect of an anaesthetic on reaction times. Two groups are
compared, one with (A) and one without (B) taking the anaesthetic. Subjects had to react on a
simple visual stimulus. Reaction times are not normally distributed in this experiment.
Analyse the data using Mann-Whitney U-Test for ordinal scaled measurements. The table
below shows the rank-ordered data:
Mean RT Rank Group
131 1 B
135 2 A
138 3.5 B
