Athanasian Creed

Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith.
Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled; without doubt he shall perish
everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and
Trinity in nity; !either confounding the "ersons; nor dividing the #ssence. $or there is
one "erson of the $ather; another of the %on; and another of the &oly Ghost. 'ut the
Godhead of the $ather, of the %on, and of the &oly Ghost, is all one; the Glory e(ual, the
)a*esty coeternal. %uch as the $ather is; such is the %on; and such is the &oly Ghost. The
$ather uncreated; the %on uncreated; and the &oly Ghost uncreated. The $ather
unli+ited; the %on unli+ited; and the &oly Ghost unli+ited. The $ather eternal; the %on
eternal; and the &oly Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal.
As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one
infinite. %o likewise the $ather is Al+ighty; the %on Al+ighty; and the &oly Ghost
Al+ighty. And yet they are not three Al+ighties; but one Al+ighty. %o the $ather is God;
the %on is God; and the &oly Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one
God. %o likewise the $ather is ,ord; the %on ,ord; and the &oly Ghost ,ord. And yet not
three ,ords; but one ,ord. $or like as we are co+pelled by the -hristian verity; to
acknowledge every "erson by hi+self to be God and ,ord; %o are we forbidden by the
catholic religion; to say, There are three Gods, or three ,ords. The $ather is +ade of
none; neither created, nor begotten. The %on is of the $ather alone; not +ade, nor created;
but begotten. The &oly Ghost is of the $ather and of the %on; neither +ade, nor created,
nor begotten; but proceeding. %o there is one $ather, not three $athers; one %on, not three
%ons; one &oly Ghost, not three &oly Ghosts. And in this Trinity none is before, or after
another; none is greater, or less than another. 'ut the whole three "ersons are coeternal,
and coe(ual. %o that in all things, as aforesaid; the nity in Trinity, and the Trinity in
nity, is to be worshipped. &e therefore that will be saved, let hi+ thus think of the
Trinity.
$urther+ore it is necessary to everlasting salvation; that he also believe faithfully the
.ncarnation of our ,ord /esus -hrist. $or the right $aith is, that we believe and confess;
that our ,ord /esus -hrist, the %on of God, is God and )an; God, of the #ssence of the
$ather; begotten before the worlds; and )an, of the #ssence of his )other, born in the
world. "erfect God; and perfect )an, of a reasonable soul and hu+an flesh subsisting.
#(ual to the $ather, as touching his Godhead; and inferior to the $ather as touching his
)anhood. Who although he is God and )an; yet he is not two, but one -hrist. 0ne; not
by conversion of the Godhead into flesh; but by assu+ption of the )anhood by God. 0ne
altogether; not by confusion of #ssence; but by unity of "erson. $or as the reasonable
soul and flesh is one +an; so God and )an is one -hrist; Who suffered for our salvation;
descended into hell; rose again the third day fro+ the dead. &e ascended into heaven, he
sitteth on the right hand of the God the $ather Al+ighty, fro+ whence he will co+e to
*udge the (uick and the dead. At whose co+ing all +en will rise again with their bodies;
And shall give account for their own works. And they that have done good shall go into
life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the catholic
faith; which except a +an believe truly and fir+ly, he cannot be saved.
