Hello everyone
Last week we recognised and celebrated reading and literature through Book Week. Book Week
provides an opportunity to heighten awareness and promote the importance of reading. Many
activities designed to achieve this were implemented and I would like to especially acknowledge Mr
Simojoki for the role he played in the organisation and facilitation of those activities PP to Year 7.

On Friday children and staff came dressed as their favourite book character. What an amazing array
of characters and costumes. Congratulations to all for the enormous effort to come as a book
character, this was truly the best Book Week parade we have had.
Year 7s move to high-school: I will include in the newsletters short excerpts from the Department
of Education Website to support the move 2015 of Year 7 students to high-school. The first of which
will look at preparing for the year ahead:
Make sure you have your childs school uniform, books stationery and any other items well
before the school year starts.
Have travel arrangements in place; practise the routine by completing a few dummy runs
during the school holidays. If they are being picked up after school make sure they know
where to meet you.
Have a plan for the first day such as meeting up with a friend and knowing where to go when
school starts (this will be a reminder as the high-school will already prepare them before
hand).
Make sure they have the map and timetable easily accessible during each day, additionally
study this during the holidays so they are familiar with it before school commences.
Be organised at home begin now by encouraging your child to start using a diary, organising
a daily routine for homework, schedule homework in with other activities and have a place for
homework to be completed.
Centenary of ANZAC Departure of Convoy from Albany 1914: As I have written in previous
newsletters, the 100
th
Anniversary of the departure of the convoy carrying the troops to the Middle
East in the lead up to Australias involvement in World War 1 will be recognised in the last week of
October. To fully acknowledge the significance of this historical event, the Minister for Education,
Hon Peter Collier MLC, has agreed to close Albany schools on Friday 31 October. Please ensure
you have this date marked on your calendar; however I will continue to give reminders and
information regarding school involvement closer to the date.
Chickenpox and Measles: There have been a few cases of chickenpox and measles in the district
which has resulted in the Department of Health encouraging families to ensure they are vaccinated.
Both are serious diseases, however preventable if children are vaccinated. Vaccination is easy and
free from when your children are 18 months up until they are in Year 8. Check your childs
immunisation record and if they have not been immunised contact your doctor to discuss vaccination
today.
This Thursday the School Choir will provide the entertainment at the assembly.

This term Room 8 and Room 6 are participating in Keep
Australia Beautifuls Clean Schools Programme.
We conducted an audit of the litter around the school, here
are some graphs by Lilly Scorza (Room 6) and Nicholas
Simpson-Standish (Room 8), which show the results of our
audit.

As the graphs show, we need to remember to sit down
while eating at recess to avoid rubbish being left on the
oval, gardens and playgrounds. Lets Keep Our School
Beautiful.

Bullying is when a student or group

deliberate and repeated.

A fight or disagreement between
equal students is not bullying.

ask for help. Both victim and

and supported.
Do not be a by-stander; if you
witness bullying try to stop it or
