BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The coordinator of the Personalized
Learning program in the Germantown
School District explained how the initiative
has evolved over the past year.
"Personalized learning is being encour-
aged to use both traditional and modern
tools for solving problems or accomplishing
a goal," Personalized Learning Coordinator
Scott Oftedahl said in a video that was pre-
sented during the Aug. 25 Germantown
School Board meeting. "Personalized
learning encourages students to teach,
teachers to learn and prepares everyone to
lead when they have something to con-
tribute."
In the video, he added that personal-
ized learning uses both district and out of
district resources. He said he will visit class-
rooms to encourage teachers to develop
more opportunities for student-centered
learning. He said he works with library
media specialists, teachers and learning
specialists to promote online safety, produc-
tivity "and the ethical use of pictures, music
and other intellectual property. They will
work together with staff to identify the best
way to know what students are learning
and growing."
Oftedahl moved into the role after first
coming to the district as a technology inte-
gration specialist. His new role will keep the
technology integration component of his
job while adding responsibilities for the dis-
trict gifted and talented program
At the start of his presentation,
Oftedahl said he was surprised when he
was asked by Superintendent Jeff Holmes
and Director of Teaching and Learning
Brenda O'Brien to expand into areas of gift-
ed and talented instruction until they
explained what the observed in his work
with technology.
Oftedahl noted that he previously
taught music prior to being selected for the
personalized learning post. Oftedahl
explained how music instruction is compa-
rable to the personalized learning process.
"It's a perfect training ground for it,"
Oftedahl said of his music instruction back-
ground. "You typically work with 50 to 70
kids in a classroom, they play all different
instruments, they're playing different music
at the same time. Some students go home
and practice, some don't. Some come in
with previous piano lessons, some don't. All
of those things mean you come into the
huge, diverse classroom in which you have
a common goal. You have a performance,
anywhere between two and four times a
year, and you need to work together and
combine the talents within the room to come
up with something that sounds very con-
nected, very polished."
He also noted that he taught an engi-
neering and design course to fourth and
fifth grade students over the summer.
Oftedahl said he had limited knowledge of
the what the course would contain so he
worked with another technology teacher to
come up with a way of teaching the design
process to the students. That involved col-
laborating with other people and finding
ways to solve problems, including overcom-
ing constraints such as time and money
"You start trying things and keep stu-
dents focused on what their outcome is, but
the idea is to try things, accept that they're
going to fail on occasion and learn from the
mistakes," Oftedahl said.
Oftedahl added that not all aspects of
the school day can fit into the model he
used during the summer class.
"However, I believe the kids need a lot
more of that built into it," he said.
He distinguished the approach
between "stand alone" gifted and talented
programs that often pull students out of
classrooms with their peers. This different
approach, when it can be used, puts a
focus on personalized learning in a class-
room setting.
Holmes explained that the
Personalized Learning effort is a byproduct
of the district's decision to deviate from the
Common Core State Standards and devel-
op it's own model standards instead.
Holmes said the Germantown approach
seeks to evolve the district "into a modern,
systemic and comprehensive organization.
That led to conversations with Mr. Oftedahl
that I though have been fantastic in terms of
bringing about some of the those changes
associated with the directive.
School Board updated on personalized learning efforts
The Eastern Kettle Moraine Moose Lodge in Germantown hosted its annual classic car show Aug. 23. Among the vehicles on display were a 1957 Chevrolet
Convertible owned by Fred Olsen (top left photo), a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette owned by Jeff Baum (top right photo), a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu owned

the ACT test. It is scheduled for 11th grade
students on March 3.
Most North Shore Conference Schools
have a high percentage participation rate
like we do, so as we add 11 percent into the
mix, it will be interesting to see what happens
to scores, Farren said.
When asked, he also noted that that ACT
is one way to evaluate student performance.
The ACT is one of many measures used
at the high school level. Other measures
include, but are not limited to: WKCE, MAP
testing, and common summative assessments.
Eighty-nine percent of students is a large per-
centage of eligible students. The ACT is a
valuable and well respected assessment over
time as it is used for college admissions,
Farren said.

PET OF THE WEEK
Dreamboat has come a long way over the last few months here at WCHS.
She is a star student, gives excellent eye contact during training, and has
learned quite a few tricks! She now knows come, sit, down, easy, off,
give kisses, leave it, and wait. Dreamboat has gained alot of restraint and
patience. Can you believe we can set a treat on her paw, give her the
leave it and wait commands and she won't touch it or move until we say
"ok"! What a good girl!!! Searching for a dreamer to sail away into the sunset with? Look no further
than our sweet Dreamboat! Dreamboat came into WCHS as a stray. She is Miss Confident and settled
in right away. She has been full of happy wiggles and slobbery kisses from day one! Dreamboat is an
active, young girl still full of puppy energy & antics. WCHS is looking for her new home to have children
12 years and up ready and willing to help with training. Fun loving, playful Dreamboat has not quite
mastered the art of keeping all four on the floor yet when greeting people so some basic manners
training will be needed. We all sure do love her spunky spirit, zest for life, and enthusiasm though!
Dreamboat does get rather over stimulated and excitable when around other dogs. She does not know
how to appropriately greet or play with other canines. With slow introductions over a period of time,
she has made a couple of canine friends here at WCHS. Dreamboat does need to be your one and only
four legged companion in the home. Cats are a definite no go. A good kitty chase and pounce is just
far too exciting to resist! Hurry in to meet Dreamboat before this wonderful girl cruises off without you!!

Tip of the Week: When approaching a new dog (especially one who is shy), crouch down low, turn your body sideways, dont stare directly
into their eyes, offer out your hand for sniffing, and speak in a quiet, soothing voice. Stay put and let them come to you. Once the dog licks
your hand or solicits petting, scratch under their chin rather than on top of their head.

Baby Safety Month 2014 Making Baby
Safer, Room By Room!
Creating a safe environment for your
baby is the best thing you can do to ensure
the first years are happy and healthy.
Raising your bundle of joy takes care and
knowledge. Being more aware of the prod-
ucts in and around your home is just anoth-
er step in preparing for babys arrival and
as baby grows.
Baby proofing your home is the most
important thing you can do to ensure
babys safety. Ideally, the best time to baby
proof is early in your pregnancy before you
register so you can include needed safety
items on your registry list.
The best way to baby proof? Get down
on your hands and knees and think like a
baby! This is a great activity for both mom
and dad since males and females tend to
look at and inspect different aspects of the
home and safety measures in general.
Always at the forefront of the juvenile

GERMANTOWN POLICE BLOTTER
Washington County is currently examin-
ing a possible ordinance that would limit
the use of the Richfield Park and Ride lot.
The lot is located at 2464 Richfield
Parkway and was constructed in the fall of
2011. It is primarily used by the Washington
County Commuter Express (WCCE) and
other commuters along Hwy. 41, according
to an Aug. 22 memo from county Highway
Commissioner Tom Wondra to the
Transportation Committee.
"At the time of construction, no ordi-
nance was adopted by the Washington
County Board of Supervisors to adopt
acceptable uses of the Richfield Park & Ride
into the County Code. As such, there are
currently no restrictions on the use of this
parking facility," Wondra stated in the
memo.
Wondra stated that without an ordi-
nance updating the county code, "there is
no 'abandoned vehicle' definition. A vehicle
or detached trailer would be allowed to
park at the Richfield Park & Ride Lot indefi-
nitely."
Wondra stated in the memo that regula-
tions for most state Department of
Transportation park and ride lots limit park-
ing to 48 hours, which could be adjusted
for the county site.
Wondra further stated that the park and
ride lot is not suitable for heavy trucks, and
recommended that parking of vehicles over
8,000 pounds be restricted.
The proposed ordinance will be dis-
cussed at the Sept. 2 Transportation
Committee, which will held at the county
vehicle maintenance storage facility at 8
a.m.

About Baby Safety Month
Baby Safety Month started in 1983
when JPMA initiated Expectant Mothers
Day. In 1986, it was extended to a week-
long celebration, until 1991, when JPMA
sponsored the first Baby Safety Awareness
Month. Since then, every September has
been designated as Baby Safety Month.
