t The Music Den we are

now celebrating our 30th
year of business. Focusing
on education and customer service
are the main contributors to our
success. While the Internet may
seem to make purchasing musical
instruments easy, we take time to
educate our customers on quality
and as well as price, and match
most internet pricing. To hold an
instrument in your hands, try it, to
feel and hear it is invaluable. Our
experienced sales staff will guide
you to the proper size, style, and
price of an instrument so your
musical experience will last and be
a positive one.
The Music Dens School of
Music and Performing Arts offers
private music instruction by
trained and accomplished teachers.
Lessons on theory, arranging, com-
position and improvisation are
available for students of any level
to expand their music education
and experience. Furthermore, they
can bring in their iPod, or purchase
sheet music we have available (in
our extensive music department)
to learn their favorite song and
help motivate their musical
appetite. Our lesson department
in Butler consists of the entire sec-
ond floor where the atmosphere is
conducive to learning, houses indi-
vidual lesson studios and has a
waiting section.
We understand what a valu-
able community resource a music
facility can provide. Our goal is to
support the music education pro-
grams offered in school and work
together to raise the level of aware-
ness for the Arts. In our Band
Instrument Rental Department,
we offer the best quality band
instruments such as Selmer,
Yamaha, Bach and Buffet. Go
online to www.themusicden.com
to see how easy and inexpensive it
is to rent a top quality band instru-
ment and have it delivered direct-

ith our President
playing yet anoth-
er vacation round
of golf while our Mexican bor-
der resembles Swiss cheese;
our State Department contin-
ues debating about what to do
in the Middle East concerning
American interests and jour-
nalist hostages, further para-
lyzed over how to contain
ISIS. On the domestic front
some pundits are predicting
another stock market and
housing crash! In addition,
everyone understands that
interest rates must increase in
the near-term putting pressure
on corporate, municipal and
federal bond valuations and
yield. The government con-
tinues to profess that inflation
is fewer than 2% yet; when I
look at our personal grocery
receipts I calculate its more
like 8%.
Incomes of Americans
have remained stagnant over
the last few years, making the
grocery bill impact even worse
yet. Flip on the TV and the
headlines are either domestic
police brutality with racial
profiling or about ISIS,
Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Gaza
and their joint hatred for
Israel, America, Jews and
Christians alike! Our govern-
ment hasnt learned yet that it
cannot negotiate or bargain
with people who launch 4,000
rockets into civilian popula-
tions or for no discernable rea-
son, behead an innocent man,
claiming retaliation for a sup-
posed event that James Foley,
a photo journalist, had no part
in or anything to do with.
Perhaps world events
were too much for the late
great Robin Williams to deal
with, adding to his depression
and reasons to end his own
life. Isnt it interesting how
the media delved into Mr.
Williams death with non-stop
coverage for over 72 hours. I
believe this to be a distraction
tactic away from the foibles of
our President, who clearly has
demonstrated a unique clear
concise foreign and domestic
policy of golf and vacations
when dealing with these
major areas of concern. The
man is obviously not a student
of history as evidenced by his
rapid withdrawal from Iraq,
resulting in the formation and
proliferation of ISIS (the
Islamic State of Iraq and
Syria) and now our Vietnam-
like reentry into the same
region, a few advisors at a time
with a scaled-back air defense
initiative under the guise of
humanitarian aid for the
innocent people being slaugh-
tered, raped and tortured, a
genocide taking place right
before our very eyes. If you are
going to fight a war to save
innocent lives, you must be
prepared to commit an ample
percentage of your troops and
resources to do so, otherwise
its a losing and more costly
battle for us and the people we
are trying to save.
By the Presidents own
ambitions of appeasing his
constituents, he felt it best to
vacate the area leaving the
region without any definitive
military, government or direc-
tion. Whereas the leader of
Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu,
is and has been informing the
US public that ISIS, Islamic
Jihad, Hamas and the Muslim
brotherhood are coming to a
theater near you. Obamas
actions led to the proliferation
of ISIS, a group more power-
ful, financed and organized
than Al-Qaeda could ever
hope to be. When the US
acts as the worlds police force
and enters a region, it must
plan a properly timed exit or
make the decision to put a
long-term military base there
after the conflict ends to keep
the peace and back the gov-
ernment left after the job is
done.
All of these national and
domestic news stories involv-
ing mass illegal border cross-
ings, violence, looting, riots
and beheadings have been a
tremendous distraction for the
American public to attend to
and focus on their goals of
increasing their lifestyles and
standard of living, to secure
their financial futures, to pro-
vide for their childrens educa-
tion, marriage and first home
purchase, to focus on a better
financial life now and in the
future.
TV and Movie actor
William Devane explains on
national television while
parked on his motorcycle, why
and where he is buying gold as
a hedge against a domestic
financial meltdown. Fresh in
our minds are the meltdowns
of 2008 and the period
between 2000 and 2002. We
may look no further than
1994 and 1990 and just three
years before that in 1987 was
the BIG ONE where the
DJIA dropped 23% in a single
day. Might we be nearing
another year like 2008?
Its not difficult to see
how one can be easily dis-
tracted from their financial
road by either headline news,
political news, celebrity news,
lest we forget our own person-
al and family issues along the
way. We cannot afford to lose
our financial goals and direc-
tions, the basic tenants of why
we are going to, or went to
work every day of our lives.
We must not be distracted
from our goal of becoming
financially independent. In
retirement would you rather
be dependent on your past
employer, the federal govern-
ment or your children, per-
haps winning the lottery? Or
must you be self: Funded,
Motivated, Completing, and
Sufficient? In this authors
opinion, I believe the answer
is more than obvious, cap-
tured by the phrase, If it is to
be, its up to me!

irca 1991. When I
was a kid, I was a huge
baseball fan- and still
am, by the way. Growing up
my favorite player was a guy
named Graig Nettles, third
baseman for the Yankees in
the 70s and early 80s. This guy
provided me with a lot of
thrills growing up and he was
to me, The Man.
In the early 90s I was
working on my first book,
Safe at Home, which afford-
ed me the privilege of being
on the field and in the locker
room of Major League
Baseball teams in order to
interview players. Graig was a
coach for the Yankees at the
time.
As I was standing on the
field talking to some of the
guys, Graig walked by. My
heart jumped, but I couldnt
bring myself to engage in a
conversation. I couldnt even
muster up the courage to say
hello. Im most definitely not
much of a shy guy, and I cer-
tainly was not intimidated by
him. So why the hesitation?
The reason I chose not to
talk to Graig Nettles was
because I did not want my
childhood icon to turn out to
be a sham. Graig Nettles was
so built up in my mind upon
the shallow image of the
Yankees third baseman, but
what if the real Graig Nettles
turned out to be a jerk? Im
sure Mr. Nettles is a great guy,
but I couldnt bring myself to
take the chance.
In retrospect, it was pret-
ty lame of me not to go up and
talk to the guy who was at one
time my hero. Makes me

My hero! Picture this
continued on page 10
I
am a very fortunate den-
tist. Everyday I enhance
peoples smiles, change
peoples smiles, and am
rewarded with smiles by
thankful, satisfied patients. It
makes me feel good! We all
know the effect we feel when
a baby, a loved one, or even a
stranger, greets us this way.
Did you know that there are at
least ten health advantages to
smiling?
1. Smiling makes us attractive.
We are drawn to people and
draw them in with a smile.
2. It changes our mood. Try it
when youre sad.
3. Smiling is contagious. It
affects others and makes them
happier.
4. Smiling relieves stress. It
prevents us from looking tired,
worn down, and over-
whelmed.
5. It boosts our immune sys-
tem. It can prevent colds and
the flu.
6. Smiling lowers your blood
pressure. Scientific tests have
proven this.
7. Smiling releases endor-
phans, natural painkillers, and
serotonin. These are feel-good
and natural healing drugs in
our body.
8. It lifts your face and makes
you look younger. It works
muscles for a natural face lift.
9. Smiling makes you seem
successful and confident.
10. Smiling makes you more
positive. Try this test: Smile.
Now try to think of something
negative without losing your
smile. Its hard!
Stay healthy, get healthy,
enhance, and show that smile!

tudents learn lessons
each day. While many
of these lessons pertain
to their coursework, kids pick
up much more than book
smarts from school, where kids
first learn to cultivate friend-
ships and build lasting rela-
tionships.
In addition to a new cur-
riculum, new teachers and
new schedules, kids also might
make new friends once a
school year begins. While
some familiar faces carry
through from grade to grade,
chances are youngsters will
meet new students who will
soon become good friends.
While many kids find it easy
to make new friends, others
might need some assistance so
they can make the most of
opportunities to socialize and
form friendships that might
last a lifetime.
Offer opportunities for
socialization. Children should
be given the opportunity to
explore friendships outside of
the classroom where peer pres-
sure might not be so prevalent.
Establish a carpool or invite a
classmate over for a play date.
Unstructured time to play or
get to know each other is a
great way to establish friend-
ships. Invite new children
over each time to see which
friendships are the strongest,
but make sure you are not
pushing a friendship on your
child.
Discover common inter-
ests. One of the quickest ways
to build friendships is through
common interests, says Kirk
Martin, a behavioral therapist
and author. Encourage your
child to join a club or sports
group where he or she can
meet other kids with similar
interests. Sometimes finding
reasons to talk other children
is the most difficult step to
making new friends. Sharing a
common interest removes this
barrier.
Teach proper manners.
Children who are polite, well-
mannered and know how to
follow direction are better
equipped to attract friends.
Children who misbehave may
be shunned by other kids and
their parents who do not want
the hassle of an unruly young-
ster coming over to play.
Respectful children who are
honest, trustworthy and capa-
ble of sustaining eye contact
and making small talk may
find it easy to make friends.
Take the friendship lead.
As parents, you can improve
your childs chances of making
friends by getting friendly
with their classmates parents.
You do not have to become
bosom buddies with everyone,
but making connections with
fellow parents can reinforce
the value of friendship to your
children. Socializing as fami-
lies also presents other oppor-
tunities to get together and
solidify relationships.
Boost confidence levels.
As a parent you can talk to
your children about their
strengths and positive attrib-
utes. Emphasizing kids best
traits will increase their self-
esteem, and that sense of self-
worth can make it easier for
them to make friends. A child
who is shy and insecure may
retreat when meeting new
people, but a child who can
proudly stand behind his or
her accomplishments may
attract friends easily.
School is about more
than just hitting the books.
Its also a prime opportunity
for kids to develop their per-
sonal skills and make new
friends.

think, how much do we really
know about the people we
look up to? Most of the time
we fail to recognize that they
are human, just like us, and
that humans sometimes fail.
We put so much stock in oth-
ers that when they do crash
they take us down with them!
Who do you look up to and
why?
Think about it
Some of my favorite
images are of people who love
their dogs so much that they
actually look like them! Its
the same thing for humans.
When we look up to someone,
or idolize them, we try to emu-
late them. There is a great
quote that says, Be yourself,
after all everyone else is
taken. Wise words. Think
about who it is you put up on
a pedestal and then write
down what it is about them
that is so attractive to you.
Does the list reveal anything
to you?

ome people prefer cats,
while others loyalty lies
with dogs. Dogs and
cats have different personali-
ties, which is what draws peo-
ple to them for one reason or
another. Though different,
cats and dogs alike need to
visit the veterinarian for rou-
tine checkups. Still, it seems
dogs head to the vet more fre-
quently than cats.
Organizations like the
American Association of
Feline Practitioners and
others have uncovered
the disparity in care
among dogs and cats.
Cats are less likely to
receive veterinary health-
care than dogs, as
research shows that cats
make up about one-quar-
ter of patients at small
animal veterinary clinics.
Cats have long been sec-
ond to dogs as the most popu-
lar pet. But cats may be edging
out dogs as the preferred pet,
particularly because they seem
to need less attention and
maintenance. But these same
qualities that make them
attractive pets could be put-
ting their health at risk. Cats
that tend to fend for them-
selves act aloof and may not
give their owners any indica-
tion that they are sick. As a
result, pet owners can become
complacent about cat care,
simply because they dont
spend as much time with cats
as they may with a dog.
Dr. Katy Allen, a veteri-
narian and owner of
Canterbury Tails Veterinary
Services, has said dogs are an
in-your-face kind of pet.
People tend to interact more
with their dogs by taking
them for walks and playing
with them. So its more
noticeable when something is
not right with a dog. Cats,
however, are more stoic.
When they dont feel well,
cats will run away and hide.
Changing vaccine sched-
ules for many animals may
also affect how often cats visit
the vet. Immunizations have
changed so that some shots
can be offered every two or
three years instead of annual-
ly. Therefore, pet owners may
not see the need to visit the
vet unless the animal is due
for a shot. This can put a cat
at risk because it is usually
during routine exams when
vets uncover something that
the pet owner may not have
noticed on his or her own.
The American Animal
Hospital Association urges cat
owners to remember that
every year that passes for a cat
is equivalent to several years
for a person, making it imper-
ative for cats to receive well-
ness examinations, including
laboratory testing, once a year.
Healthy senior cats should be
examined once every six
months, as illnesses and
changes in an older cats
health can progress quickly.
What can you expect at a
cats wellness exam? A veteri-
narian will go over a number
of things at an annual well-
ness visit. Here is a list of
some things to expect: discus-
sion of the animals medical
history, testing of the cats
stool, examination of the cats
nose and nasal passages for
signs of infection, examina-
tion of the gums, teeth and
tongue, examination of the
ears to check for mites or any
discharge, examination of the
eyes, examination of the body
for parasites or skin disease,
examination to determine if
there are any abnormal
growths or tenderness, exami-
nation of heart and lung
sounds, and a collection of
blood to test for heartworms,
feline leukemia and feline
immunodeficiency virus.
If any abnormalities are
suspected, more intensive
testing may be prescribed.
Cats are prized for their
ability to be self-sufficient and
not need the same level of
attention as most dogs.
However, these traits should
not preclude them from
receiving routine medical
wellness exams.

orkdays have a way
of flying by, and
many men and
women find themselves won-
dering where the time went at
the end of a typical day. A
workday filled with meetings
and the obligations of a career
is only half the story for work-
ing parents, who upon leaving
the office must manage the
obligations of their families.
With such hectic sched-
ules, its no wonder so many
working parents find them-
selves wishing there was more
time in the day. While there
may be no way to make a day
25 hours long, the following
time-saving measures can
increase the time you have to
unwind and relax at the end of
the night.
Save those leftovers. At
the end of a good meal, leftover
food will either find its way to
the garbage can or be wrapped
up and stored in the refrigera-
tor. Men and women looking
to save time should embrace
the latter approach to leftovers,
turning them into an extra
meal for later in the week.
Saving and reheating leftovers
from just one meal per week
saves the time it takes to pre-
pare and cook a fresh meal
while providing a welcome
weekly respite for the family
cook from the chore of making
dinner.
Make better use of your
lunch break. Men and women
who arent accustomed to
working lunches can use their
daily lunch hour to run errands.
While using a lunch hour to
pick up some dry cleaning or
visit the grocery store to get
something for that nights din-
ner can save time, even those
errands that dont require leav-
ing the office can be tended to
during your lunch hour. Use
your lunch hour to pay some
bills and balance your check-
book or email your childs
teacher about an upcoming
assignment. Tackling such
errands during the daytime can
free up more time to spend with
your family at night.
DVR your favorite televi-
sion programs. Many house-
holds have embraced the DVR,
which, along with streaming,
has revolutionized the way we
watch television. Rather than
sitting down on the couch to
watch your favorite shows
when they initially air, use your
DVR to record them and watch
them when you get the chance.
This can make your nights less
hectic as you wont be hurrying
to complete chores before your
favorite show airs. And record-
ing your favorite shows also
allows you to fast forward
through the commercials, sav-
ing you roughly 15 minutes for
every hour of television you
watch.
Exercise in the morning.
Devotees of the morning work-
out often note how working
out in the morning does won-
ders for their energy levels
throughout the day. But work-
ing out in the morning also
frees up time to tackle house-
hold chores or work projects in
the evening. Of course, that
extra time in the evening also
can be used to unwind and
relax from a long day at the
office.
Many men and women
find themselves pressed for
time as the week progresses.
But there are several ways to
make more efficient use of your
time and enjoy more free time
as a result.

ome improvement
projects can add
value to a home and
do-it-yourselfers know the
sweat-equity that goes into
such projects can give home-
owners a greater sense of pride
in their homes. But no two
home improvement projects
are the same, and homeown-
ers should know that certain
projects are best tackled dur-
ing certain times of the year.
Fall is a great season to
work on your house, as the
weather is often at its most
agreeable once the summer
heat has gone and before win-
ter weather arrives. The fol-
lowing are a handful of fall-
friendly home improvement
projects for homeowners look-
ing to improve their homes.
Roof repair
Whether youre repairing
or replacing the roof, fall is a
great time of year to dust off
the ladder and get some work
done on your roof for a variety
of reasons. First and foremost,
fall is ideal for roof work
because you wont have to be
up on the roof with the sum-
mer heat bearing down on
you. This can make the proj-
ect move along more quickly,
which is especially beneficial
if you are paying laborers to
work on the roof. The fewer
hours workers are fixing your
roof, the less you will be pay-
ing in labor costs.
In addition, fixing up the
roof in the fall ensures those
winter storms, be it rain or
snow, wont find their way
into your home via leaks. A
leaky roof in winter is hard to
fix, as the roof surface could
be treacherous in the winter
and winter winds can make it
dangerous to be up on the roof
at all. Addressing leaks in the
fall can prevent damage to
your homes interior, which
can mount up if a leaky roof is
not addressed until the follow-
ing spring.
Window work
When the weather out-
side gets frightful, poorly insu-
lated windows can allow cold
air into the home. That often
has a trickle-down effect on
finances, forcing you to turn
up the thermostat in an
attempt to offset the cold air
pouring into the home.
Whether you need your win-
dows replaced or simply need
to patch up any leaks, a proac-
tive approach to leaky or older
windows in the fall can save
you from unnecessarily high
heating bills come the winter.
Addressing leaky windows also
makes a home more comfort-
able for its inhabitants.
Fall is the ideal time to
address a homes windows
because the temperature out-
side tends to be pleasant. This
means you likely wont have to
make much of an effort to off-
set the elements, and open
windows in the fall wont
make your homes interior very
hot or cold like they might if
you were to tackle the project
during the summer or winter.
Fixing the floors
Wood flooring is a hot
commodity for many home-
owners. But not all flooring
can be added to a home at any
time of year. Thats because
certain types of flooring
employ adhesives that need
temperatures inside the home
to be within a certain range,
and that range is often within
70o to 80o F, which makes fall
a great time to install such
floors. Colder temperatures
can make it difficult for the
flooring to dry and bond,
which will prove problematic
down the road. Whats more,
many people entertain friends
and family come late fall and
into the holiday season, and it
can be difficult to do so if you
are busy installing new floor-
ing.
Painting projects
Painting is another home
improvement project that
seems tailor-made for fall. A

house can give a home an
entirely new look and feel.
But paint can be pungent and
the aromas may last if its
applied at a time of year when
it cant dry while the windows
are wide open. Paint fumes
inside a home can make the
home uninhabitable, but
painting at a time of year like
the fall, when you can keep
the windows open during and
after the project, can help air
the home out.
But interior painting isnt
the only painting project
homeowners can tackle in the
fall. Many exterior paints are
temperature-sensitive and
need the temperature outside
to be above 40o F. Paint that
freezes wont dry properly, and
homeowners might be left
with a costly and unsightly
mistake on their hands. Fall
temperatures tend to be
amenable to both interior and
exterior painting projects, just
be sure to check the weather
forecast before making your
first brush stroke.

any home improve-
ment projects in-
volve hanging deco-
rative items, such as photo
frames or shelving. Home-
owners frequently wrestle with
nails, screws and hanging
hardware, perhaps creating
more holes in their walls than
is necessary to get items level
and in the right spots. Instead
of playing a guessing game of
figuring out where the hang-
ing holes or hooks are located
on the back of items, use your
office equipment to make life
easier. Make a copy of the
back of the item you're trying
to hang with a printer/scanner
or a copy machine, making
sure to copy the item to full
scale. Print the copy at full size
and use it to drill the hanging
holes. If you don't have access
to a copy machine or scanner,
use a piece of tape to measure
the distance between the
hanging holes on the back of
the frame. Stick the tape to
the wall and then put your
nails or screws at the ends of
the tape.

S
tretching every dollar is
a reality for many fami-
lies. A higher cost-of-
living coupled with financial
uncertainty has inspired many
families to scale back their
spending, a process thats
much easier when families
create a household budget.
Creating a household
budget is often more compli-
cated for families than indi-
viduals. Thats because fami-
lies not only tend to have
more monthly expenses, but
also because families tend to
pay more mind to their finan-
cial futures than men and
women living on their own.
The following are a few tips
for men and women hoping to
create a household budget for
their families.
Get a grip on your
finances. Before setting a fam-
ily budget, heads of the house-
hold should first get a firm
grasp of their finances.
Determine household income,
fixed monthly expenses (i.e.,
mortgage, car payments, etc.),
luxury expenses (i.e., cable
television service, dining out,
etc.), and outstanding con-
sumer debt. Once you get a
clear picture of whats coming
in and whats going out, you
can determine whether or not
you are making sound deci-
sions.
Set a goal. Once finances
have been examined, you can
then set a goal. Goals will
change as your financial situa-
tion changes, but let your
existing financial situation
influence the goal you initial-
ly set. For example, if an
examination of your financial
situation revealed a consider-
able amount of consumer
debt, then a goal of eradicat-
ing that debt is a great place to
start, and part of setting the
goal is developing a course of
action to make it a reality.
When trying to free up money
to pay down consumer debt,
examine the expenses you list-

Protection Agency,
inadequate ventilation in a
home can increase indoor air
pollution levels. Those pollu-
tant levels rise in a poorly venti-
lated home because not enough
outdoor air is making its way
into a home to dilute emissions
from indoor sources of pollution.
In addition, in a poorly ventilat-
ed home, indoor air pollutants
are not being carried out of the
home, leaving the pollutants to
linger and potentially putting
the health of the home's resi-
dents at risk. Though it might
seem counterintuitive to allow
outdoor air into a home during
winter, when such air tends to
be at its coldest, such outdoor air
can protect a home's inhabi-
tants from the immediate effects
of indoor air pollution, which
include irritation of the eyes,
nose and throat, as well as
headaches, dizziness and fatigue.
Long-term effects of prolonged
exposure to indoor air pollution
can include respiratory disease,
heart disease and cancer. But
homeowners who want toin-
crease outdoor air infiltration in
their homes do not have to open
the windows even when tem-
peratures dip. A simple inspec-
tion of mechanical ventilation
systems, such as bathroom and
kitchen fans and air handling
systems that employ fans and
ducts to remove indoor air and
distribute filtered and condi-
tioned outdoor air throughout a
home, may be all that's neces-
sary to ensure indoor air stays
healthy during the winter. If
such systems are in need of
repair, homeowners should
ensure those repairs are made
prior to the arrival of winter.
ed as luxuries and determine
which ones you can cut so
you can pay down your fami-
lys debts. Dining out less and
cutting back on entertain-
ment expenses are great ways
to free up money to pay down
debt. If an examination of
your finances indicates little
or no consumer debt but lots
of money being spent frivo-
lously, allocate funds for daily
expenditures like a morning
cup of coffee or lunch into
your budget and do your best
to avoid exceeding that
amount.
Establish a weekly budg-
et. Many families find it easi-
er to manage their money
and stay within their budgets
if they live on weekly, as
opposed to monthly, budgets.
This can be tricky, as many of
your more significant expens-
es, including mortgage and
car payments, are likely col-
lected on a monthly basis.
But establishing a weekly
budget for your family allows
you to monitor your monthly
expenses more closely, reduc-
ing the likelihood that youll
get to the end of the month
and realize you exceeded
your budget. Include in your
weekly budget expenses that
are not fixed, like grocery
bills and gas. Staying within
budget for such expenses
every week can lead to sub-
stantial savings by the end of
each month, and its far easi-
er to save that money when
youre monitoring those
expenses every seven days
instead of every 30 days.
Consider long-term
goals. Long-term goals
should be considered when
establishing a family budget.
Even if money is tight, you
likely can still find room in
your budget to save for your
future. The goal of establish-
ing a family budget is to
ensure money is being well
spent, and contributing to
your familys financial future
is money well spent. Allocate
funds for retirement account
contributions and future edu-
cational expenses as well.
Even small contributions can
add up to a significant
amount of money over time.
