1. Description
Technical characteristics
The SHS2 switch-disconnectors and isolators are made up
of a stainless steel cylindrical housing, a set of three top
insulators and a set of three bottom insulators made of epoxy
resin, and a front operating mechanism.
The blade contacts for isolation, breaking, closing and
earthing are arranged inside the cylinder in SF6 gas at a
pressure of 125 kPa absolute.
The unit is the sealed for life type complying with the IEC
60694 Standards.
It is therefore free from any problems of gas tightness.
A gas exhaust valve is located in the rear part of the cylinder
for any over-pressure.
The contacts can take up three positions: CLOSED - OPEN -
EARTHED.
The position of the contacts can be verified from the front of
the operating mechanism by means of a reliable indication, in
compliance with IEC 62265-1 and CEI 17-4 and with the IEC
62271-102 and CEI EN 60129 Standards.
The three top insulators act as a support for the fixed
contacts and allow fixing of the main busbars.
The three bottom insulators act as a support for the moving
contacts and allow connection of the cables or of the
busbars.

General
The SHS2 switching and isolating apparatus consist of gas-
insulated switch-disconnectors and isolators, suitable for use
in medium voltage metal-enclosed switchgear.
They are used in secondary distribution substations for
supplying lines, power transformers and ring networks.
3
Closed Open Earthed
Furthermore, the metal segregation provided by the housing
considerably reduces the possibility of a short-circuit between
the phases and between the upper and lower contacts of the
same phase due to leakage currents.
The stainless steel housing provides a metal earthed
segregation between the busbar compartment and the feeder
compartment of the unit the apparatus is installed in.
This characteristic ensures maximum personnel safety
during any intervention in the feeder compartment, such as
replacement of one or more fuses or cable maintenance, even
with the main busbars energised.

General
The switch-disconnectors use T1-T1M and T2-T2M type
operating mechanisms with separate operating seats for the
isolation and earthing operations.
The isolators use T3 and V1 type operating mechanisms
with separate operating seats for the isolation and earthing
operations and T4 with a single operating seat.
With the T1-T2-T3-T4 operating mechanisms, the opening
and closing operations are carried out manually locally by
means of the operating lever provided.
For the T2 operating mechanism it is also possible to carry
out the opening operation remotely by means of a special
shunt
opening release.
With the T1M and T2M motor operators, the closing and
opening operations are carried out remotely. However, in case
of emergency, they can also be carried out manually locally
using the operating lever provided, or electrically by means of
the special pushbuttons.
The normal power supply voltages for the T1M and T2M
motor operators are:
24 (*) - 48 - 110-220 V DC;
48 - 110 - 220 V AC 50 - 60 Hz.
(*) Only T1M
T1-T1M Operating mechanism with independent
operation on exceeding dead centre
This allows rapid manual or motorized closing and opening of
the switch-disconnector with operating speed independent of
the operator, obtained by using a single spring.
Closing or opening takes place by charging the above-
mentioned spring (either manually of by means of a motor)
until the dead centre is exceeded.
It also carries out rapid manual closing of the earthing switch
with operating speed independent of the operator.
It is used in the SHS2/T1, SHS2/T1/N, SHS2/T1M and SHS2/
T1M/N type of switch-disconnectors.
T2-T2M Operating mechanism with independent stored
energy operation
Allows rapid manual closing of the switch-disconnector with
operation independent of the operator, obtained by means of
a charged spring up to exceeding dead centre.

2. Operating mechanism
During the closing operation, a separate spring is charged
automatically which stores the energy for opening.
Switch-disconnector opening can be carried out by means of:
the operating lever
a shunt opening release (applied onto the operating
mechanism itself) on request
the release system, activated by the striker fuse in the case
of even a single fuse blowing (only for SHS2/T2F
- SHS2/T2F/N - SHS2/T2MF - SHS2/T2MF/N).
It also carries out rapid manual closing of the earthing switch
with operating speed independent of the operator.
It is used in the SHS2/T2, SHS2/T2/N, SHS2/T2F, SHS2/
T2F/N type switch-disconnectors and in the corresponding
SHS2/T2M - SHS2 T2M/N SHS2/T2MF - SHS2/T2MF/N
motorized versions.
With the T2M operating mechanism, the closing operation can
be carried out from remote or by means of the operating lever.
T3-V1 Operating mechanisms with dependent operation
These allow manual closing of the isolator and earthing switch
with operation speed dependent on the operator.
Closing and opening are obtained by working on the
operating lever. The lever can only be removed after
completion of the operation.
The T3 type operating mechanism is used in the SHS2/I,
SHS2/I/N, SHS2/IF and SHS2/IB type isolators.
The type V1 operating mechanism is used in the SHS2/A type
isolator.
T4 Operating mechanisms with independent operation
These allow manual closing of the earthing switch with
operating speed independent of the operator.
The opening and closing operations are carried out locally
manually by means of an operating lever provided. The lever
can only be removed after completion of the operation.
The type T4 operating mechanism is used in the SHS2/ES
type earthing switch.

solutions).
This solution is already used in ABB UniMix switchgear and
application of the kit requires a busbar cross-section similar to that
of the UniMix switchgear.
When a fuse blows, special kinematics activate a signalling
contact.
13
The kit includes the lateral supports to be assembled on the
stainless steel structure to allow fixing in panels built for SHS2
switch-disconnectors and isolators of the first series.
With regard to the auxiliary electrical connections, it is
necessary to carry out the panel retrofit according to the
electric circuit diagrams, available on request.
11 Retrofit Kit 13 Two-level pressure switch
The device allows the internal pressure of the SHS2 switch-

F = Striker force.
S = Striker run.
Three fuses for transformer protection can be connected in
series with the SHS2 switch-disconnector, with dimensional
characteristics complying with DIN 43625 Standards.
The fuse striker must have the force and run shown in the
diagram.
Selection of the fuse according to the voltage and power of
the transformer must be made in conformity with the data
indicated in the table.
6. Fuses
Transformer protection and selection of fuses
When the isolators are used to control and protect
transformers, they are fitted with a particular type of current-
limiting fuses which guarantee selectivity with other protection
devices and can take the high transformer connection
currents without deteriorating.
In this case, protection against overcurrents on the medium
voltage side of the transformer is not indispensable since
this task is carried out by the protection provided on the low
voltage side.
The protection on the medium voltage side can be entrusted
just to the fuse, which must be selected taking into account
the no-load connection current, which can take on values
equal to or higher than 10 times the rated current according
to the power of the transformer and to the type of laminations
used (hot laminated or with orientated crystals).
There is the maximum connection current when circuit-
breaker closing takes place corresponding to the voltage
passing through zero.
A further result to be guaranteed is protection against faults in
the low voltage winding and in the stretch of the connection
from this to the circuit-breaker positioned on the secondary,
avoiding the use of fuses with rated current which is too high,
in order to ensure tripping within a short time even under
these fault conditions.

(*) ABB CEF type fuses. Increases in the rated normal current of the fuses must be foreseen in the case of transformer overload or in the case of ambient temperature higher than
40 C.
A rapid check of the short-circuit current at the secondary
terminals of the transformer and on the supply side of the
circuit-breaker on the secondary - if placed at a significant
distance, allows the trip time to be verified on the fuse
blowing curve.
The usage table given below takes both the required
conditions into account, i.e. sufficiently high rated current to
avoid untimely fuse blowing during the no-load connection
stage and, in any case, of a value which guarantees protection
of the machine against faults on the low voltage side.
