The biggest black hole known to man is seventeen billion times the size of our sun. Black holes
defy all known laws of physics known to us, but still are an important asset to us. Without black
holes, life in this universe would not be possible. This is because the rotating nature of black
holes makes the elliptical nature of most galaxies. This is because most spiral galaxies have a
supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy. The black hole in the center of the Milky
Way is called Sagittarius A.
All objects in this universe with a mass have something called the Schwarzschild radius. The
Schwarzschild radius is the radius of an object, that when condensed to, contains a gravitational
pull so great not even light could escape from it. This is a black hole, and therefore all things in
the universe have the potential to be a black hole, even if its impossible to realistically do so.
But how are actual black holes made in space? Quite simply, black holes are created by saying
starts at least approximately twenty times the size of our Sun. During the life of stars there is a
constant tug of war between gravity pulling in and pressure pushing out. For most of a stars life,
gravity and pressure balance each other exactly, and so the star is stable. However, towards the
end of the stars life, it doesnt make enough energy to counter gravity, therefore giving gravity
the upper hand. The bigger the core of the star is, the greater the force of gravity that compresses
the material. These massive stars then explode in a supernova, and if the core remaining after the
explosion is greater than 2.5 times the mass of our sun, the force of gravity completely
compresses the core into a black hole. Mathematically the core is compressed into a zero
volume, where it is said to have an infinite density, called a singularity.
How would it look if you jumped into a black hole? First of all, time would slow down for you
as you slowly approached the black hole. You would remain like this for a couple of hours, and
things would seem fairly comfortable. In fact you could theoretically even see the back of your
head if you looked to the side because of the light that is being sucked up by the black hole.
After you crossed the event horizon, or the point by which no things could escape from anymore,
things would start to hurt. Your body would begin to slowly being ripped apart by the force of
the gravity, a process called spaghettification by scientists. Eventually every particle in your
body would be reduced to nothingness, therefore defying all laws regarding matter. Once you
manage to reach the singularity of the black hole, no one knows what will happen. This is the
great unsolved mystery! One theory is the black hole might create a wormhole to an alternate
universe, dimension or different part in our universe.
