Experiment No. 1
PERCENT ACETIC ACID

I. INTRODUCTION
Titration is the process of reacting of either acid or base solution of unknown concentration with a
known concentration. This follows the neutralization reaction theory in which acids and bases react to
form salt and water. In this experiments, students were tasked to determine the concentration of the
unknown CH
3
COOH (acetic acid) using a 3M NaOH (sodium hydroxide) with the help of an indicator such
as phenolphthalein.

II. METHODOLOGY

a. SETUP b. PROCEDURE

Prepare setup.
Fill burette with NaOH solution
to the 0.00-mL mark.
Pipette 5mL vinegar sample
into an Erlenmeyer flask.
Add 2-3 drops
phenolphthalein.
Add base into the
acid until end point
is reached or color
of phenolphthalein
shows.
Record amount of base used.
Repeat for three trials which
agree within 0.10-mL
difference.
Calculate for the
percent acid by mass.
III. DATA AND CALCULATION

a. DATA

V NaOH = 0.0020 L
V CH
3
COOH = 0.0050 L
M NaOH = 3 mol/L
D CH
3
COOH = 1.01 g/mL
MM CH
3
COOH = 60 g/mol

b. SOLUTION
mol CH
3
COOH = 0.002 L NaOH (3 mol/L) (1 mol CH
3
COOH/1 mol NaOH) = 0.0060 mol
M CH
3
COOH = 0.0060 mol/0.005 L = 1.2 mol/L
% CH
3
COOH = 1.2 mol/L (1 L/1000 mL) (1 mL/1.01 g) (60 g/mol) x 100 = 7.1%

IV. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

1. The average amount of base (2mL) used to reach the endpoint of acid (5mL) is reasonable
because, NaOH is a strong base while CH
3
COOH is a weak acid.

2. The % CH
3
COOH by mass present in vinegar (7.1%) falls into the range of safe acid content (4% -
8%) in retailed vinegar.

V. CONCLUSION
Based on the results from the experiment, the acid content of the acetic acid from the
vinegar sample was 7.1% by mass. Therefore, the sample, which falls from 4%-8%, was regarded
safe.
